  11/22/20 - Chubba PurdyrSr/2026, Nevada, 6-2, 213 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Florida State football coach Mike Norvell shared another devastating bit of injury news Wednesday. The head coach revealed that true freshman quarterback Chubba Purdy will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing season-ending surgery on his collarbone Tuesday. This less than a week after he made his first career start last Saturday at NC State. Norvell added that the surgery Purdy underwent was to remove the hardware inserted into his collarbone during his August surgery which was causing irritation and inflammation. "We had a plan and understood the process of removing the hardware was going to take place due to the inflammation and irritation around that hardware, we had to expedite that," Norvell said. "He'll be ready to go (for spring), just, unfortunately, that timeline is just not quick enough to get him back before the season is over with. I have no concerns about anything here moving forward and it'll definitely have him for spring, whenever spring practice begins." - Times Union

  11/21/20 - Carson StrongrJr/2022, Nevada, 6-3, 230 (DS#6 QB) + More +

Since Nov. 1 of last year, Strong has been nothing short of one of the best quarterbacks in the nation. With the sophomore from Vacaville, Calif., playing pretty much every down, Nevada has gone 6-2 in that time, including a 3-0 start to this season. What jumps out is the accuracy, not only in terms of completion percentage - a statistic that can be heavily influenced by short passes - but TD/interception ratio. Strong is both taking care of the ball and coming up with big plays. Strong enters the New Mexico game having not thrown an interception in his last 282 attempts, the best such streak in the country by an even 100 attempts. His last pick came in the Wolf Pack's road win at San Diego State last season. "I haven't really been thinking too much about the streak," Strong said last week. "I'm just trying to read the defense and take what they give me every single play. I just want to hit the open man; I don't care who it is. "Seventy-five percent (completion percentage this season) is good, but we could be even better." - Reno Gazette Journal

  11/14/20 - Romeo DoubsSr/2022, Nevada, 6-2, 204 (DS#20 WR) + More +

Carson Strong threw three touchdown passes to Romeo Doubs, who had his second consecutive game with three receiving touchdowns, and Nevada beat New Mexico 27-20 on Saturday night at Sam Boyd Stadium. Strong was 24-of-38 passing for 336 yards with one interception and Doubs - who scored on catches of 33, 61, and 59 yards - finished with five receptions for 172 yards. Strong had a string of 299 consecutive passes without an interception snapped. It is the second-longest streak of its kind in Mountain West Conference history. Fresno State's David Carr set the record of 306 in 2013. Doubs has eight touchdown catches, including one in each game, this season. The junior came into the year with six career TDs.

Nevada's Brandon Talton made his 14th consecutive field-goal attempt, a 34-yarder, to cap the opening drive of the third quarter and, after the Lobos punted on the ensuing possession, Strong hit Doubs for a 61-yard touchdown to give the Wolf Pack their first lead of the game at 20-13 with 4:36 left in the period. Strong's pass traveled approximately 60 yards in the air. Doubs' final touchdown gave Nevada (4-0, 4-0) a 14-point lead with 6:47 to play. - AP College Football

Along with his character to lead a potent Wolf Pack offense, Strong has showcased a much-improved arm. He's averaging 9.7 yards per attempt, a drastic increase from just 6.2 a year ago. His downfield throws have opened up Nevada's scheme with large chunk plays that puts opposing defenses on its heels. Strong credits his vigorous offseason routine to improve his deep ball accuracy, and it's paid off handsomely to this point. Nevada has three plays of 50-plus yards this season, all of them courtesy of Strong's ability to stretch the field with accurate deep throws. "It's the number one thing I've been working on in quarantine with my dad," he said. "It was something I wanted to improve upon. I love making big plays, and I left a lot of yards on the field out there last year...I'm just going to get better at it, we can start hitting those consistently." - The Nevada Sagebrush

  11/05/20 - Carson StrongrJr/2022, Nevada, 6-3, 230 (DS#6 QB) + More +

Carson Strong and Romeo Doubs connected for three first-half touchdowns and Nevada defeated Utah State 34-9 on Thursday night for the Wolf Pack's third straight win to start their season. Strong was 36-of-52 passing for 411 yards, 9 yards shy of his career high and his fifth straight 300-yard passing game. He has 282 consecutive pass attempts without an interception, the top active streak in the FBS. Doubs made seven catches for 137 yards after a 219-yard receiving day against UNLV last week.

Trailing 9-0, Nevada (3-0, 3-0 Mountain West) rallied behind Strong and Doubs. Strong extended a play before finding Doubs for a 42-yard score, hit Doubs again on a fourth-and-goal for a 3-yard TD and then tossed a 54-yarder to Doubs on a post pattern for a 21-9 halftime lead. Toa Taua ran for a 15-yard TD and his 60-yard run set up Brandon Talton's 36-yard field goal to lead 31-9 after three quarters. Tua finished with 107 yards on 12 carries. The Wolf Pack outgained the Aggies 542-210. Nevada is off to a 3-0 start for the first time since 2010 when they began 6-0. - AP College Football

  11/03/20 - Romeo DoubsSr/2022, Nevada, 6-2, 204 (DS#20 WR) + More +

Wolf Pack receiver Romeo Doubs averaged more than 31 yards per reception against UNLV on Saturday. Two weeks into the Mountain West football season, it's fair to ask, "Who is going to stop Romeo Doubs?" Well, it won't be UNLV. Nevada's junior receiver ran past the Rebels' secondary Saturday night at Allegiant Stadium - often literally - and finished as the game's biggest difference-maker. Officially, he caught seven passes for 219 yards and one touchdown, a 65-yard strike from quarterback Carson Strong in the second quarter that pushed the Wolf Pack's lead to 17-6. Unofficially, he was a distraction all night for the UNLV defense, which had no choice but to keep him under heavy watch.

It wasn't a breakout game for Doubs, who actually scored a touchdown the first time he touched the ball as a college player (a punt return against Portland State in the 2018 opener). In his two-plus seasons at Nevada, he's had monster games against the likes of Colorado State (120 yards, two TDs), New Mexico (11 catches, 167 yards), and this season against Wyoming (12 receptions, 117 yards). But it could be a sign of things to come for the Wolf Pack's Air Raid attack, and that's not great news for the Mountain West secondaries still scheduled to try and contain Doubs. With senior wideout Elijah Cooks out with an unspecified shoulder injury, Strong's most experienced option becomes Doubs, who has appeared in 27 career games and caught 105 passes. Already this season, Strong and Doubs have connected 18 times for 328 yards, an 18.2-yard average. - Reno Gazette Journal

Romeo Doubs had six receptions for a career-high 211 yards and a score and Nevada beat UNLV 37-17 on Saturday night. Caron Strong was 21-of-27 passing for 350 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions and Toa Taua had 12 carries for 86 yards and a TD for Nevada (2-0, 2-0 Mountain West Conference). Doubs had a 52-yard reception to the 1-yard line to set up a scoring run by Devonte Lee that gave the Wolf Pack a 10-3 lead late in the first quarter and Strong connected with Doubs on a 65-yard touchdown early in the second to make it 17-6. Max Gilliam passed for two touchdowns and Charles Williams had 19 carries for 99 yards for UNLV (0-2, 0-2). It was the first college football game played at the 65,000-seat Allegiant Stadium, home of the NFL's Las Vegas Raiders. Due to restrictions and guidelines regarding the coronavirus pandemic, seating was limited to 3% of capacity, which equates to 2,000 patrons. - Nevada/AP College Football

  10/23/20 - Nate CoxrSr/2023, Nevada, 6-9, 225 (DS#58 QB) + More +

It looks like junior college transfer Nate Cox gets the first shot at the No. 2 slot. Cox is listed as Strong's backup on Nevada's depth chart for Saturday's game, ahead of sophomore Jake Barlage. Although Cox will be unfamiliar to Wolf Pack fans, he won't be difficult to spot. At 6-foot-9, he is the tallest player on Nevada's roster. Cox comes to the Pack after one season at Garden City (Kan.) Community College, where he completed 51.8 percent of his passes for 1,891 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also spent two seasons at Louisiana Tech, but did not play. "Nate's an interesting guy...he's 6-9 and three-eighths; he looks more like a basketball player than he does a football player," Nevada offensive coordinator Matt Mumme said Monday. "He throws a really nice ball, and he can really see the field well just because of his height." - Reno Gazette Journal

  10/20/20 - Carson StrongrJr/2022, Nevada, 6-3, 230 (DS#6 QB) + More +

There's no sugar coating it, Carson Strong is the Wolf Pack's QB1 for the 2020 season. And with the type of freshman campaign he put together in 2019, it's hard to argue against it. Strong joined the Wolf Pack out of Vacaville, Calif. and Wood High School as a true freshman in 2018 and made a brief appearance in the tail end of Nevada's 2018 season opener against Portland State. With just that one appearance, Strong redshirted in his true freshman season and picked things up in 2019 as a redshirt freshman ready to lead the Wolf Pack. He won the starting quarterback job in fall camp and helped lead Nevada to a come-from-behind win over Purdue in his first collegiate start. In that game, Strong threw for 295 yards and tossed three touchdowns to no interceptions to aid in the Pack's 34-31 victory over the Power 5 opponent. All-in-all, Strong totaled 2,335 passing yards in his 10 games in 2019, added 11 touchdowns and completed 63.4 percent of his passes. He averaged 233.5 passing yards per game, which ranked fifth in the Mountain West. - Nevada Football

He threw for 2,335 yards and 11 touchdowns on the year, completing 63.4 percent of his passes. Strong averaged 233.5 passing yards per game, good for fifth in the Mountain West. In his first-ever collegiate start, he helped Nevada knock off Purdue to start the season in a come-from-behind effort where he tossed three touchdowns, no interceptions and 295 yards. Strong threw a career-best 402 passing yards in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl against Ohio, where along with his 31 completions, were Nevada bowl game records. - Nevada Football
