Navaughn Donaldson, Miami (FL), Player News

Right guard Navaughn Donaldson has impressed everyone in his return from December 2019 knee surgery, but the Canes suggested they want him to lose more weight. He's in the 350 range; he might be a bit more nimble at 325. Regardless, Donaldson and left tackle Zion Nelson look like UM's best offensive linemen. Donaldson "has gotten so much better with his feet and he's real physical," defensive tackle Jon Ford said. "He's been here with me forever. Going against him is a great battle. It helps my game." Incidentally, it was John Campbell - not one of the starters - who gave up the sack and safety to Deandre Johnson in the spring game. - Miami Herald

Now more than a year removed from knee surgery, Navaughn Donaldson has looked good in offseason workouts, and he's a clear favorite for a starting guard spot. "Navaughn is his best self," Justice told WQAM's Zagacki and Don Bailey Jr. on Friday. "Each week, you're seeing his confidence come back." Donaldson was cleared in time to be available for last December's Duke game. But "being cleared and being ready are two different things," Justice said. "He wasn't fully ready in a lot of ways. [Now] he fully trusts his knee. You're seeing the best of him week in and week out." - Miami Herald

With UM not having practiced in two weeks, Diaz said it's too early to tell whether Navaughn Donaldson will return this week simply as a backup or whether he will compete with Jakai Clark and D.J. Scaife to start at guard. "We have to get on the grass and see where Navaughn is at," Diaz said, noting it's not entirely clear how practice will look this week because of COVID limitations and there's "only so much rock 'em, sock 'em" that Miami can do in practice this week. That said, Diaz said the "five best guys" will play on Saturday at Duke. "We're happy we have Navaughn back," Diaz said. "He worked really hard in rehab" after a knee injury late last season. Donaldson is a redshirting senior and is able to return in 2021 if he chooses. - Miami Herald

Manny Diaz offered updates on two of UM's blue-chip recruits who haven't played this season. Guard Navaughn Donaldson, recovering from knee surgery after last season, "is not cleared for full contact practice," Diaz said. "He's working with our trainers and getting his movement skills back. He does some walk-through things for us when we're not in a contact setting for the offensive line." Diaz previously said that Donaldson might play at some point this season. Donaldson, a senior, previously announced plans to redshirt, but no matter how many games he plays this season, he would retain eligibility next season. That's because the NCAA is giving everyone an extra year of eligibility due to COVID-19. - Miami Herald

Miami Hurricanes senior offensive lineman Navaughn Donaldson announced on Wednesday he will redshirt the 2020 season. "After talking to family and the coaching staff I decided to redshirt and focus on me this season," Donaldson tweeted on Wednesday afternoon. Donaldson, who started 34 games his first three seasons with the Hurricanes, suffered a right knee injury in the regular-season finale at Duke last season.

He missed the Independence Bowl against Louisiana Tech, and was set to sit out UM's slate of spring practices before the coronavirus pandemic stopped all college athletic activities in March. Taking a redshirt season allows Donaldson to take his time recovering from the knee injury while retaining eligibility for a fifth season in 2021. Donaldson (6 foot 6, 345 pounds) started at left guard for the Hurricanes all junior season. Midseason, coaches began platooning John Campbell in with him to help keep Donaldson fresh. - Sun Sentinel
