The Miami Hurricanes intend to play a full college football season this fall and are planning to start bringing players back to campus on a voluntary basis in June, with full-squad workouts by July, according to a UM source briefed on the situation. And even though UM president Julio Frenk said last week that fans "probably" will not be at Hurricanes games this season because of the coronavirus pandemic, Frenk was less adamant about that in his most recent public comments, and UM officials remain hopeful that at least some fans will be able to attend.

The UM source cautioned that dates are not yet set for the return of student athletes to campus - and players hadn't been informed of those intentions as of the weekend - but the plan is to start bringing them back in June for some activities that likely will include a strength and conditioning component. UM athletic director Blake James told The Miami Herald that the Canes expect to play their full schedule this fall and have not discussed postponing or canceling non-conference games (Temple, UAB, Wagner and Michigan State). - Miami Herald

King said he's not concerned with matching his 50-touchdown season for Houston in 2018. "I just want to win," King said. "I know for a guy like me, there is nothing more important than winning. I can do the 50 touchdown thing or whatever, but if we don't win, especially at The U, it doesn't mean anything." King, who hopes to play in the NFL and wants to be a college coach eventually, said: "When you're 5-9, you have to prove you can play quarterback. I had to do everything this much better. Even at Houston I knew I was playing well, but I was in the moment. If I would have done that and I was 6-3, I'd be declaring" for the NFL Draft. - Miami Herald

  05/12/20 - Bubba BoldenSr/2022, Miami + More +

Miami Hurricanes safety Bubba Bolden was peaking when his first season at UM came to an abrupt halt, the product of an ankle injury in celebration of his first interception as a Hurricane in early November at Florida State. Bolden was likely to return to the team at some point during spring drills after the mid-air collision with fellow safety Gurvan Hall in celebration of his takeaway caused him to land awkwardly on the ankle. The long, 6-foot-3, 184-pound redshirt junior was recovering quickly, according to Miami defensive coordinator Blake Baker, before the coronavirus pandemic suspended all college athletic activities in March. "He was recovering at a very fast pace, and really, we probably, for sure, were going to get him the second half of spring," Baker said in a web conference with reporters last week. "I think he'll be 100 percent, for sure, ready to go [when the team gets back together]." - Sun Sentinel

  05/06/20 - Chad ThomasSr/2018, Miami + More +

Chad Thomas is building quite the hip-hop resume. The former Miami Hurricane produced and sung the hook on "Trap Back," a track from Young Thug and Chris Brown's joint mixtape "Slime & B" which released Tuesday. Thomas, who raps under the name "Major Nine," has previously produced songs for Rick Ross, Kodak Black and City Girls. The Liberty City native is by no means an average musician. In addition to being able to read and write music, Thomas plays nine instruments (piano, organ, drums, guitar, bass guitar, trombone, clarytone, tuba and trumpet), according to Bleacher Report. "It was just listening to music and then coming up in the church, watching the musicians," Thomas told The Washington Post of his musical origins. "... I just said I wanted to do it. I didn't want to play just one instrument though. I wanted to play all the instruments." - Miami Herald

On Monday, Hurricanes defensive coordinator Blake Baker said Rousseau, who had a spectacular 2019 with 15.5 sacks and 19.5 tackles-for-loss among humongous nationally-heralded stats, said Rousseau can improve even more. "Greg is such a humble and hard-working kid, [and] as good as the year he's had last year, there's so much he can get better at and some things we've shown him on film where he really needs to get better. He takes hard coaching. He's a guy that is a perfect role model for our young guys. Statistically and obviously throughout the media he is getting so much attention but he's still the same humble, hard working kid that he was on the first day he walked on to campus. "...Then you put in the mix with Quincy Roche, who has elite ability to turn the corner and really flatten out the pass rush." - Miami Herald

We have heard plenty lately from the University of Miami's new, intriguing offensive side of the ball, thanks to new coordinator Rhett Lashlee. Monday, the defensive side got its shot. Hurricanes defensive coordinator Blake Baker went on 560 WQAM radio to talk about all things defense for Miami, which seemed like a good break for the coach, who is working from home as his wife Roslyn navigates most of the family care for children ages 5, 2 and 8 months. Host Joe Rose asked "how good, potentially," are Temple graduate transfer defensive end Quincy Roche, redshirt sophomore defensive end Greg Rousseau and former UCLA defensive end Jaelan Phillips - the latter rated by 247Sports as the No. 1 player in the recruiting class of 2017.

Phillips, in only 10 career games at UCLA, had 41 tackles, including eight for losses and 4 1/2 sacks. Various significant injuries limited him to four games in 2018. He sat out last year after transferring to UM and will be a redshirt junior when UM's next season begins. "Getting Jaelan Phillips in there...We got four [spring] practices in and he hadn't played football for coming on nearly two years. But man, he's just a natural. You know how you create a player on your video game? That's how you create a defensive end from a physical standpoint. He still has a long way to go just not playing the game for a couple years. He's still knocking some of the rust off." - Miami Herald

Two years ago, Mark Richt was coaching the Miami Hurricanes and Greg Rousseau was an incoming freshman for UM that was looking to make his mark in college. It would've been hard to imagine then that, in the not-too-distant future, Richt would be interviewing Rousseau on Instagram Live for something called ACC Network, for which Richt is now a studio analyst, while everyone is staying at home during a coronavirus outbreak. But Miami's star defensive end, who was second to only Ohio State's Chase Young with 15½ sacks last season as a redshirt freshman, joined his first college coach for an interview on Sunday afternoon. He updated Richt on the Hurricanes since he retired from coaching after the 2018 season, leading Manny Diaz to get the head role.

"We're going to do big things this year. I definitely believe it," said Rousseau. "[Diaz] is just one of those coaches that everybody just gravitates toward and rallies around. He's a great leader." On what the Hurricanes have built over the offseason, Rousseau said, "Accountability and trust. Just gaining the trust for one another, holding everyone accountable for the little things like not missing weigh-ins or not being late for anything, go to class, doing everything right. And we know that if we get all the little things right, we're going to be real big-time at the end." - Sun Sentinel

  04/17/20 - K.J. OsbornSr/2020, Miami + More +

Some folks have their favorite song as a cellphone ringtone. K.J. Osborn has his dream. Since Osborn transferred to the University of Miami from Buffalo last year, every time the Hurricanes' 2019 leading receiver gets a text message, he is reminded of that dream. "It's the tune they play when someone gets picked in the NFL Draft,'' Osborn, 22, told the Miami Herald this week during a phone interview. "It goes like 'doo-doo-doo dooo-dooo doo-doo.' It never gets old. You know how people silence their phones during long group texts? I don't because I love hearing it." That Osborn sang the tune in almost perfect pitch was impressive. That he ends up on an NFL roster would be, for him, spectacular. Osborn is one of eight Hurricanes who were invited to the NFL Scouting Combine. All eight have a decent chance to be drafted, but the widely held projections have them selected in the third and final day of the draft on Saturday - rounds four through seven.

Osborn is the Hurricane who turned heads at the Combine. The thickly built 5-11 1/2, 203-pound graduate transfer impressed NFL personnel by running a 4.48-second 40 and bench-pressing 18 reps, sixth most among the 33 wide receivers who chose to lift. AT UM, Osborn started all 13 games last season and led the Canes in receptions (50), receiving yards (547), punt returns (16), punt-return yardage (225) and all-purpose yards (1,018). He likely would have had more receiving yardage had UM's quarterback position not fallen apart the last half of the season. He finished his career, including Buffalo, with 96 catches for 1,490 yards and 12 touchdowns. - Miami Herald

  04/15/20 - DEriq KingrSr/2022, Miami + More +

King, from Manvel, Texas, set the American Athletic Conference touchdowns-responsible-for-in-a-season record in 2018 with 50 - 36 passing and 14 rushing. And that was done despite missing his last two-and-a-half games with a right-knee injury. He was 219 of 345 (63 percent) for 2,982 yards and his 36 passing touchdowns, with six interceptions. He also had 111 carries for 674 yards, a 6.1-yards-per-carry average. Additionally, in 2019 during Houston's game at Tulane, King set the FBS record for consecutive games (15) with a passing and rushing touchdown, breaking former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow's record.

"So far, D'Eriq has been everything we thought he would be,'' Lashlee said. "He's just a great person. He's a leader. His teammates love him. He comes out and he just works hard. He has a passion for winning for his teammates and for wanting to be as good as he can be. One of the things that he gives us is he gives us great experience and so that can only help him when he's out there competing for the job." All bodes well for King, who, barring something very bizarre, is expected to win the quarterback job. - Miami Herald

Oregon tight end Cam McCormick, who missed all but a portion of one game over the last two seasons due to injury, was granted a waiver from the NCAA for an additional two seasons of eligibility, his mother confirmed to The Oregonian/OregonLive. Cam McCormick broke his leg during the 2018 season opener against Bowling Green and missed 2019 due to an offseason high-ankle sprain that required season-ending surgery. Duck Territory first reported the additional eligibility granted to McCormick, who was due to be a senior this fall, which was confirmed by his mother, Debra McCormick. Cam McCormick redshirted in 2016 and had six catches for 89 yards and a touchdown in 2017. He's one of five scholarship tight ends on Oregon's roster. - The Oregonian

OU receivers coach Dennis Simmons' next task is shaping his former freshmen in that mold. Charleston Rambo, the leading receiver back next season, will factor into that mission, too, coach Lincoln Riley added. The Sooners are again re-establishing new threats downfield, just as they did after the careers of Sterling Shepard, Dede Westbrook and Marquise Brown. "That's the next step that we always talk about. We've got a lot of guys on this team on both sides of the ball, skill, everything, that are prime to make that [jump]," Riley said. "This is not new to them. For us to be the team we want to be, they are going to have to take the next step and that's often the hardest step to take."

Rambo's transformation is well underway. Before spring practices were suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, he reported for duty with an improved physique. "His body has really, probably more period than I can ever remember, has really started to change and really develop. I'm excited about that," Riley said. Rambo was a dangerous target early last year, totaling three 100-yard receiving games in the first four weeks of the season. That led to a breakout campaign of 743 yards and 5 TDs for the year. "We are going to need him to lead us and lead that group because he is one of our older, more experienced guys in that room," Riley said. "There's going to be a lot of young guys that are going to be asked to contribute and are going to get a lot of opportunities. But you've got to have leaders in that room and he has to be that guy for us. Period." - Norman Transcript

Not only do the Hurricanes have two defensive ends who combined for 28.5 sacks last season in Greg Rousseau and Quincy Roche, but the staff is also very encouraged by what they have seen from former five-star recruit Jaelan Phillips and redshirt freshman Jahfari Harvey. Phillips, who transferred from UCLA after the 2018 season and sat out last season while enrolled at Miami, looked good in UM's first four practices after transforming his body from 220 to 262 pounds since arriving on campus last year. "He flashes and shows a lot of promise," defensive line coach Todd Stroud said in a phone conversation Thursday. "He runs very well for a big guy. It's a shame we got only four practices in, but he got his feet wet. He had to knock off the rust. He's got a very good skill set. He's eager to learn.

"Jaelan is an elite pass rusher. The system they played at UCLA is totally different than ours, but he adapts very well and likes our system. He can be a devastating" presence off the edge. In just 10 career games at UCLA, he had 41 tackles, including eight for loss and 4.5 sacks. He was limited to four games in 2018, his final season at UCLA, because of a concussion and other injuries. He's now fully recovered from a wrist injury that affected him last year while he sat out. - Miami Herald

  03/12/20 - DEriq KingrSr/2022, Miami + More +

UM so far has been thoroughly impressed by everything with quarterback D'Eriq King, including - as expected - high marks for leadership, arm strength and mobility. "He's going to bring a different dimension," said one person who watched him closely last week. "He can make all the throws, but you say that about a lot of quarterbacks. His ability to escape pressure will help all of their offensive line issues. Very smooth runner."

Beyond throwing a nice deep ball, King is adept at the type of quick throws that new coordinator Rhett Lashlee wants in this spread offense, particularly the intermediate throws that demand anticipating where a receiver is going to be, not where he is when the ball is thrown. And don't discount the leadership, which was lacking at the position last season. Throughout last week, King stayed after practice to work with receivers. He ran sprints and worked on throwing drills. There was no rush to get off the field. - Miami Herald

  03/07/20 - Quincy RocherSr/2021, Miami + More +

University of Miami graduate transfer defensive end Quincy Roche, the 2019 American Athletic Conference Player of the Year, said he once 'chased down' new UM quarterback D'Eriq King when King played for Houston and Roche was at Temple. The two are now roommates and good buddies, which should make for compelling conversations. "Yeah, we had a couple of run-ins during the game," Roche, who spoke to the media after spring practice Friday, told UM broadcaster Joe Zagacki with a chuckle during a WQAM interview just after signing day in February. "I actually got a sack during that game. Very dynamic with his feet, very dynamic with his arm. I'm really glad I don't have to play against him." King, a prolific signal caller who threw for 36 touchdowns and ran for another 14 in 2018 alone, was asked that day by Zagacki if Roche "got you one time." "I don't remember that," King said. "I'm not going to admit that." That's because according to the official stats, Roche never sacked King.

The two actually played against each other twice, in 2018 when King threw for 322 yards and five touchdowns (with one interception) and ran for another 125 yards and a score in a 59-49 loss; and in 2017 when King played receiver and Houston won 20-13. Roche, the 6-4, 235-pound Sports Illustrated first-team All-American who finished last season with 19 tackles for loss and 13 sacks (tied for seventh most in the country), had three tackles each of his games against King, plus one fumble recovery and forced fumble. - Miami Herald
