Noah Cain, the Penn State transfer running back, traveled more than 1,200 miles to get to LSU. He has lived most of his life outside the state of Louisiana. But he never let any other state define him. "When I was in Texas, everybody was like, 'You a Tex as kid,' and I'd always stop and correct them like, 'Get it straight: I'm from Louisiana,' " Cain said. To Cain, who moved to Denton, Texas, after Hurricane Katrina, Louisiana was family. It's where he spent every holiday and most of his summers. On his journey, every other stop - Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania - was just a detour on his way back home to play at his dream school: LSU.His mom, Tonya, doesn't know what it is about this place. She said he probably should give Texas more credit, since he spent 10 years there. But everything about Louisiana ignited a special spark in him and when he was there. He would film his grandparents cooking gumbo, or himself going to an LSU football camp. And after a three-year career at Penn State, Cain saw an opportunity to finally return to his roots. "When he said, 'Coach Frank (Wilson) is at LSU, and I think it will be good for me,' I'm like, 'Well, Noah, you haven't steered us wrong at any age," Tonya said. When Penn State hired Mike Yurcich to be its new offensive coordinator, the team's backs and receivers were ecstatic. They knew there likely would be a lot of opportunities for all of them to make plays. The No. 11 Nittany Lions' 44-13 win against Ball S tate on Saturday was the showcase they had in mind. Sean Clifford completed 21 of 29 passes for 230 yards, ran for a touchdown and threw for another on an afternoon that saw seven different players contribute scoring plays and 14 more touch the ball for an offense that rang up 493 total yards. "That's going to be a common theme," Clifford said with a grin. "The more guys that get touches the better, especially early in the year." Running back Noah Cain added a rushing touchdown and wide receiver Jahan D otson added another, linebacker Jesse Luketa returned an interception 16 yards for a touchdown, and Jordan Stout kicked three field goals for the Nittany Lions (2-0).Backup quarterback Ta-Quan Roberson added a 23-yard touchdown pass to Theo Johnso n to cap Penn State's sixth straight win dating to last season. "I just thought this week on first and second down, offensively we were more effective," Penn State coach James Franklin said. "I just thought we were more balanced. We were more efficient." Penn State scored on four of five first-half possessions, led 24-6 at halftime, and played suffocating defense. Running back is regarded as one of the deepest positions on the Penn State roster entering the 2021 season, and that depth is reflected by the watch list for the award that is given annually to the nation's top running back. Three Nittany Lions running b acks - junior Noah Cain, sophomore Keyvone Lee and senior John Lovett - were listed among the 2021 Doak Walker Award candidates, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced Wednesday morning. Penn State enters the 2021 season with a unique backfield situation. All five running backs - junior Devyn Ford and sophomore Caziah Holmes round out the group - have game experience, and given how the Nittany Lions have dealt with injuries at the position, any of the five could end the season as the team's leading rusher . - Tribune Review

Penn State running back Noah Cain will miss the rest of the season with an injury, another blow to the the 18th-ranked Nittany Lions' backfield as they prepare to face No. 3 Ohio State. Penn State coach James Franklin declined to give specifics of Cain's injury, but the sophomore left Saturday's overtime loss to Indiana early and reportedly was seen on the sideline later with a walking boot on his left leg. The loss of Cain, who ran for 443 yards and eight touchdowns last year, comes about a week after Penn State announced its leading rusher from last season, Journey Brown, could miss this entire season with an unspecified medical condition. With Brown out, Cain was expected to take on a larger role. He had one carry for 3 yards in the season opener ag ainst Indiana. Sophomore Devyn Ford ended up being Penn State's lead back against the Hoosiers, carrying 20 times for 69 yards and a touchdown. Ford scored the touchdown Indiana conceded when it was trying to get the ball back in the final two minutes of regulation. - AP College Football

In 10 games last season, Cain rushed for 443 yards on 84 attempts with eight touchdowns. He also had seven receptions for 52 yards. Ford appeared in 12 games and had 294 rushing yards on 52 attempts with three touchdowns. He also contributed five recepti ons for 30 yards. "Obviously, I think (running back coach Ja'Juan Seider) has done a really good job of not only recruiting but also developing at that position," Franklin said. "There's an identity and a mentality at that position...We've got a number o f guys there whether you're talking about Devyn or whether you talking about, obviously, Noah Cain (who) did so many significant things for us last year." Further down the depth chart are Caziah Holmes and Keyvone Lee. "Then two guys that we're really ex cited about behind those guys with Caziah and Keyvone. I feel like we've got a really good group there," Franklin said. "Obviously, Keyvone and Caziah haven't done it in a collegiate setting yet. Replacing Brown won't be easy, and it appears it will take a committee to do so. "But we do feel like Noah has the ability to carry the load and feel like Devyn has a chance to do that as well," Franklin said. "We'll see how close those two young guys are ready to play based on how they prepared this week. But you'd love to get them in the game and see how they'll do in that setting. Noah Cain made it a point as a true freshman last year to prove to his coaches that he was mentally mature. Then, during the offseason, his body physically matured. The combination could contribute to a breakout 2020 for a player who showed plenty of pro mise in limited action in his first college playing time. Cain is 15-20 pounds heavier than the 205-208 he was last year, the 5-foot-10 running back said during a video conference call with media Tuesday. "As time went on, I kind of got rid of some baby fat and became more and more lean," said Cain, who was a four-star recruit from Baton Rougue, La. "And this offseason, I was actually surprised (to gain mass). I was eating right and everything, and as weeks went on I kept gaining three or four pounds he re and there. "At first I don't want the (added) weight, but it was natural weight. My body maturing, I guess, and come March I noticed I was 223. That's a big jump from what I was at last season. And as time went on, my body started to adjust to it. I'm excited with what I am at right now. I can't wait to get on the field. I feel more explosive and lean right now than I have ever been." - Tribune Review
