UCLA's tight ends have barely made a blip at the college level, combining to make 13 catches. It's apparently enough to convince coach Chip Kelly that he should continue to make the position a focal point of an offense that sometimes features as many as four tight ends on the field at once. "No, we actually really like our tight end group," Kelly said Monday when asked whether his team would change its offensive approach. A wild card could be redshirt junior Evidence Njoku, a transfer from Miami (Fla.) who is waiting to find out if the NCAA will grant his request for an eligibility waiver. The brother of UCLA receiver Charles Njoku and Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku, Evidence made one catch with the Hurricanes while starting his career at receiver and moving to tight end. Njoku sparked laughter from his teammates when someone not on the team challenged him to a race this summer at Drake Stadium on campus. "The guy was like, 'Hey, man, I'm faster than you, I bet I can beat you,' " Dulcich said recently. "And then Evidence raced him on the spot, and he beat him." - Los Angeles Times

Roughly five weeks after wading into the transfer portal, Notre Dame linebacker Jordan Gemnark Heath has found a new home. With an ND degree in hand by December the 6-foot-1, 220-pound native of Sweden will head back to his adopted home of California and enroll at UCLA for the spring semester. Genmark Heath could have two seasons of eligibility remaining following a graduate transfer, because the NCAA has agreed to give all fall athletes an extra season of eligibility with an extra year to complete it due to COVID-19. UCLA didn't offer Genmarrk Heath a scholarship out of San Diego Cathedral Catholic High, when 247Sports rated him as a four-star recruit and the No. 23 safety in the 2017 class. Rivals ranked him as a three-star recruit and the No. 67 athlete, a designation for players with uncertain position projections. He originally committed to Cal, then flipped to Notre Dame shortly before National Signing Day in the 2017 recruiting cycle. Genmark Heath played in all 39 games of his first three seasons at Notre Dame. His role was mostly limited to special teams with one start at linebacker coming against Northwestern in 2018 when starter Drue Tranquill was laboring with an injury. - South Bend Tribune

This might explain why Michigan's running game struggled through much of the 2019 season. The unit, full of inexperience and youth to begin with, was a banged up bunch most of the fall. While it might not come as much of a surprise, Wolverines offensive coordinator Josh Gattis confirmed the news Thursday during a conference call with reports, citing freshmen Zach Charbonnet and Hassan Haskins specifically. "Everyone knows Zach's tough," Gattis said. "He battled through some injuries in high school, (and) he came in a little banged up and needed to get cleaned up. Then he battled through a number of different injuries last year."

Charbonnet, a four-star prospect in Michigan's 2019 recruiting class, and Haskins, who redshirted in 2018 and was moved to running back prior to last season, spent most of last spring sidelined due to injury. That was known. But both players started the season less than 100 percent, evident in their workload early on. Charbonnet, who led Michigan with 726 yards and 11 touchdowns rushing, combined for 41 carries during the first two games of the season - including 33 carries for 100 yards and three touchdowns against Army. Over the next two games, Charbonnet's carries took a drastic decline - two in a blowout loss to Wisconsin and five in a win over Rutgers. "To see a guy that was a true freshman kind of battle through adversity and injuries and still play the full season says a lot," Gattis said. "But he's been able to spend his offseason focusing on his body." - Ann Arbor News

They arrived with hopes of completing one final college football season, worried it might get yanked away, never imagining they might be granted a bonus slate of games. Come for a season, stay for the 2-for-1 special? That's a possibility for UCLA's four graduate transfers, who could go from short-timers to needing to renew their apartment leases. The NCAA has provided an additional year of eligibility for every player amid the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning that graduate transfers could play in whatever form the delayed, abbreviated 2020 season takes and then stick around for a full 2021 season. The extra games may be especially beneficial for such players as offensive lineman Paul Grattan Jr., a graduate transfer from Villanova who coveted higher-level competition with the Bruins before heading to the NFL.

"If I've got it, I'm going to take it," Grattan said. "It can't hurt to take another year to get bigger, stronger, faster, more experienced." Running back Brittain Brown and defensive backs Obi Eboh and Qwuantrezz Knight said they would also assess the situation before deciding whether to return for a 2021 season that's scheduled to include seven home games, including a game against 2019 national champion Louisiana State. "I think there's a scenario, for sure," Eboh said. "I mean, I'd have to weigh my options, but my goal is to ultimately play in the NFL and have a long career there, so I'm going to do what's best for me in that regard." - Los Angeles Times

Linebacker Jordan Genmark Heath has stepped away from the Notre Dame football team, the program announced Monday night. The senior will no longer practice with the team, plans to complete his degree in November and explore other football opportunities, the shared statement said. Genmark Heath could have two seasons of eligibility remaining following a graduate transfer, because the NCAA has agreed to give all fall athletes an extra season of eligibility with an extra year to complete it. That should mean Genmark Heath will have six years to complete five seasons of eligibility. He will have used three seasons of eligibility in four years by sitting out this season. Earlier Monday, junior Shayne Simon and Marist Liufau were named as the co-starters at buck linebacker. Genmark Heath was competing for that opening on the Irish defense. - South Bend Tribune

UCLA football officially added four transfers Monday: running back Brittain Brown, tight end Evidence Njoku and defensive backs Obi Eboh and Qwuantrezz Knight. Brown, Eboh and Knight are immediately eligible as grad transfers, although the fate of the 2020 season is uncertain amid the coronavirus outbreak, while Njoku, the older brother of UCLA sophomore receiver Charles Njoku, is pursuing a waiver for immediate eligibility after transferring from Miami.

Brown ran for 1,126 yards in 25 games at Duke. His redshirt junior year was cut short because of injury after three games. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound running back joins a position that lost starter Joshua Kelley, who was drafted in the fourth round by the Chargers after rushing for 2,303 yards in two seasons with the Bruins. With redshirt senior Demetric Felton and juniors Martell Irby and Kazmeir Allen as the team's leading returners, UCLA did not sign a running back in its 2020 recruiting class after signing four during the previous cycle. - Los Angeles Times
