  09/17/22 - Jayden DanielsrSr/2024, LSU + More +

LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels accounted for more than 300 yards of offense, including one touchdown passing and one rushing, and the Tigers wiped out a 13-point deficit en route to a 31-16 victory over Mississippi State on Saturday night. Daniels completed 22 of 37 passes for 210 yards without an interception, and also rushed for 93 yards, mostly on scrambles that frustrated and wore down the Bulldogs. LSU (2-1, 1-0 SEC) outscored Mississippi State (2-1, 0-1) 21-0 in the fourth quarter and 31-3 during the game's final 31 minutes. Armoni Goodwin sealed it with his 47-yard touchdown run with 4:50 left.

The Tigers didn't take its first lead until early in the fourth quarter, when they cashed in on Austin Williams' muffed punt on his own 10. Daniels' spinning, tackle-slipping scramble up the middle on third and goal from the 3 made it 17-16 on what was also LSU's first third-down conversion of the game. The Tigers widened the margin with a 14-play, 85-yard touchdown drive that consumed six minutes. Daniels connected with Malik Nabers on three drive-sustaining passes - two on third down, followed by a surprise, 27-yard floater on fourth and 3. Josh Williams powered in from 7 yards out on the next play to make it 24-16. Nabers finished with six catches for 76 yards. LSU's defense initially looked like it might struggle with third-year Mississippi State coach Mike Leach's "Air Raid" offense. The Bulldogs drove 87 yards for a touchdown on their opening possession, capped by Jo'quavious Marks' 37-yard run. But the Tigers twice stopped MSU runs on fourth-and-short to keep the game close. - LSU/AP College Football

  09/17/22 - AJ SwannJr/2026, LSU + More +

Freshman quarterback AJ Swann threw four touchdown passes and Vanderbilt rallied to a 38-28 non-conference victory over Northern Illinois on Saturday. Swann, making his third appearance and first career start, engineered a comeback from a two-touchdown deficit as the Commodores (3-1) scored 24 unanswered points in the second half. He completed 18 of 28 passes for 255 yards and the four scores. Northern Illinois (1-2) suffered its second straight loss as starting quarterback Rocky Lombardi left the game in the second quarter with an unspecified injury.

Trailing by two touchdowns in the third quarter, Swann cut the margin to 28-21 with 6:44 left as he scrambled to find running back Ray Davis on fourth down for a 21-yard score. Vanderbilt then forced a 28-28 deadlock with Swann's 31-yard TD pass to Will Sheppard with 4:36 showing. Swann and Sheppard combined again on a 13-yard strike and a 35-28 lead with 1:11 left in the quarter. Kicker Joseph Bulovas made it 38-28 with his 35 yard field goal early in the fourth. Sheppard closed with 10 receptions for 171 yards. Vanderbilt improved to 5-0 all-time against Northern Illinois. - Vanderbilt/AP College Football

TRACKING TOP DRAFT PROSPECTS - WEEK 2: 19. Kayshon Boutte, Jr, WR, LSU, 6-0, 205, 1,...After a controversial season opener, Boutte got into a little more action in a 65-17 win over the Southern Jaguars with four catches for 42 yards. That's still less that we expect from this explosive receiver, although it was his 18th straight game with a catch. Previous week, No. 8: Whacked game ended with no time on clock as blocked PAT preserved Florida State's 24-23 victory. OK, this is about Boutte, whose contribution to this game was also whacked. At 3:58 left in third quarter his first contribution was to draw a pass interference that kept LSU's TD drive alive.

He finished with only two catches for 20 yards, had a couple of drops and seemed out of sync. He also spent an inordinate amount of time on the sidelines. Remember, flamboyant coach Brian Kelly called out Boutte a few weeks back, questioning his commitment. Last week Kelly said the receiver, ranked eighth overall at the time by NFL Draft Scout, "recommitted." Boutte was awarded LSU's coveted No. 7 jersey, ostensibly for the team's top player. In 16 career games through 2021 season, Boutte scored 14 touchdowns and had at least one reception in each, a streak that barely survived the opener. - Frank Cooney/NFL Draft Scout

LSU football defensive end BJ Ojulari, rated No. 54 overall by Draft Scout last week, is expected to return to the lineup against Mississippi State, coach Brian Kelly told reporters on Monday. Ojulari sat out Saturday's win over Southern due to a knee injury he suffered in the season opener against Florida State. The junior came out of the game briefly in the first quarter before returning and playing the rest of the game. - Lafayette Daily Advertiser

TRACKING TOP DRAFT PROSPECTS - WEEK 1: 8. Kayshon Boutte, Jr, WR, LSU, 6-0, 205,...Whacked game ended with no time on clock as blocked PAT preserved Florida State's 24-23 victory. LSU had recovered a fumble on its own one-yard line and drove 99 yards to score touchdown on two-yard pass with no time remaining. OK, this is about Boutte, whose contribution to this game was also whacked. At 3:58 left in third quarter his first contribution was to draw a pass interference that kept LSU's first TD drive alive. He finished with only two catches for 20 yards and had one drop on a play that was out of sync.

ESPN TOP 100 PRESEASON 2022 CFB PLAYERS (Selected Aug. 17): No. 11. Kayshon Boutte, WR, LSU, Junior. Notable 2021 stats: 509 yards, 9 TDs. Last year's ranking: NR. A season-ending injury against Kentucky last October cut short a nine-game run dating to Boutte's freshman season in which he scored in every game and racked up 13 touchdowns. While there was concern early on that he wouldn't mesh with new coach Brian Kelly, the decision to award Boutte the ceremonial No. 7 jersey in July signifies what's expected of arguably the most talented player on the roster. - ESPN.com

  08/29/22 - Ali GayerSr/2023, LSU + More +

With August coming to a close, Gaye is eager and ready to carry the momentum over to September and beyond as one of the leaders of the school's revamped football program. The 6-foot-6, 265-pound pass rusher is one of the keys to a defensive line that includes ends BJ Ojulari and Maason Smith and nose tackle Jaquelin Roy - a group that's received much attention in preseason camp as the team's strength on that side of the ball.

A combination of length, power and speed made Gaye the No. 2 junior college defensive end in 2019, displaying the same types of traits LSU's coaches have seen over and over this month - and hope to see even more of when the season begins. "No. 1 is his length, and he's a good speed and power rusher," first-year defensive coordinator Matt House said of Gaye, a second-day NFL draft pick in early projections. "He uses that elite length, along with speed, and generates so much power. "The force he generates on tackles is just different. From a mentality standpoint, the guy loves to be taught - and that's big." - Baton Rouge Advocate
