Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa had a surprise for his mother on Mother's Day. The former Alabama All-American gave Diane Tagovailoa a Cadillac Escalade on Sunday. Tua Tagovailoa shared the gift presentation on his Instagram account on Sunday night. The fifth player selected in the NFL Draft on April 23, Tagovailoa is in line for a four-year, $30.275 million contract that will include a signing bonus of around $19.6 million. Tagovailoa headed for the NFL as Alabama's all-time leader in touchdown passes and the holder of the NCAA FBS record for career passing-efficiency rating at 199.4. Tagovailoa completed 474-of-684 passes for 7,442 yards with 87 touchdowns and 11 interceptions and ran for 340 yards and nine touchdowns on 107 carries in three seasons with the Crimson Tide. - Birmingham News

Alabama athletics director Greg Byrne said during a virtual town hall Thursday night that a decision about whether there will be changes to the upcoming football season will have to be made within the next two months. "I think when we get into late June and the first week of July, we're gonna have to make some decisions," Byrne told a group of ticket-holders and donors. "Coach Saban and I have had a number of discussions about it: what do we need for the safety of our kids to be able to come back and be ready, be football ready at the SEC level? "That's four at the very minimum but very likely six weeks of preparation to get ready. And so how you pull that all together when that to comes mid-July to late-July, we're gonna have to have some decisions made on what that looks like."

Alabama would typically open fall camp around Aug. 1, with its season opener scheduled for Sept. 5 in Dallas against USC, although Saban has proposed a non-contact teaching period ahead of the start of fall camp that would presumably take place in late July. The Tide opens its home schedule Sept. 12 and Byrne said the school continues to plan for a full fall sports schedule that includes Bryant-Denny Stadium at full capacity. "Are we looking at different options on what could potentially take place? Yes, we are," Byrne said. "We're not necessarily broadcasting what those are." - Birmingham News

  05/06/20 - *Tua TagovailoaJr/2020, Alabama, 6-0, 217 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa will wear No. 1 for the Miami Dolphins. The fifth player picked in the 2020 NFL Draft on April 23, Tagovailoa wore No. 13 while playing at Alabama. He also wore that number while playing for Saint Louis School in Honolulu. But Tagovailoa couldn't wear No. 13 for Miami. The Dolphins retired that jersey number to honor quarterback Dan Marino. Marino played for Miami from 1983 through 1999 and retired as the NFL's career leader in passing yards and touchdown passes. Marino entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2005 in his first year of eligibility.

Marino's 13 is one of three numbers retired by the Dolphins. The others are the No. 12 of quarterback Bob Griese and the No. 39 of running back Larry Csonka. Tagovailoa revealed his new number via his Instagram account on Tuesday night. Fanatics is already selling the Tagovailoa No. 1 jersey for $99 with free shipping available. Eight Miami players have worn No. 1, the most notable being place-kicker Garo Yepremian, who had that jersey for the Dolphins from 1970 through 1978. Former Auburn kicker Cody Parkey wore No. 1 during his single season with Miami in 2017. - Birmingham News

The Las Vegas Raiders have straight-from-the-factory parts to follow the Alabama blueprint for offensive success. The Raiders used a first-round draft choice on Alabama running back Josh Jacobs last year, and he became the first rookie in franchise history with 1,000 rushing yards in the 2019 season. Las Vegas used another first-round draft choice on Alabama wide receiver Henry Ruggs III on Thursday night, and the fastest player at this year's NFL Scouting Combine could be the key to even more success for Jacobs in 2020. "I think having balance on offense is always really important," Alabama coach Nick Saban told the Raiders' official website, "and I know that's something that the Raiders probably believe in and how (coach) Jon (Gruden)'s trying to build his program.

"You know, all the great running backs we had here, we always had a great receiver that sort of went with them. When Julio Jones was here, Mark Ingram was the tailback, and you can go through the years and just try to map that out, and it always works that way. And I think they complement one another because if you really want to stop the run you want to put an extra guy in the box all the time, so you've got to play single-high coverage, which leaves one-on-one coverage outside. If you want to stop outside people, you want to play more split-safety coverages, which now you don't have an extra guy in the box, so it's easier to run the ball. I think having guys like that to complement one another is probably the beginning of really developing a very effective offense." - Birmingham News

The Miami Dolphins kept their intention to draft quarterback Tua Tagovailoa hidden up until the former Alabama quarterback was selected with the fifth overall pick last week. Various reports in the weeks and months leading into the draft questioned whether the Dolphins were sold on Tagovailoa, and even Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn -- whose team picked No. 3 -- was not sure what the Dolphins would do. Through it all, Alabama coach Nick Saban was optimistic that Miami would make Tagovailoa the highest NFL-drafted quarterback for the Tide since 1948. "Based on the calls that I get and information that I get," Saban said in a video conference with South Florida media Thursday, according to the Palm Beach Post, "I was really, really hopeful that Miami would take him."

Saban, though, was not completely confident in that actually happening. "I think he will be a great face of the organization there," Saban said. "I was just rooting for the guy. I felt so bad about him getting injured. Would those consequences of that injury affect his draft status dramatically? Probably as anxious as I ever was about a player getting drafted." Saban had been in contact with Dolphins general manager Chris Grier, who served as a national college scout while Saban was Miami's head coach in 2005 and 2006. - Birmingham News

When the Miami Dolphins selected Tua Tagovailoa with the fifth overall pick in last week's NFL Draft, it guaranteed the Hawaiian left-hander millions of dollars. But what if Tagovailoa could have made millions while staying for another season at Alabama? If the recent NCAA-endorsed plan for name, image and likeness was in place and allowed Tagovailoa to be paid to star in commercials, he could have according to those most bullish about the market for college athletes. Tagovailoa would have been well suited to cash in on his national recognition and ability to tap into multiple markets given his Hawaiian roots. Bob Dorfman, creative director of Baker Street Advertising, says Tagovailoa could have made "three to five million, easy" during his time at Alabama. Andy Schwarz, an economist and partner at OSKR, believes "low millions" would have been possible for Tagovailoa though six figures was probably more likely early on.

In talking to multiple sports marketing experts, a consensus emerges that it is players like Tagovailoa and Clemson star quarterback Trevor Lawrence who stand to gain the most if the boldest aspects of the NCAA's proposed NIL plan come to fruition. (There is a lot of skepticism that they will, which we'll get to later.) Similar to the NFL where quarterbacks like Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers reap the biggest endorsement deals, it will likely be the high-profile quarterbacks and Heisman contenders who brands will want to embrace. In theory, brands will be allowed to pay athletes to promote their products on social media platforms, appear in television commercials and attend events, among other options. - Birmingham News

  05/01/20 - Anfernee JenningsrSr/2020, Alabama, 6-2, 256 (DS#9 OLB) + More +

It's almost as though the New England Patriots were supposed to pick Alabama outside linebacker Anfernee Jennings in the 2020 NFL Draft. And they did, adding the former Dadeville High School star with the 87th pick in the 85th draft. Jennings said former Alabama and NFL safety Vinnie Sunseri predicted in February he'd be drafted by the Patriots. A graduate assistant at Alabama last season, Sunseri is a member of the New England support staff now. "He was the analyst for a couple years here and someone I could really reach out to and have conversations with," Jennings said.

"He got to the job to New England earlier this year, and he told me, actually right before we started the (NFL Scouting) Combine and stuff like that, that I was going to be a Patriot. With that being said, I just went about the process and now I'm here and I'm a Patriot, so it's kind of funny." One of the leaders of the New England defense is linebacker Dont'a Hightower, a 2019 Pro Bowler who was an All-American for Alabama in 2011. "I know quite a bit about him," Jennings said. "After I was drafted, he reached out to me, and we texted for a little bit and got on the same page. Ready to get to it and follow the ropes and just work hard." - Birmingham News

  04/30/20 - Raekwon DavisSr/2020, Alabama, 6-6, 311 (DS#9 DT) + More +

Alabama defensive lineman Raekwon Davis had just been selected in the second round of the NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins, and reporters wanted to talk to him - about Tua Tagovailoa. Miami had used the fifth pick of the draft on Thursday night to obtain the Alabama quarterback. But even in his big moment, Davis didn't seem to mind sharing the spotlight with his former and future teammate. "It's the best thing you can ever think of," Davis said. "When nobody thinks you're going to be playing another couple of years with your quarterback, it's a blessing."

The Dolphins selected Davis on Friday night with the 56th pick, the fifth of 20 players listed as defensive tackles who were drafted this year. Miami wasn't dissuaded by the decline in Davis' statistics in his final two seasons at Alabama. Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said Davis had the qualities that Miami looks for in a defensive tackle: "He's big, physical. He's tough. He stops the run." "We're really happy to get him, and we didn't have any qualms about him," Grier said. "I know Brian (Flores) and the coaching staff and the scouting staff were really excited. We had him rated as a high-rated player for us." - Birmingham News

If the Miami Dolphins hadn't selected Tua Tagovailoa in the NFL draft last week, a different organization was set to take the former Alabama star quarterback one pick later. Los Angeles Chargers general manager Tom Telesco confirmed on the Pat McAfee show that the Chargers would have selected Tagovailoa with pick No. 6 had the Dolphins instead opted for Oregon QB Justin Herbert with selection No. 5. With Tagovailoa gone, the Chargers drafted Herbert. "We felt great about both guys," Telesco said during the interview. "Actually, we felt great about all three quarterbacks that went in the top six.

All three are going to be really good players in this league. Hopefully we don't pick sixth very often - if we do, I won't be making very many picks here - so if you're going to pick this high and there's a potential down the road franchise quarterback there that you like, you have to take him. And we were lucky to have some quarterbacks there in this draft that were really good players." Telesco had heard all of the rumors about the Dolphins and that No. 5 pick leading up to the draft - the combination of the talk about the team preferring Herbert over Tagovailoa and the reports the day before the draft about Miami being interested in trading up for an offensive tackle instead of taking a quarterback. Ultimately though, the Dolphins ended up selecting Tagovailoa, leaving Herbert there for the Chargers to take with pick No. 6. - Birmingham News

The New York Giants selected former Alabama safety Xavier McKinney with the No. 36 overall pick in the 2020 draft. McKinney, who was ESPN's 17th-ranked and top-available player entering the second round Friday night, is the first safety drafted. He becomes the fifth Tide player taken in the first 36 picks of the draft. He will play for the Giants, who hired former Alabama special teams assistant Joe Judge this offseason as their head coach. Judge spent three seasons (2009-11) on Nick Saban's staff in Tuscaloosa. McKinney, a former four-star prospect from Georgia, started the past two seasons at safety for Alabama. - Birmingham News

  04/25/20 - Trevon DiggsSr/2020, Alabama, 6-1, 205 (DS#4 CB) + More +

Trevon Diggs got the call and is joining his big brother in the NFL. The former Alabama cornerback was selected with the 51st pick of the second round Friday. Younger brother was picked considerably earlier than star NFL receiver Stefon Diggs, the No. 146 overall pick in the fifth round of the 2015 draft. Trevon Diggs was the sixth Alabama player taken in the 2020 draft. He joins Tua Tagovailoa, Jedrick Wills, Henry Ruggs, Jerry Jeudy and Xavier McKinney. Diggs is the 10th Alabama cornerback drafted in the Nick Saban era and the first since Anthony Averett in 2018. The Maryland product was on pace for a possible early NFL exit as a junior before breaking his foot midseason at Arkansas. He opted to return for his senior season in 2019 when he earned a few second- and third-team All-American honors. - Birmingham News

Tua Tagovailoa won't be the Miami Dolphins' only rookie from Alabama. The Dolphins selected defensive lineman Raekwon Davis late in the second round of the NFL draft Friday night. Miami took the second-team All-SEC selection with the No. 56 overall pick in the draft. While Davis' production dipped off over the last two seasons after posting 69 tackles and 8.5 sacks as a sophomore in 2017 and while he only had 3.5 tackles for a loss and 0.5 sacks as a senior last year, he was still ultimately a top two round draft pick. - Birmingham News

  04/25/20 - Terrell LewisrJr/2020, Alabama, 6-5, 262 (DS#4 DE) + More +

Terrell Lewis' long path to the NFL finally ended in the third round. The former Alabama outside linebacker was selected by Los Angeles Rams with the 84th pick of the NFL draft. He is the eighth Alabama player taken in the 2020 draft that began Thursday. The Washington D.C. product missed a significant amount of time in his Alabama career. An arm injury in the 2017 opener against Florida State sidelined him 10 games before returning for the postseason run. He made a sack in overtime of the national title game win over Georgia, putting him in position for a big 2018 fall. A torn ACL suffered before that season sidelined him until 2019. - Birmingham News

The New England Patriots selected Alabama linebacker Anfernee Jennings with the No. 87 pick in the 2020 NFL draft. Jennings was the fifth Tide defender drafted Friday night, when the league held the second and third rounds of its draft. Four Alabama offensive players were taken in the first round Thursday. The selection was likely facilitated in part by the well-known relationship between Alabama coach Nick Saban and Patriots coach Bill Belichick, who also drafted former Alabama linebacker Dont'a Hightower in 2012. Jennings, one of four permanent team captains from last season's team, was a first-team All-SEC selection in 2019 by both coaches and the Associated Press. The Dadeville native spent five seasons in Tuscaloosa, playing in 54 games and finishing his career with 15.5 sacks. - Birmingham News

  04/24/20 - Henry Too TooSr/2023, Alabama, 6-1, 227 (DS#3 ILB) + More +

Tennessee football linebacker Henry To'o To'o has a dream career in mind. It doesn't have anything to do with the sport that he plays. The first guest on "The Slice," a new podcast hosted by VFL Films' Kasey Funderburg that will feature different players from the football program, To'o To'o revealed that, without football, he would want to be a musician. There's just one hurdle he'd have to clear: He can't sing. "I want to be a musician, I want to be a singer," To'o To'o said. "But I can't sing. That's a dream of mine, I want to be able to sing and play piano and play guitar."

To'o To'o said that a lot of his family, both on his mom's and dad's side, can sing well, and at family gatherings he tends to feel left out. He also said that he never wanted to take singing or piano lessons, as it takes too much time. His rationale for having such a lofty dream is simple. "A lot of people love people who can sing," To'o To'o said. "Everybody loves you. Who doesn't love somebody that can sing?" - Knoxville News Sentinel
