  08/12/22 - Jyaire BrownJr/2026, LSU + More +

Jyaire Brown was the first member of Ohio State football's 2022 recruiting class and now, he's "officially a Buckeye." The cornerback became the first true freshman to lose his black stripe in fall camp, joining linebacker Chip Trayanum as the first players to do so in the preseason. Overall, five players have done so, with nickel Tanner McCalister, safety Kye Stokes and defensive lineman Caden Curry losing the stripe in the spring. Brown was the nation's No. 192 player and No. 24 cornerback spending most of his life in New Orleans before coming back to Ohio for his final two years of high school football. He joins a room that's already short on depth with just six scholarship players, with Brown and Ryan Turner being true freshmen. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  08/11/22 - *BJ OjulariJr/2023, LSU + More +

LSU junior edge rusher BJ Ojulari was awarded the coveted No. 18 jersey last week for his leadership on the team. The tradition started after the 2003 season when quarterback Matt Mauck led the Tigers to their second national championship. He passed his number on to running back Jacob Hester, who led the Tigers to their 2007 national championship. "All the 18s put us in a group chat and they were congratulating me," Ojulari said. "It was great just for all of them to embrace me and welcome me into that brotherhood." Ojulari said that the most recent No. 18, Damone Clark, was the first to congratulate him. Both Clark and punter Avery Atkins wore the number last season. "Just being a younger guy looking up to him, especially last year, he was outstanding," Ojulari said. Clark led the Southeastern Conference and was No. 2 nationally with 135 tackles last year. Ojulari led the defensive line as a sophomore in both tackles (55) and sacks (7) last year. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/11/22 - Tremond ShortsrSr/2023, LSU + More +

Five days into preseason camp, LSU continued to tinker Monday morning with the offensive line as it tries to find at least four new starters. Near the beginning of a 30-minute viewing period, LSU used a combination of left tackle Will Campbell, left guard Tre'Mond Shorts, center Garrett Dellinger, right guard Miles Frazier and right tackle Anthony Bradford. This was different from the first day of practice, when LSU started out with redshirt junior Charles Turner at center, redshirt junior Kardell Thomas at right guard and senior Cameron Wire at right tackle during a drill with the full offense.

Campbell and Shorts were the only players to appear on the first-team offensive line during two brief open sessions. LSU's other three practices have been closed. "It's in flux," offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock said. "We're still in the identification phase of, 'Who are the best five guys actually going to be?" LSU expected the process to take a couple weeks. Offensive line coach Brad Davis cross-trains players at multiple positions to create more options, and he needs time to properly evaluate everyone with so many openings, especially after multiple potential starters missed spring practice. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/11/22 - Ali GayerSr/2023, LSU + More +

For the first time since 2000, LSU was not ranked in the USA Today sports AFCA football preseason coaches poll. The poll, which uses a panel of 65 head coaches from Football Bowl Subdivision schools, had Alabama ranked No. 1 in the country. The Crimson Tide were followed by Ohio State, Georgia, Clemson and Notre Dame. LSU received votes for the poll, but after going 11-12 over the last two years, the Tigers missed the top 25 ahead of their first season under head coach Brian Kelly. The last time LSU didn't appear on the preseason coaches poll was former head coach Nick Saban's first year. LSU finished 8-4, a quick turnaround after going 3-8 and firing head coach Gerry DiNardo the year before. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/10/22 - *BJ OjulariJr/2023, LSU + More +

When asked this week whether or not he would continue the No. 18 jersey tradition, Brian Kelly teased an announcement. "We're going to award it to a deserving player," Kelly said. "We're just not going to do that today. But it's coming. Stay tuned." The reveal came Saturday after practice. LSU gave the number, which goes to a high-character leader on the team, to junior edge rusher BJ Ojulari. Ojulari, a preseason All-Southeastern Conference selection, represented the LSU at SEC media days and is expected to have a productive season.

Last year, Ojulari made 55 tackles and 11½ tackles for loss while leading the team with seven sacks. He'll play more out of a two-point stance in new defensive coordinator Matt House's scheme, but he will still primarily rush the passer. "I appreciate all y'all," Ojulari said after receiving the jersey. "All my teammates, training staff, coaches, media personnel. Being able to wear 18 and leave my legacy at LSU is the biggest for me this season." - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/10/22 - *Kayshon BoutteJr/2023, LSU + More +

Kayshon Boutte thought about leaving LSU. He really did. When rumors floated around about the possibility in December, the star wide receiver was wondering if he should transfer to another school. It never reached the point where Boutte entered the transfer portal, but consider the circumstances. Everything around him was changing while he recovered from the first major injury of his career. Different coaches. Different teammates. Different staff members. The people who convinced him to pick LSU in the first place were gone. Should he leave, too? "Coming out of high school, I felt like the people who recruited me was the people who had the most trust and belief in me," Boutte said. "I felt like being under a new staff, it was all kind of weird playing for people I never really met. I didn't really know any of them personally. I felt like I didn't fit."

Boutte wanted to know the people around him, and he barely recognized any of the faces in the building. Coming off a season-ending ankle injury in October, his professional future hinged on this junior season. He needed to trust the coaches responsible for developing him. "I thought about it," Boutte said. "I really did. There was a lot going on." Ultimately, Boutte stayed. He got more comfortable with head coach Brian Kelly. He decided he should "overcome this process." And it helped that local personal injury attorney Gordon McKernan signed him to a name, image and likeness deal. On Dec. 29, 2021, Boutte posted on Twitter: "Ignore the rumors...I'm locked in." - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/02/22 - Sevyn BanksrSr/2023, LSU + More +

At 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds, Banks was a two-year starter at Ohio State, starting in eight games and recording eight pass breakups as a junior. He was a third-team preseason All-American in 2021 and made the Thorpe Award and Bronko Nagurski Trophy preseason watch lists. But he arrives at LSU after dealing with injuries. A knee injury hampered him during the preseason and made him miss the first two games in 2021. He sat out the final three contests because of a hip injury. Given the state of LSU's depth chart at cornerback, keeping Banks healthy will be important. Coach Brian Kelly is confident that will be the case. "We got a positive medical report from our doctors," Kelly told reporters in April. - Lafayette Daily Advertiser
