Field said that Brevin Jordan, who also spoke Friday and has returned to practice after missing the last four games of the season with a foot injury, looks "really, really good." Jordan, one of three 2019 Mackey Award finalists, was his usual upbeat self and said he was excited about the new offense. "They use us in a way that we're all over the field,'' said Jordan, who despite the injury, finished the season with 495 receiving yards and two touchdowns on 35 catches.. "We're outside, we're in the slot, we're in the backfield, we're lined up on the line. We're adjusters, that's our position. Coach Lashlee loves to throw the ball to us. He loves to just get the ball to guys in space and let them go to work. That's what's so great about his offense." Will Mallory, also on the videoconference, agreed the new offense "really opens up and uses the athletes we have on this team." "I consider our tight end room extremely athletic, and it really opens up for us to make plays, run around and be the athletes that we are. "It will showcase what we do at a high level and high pace." - Miami Herald

"A special dude," is how UM defensive coordinator Blake Baker described Phillips. "It's like creating a player on NCAA Football, when they used to have that video game. He has very low body fat percentage [and is] flexible. Very, very smart young man, so he's got all the tangibles and intangibles." Defensive line coach Todd Stroud, who has been coaching college football since 1986, said for a 270-pounder, Phillips "runs like a safety." "His ability to run and jump and twitch...I would put Jaelan Phillips in the 99th percentile of any player I've ever coached in terms of physical attributes. "The athlete meets the hype as far as him being a five-star guy." Phillips had 21 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 3 1/2 sacks (second on team) and two pass breakups as a UCLA true freshman in 2017. In four games as a sophomore in 2018, he had 20 tackles, a tackle for loss, a sack and quarterback hurry, but he was plagued with injuries, including concussions and a severe wrist injury after the car accident. - Miami Herald

With Rousseau opting out, Jaelan Phillips and Jahfari Harvey will get more snaps as UM's second and third defensive ends (behind Quincy Roche), and several players (Jason Blissett, Chantz Williams, Cameron Williams, Jared Harrison-Hunte) will get a chance to compete for the No. 4 job. Here's what defensive line coach Todd Stroud told me this summer about Phillips and Harvey: "Jaelan is an elite pass rusher. The system they played at UCLA is totally different than ours, but he adapts very well and likes our system. He can be a devastating [force]. He runs very well for a big guy. It's a shame we got only four practices in, but he got his feet wet. He had to knock off the rust. He's got a very good skill set. He's eager to learn..."Jahfari is not as vertical as those other [edge] guys," Stroud said. "He's 6-3 and he's extremely powerful. He was 218 when he got here, and he's over 240 right now. "As far as flat-out speed and ability to run, he's our most elite defensive end in terms of how he runs. He's very twitchy, and his short-area speed is unbelievable. He seems to be getting a better grip on our defense, which allows him to play full speed more. He's responded to the pressure of having to learn this defense very well." - Miami Herald

University of Miami star pass rusher Greg Rousseau is opting out of the 2020 football season. Head coach Manny Diaz made the announcement at the end of a zoom call with reporters on Thursday. Coach Diaz said that he heard about Rousseau's decision while on the call. Rousseau is considered a potential Top 5 pick in the upcoming draft. Diaz said, "We've had a great relationship with Greg...outstanding young man. We want to thank him for everything he's done. We're going to support him every way we can. Looking to achieve his dreams of becoming an outstanding player in the National Football League." - Local 20 News Miami

  07/29/20 - Bubba BoldenSr/2022, Miami + More +

Safety Bubba Bolden, who sustained a season-ending ankle injury when celebrating an interception against FSU on Nov. 2, will be ready for the start of the season, safeties coach Ephraim Banda said. "He was recovering at a very fast pace and really probably for sure we would have got him the second half of spring," Baker said. "He'll be 100 percent ready to go for sure. We were just starting to see that glimpse of him last year, how good a player he can be. He's much taller, longer than [safeties Gurvan Hall and Amari Carter]. Really does a great job with his hips, covering a lot of ground, and does it deceptively with how long he is. The sky is the limit for a guy like Bubba Bolden. "With a full season and off-season, him getting comfortable we'll see even bigger improvement out of him next year." - Miami Herald

The University of Miami has a new starting quarterback - though the whole world knew who it would be. Graduate transfer D'Eriq King will take the reins in 2020 for the Hurricanes' new no-huddle, spread offense, if and when the season ever materializes during the COVID-19 pandemic. UM released the news Monday. "D'Eriq's hard work both on and off the field has earned him the starting quarterback position," coach Manny Diaz said of the quick, elusive starter, who greatly impressed coaches and teammates during only four days of spring football practice. "His leadership qualities have been evident since he arrived on campus, continuing through mat drills, spring practice, our virtual meetings and summer activities. We're excited to see him lead this offense and I know his teammates are excited as well." - Miami Herald
