  08/19/22 - Jayden DanielsrSr/2024, LSU + More +

Former Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels spoke with the media for the first time since transferring to Louisiana State in March and provided his thought process that brought on the decision to leave. "Decided to make the transfer, make the best decision for me and my future," he said Tuesday. "Just the opportunity that presented itself to come in and compete at the highest level against the best conference in college football, the SEC West. "To be able to go here, be able to be around the talent that matches where I'm trying to go and where I'm trying to be. So that's the reason why I chose to come here." Daniels was one of many Sun Devils to leave the program via the transfer portal amid an NCAA investigation that forced ASU to bring in 43 new players.

As the starting quarterback for the last three years, Daniels was certainly the most notable name to depart. The 21-year-old joins a Tigers squad that is currently in the midst of a quarterback competition. Alongside Daniels is redshirt freshman Garrett Nussmeier and five-star freshman Walker Howard. The group previously had four names involved before fifth-year senior Myles Brennan announced on Monday that he is stepping away from football. Brennan had been LSU's backup signal caller each of the last three years. Daniels said he has not been told he's the starter yet, while WWL's Kristain Garic reported with the Brennan news that Daniels is going to be the starter. Daniels called it one of the best quarterback rooms in the country and said everyone is ready to support each other no matter who the starter is. - Arizonasports.com

  08/17/22 - Jayden DanielsrSr/2024, LSU + More +

Did the ASU football team hold Jayden Daniels back? The QB's mother made some interesting comments about the LSU quarterback's former team. Jayden Daniels is expected by many to be the new starting quarterback for the LSU football team this season. But some fans of Daniels' previous team, Arizona State, evidently have some hard feelings for the QB and the way he suddenly departed Tempe for Baton Rouge after last season.

Daniels' mom, Regina Jackson, addressed those Sun Devil fans in a recent conversation on Twitter Spaces, while also appearing to slam the ASU football program. "We wish them well...we just had to let it go," Jackson said. "They feel some type of way and I understand. I'm a businesswoman and I understand. However, LSU probably gained a lot of Arizona State fans cause they just waited for him to fail and it's OK." Last season Daniels completed 197 of 301 passes for 2,381 yards with 10 touchdowns but had 10 interceptions after coming into the season having thrown only three in his first two years combined (17 games). He also ran for 710 yards and six touchdowns, highlighted by a 48-yard run in the Sun Devils' 38-15 Territorial Cup win over Arizona. - Arizona Republic

LSU redshirt freshman quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and Arizona State transfer Jayden Daniels shared reps with the first-team offense during practice Monday in the wake of Myles Brennan's departure. Nussmeier, who had been limited during Thursday's practice with a Grade 1 ankle sprain, returned fully to practice Monday, commanding the first-team offense through tempo drills and the no-contact scrimmage period.

Nussmeier and Daniels shared reps with the first team during the scrimmage portion of practice. Running backs Noah Cain, John Emery Jr., Armoni Goodwin and Josh Williams rotated with each quarterback for handoffs. Nussmeier appeared in four games last season as the backup quarterback to Max Johnson where he completed 29 of 57 passes for 329 yards, including two touchdowns. He had two interceptions. Nussmeier came to LSU as a four-star prospect out of Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas. His dad, Doug Nussmeier, is the quarterbacks coach for the Dallas Cowboys. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Garrett Dellinger has been tasked with learning a new position: center. The versatile lineman who played eight games at left tackle and two games at left guard has never played the position; not even in high school. "He's a guy that has a high football IQ," Kelly said. "He's physically gifted, and he's got a strong mindset that he wants to go in and do it. And so, today, I thought was a huge test - other than the time we got the downpour. We had one bad snap so continuity with the five is where we're needing to continue to grow, but we've got time to do it." The line has been consistent throughout camp with freshman Will Campbell at left tackle, fifth-year senior transfer (East Tennessee State) Tre'Mond Shorts at left guard, the sophomore Dellinger at center, redshirt sophomore Miles Frazier at right guard and redshirt junior Anthony Bradford at right tackle. Dellinger said he's gaining confidence in his ability to call out defensive fronts and blindly snap the ball. His main goal is learning how to play with the unit and fostering chemistry with his teammates on the line and with his quarterbacks. "After walkthroughs, I grab a quarterback and say, 'Let me get 20 snaps with you,' and just little things like that we do," Dellinger said. - Baton Rouge Advocate

For the first time since 2000, LSU did not crack The Associated Press' Top 25 preseason rankings. The Tigers received 55 votes, behind Tennessee (180), Texas (164), Iowa (163) and Penn State (160) among those who just missed out on the Top 25. Before today, LSU had been ranked in the preseason poll for 21 straight years. No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Georgia received first-place votes. Clemson was No. 4. Other Southeastern Conference teams in the Top 25 include Texas A&M (No. 6), Arkansas (No. 19), Kentucky (No. 20) and Ole Miss (No. 21). - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/17/22 - Myles BrennanrSr/2023, LSU + More +

Brennan considered transferring with one year left. He needed to play so he could prove himself to NFL evaluators. His father, Owen, said interest came from Florida State, Pittsburgh, Nebraska, Southern Miss, Tulane and Wisconsin. Hours before Brennan made his choice, Kelly called him one day in December. Kelly never guaranteed Brennan a spot, but he seemed likely to win the job because of his experience. Then LSU signed Daniels two months later. Brennan said the staff communicated well when it added another quarterback, telling him Daniels offered a chance to raise the level of competition at the position. The coaches wanted to let the best player win out.

Brennan understood. Whenever he talked, he expressed confidence in himself to win the battle, even after Nussmeier emerged as a viable option during spring practice and turned the competition into a three-man race. "I'm a fighter," Brennan said at the Manning Passing Academy this summer. "I like to compete. I want it to be hard. I want it to be a challenge. I know I have one year left, but my whole career has played out for this exact moment." Brennan didn't do anything wrong. He patiently waited. He pushed his body through pain. He tried to win the job again. But that moment never came. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/16/22 - *Jaquelin RoyJr/2023, LSU + More +

By most accounts out of preseason camp, Jaquelin Roy is poised for a breakout season in 2022. While he's made just one start in 22 career games, he's currently starting at nose tackle on a line that includes end Ali Gaye, big end Maason Smith and stand-up edge rusher BJ Ojulari, a preseason first-team All-Southeastern Conference pick. Despite playing for his third defensive line coach in three seasons, Roy feels more comfortable in a position that will have him playing mostly over the center instead of burly, squatty guards.

Roy added 15 pounds to his frame over the spring and summer to complete the move - which he was "sketchy" about initially, but couldn't be happier about now. "I don't know too many centers that are just going to block me one-on-one," he said. "When I was playing the three-technique (as a tackle), I struggled with taking the inside step before I got out vertically. "I'm in an even stance in the nose, so I can step right in and lift whatever the offensive lineman is doing. I can make a play fast. I can be a disturbance." Roy explained that in lining up over the center, he can use his quickness to cause the player to snap the ball over the quarterback's head, make a bad snap in general or even cause a false start. "That feels real good," he said. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/15/22 - Myles BrennanrSr/2023, LSU + More +

LSU quarterback Myles Brennan has decided to end his college football career after five seasons with the Tigers. The 23-year-old Brennan, who announced his decision on Monday, spent his first three years at LSU as a backup. He was named the starter in 2020, only to have that season cut short by an abdominal injury after three starts in which he passed for 1,112 yards and 11 touchdowns. Brennan then missed all of last season because of a non-football arm injury that occurred during a fishing outing at the end of August camp.

The former prized recruit out of St. Stanislaus High School in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, briefly entered the transfer portal last offseason before deciding to return to LSU in hopes of competing for a starting job once more. However, he fell out of the early running for that spot in recent days, behind redshirt freshman Garrett Nussmeier and Arizona State transfer Jaden Daniels. Brennan appeared in 20 career games for LSU, passing for 1,712 yards and 13 touchdowns. He appeared in eight games as Joe Burrow's backup during the Tigers' 2019, 15-0, national championship season - the winningest campaign in the 128-year history of the program. - AP College Football

  08/15/22 - Myles BrennanrSr/2023, LSU + More +

LSU quarterback Myles Brennan is walking away from football, the team confirmed in a statement Monday. The sixth-year senior was set to return this fall after missing all of 2021 with an off-field arm injury. Brennan had entered his name in the transfer portal last year before new coach Brian Kelly convinced him to return to LSU. In last week's scrimmage, Brennan took only second-team snaps while Arizona State transfer Jayden Daniels took first-team snaps. Sophomore Garrett Nussmeier missed the scrimmage because of an ankle sprain, but Kelly said he would've taken some first-team snaps. "We are grateful to Myles for everything he has done for LSU Football," Kelly said in a statement. "Myles is a great leader who has made a tremendous impact on this program, and he has earned the respect of everyone here through his commitment and love for LSU." - The Athletic

  08/14/22 - Jayden DanielsrSr/2024, LSU + More +

As Arizona State manages low expectations from outside the program, it's easy to forget the Sun Devils' place in the larger fabric of college football. The transfer portal took from Tempe more than it gave back, and that could very well have implications in the College Football Playoff for 2022. ESPN's Bill Connelly patched together his list of 25 players who will have the largest impact in the College Football Playoff race, and two former Sun Devils made the cut: LSU Tigers quarterback Jayden Daniels and USC Trojans linebacker Eric Gentry. Daniels came in ranked 25th on the list in a tier that Connelly calls "spoiler quarterbacks." The quarterback probably would be higher on the list if Daniels had already locked down the starting nod over returnee Myles Brennan and redshirt freshman Garrett Nussmeier.

Writes Connelly: Daniels is ungovernable. Among QBs with at least 375 dropbacks last season, his 15.1% rate of scrambles per dropback was comfortably the most, but he's good at it. He averaged 8.9 yards per carry on scrambles and produced a raw QBR of 85.5 when passing from outside the pocket. LSU probably isn't going to contend for the SEC West, but with the Tigers' overall athleticism and Daniels' unique improv skills, they could beat any single team on the schedule. If he wins the job. LSU coach Brian Kelly says QB Jayden Daniels has "not been tapped into". Daniels brings 723 passes of experience and a combined 32-13 touchdown-to-pick ratio, which got tanked by a 10-10 ratio last season. - Arizonasports.com

  08/12/22 - Noah CainrSr/2024, LSU + More +

Noah Cain, the Penn State transfer running back, traveled more than 1,200 miles to get to LSU. He has lived most of his life outside the state of Louisiana. But he never let any other state define him. "When I was in Texas, everybody was like, 'You a Texas kid,' and I'd always stop and correct them like, 'Get it straight: I'm from Louisiana,' " Cain said. To Cain, who moved to Denton, Texas, after Hurricane Katrina, Louisiana was family. It's where he spent every holiday and most of his summers. On his journey, every other stop - Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania - was just a detour on his way back home to play at his dream school: LSU.

His mom, Tonya, doesn't know what it is about this place. She said he probably should give Texas more credit, since he spent 10 years there. But everything about Louisiana ignited a special spark in him and when he was there. He would film his grandparents cooking gumbo, or himself going to an LSU football camp. And after a three-year career at Penn State, Cain saw an opportunity to finally return to his roots. "When he said, 'Coach Frank (Wilson) is at LSU, and I think it will be good for me,' I'm like, 'Well, Noah, you haven't steered us wrong at any age," Tonya said. "None of his decisions have steered him wrong, so we supported him fully." - Baton Rouge Advocate
