Miami Hurricanes redshirt senior D'Eriq King is one of 30 quarterbacks named to the watch list for the Davey O'Brien Award - presented annually to the nation's best college quarterback. King transferred to UM from Houston this offseason for his final year of eligibility. With the Cougars, King accounted for 78 total touchdowns - 50 passing and 28 rushing - 4,295 passing yards and 1,421 rushing yards in 22 starts. He did most of his damage in 2018 as a junior, when he set the American Athletic Conference (AAC) record for "touchdowns responsible for" with 50. That year, he was a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award and Earl Campbell Award. King maintained his eligibility for a fifth season after only playing in four games in 2019. Miami's two previous Heisman Trophy winners are the only two Hurricanes to win the O'Brien Award: Vinny Testaverde (1986) and Gino Torretta (1992). - Sun Sentinel

The latest college football development has transpired for the University of Miami and its fellow league members. And though it seems minor on the surface, it's likely rolling toward more significant news. The Atlantic Coast Conference announced Monday that it "has postponed its virtual ACC Football Kickoff media event until further notice." The "virtual" event, usually held in person on site in Charlotte, North Carolina, was originally scheduled online for July 21-23 in light of the coronavirus pandemic. Each ACC school has its head coach speak, as well as two high-profile players. Monday's announcement seems to be snowballing toward what almost seems like the inevitable collapse of the 2020 college football season. And that's knowing that major conferences such as the ACC have already announced they will only play fellow conference members, should the season proceed. - Miami Herald

D'Eriq King only has gotten to practice with the Miami Hurricanes a handful of times. He got to participate in winter workouts shortly after he transferred from the Houston Cougars, then got to participate in four spring practices before the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to shut down. In the past few weeks, he has gotten work out on Coral Gables again, too. He only needed one practice to pick out who the biggest "freak" on the roster was, and it's not necessarily the obvious choice. "Cam Harris, the running back," King said in an appearance on Siriux XM's "Packer and Durham" on Wednesday.

Mark Packer, one of the two hosts of the ACC Network-simulcasted show, asked King who had stood out to him so far. "Who is the one guy that you go, 'You know what? That guy is a freak?'" he asked. The quarterback singled out his likely starting running back. "When I first saw him run, when I first got there for my first workout I was like, 'Whoa, this guy's this big, running that fast?'" King said. "And then we got to spring ball and he showed out all four days, so he surprised the heck out of me. I'm anxious to see him play this year." - Miami Herald

Charleston Rambo's breakout 2019 campaign (743 receiving yards, five receiving touchdowns, 17.3 yards per catch) went under the radar because of CeeDee Lamb, OU's lone All-America selection last season. Lamb is now a Dallas Cowboy, opening the door for Rambo to be the Sooners' top pass-catcher and making that jump has generally worked out over the last five years. When star OU receiver Sterling Shepard left Norman following the 2015 season, Dede Westbrook became "the guy" in 2016. After Westbrook departed for the pros, Marquise Brown became the Sooners' top target for two years. Then, following Brown's matriculation to the NFL, Lamb asserted himself as OU's No. 1 receiver. In terms of other experienced receivers, there's little to get in Rambo's way of that being the case for himself this upcoming year. - Norman Transcript

Miami Hurricanes senior offensive lineman Navaughn Donaldson announced on Wednesday he will redshirt the 2020 season. "After talking to family and the coaching staff I decided to redshirt and focus on me this season," Donaldson tweeted on Wednesday afternoon. Donaldson, who started 34 games his first three seasons with the Hurricanes, suffered a right knee injury in the regular-season finale at Duke last season.

He missed the Independence Bowl against Louisiana Tech, and was set to sit out UM's slate of spring practices before the coronavirus pandemic stopped all college athletic activities in March. Taking a redshirt season allows Donaldson to take his time recovering from the knee injury while retaining eligibility for a fifth season in 2021. Donaldson (6 foot 6, 345 pounds) started at left guard for the Hurricanes all junior season. Midseason, coaches began platooning John Campbell in with him to help keep Donaldson fresh. - Sun Sentinel

For the second offseason in a row, head coach Manny Diaz spent his winter and spring reshaping the Miami Hurricanes. He changed coaches to overhaul schemes and brought in transfers to plug roster holes. He reignited some excitement in the program for at least some segment of the fan base. Count Ray Lewis among those feeling good about Miami's direction. The former Hurricane, who is on the ballot for the College Football Hall of Fame, thinks Miami might be on the verge of a breakthrough. "I'm ready to see that. I really am," Lewis said Monday. "I am really optimistic that everything can change." "It's the swagger through the execution of togetherness," Lewis said. "I'm telling you: We were so dominant here because of what we did together and how we communicated, so to start to see that come back to the U is what I'm waiting on."

One addition he is particularly confident about is Miami's new chief of staff. In February, the Hurricanes announced Ed Reed would be joining Miami in a new role. Reed, who played with Lewis on the Baltimore Ravens after a legendary career of his own for the Hurricanes, will assist Miami and Diaz in a variety of capacities. Lewis is just excited to have his friend's experience once again become a formal part of the program he loves. "There's two things you can guarantee he brings: Experience and probably the best safety to ever play the game, right?" Lewis said. "To know that Ed comes back, the kids gain so much, but they have to really be willing to speak to him because you've got to be willing to listen to those lessons and a lot of those lessons take a long time but Ed - he's wise way beyond his years, man, so I think he brings a lot of experience and a lot of knowledge." - Miami Herald

Ken Dorsey is finally getting his due as a candidate on the ballot for the College Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2021 and two other former Miami Hurricanes are again up for consideration, but Howard Schnellenberger was snubbed yet again. Dorsey, who played quarterback for Miami from 1999-2002 and was a two-time Heisman Trophy finalist, is a new addition to the ballot and one of 78 FBS players in consideration for the Hall of Fame's 2021 class.

Ray Lewis and Dan Morgan, two of the most accomplished linebackers in Hurricanes history, are also on the ballot after missing the cut for the Hall in recent years. Members of the National Football Federation will now vote on who makes the cut for the class, which will be announced in early 2021. Morgan, who has been on the ballot since 2018, is the Hurricanes' all-time leader with 532 tackles and his 150 tackles in 1998 are the third most in a single season in Miami history. In 2000, the linebacker became the first player in college football history to win the Butkus Award as the nation's top linebacker, and the Bronco Nagurski Trophy and Chuck Bednarik Award as the nation's top defensive player. He was a first-team All-American. - Miami Herald

The Miami Hurricanes kick off "Phase 1" of bringing athletes back on to campus Monday with the first wave of athletes gaining access to campus facilities for voluntary workouts. Miami is welcoming 65 football players, all of whom already live in South Florida, as it kicks off its formal "return-to-campus plan" as Florida continues to reopen amid the COVID-10 pandemic "We are excited to start bringing our student-athletes and staff back to campus," athletic director Blake James said in a release. "We have worked diligently with our colleagues on campus and at UHealth to ensure that we have a plan in place to bring them back safely and securely and that is consistent with the broader University plan." The Hurricanes' plan calls for baseline COVID-19 testing, contact tracing, and daily symptom and temperature screening, the university announced. Miami put together its safety protocol with input from university officials, UHealth physicians and administrators, UHealth Sports Medicine, and local and state officials. - Miami Herald

Miami Hurricanes football coach Manny Diaz apparently didn't have to hard-sell his previously underachieving program to heralded Houston quarterback transfer D'Eriq King, the coach indicated Thursday in a radio interview four days before the team begins formal strength and conditioning training on campus. "D'Eriq King could have gone to a lot of great schools,'' Diaz told WQAM. "We told him, 'Come watch our guys work out. Come watch our wide receivers go through a lifting session. Come see how hungry our guys are.' "You've got a football team that at a couple positions you just need a little better leadership than we've had, a little bit better in terms of a guy that the team can trust - and not just the quarterback, across the board. And these guys start to see this and they're like 'You know what, I get it. I get that I can push this thing over the edge."

King, one of the most prolific players in college football, announced his transfer to UM (6-7 in 2019) in late January after his campus visit, in time to enroll and participate in the four spring practices before school came to a halt because of the coronavirus pandemic. He has been back on campus informally throwing to his receivers at Greentree Field, which Diaz told the Miami Herald last week opened to players on June 2. - Miami Herald

The Miami Hurricanes have turned to the transfer portal once again, this time to bolster one of the shakiest positions on the roster. Jarrid Williams, an offensive lineman from the Houston Cougars, is transferring to Miami. The 6-foot-7, 305-pound lineman announced his decision with a Twitter post Sunday. "I have been blessed with the opportunity to be recruited by and learn from some amazing football coaches," Williams wrote, then listed out all the schools he was considering. "With that being said I have decided to finish my career and get my Master's Degree at the University of Miami."

Williams will be a redshirt senior in the fall and will be eligible to play immediately for the Hurricanes. It will be his sixth and final season of eligibility after he took a medical redshirt in 2019 because of an ankle injury. He picked Miami from a top group, which also included the Florida State Seminoles, Ole Miss Rebels, Baylor Bears and Southern California Trojans. Williams is the second offensive lineman the Hurricanes have added through the transfer portal this offseason. Last month, offensive lineman Isaiah Walker Jr. transferred from the Florida Gators to hometown Miami before ever playing a game in Gainesville. Unlike Williams, Walker will likely have to sit out the 2019 season. - Miami Herald

Preston Williams was a rookie hit for the Miami Dolphins last season after he spent several offseason weekends working out with former All-Pro wide receiver Brandon Marshall. And now UM receiver Mike Harley Jr. hopes to reap the same benefits from working with the ex-NFL star. Harley is in Atlanta now, but he and Marshall have spent a lot of time training together in South Florida this offseason, doing on-field work (including route-running), plus conditioning and weight work. Marshall took a liking to Harley when Harley was a standout high school player at Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas. - Miami Herald
