  09/24/20 - Otis ReeserSr/2023, Mississippi, 6-3, 214 (DS#12 SS) + More +

Otis Reese, a former Georgia defensive back, is fighting for immediate eligibility at Ole Miss after his January transfer. Reese posted a letter to Twitter on Tuesday night alleging that he was manipulated by head coach Kirby Smart and his staff, adding that Georgia opposed his request to the NCAA for eligibility to play this season. Reese also said in the tweet that his time at Georgia took a "devastating mental toll" on him because of "aggressive" harassment by campus police. He also recounted racist behavior by students on campus and said there was a lack of response by the UGA coaching staff.

"From my first moments I stepped on campus," Reese wrote. "It was not what I expected. The racist events that I kept experiencing weighed on me heavily and seemed never ending." Tom Mars, a lawyer who has become involved in many of the eligibility cases around college football players, responded to Reese's letter. Mars runs Mars Law Firm, based out of Atlanta and Rogers, Arkansas. "Kirby Smart's unequivocal support would have caused the NCAA to rubber stamp Otis' waiver request," Mars wrote. "But whether it's Cade Mays, Ohio State's star QB, or Otis Reese, Coach Smart always seems to focus on pleasing the angry, retaliatory UGA fans." - Macon Telegraph

  09/24/20 - Jahcour PearsonrSr/2022, Mississippi, 5-07, 178 (DS#122 WR) + More +

Western Kentucky's coaches were confident in the team's depth at receiver entering fall camp, saying they thought it was a group deeper than on last year's 9-4, bowl-game-winning team. The Hilltoppers - who graduated Lucky Jackson and Quin Jernighan - are now down their top four reception leaders from 2019 after the departure of Jacquez Sloan late in camp and Jahcour Pearson on Monday, two games into the season. Now, less experienced players will have an opportunity to step up moving forward. "We'll certainly miss J.P.," WKU offensive coordinator Bryan Ellis said Tuesday in a Zoom with reporters. "J.P. made a lot of plays around here the last two years, so we'll miss him. We wish him nothing but the best, but I think we've got capable bodies."

Pearson, who announced his intentions to transfer in a tweet Monday, entered the season as WKU's leading returning receiver after posting 804 yards and seven touchdowns on 76 receptions in last fall's All-Conference USA Second Team campaign. Pearson and Sloan combined for 110 receptions, with Jackson and Jernighan adding another 126. In total, that's 75% of the team's 313 receptions from last year. Pearson had nine receptions - tied for most on the team - and 96 yards - the second-most on the team - through the first two games of the season, which included losses to Louisville and Liberty. "JP was a good person - my dog, for real, for real - but hey, the team's just got to keep moving forward. Still be in contact with him, keep him close, but us as a whole, we've just got to keep moving forward," WKU quarterback Tyrrell Pigrome said. "Next guy up, he's just got to do his job, play, and me too. Just got to keep playing, trying to perform, lead us to a victory. Do the best we can." - BG Daily News

  09/23/20 - Spencer SandersrSr/2024, Mississippi, 6-1, 209 (DS#32 QB) + More +

Oklahoma State starting quarterback Spencer Sanders is in a walking boot and his status for Saturday remains unknown, coach Mike Gundy said on Monday. "We booted him up," Gundy said. "We'll take it off on Tuesday, then put him out there on Wednesday and go from there." Gundy later characterized the injury as "mild." Sanders injured his ankle on the opening series of the 16-7 win over Tulsa on Saturday. He tried to play on the injury, but left after a fumble on the Cowboys' second possession. During the game on Saturday, the injury was described by the Cowboy radio broadcast crew as a "high ankle injury." The most common such injury is a high ankle sprain, but what, exactly, is a high ankle sprain? And what makes it different from a typical sprained ankle?

In general, it comes down to which ligaments were injured. "The high ankle sprain, when you hear that term thrown around, that's usually involving a ligamentous complex called the syndesmosis, and the syndesmosis is a pretty complex group of ligaments that runs up and down the entire length of the lower leg between the tibia and the fibula," said Dr. Brian Clowers, who did not treat Sanders, but is an orthopedic surgeon with a specialty in foot and ankle surgery at Ortho Central in Norman. "When those ligaments get injured, it's generally something that takes a little bit more energy than your garden-variety ankle sprain, a lateral ankle sprain. "As a result, the high ankle sprain tends to respond a little bit slower to rehab." - Daily Oklahoman

  09/23/20 - Jahcour PearsonrSr/2022, Mississippi, 5-07, 178 (DS#122 WR) + More +

Jahcour Pearson is no longer part of Western Kentucky's football program, head coach Tyson Helton announced Monday in his weekly Zoom conference. "Jahcour Pearson will no longer be with us," Helton said. "He will not be on the team. We love him and wish him the best of luck in the future." Helton did not provide a reason for Pearson's departure. Pearson announced with a note on Twitter later Monday he was entering the transfer portal, along with "Nothing But Love." Through WKU's first two games - losses to Louisville and Liberty - Pearson had nine receptions for 96 yards, with 29 yards on four receptions in Saturday's 30-24 loss to the Flames. Pearson is the second receiver to depart the team since the start of fall camp last month. - BG Daily News

  09/12/20 - Sam WilliamsrSr/2022, Mississippi, 6-4, 258 (DS#8 OLB) + More +

Ole Miss football received news that linebacker Sam Williams will return to the field this fall after his sexual battery charges were dropped on Tuesday. He started practicing with the team again on Sunday. "With no pending charges, Sam Williams has returned to football activities," Ole Miss Athletics said. "We defer to his legal council on questions regarding his case." In July, the Ole Miss linebacker and defensive lineman was arrested for sexual battery, according to a police report obtained by the Clarion Ledger. The report states that Williams was arrested on the morning of July 24 and was released later that afternoon after paying a $25,000 bond. Head coach Lane Kiffin was asked to speak of the linebacker's return in his weekly press conference. "To my knowledge, Sam had been working out. He wasn't working out with us because he was away from all team activities," Kiffin said. "But we did see him a little bit. We worked him in yesterday, and obviously, he has a ways to go, but you can see why. Really, that's our first time with him with no spring ball. You can see flashes of why he's shown to be a really good player at times." - Daily Mississippian

  09/10/20 - Sam WilliamsrSr/2022, Mississippi, 6-4, 258 (DS#8 OLB) + More +

Ole Miss linebacker Sam Williams has been reinstated to football activities as of Tuesday after the legal charges against him were dropped. Williams was suspended on July 25 after he was charged by Oxford police with sexual battery. Per a statement from the Ole Miss athletic department, that case is no longer active and Williams can resume team activity. "With no pending charges, Sam Williams has returned to football activities," the statement reads. "We defer to his legal counsel on questions regarding his case."

Williams led Ole Miss with six sacks in 2019. The senior from Alabama came to Ole Miss after leading all junior college players in sacks in 2018. Williams also finished with 9.5 tackles for loss, five quarterback hurries, one interception and one forced fumble last season. "To my knowledge, Sam had been working out," Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin said. "He'd not been working out with us because he was separated from all team activities. But we did see him a little bit. We worked him in yesterday. Obviously he's got a ways to go but you can see flashes of why he's shown to be a really good player at times." - The Clarion Ledger

  09/10/20 - *Elijah MooreJr/2021, Mississippi, 5-10, 178 (DS#5 WR) + More +

Junior receiver Elijah Moore spoke to the media on Friday for the first time since his excessive celebration penalty at the end of the Egg Bowl effectively cost Ole Miss a chance to tie or win the game. Based on the way he talked about the incident, Moore seems like he's moved past the criticism and attention he drew. "I just tried to flip the page," Moore said. "I've got a new coach. That's a blessing. I'm just trying to be positive and leave the past in the past and be a better player overall. Just learn from my lessons. It's been motivating. Being a young man, you know everyone makes mistakes. I don't really use them as losses. I take them as a lesson. I learn from my lessons."

Moore led Ole Miss with 67 catches for 850 yards and six touchdowns a season ago. Among returning SEC players who have not opted out of the 2020 season, only Alabama's DeVonta Smith and Texas A&M's Jhamon Ausbon had more receiving yards last season. First-year Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin has singled Moore out as one of the standouts in the receiver room, saying he's consistently made big plays in the team's scrimmages. Given that he had more catches and receiving yards last year than all of Ole Miss' other returning wide receivers combined, it stands to reason that he'll have to be the main target in this Ole Miss offense. - The Clarion Ledger

  09/06/20 - Spencer SandersrSr/2024, Mississippi, 6-1, 209 (DS#32 QB) + More +

He quarterbacked OSU to seven wins in 10 games last season before a thumb injury effectively ended his season. Mike Gundy declined to place Sanders in the realm of Rudolph 2016, Weeden 2011 or Robinson 2008, NFL-level quarterbacks who were embarking on their second season leading the Cowboys. "Spencer's further along than he was at this time last year," Gundy said of Sanders. "He still has a ways to go; he missed quite a few games with injury. So I'm not sure that he falls into the category of a veteran seasoned quarterback. "I would say that in the latter part of this season, if he continues to work and compete, that he can get in that category." But Sanders has notched three road wins, including at 23rd-ranked Iowa State. He passed for more than 2,000 yards, rushed for 109 yards at both Oregon State and Texas, and threw 16 touchdown passes. Sanders also threw 11 interceptions and was prone to fumble, so he's got to correct the turnover bug. - Daily Oklahoman

  09/05/20 - Tavius RobinsonrSr/2023, Mississippi, 6-6, 257 (DS#20 DE) + More +

If there is one part of football that is consistently overlooked, it's the defense. There are rarely huge headlines for sacks or forced fumbles, but the official addition of Canadian transfer Tavius Robinson to Ole Miss Football's defense has potential to change that this season. The SEC has never been accused of being an easy conference, and this year will be even more difficult. With a full season of only SEC conference games, the depth in training and health of players will be vital to the overall success of this team. In a press conference on Sept. 1, head coach Lane Kiffin stressed the importance of making sure that all players are ready to play and confirmed that the team has had multiple players test positive for COVID-19 in the last two weeks.

"We've got competition all over the place, and it's like picking out of a hat every day. You don't know who is going to be there," Kiffin said. . "I get texts in the morning, these 3 people failed their COVID-19 tests. Here are some more in close contact. So it's hard to even figure out who our first and second units are because it is changing so much." Kiffin did not disclose the total number of positive cases within the team. The frustration of losing players isn't limited to COVID-19 either. With the recent loss of expected NFL draft prospect Sam Williams, who was arrested on sexual battery charges in late July, there was a large spot to fill in the outside linebacker position. Thankfully for Kiffin and his defense, Tavius Robinson is able to fill those shoes. Over the weekend, the NCAA announced that Tavius Robinson, the six-eight, Canadian transfer would be granted immediate eligibility to play for the Rebels this fall. - Daily Mississippian
