  03/10/23 - John Emery Jr.rSr/2024, LSU + More +

Senior running back John Emery was absent from LSU's first practice of the spring Thursday morning. Emery, a former five-star recruit from St. Rose, returned for his fifth season this year instead of entering the NFL draft. Coach Brian Kelly said Emery has to meet certain academic requirements before he can practice. Emery missed the entire 2021 season and the first two games last year because he was ruled academically ineligible, a decision the NCAA upheld after an appeal.

"John is focused strictly right now on his academics," Kelly said. "He's got some marks that he has to hit from an academic standpoint before we talk about football with him. That was the deal with John and talking to his family. If his primary focus was academics and taking care of his degree, then we would have a conversation about football." Emery wasn't the only running back missing from practice. Fifth-year graduate student Josh Williams and junior Armoni Goodwin did not appear during a 20-minute viewing period as they recover from injuries. Goodwin won't be able to practice until preseason camp. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  03/08/23 - Mason LunsfordrSr/2024, LSU + More +

Former Maryland offensive lineman Mason Lunsford signed with LSU, The Advocate has learned. He will enroll this summer, adding depth to the interior offensive line. Lunsford started for the last two years at Maryland before he entered the NCAA transfer portal. He signed with the Tigers after visiting campus last weekend. Lunsford has two years of eligibility.

LSU has been looking for an experienced offensive line transfer who can compete at center or guard. It missed out on Cincinnati center Jake Renfro and Miami center Jakai Clark before landing Lunsford. Lunsford signed with Maryland as a three-star recruit. He turned into a key player on the Terps' offensive line, starting 23 games over the last two seasons. Lunsford primarily played left guard. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  03/08/23 - Sage RyanrSo/2026, LSU + More +

Injuries limited Sage Ryan to four games with two starts as a freshman. Then last year, he became a rotational player who recorded 23 tackles, one pass breakup and two forced fumbles while appearing in every game behind nickel Jay Ward. That is a natural career progression for many, but Ryan was a five-star recruit. The label creates higher expectations.

The ideal step for Ryan would be to turn into a regular starter here in his third season. He has the opportunity after Ward's departure for the NFL created one of three openings in the secondary. But LSU could play one of its cornerbacks at nickel. If Ryan doesn't start there, LSU still needs him as the top backup to safeties Greg Brooks and Major Burns. - Baton Rouge Advocate

After joining the defensive line rotation as a redshirt freshman, Jacobian Guillory stayed there last year. He started twice, but he fell far behind the snap counts of starters Mekhi Wingo and Jaquelin Roy. Guillory finished with 14 tackles and one quarterback hurry. In his career, he has 23 tackles, two tackles for loss and a half-sack. This is a pivotal offseason for Guillory. On top of Wingo and Maason Smith, LSU signed West Virginia transfer Jordan Jefferson and Florida transfer Jalen Lee. They added depth, but there are available snaps this spring. Wingo (shoulder) and Smith (knee) are limited as they recover from injuries, giving Guillory and others the chance to assert themselves. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  03/07/23 - Maason SmithrSo/2024, LSU + More +

LSU football defensive lineman Maason Smith will be a non-contact participant during spring practices, coach Brian Kelly told ESPN on Monday. "Getting him back defensively will be a big, big plus for us," Kelly said. Smith tore his ACL during the first series of the year against Florida State on Sept. 3 while celebrating a tackle by a teammate. His absence left a defensive line already short on bodies even less deep, and LSU had to rely heavily on Missouri transfer Mekhi Wingo and Jaquelin Roy for the rest of the season.

As a freshman in 2021, Smith had 19 total tackles and four sacks in seven games. He was a five-star recruit in the 2021 class and the No. 20 player in the nation out of Terrebonne High School in Houma, according to the 247Sports Composite. Smith's pending return, combined with the additions of Jalen Lee (Florida), Jordan Jefferson (West Virginia) and Paris Shand (Arizona) from the transfer portal, should make the interior of the Tigers' defensive line much deeper in 2023. - Lafayette Daily Advertiser

LSU will begin spring football practice next week. The team announced Wednesday that practice starts March 9, and it culminates with the spring game April 22 inside Tiger Stadium. LSU said "details and the format" of the last day haven't been determined. Spring ball provides the first glimpse of a team with rising expectations for the second year under coach Brian Kelly. The Tigers likely will be ranked in the preseason top 10 after finishing 10-4 with a Southeastern Conference Western Division title last season. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  03/01/23 - Aaron AndersonrFr/2027, LSU + More +

LSU football wide receiver Aaron Anderson is expected to miss time this spring recovering from offseason knee surgery, according to On3 Sports. However, according to the report, Anderson is expected to be ready for the Tigers' season opener on Sept. 3 against Florida State. Anderson transferred to LSU from Alabama this offseason. He was the No. 1 recruit in Louisiana's 2022 class, according to 247Sports Composite, and attended Edna Karr in New Orleans.

Anderson was the only offensive addition among the 11 players the Tigers added in the transfer portal this winter. He joins a deep LSU wide receivers group that includes leading wideout Malik Nabers, Brian Thomas Jr., Chris Hilton Jr., Kyren Lacy and freshmen signees Shelton Sampson Jr., Kyle Parker, Khai Prean and Jalen Brown. - Montgomery Advertiser

  02/27/23 - Sevyn BanksrSr/2023, LSU + More +

Cornerback Sevyn Banks declared for the 2023 NFL Draft instead of returning to LSU, sources told The Advocate. Banks, a former Ohio State transfer, had one more season of eligibility. Banks transferred to LSU last spring after starting his career at Ohio State. He missed the first three games as he recovered from an injury, then Banks suffered a bruised spinal cord when he made a tackle on the opening kickoff Oct. 1 against Auburn. He did not play the rest of the season.

As a fifth-year senior, Banks did not have to formally submit his name for the draft by the Jan. 16 underclassmen deadline. He still made his decision around then, a source said. Though widely thought Banks had returned to LSU because he never made a public announcement, the team knew of his choice. Banks plans to participate in LSU's Pro Day next month, a source said. It'll be the first chance to see him work out since he was taken off the field on a stretcher after the kickoff at Auburn. He did not dress for another game as he recovered, and the former Ohio State starter is now trying to reach the NFL after two injury-marred seasons. Banks was a four-star recruit and the No. 221 overall player in the 2018 class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings, out of Jones High School in Orlando, Florida. He appeared in every game his sophomore year at Ohio State before turning into a starter with early-round draft potential. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  02/24/23 - Malik NabersJr/2024, LSU + More +

One day following his arrest in New Orleans for carrying an illegal weapon, LSU football player Malik Nabers won't face any charges, Orleans Parish Magistrate Court records indicate. Nabers, 19, was scheduled for a bond hearing Tuesday afternoon, but the state refused charges during the proceedings with the condition the defendant not get his gun returned to him. According to Louisiana law, a count for carrying an illegal weapon is categorized as a misdemeanor with a penalty up to a six-month sentence and a $500 fine. Nabers led the Tigers at the receiver position last season, posting 72 catches for 1,017 yards with three touchdowns. - Lafayette Daily Advertiser

  02/07/23 - Malik NabersJr/2024, LSU + More +

It's fair to look at the returning players and think LSU should have one of the best offenses in the Southeastern Conference next season. The Tigers brought back nine regular starters and added other playmakers to give them one of the most promising units in the league. LSU finished fourth in the SEC in scoring last season at 34.5 points per game, and the three highest-scoring teams - Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama - have to replace their quarterbacks.

Wide receiver Malik Nabers emerged as LSU's top offensive weapon in the Citrus Bowl with 163 yards receiving and one touchdown. He has strong hands in traffic, impressive body control and speed to stretch the defense downfield. As we saw in the bowl, Nabers can even throw on trick plays. After a 1,000-yard season, Kelly said "it's his opportunity now" to be the next great LSU wideout. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  02/07/23 - Jayden DanielsrSr/2024, LSU + More +

LSU football coach Brian Kelly took a risk last spring when he decided to bring in Arizona State quarterback transfer Jayden Daniels from the portal. The Tigers already had three scholarship quarterbacks: Myles Brennan, Garrett Nussmeier and Walker Howard. Brennan had SEC starting experience. Nussmeier had a talented arm and could start in 2023 with Brennan gone. Howard was a top-40 freshman signee who could eventually push Nussmeier. But in came Daniels anyway. "I think we started with just wanting to add more competition (to the room)," Kelly said before the start of last year's spring practices. In the end, the move paid off for Kelly. Daniels won the starting job and held it for the rest of 2022. He led LSU to a 10-win season, an SEC West championship and the Tigers' first home win over Alabama since 2010.

That success made the news of Daniels returning in 2023 an exciting one for most LSU fans. "I felt like I had unfinished business in college," Daniels said prior to LSU's Citrus Bowl win over Purdue. "So I wanted to come back and compete for a national championship." And Tiger fans should be excited; LSU has a Heisman Trophy candidate on its hands. Daniels, while playing under a new coaching staff, working behind a new offensive line and throwing to new weapons, was an above-average SEC quarterback in 2022. He threw for 2,913 yards, completed a career-best 68.6% of his passes and only threw three interceptions, seven fewer than in his final season at Arizona State. He was also one of the best running quarterbacks in college football. Daniels rushed for a career-high 885 yards and 11 touchdowns. He generated 4.52 yards after contact per rush attempt and forced 54 missed tackles, according to Pro Football Focus, leading all FBS quarterbacks with at least 70 rush attempts in both categories. - Lafayette Daily Advertiser

  01/23/23 - Omar SpeightsrSr/2024, LSU + More +

Oregon State inside linebacker Omar Speights is moving to the South as the rising fifth-year senior plans to transfer to LSU, according to multiple media reports. A first-team all-Pac-12 selection in 2022, Speights surprised people when he put his name in the transfer portal a week ago. Speights was thought to be deciding between returning to OSU in 2023 or heading to the NFL draft.

Speights, who played four years at Oregon State and didn't take a redshirt season, has one year of eligibility remaining. Speights led the Beavers with 83 tackles this past season. He was a three-time all-conference pick, and in 2019, landed on several freshman All-America teams. Speights had a decorated four-year career at Oregon State. He has 308 career tackles, which ranks No. 9 all-time at the school. Had Speights remained at OSU in 2023, he had a chance to become the school's all-time leading tackler. - The Oregonian

  01/17/23 - John Emery Jr.rSr/2024, LSU + More +

LSU football running back John Emery Jr. is coming back to LSU for the 2023 season, according to On3 Sports. Emery had until Monday's deadline to enter his name into the 2023 NFL Draft. After sitting out the entire 2021 season and the first two games of 2022 with an academic suspension, Emery had 370 rushing yards on 76 attempts. He averaged 3.21 yards after contact while splitting carries with Josh Williams, Armoni Goodwin and Noah Cain. Emery returns to an LSU offense that is bringing back most of its key contributors in 2023. Starting quarterback Jayden Daniels is returning, along with wideouts Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr., tight end Mason Taylor and five of LSU's top six contributors on the offensive line. - The Daily Advertiser

  01/13/23 - Ovie OghouforSr/2024, LSU + More +

Texas edge rusher Ovie Oghoufo transferred to LSU, the team announced Thursday. He played three years for coach Brian Kelly at Notre Dame before transferring to Texas. Oghoufo started 20 games over two years at Texas. He recorded 96 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 4½ sacks and six quarterback hurries. He has one year of eligibility and provided experienced depth at edge rusher.

LSU needed edge rushers. Starter BJ Ojulari declared for the NFL draft, and backups Desmond Little and Zavier Carter entered the transfer portal. The Tigers refilled the position with Oghoufo, Oregon transfer Bradyn Swinson, five-star freshman signee Da'Shawn Womack and four-star freshmen Jaxon Howard and Dylan Carpenter. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  01/11/23 - JK JohnsonrSo/2026, LSU + More +

Former Ohio State redshirt freshman cornerback JK Johnson is expected to transfer to LSU after visiting over the weekend. He was the fourth transfer cornerback to choose the Tigers as they restock a depleted position with young talent. Johnson played in every game and made five starts in 2022 after missing almost his entire freshman year with a shoulder injury. He recorded 20 tackles last fall, and his starts came in the middle of the season when senior Cameron Brown was recovering from a knee injury.

Johnson, the No. 50 overall recruit in the 2021 class according to the 247Sports Composite, has three years of eligibility. He updated his Twitter profile Sunday with a picture of him in a purple LSU jersey and "Ohio State - LSU" in the bio, which is expected to be the extent of his public announcement. The addition gave LSU another connection to De Smet Jesuit in St. Louis. The high school produced sophomore defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo, four-star tight end signee Mac Markway, cornerbacks coach Robert Steeples and Johnson. - Baton Rouge Advocate
