  11/20/22 - Jayden DanielsrSr/2024, LSU, 6-3, 210 (DS#2 QB) + More +

The hollering of exuberant LSU players penetrated the walls of their locker room and echoed in neighboring rooms and hallways beneath the north end zone stands in Tiger Stadium. The rowdy celebration was more about the energy and sense of purpose the sixth-ranked Tigers exhibited in a cold, wet, half-empty stadium against a heavy underdog than the mere fact that they won a game they were supposed to win. Noah Cain scored on three short runs, Jayden Daniels had touchdowns rushing and passing, and LSU methodically pulled away from UAB for a 41-10 victory Saturday night.

Daniels completed 22 of 29 passes for 297 yards and ran for 111 yards on 12 carries. His top target was receiver Malik Nabers, who caught seven passes for 129 yards, including a 47-yarder on LSU's first touchdown drive. Brian Thomas also had a late TD catch for LSU (9-2). The comfortable victory meant LSU could continue to climb in the The AP Top 25 Poll after No. 5 Tennessee's 63-38 loss at South Carolina - depending on whether the Tigers are leapfrogged by No. 7 USC, which won at rival UCLA 48-45. LSU is already locked into the Southeastern Conference championship game against No. 1 Georgia on Dec. 3. But the Tigers can't afford any more losses if they want to be taken seriously as candidate for the four-team College Football Playoff. - LSU/AP College Football

  11/12/22 - Harold Perkins Jr.rJr/2027, LSU, 6-1, 222 (DS#1 OLB) + More +

Josh Williams ran for 122 yards and a touchdown, Harold Perkins Jr. had four sacks and two forced fumbles and the defense for No. 7 LSU held Arkansas to 249 yards in its 13-10 win Saturday. The Tigers (8-2, 6-1 Southeastern Conference) forced and recovered an Arkansas fumble on the Razorbacks' final drive with 1:19 left to clinch the win. Arkansas (5-5, 2-4) attempted to rally in the fourth quarter behind third-string quarterback Cade Fortin. He entered in the third quarter to replace an ineffective Malik Hornsby and threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Matt Landers with 13:12 left to pull Arkansas within three.

Williams had scored LSU's only touchdown, a 1-yarder, late in the third quarter to give the Tigers a 10-point lead. LSU's offense otherwise struggled, with only one of its 13 series yielding more than 40 yards. Perkins, a freshman linebacker, stripped Fortin late in the game. The defense had eight tackles for loss and held Arkansas to 3.7 yards per play. Arkansas sacked LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels seven times, limiting the SEC's top rusher at the position to 10 yards on 19 carries. Daniels completed 8 of 15 passes for 86 yards and an interception. The Razorbacks were without their usual starting quarterback, KJ Jefferson, announcing minutes before kickoff that Jefferson would not play due to a shoulder injury. Fortin finished 8 of 13 for 92 yards with the score and the lost fumble. - LSU/AP College Football

  11/05/22 - Jayden DanielsrSr/2024, LSU, 6-3, 210 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Jayden Daniels ran for 25-yard touchdown in overtime and then found Mason Taylor for a do-or-die 2-point conversion, and 15th-ranked LSU defeated No. 6 Alabama 32-31 on Saturday night to give first-year Tigers coach Brian Kelly his first victory over Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban. The surprising victory in a riveting game that included six second-half lead changes and a tying field goal by Alabama in the 30 seconds also gave LSU (7-2, 5-1 Southeastern Conference) control of the SEC West Division with two league games remaining. Alabama (7-2, 4-2) began overtime with the ball and took a 31-24 lead on Roydell Williams' second touchdown of the game. But Daniels needed just one play in overtime to score and force a decision by Kelly to try to tie it with a kick or let Daniels try to win it. "I just love the way our guys competed. I didn't want to keep going in overtime," Kelly said as jubilant fans stormed onto the field. "It just felt like it was the right time to try to win the game." Alabama, favored by nearly two-TDs, lost in Tiger Stadium for the first time since 2010. Kelly, who as Notre Dame's coach lost to Saban and Alabama twice in college football's postseason, became the coach to break that streak in the first year of a 10-year contract worth nearly $100 million.

Kelly, who as Notre Dame's coach lost to Saban and Alabama twice in college football's postseason, became the coach to break that streak in the first year of a 10-year contract worth nearly $100 million. "To come here and restore the pride and tradition of this program just means so much," Kelly said. "It just feels so good to return the faith and trust that they've given to me." Daniels passed for 182 yards and two touchdowns, and also ran for 95 yards and a score. Alabama's Bryce Young passed for 328 yards and one touchdown, and also was intercepted. There were three lead changes in the final 4:44, starting when Young narrowly escaped a sack, rolled right and found Ja'Corey Brooks for a 41-yard touchdown. LSU went back in front 24-21 with 1:47 left in regulation when Daniels hit Taylor in the back of the end zone for a 7-yard score. But Young drove Alabama to the LSU 28 and Will Reichard's 46-yard field goal with 21 seconds left tied it. - LSU/AP College Football

With LSU idle this week and the Alabama game looming next on the schedule, coach Brian Kelly updated the status of three key players Wednesday during the Southeastern Coaches teleconference. Kelly said sophomore safety Major Burns will be cleared for contact next Monday and is in the game plan for Alabama. Burns, who has been praised for his communication, started the first three games before suffering an upper neck injury. Burns hasn't played since Sept. 17 against Mississippi State. In the meantime, LSU started Arkansas transfers Greg Brooks and Joe Foucha at safety. It also moved cornerback Jarrick Bernard-Converse there for a couple games. "We're excited about that for Major," Kelly said. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  10/23/22 - Jayden DanielsrSr/2024, LSU, 6-3, 210 (DS#2 QB) + More +

LSU re-entered The Associated Press College Football poll at No. 18 on Sunday and No. 25 South Carolina earned a ranking for the first time in four seasons. The first six teams in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank held their spots after either winning and not playing this past weekend. Georgia is No. 1 for the third straight week, with No. 2 Ohio State gaining ground after it blew out Iowa. The Bulldogs, who were idle, received 31 first-place votes and 1,530 points, and the Buckeyes got 18 first-place votes and 1,513 points. No. 3 Tennessee received 13 first-place votes. No. 4 Michigan, No. 5 Clemson and No. 6 Alabama also held their spots, with the Tigers receiving a first-place vote.

No. 7 TCU moved up a spot after remaining unbeaten with a second-half comeback against Kansas State. Oregon jumped two spots to a season-high No. 8 after routing UCLA. Oklahoma State is No. 9, followed by Southern California and Wake Forest in a tie at No. 10. LSU, in its first season under coach Brian Kelly, handed Mississippi its first loss of the season in emphatic fashion and moved back into the rankings ahead of its game against Alabama on Nov. 5 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The Tigers were ranked for a week earlier this month before losing to Tennessee. They improved to 6-2 by outscoring Ole Miss 42-3 after falling behind by 14 in the first half. South Carolina, under second-year coach Shane Beamer, is ranked for the first time since a one-week stint after the opening weekend of the 2018 season. The Gamecocks beat Texas A&M to improve to 5-2. They have not been ranked this late in a season since 2013. - AP College Football

  10/22/22 - Jayden DanielsrSr/2024, LSU, 6-3, 210 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Jayden Daniels ran for three touchdowns and passed for two scores, and LSU roared back from an early two-touchdown deficit to hand No. 7 Mississippi its first loss this season, 45-20 on Saturday. The performance gave the dynamic Daniels the LSU record for touchdowns rushing in a season by a quarterback with nine. Daniels also has accounted for 11 TDs rushing or passing combined in the span of two games. He had three of each in a 45-35 victory at Florida last weekend. Reveling in the resounding triumph over a historical and highly-ranked rival, LSU fans stormed the field as the game ended. Now LSU (6-2, 4-1 SEC) is back in the race to win the SEC West - if the Tigers can beat No. 6 Alabama. After being outgained 200-80 in the first quarter and falling behind 17-3 on Jonathan Cruz's field goal to start the second quarter, LSU outscored Ole Miss (7-1, 3-1) 41-3 the remainder of the game. The Tigers finished with 500 total yards to 404 for coach Lane Kiffin's vaunted Mississippi offense.

Daniels passed for 258 yards and ran for 121 without a turnover. His scoring passes went for 34 yards to Jaray Jenkins and 1 yard to tight end Mason Taylor. He ran for touchdowns of 3, 11 and 17 yards, the longest all but salting the game away in the fourth quarter. Josh Williams ran 1 yard for the Tigers' final TD late in the fourth quarter. Nearly everything went right for LSU in the second half. Even linebacker Harold Perkins Jr.'s unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after a third-down stop at the Rebels' 15-yard line early in the fourth quarter couldn't turn the tide in the Rebels' favor. Down 11 points at the time, Ole Miss wound up having to punt anyway minutes later. Daniels then drove the Tigers 75 yards for a touchdown to make it 38-20. After first-quarter touchdown runs of 3 and 6 yards by Judkins, Ole Miss was threatening to go ahead 21-3 when LSU's defense finally got a stop on third-and-5 from the LSU 13, limiting the Rebels to a field goal. - LSU/AP College Football
