  09/30/20 - RB Zach CharbonnetSr/2023, UCLA

This might explain why Michigan's running game struggled through much of the 2019 season. The unit, full of inexperience and youth to begin with, was a banged up bunch most of the fall. While it might not come as much of a surprise, Wolverines offensive coordinator Josh Gattis confirmed the news Thursday during a conference call with reports, citing freshmen Zach Charbonnet and Hassan Haskins specifically. "Everyone knows Zach's tough," Gattis said. "He battled through some injuries in high school, (and) he came in a little banged up and needed to get cleaned up. Then he battled through a number of different injuries last year."

Charbonnet, a four-star prospect in Michigan's 2019 recruiting class, and Haskins, who redshirted in 2018 and was moved to running back prior to last season, spent most of last spring sidelined due to injury. That was known. But both players started the season less than 100 percent, evident in their workload early on. Charbonnet, who led Michigan with 726 yards and 11 touchdowns rushing, combined for 41 carries during the first two games of the season - including 33 carries for 100 yards and three touchdowns against Army. Over the next two games, Charbonnet's carries took a drastic decline - two in a blowout loss to Wisconsin and five in a win over Rutgers. "To see a guy that was a true freshman kind of battle through adversity and injuries and still play the full season says a lot," Gattis said. "But he's been able to spend his offseason focusing on his body." - Ann Arbor News
