  09/10/20 - CamRon HarrisSr/2022, Miami + More +

Cam'Ron Harris ran for 134 yards and scored twice to lead Miami to a 31-14 season-opening win over UAB Thursday night. Harris' second touchdown from 4 yards late in the third period gave Miami a 24-14 lead after the Blazers of Conference USA got within three on Spencer Brown's 6-yard run. Houston graduate transfer D'Eriq King threw for a touchdown and scored one for Miami, which became the first school from a Power 5 conference to begin the game-depleted 2020 season. ACC, SEC and Big 12 schools will play football while the Big Ten and Pac-12 cancelled fall sports because of coronavirus concerns. King's 4-yard pass to Brevin Jordan with time expiring in the third quarter gave Miami its final margin. Thursday's attendance of 8,153 at Hard Rock Stadium fell short of the 20 percent cap allowed at the 65,000-seat venue's capacity in compliance with coronavirus social-distancing guidelines. Spectators were scattered throughout the stadium's lower and upper decks. - Miami/AP College Football

The veteran linebacker has totaled 139 tackles and 13.0 tackles for loss in his 44 career games. The heart and soul of Miami's defense, the Palm Beach County native has started 31 games in four previous seasons, including 11 as a true freshman in 2016, when Miami was the only team in the country to start three true freshman linebackers: McCloud, Shaquille Quarterman and Michael Pinckney. - Miami Football

Zach McCloud's thoughts on the impressiveness of 6-5, 270-pound defensive end Jaelen Phillips, who previously played for UCLA and was the No. 1 overall recruit coming out of high school in 2017: "One of the most impressive things about him is his just crazy relentless pursuit to the ball. [On] every play, every scrimmage after the whistle blows, he's still sprinting, getting the last little burst in. It's crazy to see somebody that big just be able to be that consistent all throughout practice, all throughout the game. His effort is something else." - Miami Herald

King has heard it for years: He's "too small" to play quarterback in the NFL. He told the Herald he stands just under 5-10 - "The last time I got measured I was 5-9 7/8 during summer workouts," he said. "But if you produce on the field then nothing else should matter. "I've been playing with 6-5, 6-6 linemen since high school. I've never had an issue seeing on the field. My daddy always told me, 'If you're 5-9, 5-10, you've got to do things 10 times better than a guy who is 6-3, 6-4, to even get the same shot.' "I've never seen a lineman 6-6, 6-7 play [standing] straight up. They bend. I find my lanes just fine." - Miami Herald

The speedy, agile King, who said he hadn't yet been timed at UM but was previously timed in the "low to mid 4.4s" in the 40-yard dash, also was a receiver and kickoff return specialist during his early Houston career. As a freshman in 2016, despite being a lifelong quarterback, he mostly played receiver, finishing with 29 catches for 228 yards and a touchdown. He became the first Houston player to throw a touchdown, catch a touchdown pass and return a kickoff for a touchdown in the same game (Texas State). As a sophomore in 2017, King ran for a team-best eight touchdowns and started the final four games at quarterback (with three starts at receiver), leading the Cougars with 1,260 passing yards and seven passing touchdowns. He finished third on the team with 29 catches for 264 yards and two touchdowns.

Last year, after Houston started 1-3 under coach Dana Holgorsen, it was announced that King would play only four games and thus retain his eligibility for another season. Houston finished 4-8, and in what turned out to be King's final game there against Tulane, he set the NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision record for consecutive games (15) with a passing or rushing touchdown, breaking former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow's record. - Miami Herald

One of the most-ballyhooed transfers in recent UM history apparently is displaying what made him a five-star recruit out of high school. Defensive end Jaelan Phillips, who signed with UCLA and transferred to Miami in 2019 and then sat out last season under NCAA transfer rules, "has had a phenomenal camp, one of the best camps of anyone on the defensive side of the ball," defensive coordinator Blake Baker told WQAM's Joe Rose Show on Monday. And that's critical, because Phillips is expected to replace NFL-bound Greg Rousseau (who opted out of playing this season) as a starter opposite Quincy Roche. "Phillips will surprise a lot of people," Baker said. "I think he'll kind of shock the world." - Miami Herald

  08/17/20 - DEriq KingrSr/2022, Miami + More +

New starting quarterback D'Eriq King, a graduate transfer from Houston and one of the most prolific playmakers in the nation, played like a winner in his first game action with the Hurricanes. UM reported that King completed 15 of 26 passes for 178 yards and four touchdowns. "He's had a great camp so far and had a great night last night,''Diaz told WQAM. "I mean four touchdown passes. And on a couple of those, I'm talking about outstanding coverage, [he] made some really, really good throws."

Diaz stressed that the defense was not allowed to tackle King, who nonetheless is also one of the best escape artists in the nation. "The guy is hard to tag. We're still playing tag on him. He's hard enough just to put a hand on, let alone when we have to bring him to the ground. "What we've been talking about is someone that the entire offense trusts and can rally around, and he's given us that. It was fun to watch him go out there and perform in a setting where you gotta move the ball and make things happen." - Miami Herald
