  09/10/22 - QB Ethan GarbersrSr/2025, UCLA, 6-2, 210 (DS#29 QB) + More +

Backup quarterback Ethan Garbers threw for 164 yards and ran for a pair of touchdowns, and UCLA improved to 2-0 for the second consecutive year with a 45-7 rout of Alabama State on Saturday. Garbers came in for Dorian Thompson-Robinson midway through the Bruins' fourth drive early in the second quarter. The redshirt sophomore directed scoring drives in five of seven possessions (four TDs, one field goal). He completed 14 of 18 passes with both of his rushing scores coming in the second quarter as the Bruins built a 31-7 halftime lead. Thompson-Robinson was on target for his first six passes, including a 25-yard TD to Hudson Habermehl late in the first quarter, and finished 9 of 11 for 101 yards. Keegan Jones, T.J. Harden and Christian Grubb also had touchdowns for the Bruins. UCLA's defense forced three turnovers. Alabama State's (2-1) lone score came with 13:53 remaining in the second quarter when Jeremiah Hixon caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Myles Crawley. - UCLA/AP College Football

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday demanded that UCLA explain how its Pac-12 exit for the Big Ten will benefit all of its student-athletes and honor its relationship with UC Berkeley - the only UC campus that will be left behind and will likely take a big financial hit in a conference weakened by big-name defections. "The first duty of every public university is to the people - especially students," Newsom said in a statement. "UCLA must clearly explain to the public how this deal will improve the experience for all its student-athletes, will honor its century-old partnership with UC Berkeley, and will preserve the histories, rivalries, and traditions that enrich our communities."

Newsom made an unusual appearance Wednesday at the San Francisco meeting of the UC Board of Regents, where he serves as an ex-officio member, to join the board's closed-door discussion on the issue The decision by UCLA - along with USC - to leave the Pac-12 Conference in August 2024 has left Cal and other remaining conference teams reeling over the threat of losing millions in media rights revenue, not to mention the holdovers' viability as a major player in the rapidly shifting college sports landscape. UCLA and UC Berkeley have declined comment on the issue. - Los Angeles Times

It was a splashy move with a quiet beneficiary. Given its perilous athletic department finances, UCLA faced the prospect of cutting sports had the school not agreed to bolt for the Big Ten Conference. The timing isn't certain and the number of teams that would have been affected isn't known, but the Bruins were headed toward an Olympic sports Armageddon without the infusion of cash that will accompany its departure from the Pac-12 Conference in 2024. Now its 25 teams and more than 700 athletes can exhale knowing that their futures have been secured, making those cross-country flights and frigid midwinter temperatures in Big Ten country far more bearable.

"If you love Olympic sports, you should be a fan of this move," UCLA athletic director Martin Jarmond told The Times on Tuesday. "When your program is in significant debt, it's difficult just to maintain, never mind to invest. This not only preserves the programs now - which was not a given - but also will allow us to invest in them. This move allows us to reimagine what UCLA athletics can be with more strategic investment and resources." Over the last three fiscal years, UCLA's athletic department had run up a $102.8-million deficit that figured only to worsen given the school's sagging football attendance and paltry Pac-12 payouts that lagged behind its major conference counterparts. Now it's conceivable that the Bruins could receive $100 million from the Big Ten per year if the expanded conference can snag the projected $1-billion media rights deal that's set to begin in 2024. The financial boon awaiting UCLA with the Big Ten, coupled with its athletes playing on a more visible stage, spurred the decision to leave the Pac-12. - Los Angeles Times

Nothing is set in stone for the UCLA football team, three weeks before the season opener against Hawai'i on Aug. 28. While starting quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson remained "unavailable" for a fourth consecutive practice, Ethan Garbers and Chase Griffin continue to battle for the backup role. Coach Chip Kelly spoke highly about Garbers, when asked about the redshirt freshman before Saturday's practice. "We had the chance to get him in for spring ball," Kelly said. "Getting that underneath him is big. He has capitalized on his reps and done a nice job fitting in."

Garbers joined the Bruins during this offseason and was officially declared eligible during the spring after transferring in after one year at Washington. Not much has changed in terms of who has the lead in the position battle with Griffin, as both quarterbacks are seeing an equal number of reps with the first- and second-team offense. What has changed is Garbers' familiarity with the playbook and his jersey number, switching from the No. 10 he wore throughout the spring and the start of summer camp. He was seen wearing No. 4 this week, which became available after quarterback Blake Kirshner decided to enter the transfer portal. - Orange County Register

  05/19/21 - QB Ethan GarbersrSr/2025, UCLA, 6-2, 210 (DS#29 QB) + More +

UCLA redshirt freshman quarterback Ethan Garbers will benefit from a new Pac-12 intraconference transfer rule and be granted immediate eligibility for the 2021 season. The Corona del Mar High product, who in announcing he was transferring from Washington at the end of 2020, shared the news on Twitter saying: "Thank you! About time! #FreeMan #4sup" A UCLA spokesman told the Southern California News Group that the "paperwork may still be pending but (the program) anticipates that he will now be eligible this fall after developments (on Tuesday)."

The news comes one day after the Pac-12 Conference's CEO Group unanimously decided to eliminate the intraconference transfer rule, which means players transferring to another Pac-12 school no longer have to sit out a season. The school from which the player was transferring had the ability to waive the yearlong requirement, but Washington had refused to do so for Garbers. Quarterback Colson Yankoff, who transferred to UCLA in 2019 and has since moved to wide receiver, had to sit out a season after Washington blocked his transfer waiver. Garbers, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound four-star recruit, was an early enrollee at Washington in April 2020 and transferred to UCLA in January. - Orange County Register

The Pac-12 Conference's CEO Group unanimously decided to eliminate the intraconference transfer rule but it has no impact on UCLA quarterback Ethan Garbers' situation, following his transfer from Washington. The announcement "does not impact Garbers' situation directly," a UCLA spokesperson told the Southern California News Group. "He is still tied to the school he left with respect to his National Letter of Intent." Washington can block Garbers' transfer waiver, forcing him to sit out the upcoming season and serve one academic year in residence at UCLA before being permitted to compete.

"From my understanding with Ethan it has something to do with the national letter of intent and year of residency," Kelly explained earlier this month. "I've heard it's something Washington can waive if they choose too, but we'll find out where we land. "It would be pretty unfair if Ethan is the only kid in the country that has to sit out." Garbers was an early enrollee at Washington in April 2020 and transferred to UCLA in January 2021. - Orange County Register

Next season, the Washington Huskies will see Ethan Garbers on the opposite sideline. Garbers - a 6-foot-3, 215-pound quarterback, who officially entered the transfer portal last week - has committed to UCLA, he announced on social media on Tuesday. UW is scheduled to host UCLA inside Husky Stadium in 2021. The Newport Beach, Calif., product signed with Washington barely a year ago and competed for the Huskies' quarterback job last offseason, but did not participate in any of the team's four games after redshirt freshman Dylan Morris assumed the starting spot. Five-star Kennedy Catholic standout Sam Huard - the No. 1 pro-style passer in the 2021 class, via 247Sports - also signed with UW earlier this month. - Seattle Times

On Christmas Eve, Washington's quarterback exodus continued. After redshirt sophomore Jacob Sirmon transferred to Central Michigan and graduate student Kevin Thomson announced he'll pursue a professional future this month, true freshman Ethan Garbers officially entered the transfer portal on Thursday. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound signal caller confirmed that news to The Times but declined to comment further. Garbers - a Newport Beach, Calif. native - did not play in Washington's four games this fall after signing with the Huskies in Dec. 2019. He was ranked by 247Sports as a four-star recruit, the No. 4 pro-style quarterback and the No. 152 overall prospect in the 2019 class. - Seattle Times
