The Miami Hurricanes' defensive end combination of Greg Rousseau and Quincy Roche - two of college football's top 10 sack leaders from last season - could already be one of the nation's fiercest tandems. That doesn't even account for what redshirt junior Jaelan Phillips could provide the UM pass rush this fall. The former five-star recruit has finally practiced with the team during the start of spring drills after sitting out all of 2019, following his transfer from UCLA. It's evident Phillips is motivated to contribute as Miami's next pass-rushing specialist. Rousseau and Roche, a grad transfer from Temple, had a combined 28 1/2 sacks last season. "He's a special dude," defensive coordinator Blake Baker said of Phillips. "The thing that's very impressive about him is how well he hits. He understands leverage. He does a great job getting into the offensive tackle's pads."

That's especially encouraging considering Phillips hasn't played in almost two years. Before sitting out in 2019, he missed most of 2018 at UCLA with a concussion and various other injuries. "He's a freak of nature. He's huge. He's fast," Rousseau said. "I'm just happy for him because I know what it's like to come back from an injury. It's tough, and he's worked so hard for these moments and he's really going to take advantage of them. I believe in him 100 percent. We all do." Coach Manny Diaz said that Phillips' presence could push Rousseau and Roche. - Sun Sentinel

Ed Reed is going back to his roots and rejoining the Miami Hurricanes. The Pro Football Hall of Famer has been hired as the new chief of staff for the Hurricanes' football program, a deal that was announced Thursday and will be finalized when the school completes a standard background check. Reed will be tasked with helping Miami coach Manny Diaz “in all aspects of the football program, including strategic planning, quality control, operations, player evaluation and player development,” the university said in a statement. Reed's duties will also include team building, student-athlete mentorship and as much recruiting as is allowed under NCAA rules.

"We are thrilled to welcome Ed back to Coral Gables," Diaz said. "He is not only one of the most decorated players in Miami football history but also a devoted Cane who cares deeply about this program. All of our players, coaches and staff will be fortunate to tap into his experience, knowledge and passion on a regular basis." Reed was a five-time All-Pro safety, a member of the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team, the 2004 Defensive Player of the Year and made nine Pro Bowls. He had 64 career interceptions, led the league in that stat three times and scored 13 non-offense touchdowns in his career with the Baltimore Ravens. - AP College Football

  01/20/20 - DEriq KingrSr/2022, Miami + More +

Former Houston quarterback D'Eriq King announced Monday that he is transferring to Miami, a significant get for the Hurricanes as they try to bounce back from a 6-7 season. King played in four games for Houston this past season before announcing in late September that he would take the rest of 2019 off and redshirt to preserve eligibility for 2020. "Story is still being written..." King wrote in a tweet announcing the move.

King had at least one rushing touchdown and at least one passing touchdown in each of his last 15 games with Houston - a streak that broke the FBS record held by former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow. For comparison's sake, Miami quarterbacks have had 15 such games in the last nine seasons combined. King announced a week ago that he was transferring and visited Miami over the weekend. The Hurricanes struggled with consistency at the quarterback spot for much of the year. King's best season at Houston was in 2018, when he threw for 36 touchdowns and rushed for 14 more. He left the Cougars with 4,925 passing yards, 1,421 rushing yards and 504 receiving yards. King split time between receiver and quarterback in 2016 and 2017, making 58 catches for three touchdowns. - AP College Football

Jose Borregales finally was wanted by the Miami Hurricanes. Beating them was all it took. The former FIU kicker - who played a huge role in the Panthers’ stunning upset win over the Hurricanes in November - announced in a tweet Sunday that he’s enrolling at Miami as a graduate transfer. He’ll be on campus Monday, when the Hurricanes will be able to officially confirm his arrival. "UM has always been my dream school and still is," Borregales said in a telephone interview. "I was raised here in Miami. I watched them play growing up. It was pretty much a straightforward decision on where I was going."

Hundreds of players transfer each year, but Borregales' story stands out for many reasons. Borregales made it known in his high school days that he wanted to play at Miami; the Hurricanes ignored him, so he committed to FIU in 2015 and has "had a chip on my shoulder ever since," he said. His brother, Andres Borregales, is committed to Miami and is scheduled to be part of the school’s 2021 recruiting class. - AP College Football

  12/13/19 - *Jeff ThomasJr/2020, Miami + More +

Another Miami Hurricanes underclassman has declared early for the NFL Draft, and this time it won't surprise anyone familiar with Canes football. Junior receiver Jeff Thomas is the latest Cane to leave the Hurricanes football program. He announced his plans Friday on Instagram to skip the Dec. 26 Independence Bowl and enter the 2020 NFL Draft. This season, Thomas underwhelmed with 31 catches for 379 yards and three touchdowns - fourth best for UM behind K.J. Osborn, Michael Harley and Brevin Jordan. In 2018, Thomas was dismissed for the final two games after a source told the Miami Herald that Thomas clashed with his former position coach and left the team angrily, choosing not to attend subsequent meetings. It was at least formerly a recurring theme of his career. He was suspended two games this season for violating team policy. Thomas' final career numbers: 83 catches for 1,316 yards and eight touchdowns in 34 games played. This season he rushed seven times for 41 yards. In addition to Thomas, junior defensive end Jon Garvin previously announced he was forgoing his senior season to enter the draft. - The Miami Herald
