UCLA football officially added four transfers Monday: running back Brittain Brown, tight end Evidence Njoku and defensive backs Obi Eboh and Qwuantrezz Knight. Njoku had only one catch during his Miami career. He played in eight games in 2018 as a redshirt freshman, capped off by his 11-yard reception in the regular-season finale against Pittsburgh, but appeared in only one last season before entering the transfer portal in November. With transfers from Jordan Wilson and Matt Lynch, and Devin Asiasi getting drafted in the third round, the Bruins could use Njoku in the tight end rotation this year if he can obtain a waiver. - Los Angeles Times

UCLA football officially added four transfers Monday: running back Brittain Brown, tight end Evidence Njoku and defensive backs Obi Eboh and Qwuantrezz Knight. Eboh, a Stanford transfer, and Knight, who started his collegiate career at Maryland before transferring to Kent State, can add experience to a secondary that lost three-year starter Darnay Holmes. Eboh played in all of the Cardinal's games the last three seasons, starting seven. As a redshirt junior last year, the 6-2, 195-pound cornerback had 23 tackles, one pass breakup and a blocked field goal. - Los Angeles Times

  06/08/20 - Quentin LakerSr/2022, UCLA + More +

After playing the first three games of last season before suffering an injury only to return in UCLA's season finale against Cal, senior Quentin Lake, son of former UCLA All-American Carnell Lake, is a highly anticipated top returner in the secondary. In 2018, as a sophomore and the Bruins' starter at strong safety, Lake finished third on the team with 67 total tackles. - Orange County Register

For the past two seasons, UCLA's leading choice at running back was a walk-on transfer. After putting up back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons, Joshua Kelley was selected in the fourth round by the Chargers in April's NFL draft. While it will be near impossible to replace the positivity and leadership Kelley brought to the program, the Bruins will need a new option on the field. Led by receiver-turned-running back Demetric Felton, UCLA will be looking for versatility. Felton will most likely carry the majority of the load this season.

As UCLA's second option last year behind Kelley, Felton set a program record with 55 receptions as a running back in his first season in the role. He also set a school record with four scoring plays of 75 yards or more while scoring three different ways for the Bruins. Without Kelley's speed, UCLA will be relying on the redshirt senior's versatility to create different scoring schemes. - Orange County Register

When it comes to UCLA quarterbacks, Dorian Thompson-Robinson has run the Bruins' show the past two seasons and will more than likely do it again in 2020. In what could be a make-or-break year for the Bruins' coaching staff, Thompson-Robinson is expected to have a breakout season, but that's only if he makes strides in becoming more consistent. UCLA will also need to rely on growing its depth in the quarterback group following the transfer of their go-to backup during spring practice.

When Thompson-Robinson is good, he's great. Examples from last season include UCLA's historic comeback win over Washington State featuring his school-record 564 total yards of offense, as well as his 431 total yards against USC - second-most ever by a Bruin against the Trojans. The Bruins have won seven games the past two seasons, five of which Thompson-Robinson started. He finished 2019 with 2,899 total yards and 21 touchdown passes. However, with 12 interceptions and only four running touchdowns, the junior is still missing pieces in his decision-making that limit him in becoming the full package. Heading into 2020, UCLA is going to need the junior to hone in on consistency and leadership. - Orange County Register

  05/27/20 - Elijah WadeJr/2022, UCLA + More +

The NCAA and its conferences have left it to each school to decide when it is safe for athletes to return to campus during the COVID-19 pandemic. And that has Elijah Wade worried. Wade, a defensive end out of Las Vegas who signed with UCLA as part of Chip Kelly's first recruiting haul in 2018, left the program this spring. He told The Times he medically retired from football because of an in-season injury that he felt was mishandled by UCLA staff, leading to physical and emotional trauma.

When former teammates told Wade that they had practiced four times and were dressed in full pads on March 12 for a fifth before that practice was canceled, "I began to panic," Wade said. "I'm hearing about this pandemic ravaging different states and becoming an issue around the world and...I feared for their safety." By then, Wade was already doing something about it. His football career had ended midway through his sophomore year, but he now had a bigger mission for his time in Westwood. He decided to run for a seat on the Undergraduate Student Association Council (USAC), gathering more than 100 signatures to get on the ballot, then navigating a virtual election process to be elected as a general representative. - Los Angeles Times

  04/20/20 - Joshua KelleyrSr/2020, UCLA + More +

Joshua Kelley received just one offer to play collegiate football coming out of Eastside High in Lancaster. After two seasons for UC Davis, he transferred as a walk-on to UCLA in 2017. Due to NCAA transfer rules, he sat out that first year in Westwood, but immediately made an impact on the team as part of its scouting corps. His positive influence, on not only the players but the program as a whole, earned him a scholarship before the start of the 2018 season. Kelley had yet to play a game as a Bruin, but his hard work had spoken for itself. It wasn't long into the season before he'd proved his worth. With six 100-yard rushing games, and 1,243 total yards, Kelley ran for the 10th-most yards in a single-season in school history. His 289-yard performance against USC was the most in the rivalry by a running back from either team.

His 113.0 yards per game average ranked him No. 4 in the Pac-12 and No. 8 in the NCAA. And even more telling, his team awarded him MVP honors for his first season in at UCLA. "Most people, when they first meet him, they're like, 'Is this guy for real?' And he is," UCLA coach Chip Kelly said. "He's like that every single day. He's just got a great attitude and you're excited to be around him." Kelley returned to UCLA for a final year in 2019 and continued to set record after record in becoming the Bruins' star running back. Not only did he become the eighth running back in UCLA history to record back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons, but he also received the team's MVP honors for the second consecutive year. He ended his Bruin career ranked 14th on the school's all-time rushing list with 2,303 yards. - Orange County Register

  04/09/20 - Joshua KelleyrSr/2020, UCLA + More +

Joshua Kelley ran for more than 100 yards at the Senior Bowl. Darnay Holmes ran the 40-yard dash in 4.48 seconds at the NFL combine. Devin Asiasi bench-pressed 225 pounds 16 times at the combine. For a slew of less-heralded UCLA players hoping to be selected in the NFL draft this month, their fates will largely be a tale of the tape. Their college tape. The cancellation of the Bruins' annual pro day amid the novel coronavirus outbreak has left NFL scouts with little to go on when assessing potential besides what players had already shown in college. "A lot of the decisions on players that didn't go to the combine will be based solely on the film that they put on and we had scouts from every single team in the NFL at practice at the fall," UCLA coach Chip Kelly said on a teleconference Thursday, "so their write-ups on practice and what-not I think is what the NFL teams will rely on for those guys."

Kelley, Holmes, Asiasi and kicker J.J. Molson all displayed their skills and had their measurements taken at the combine, allowing teams to gauge their potential in person and conduct medical evaluations that can alleviate any concerns about lingering injuries or health issues. But UCLA teammates Boss Tagaloa, Krys Barnes and Josh Woods head into the draft as bigger unknowns in NFL circles because they did not receive combine invitations or participate in a pro day. "I think it hurts those guys a little bit," Kelly said. "It happened to everybody. Unfortunately, this pandemic hit and there's nothing you can do about it." - Los Angeles Times
