Las Vegas Raiders receiver Henry Ruggs III injured his thigh while moving items into the back of a trailer, his father told AL.com Monday afternoon. "He was trying to move a trailer or something -- move furniture or something -- and the trailer just kind of pinned him against a car or a wall or something," Henry Ruggs Jr. said. "He's pretty much OK, I'm about to go out there and see him in a little bit. It was just like a little open wound on his leg, a little incision. Like something had stuck him right there on his thigh a little bit." Ruggs Jr. said he hasn't spoken to the doctor yet but that his son, who starred at Alabama from 2017-2019, "feels OK." "With this COVID-19 stuff still going on, they wouldn't let anybody in," Ruggs Jr. said. "He's just having to walk on crutches. Not putting as much pressure on it." - Birmingham News

The Las Vegas Raiders have straight-from-the-factory parts to follow the Alabama blueprint for offensive success. The Raiders used a first-round draft choice on Alabama running back Josh Jacobs last year, and he became the first rookie in franchise history with 1,000 rushing yards in the 2019 season. Las Vegas used another first-round draft choice on Alabama wide receiver Henry Ruggs III on Thursday night, and the fastest player at this year's NFL Scouting Combine could be the key to even more success for Jacobs in 2020. "I think having balance on offense is always really important," Alabama coach Nick Saban told the Raiders' official website, "and I know that's something that the Raiders probably believe in and how (coach) Jon (Gruden)'s trying to build his program.

"You know, all the great running backs we had here, we always had a great receiver that sort of went with them. When Julio Jones was here, Mark Ingram was the tailback, and you can go through the years and just try to map that out, and it always works that way. And I think they complement one another because if you really want to stop the run you want to put an extra guy in the box all the time, so you've got to play single-high coverage, which leaves one-on-one coverage outside. If you want to stop outside people, you want to play more split-safety coverages, which now you don't have an extra guy in the box, so it's easier to run the ball. I think having guys like that to complement one another is probably the beginning of really developing a very effective offense." - Birmingham News

Henry Ruggs is headed to an organization with a long history of loving wide receivers with big-time speed. The Las Vegas Raiders selected the Alabama wide receiver with the No. 12 pick in the first round of the NFL draft Thursday night. Ruggs, who posted the fastest 40-yard dash time at the NFL scouting combine since 2017, ranks third in Crimson Tide history with 24 career touchdown catches. The Montgomery native had 40 catches for 746 yards and seven touchdowns as a junior for Alabama last season. "I like him a lot," an SEC personnel figure recently told AL.com of Ruggs. "Speed makes him hard to cover. If used right, he can be a lot like Tyreek Hill." It's the second year in a row the Raiders have selected a Crimson Tide player in the first round after taking former Alabama star running back Josh Jacobs in the first round of last year's NFL draft. - Birmingham News

There are very few times in my life I've been overly certain of something, and this is one of those moments. Nothing felt like a sure-fire bet more than the Las Vegas Raiders selecting a wide receiver with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, and General Manager Mike Mayock and Head Coach Jon Gruden didn't disappoint. The newest member of the Silver and Black is the talented playmaker out of the University of Alabama, Henry Ruggs III.

For months now, Ruggs and several other wide receivers were linked to the Raiders given the team's need for a WR1. The 2017 College Football Champion brings an impressive skill set to Gruden's offense, where he'll be asked to learn every route tree, take ownership of the wide receiver room, and help make an immediate impact in Las Vegas. During the Combine, Mayock addressed what's imperative to him when he's evaluating wide receivers entering the league, and it's essential that they have a vast knowledge of the route tree, which Ruggs has. - Raiders.com

Six Alabama players are set to "participate virtually" in the NFL draft, which will be done in a fully virtual format. Those six Crimson Tide players will be wide receiver Henry Ruggs, offensive lineman Jedrick Wills, wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, outside linebacker Terrell Lewis, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and safety Xavier McKinney. Former Alabama and Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts will be among the other 52 players participating virtually in the draft. The NFL, which released that list of players Thursday night, will give more details on what the players will be doing at a later point. - Birmingham News

If you're wondering why Henry Ruggs III is fast climbing up NFL draft boards, listen to two of his old coaches. Listen to Tyrone Rogers, Ruggs' coach at Robert E. Lee High School in Montgomery, Ala. "He plays bigger than what he is," Rogers told The Post. "When I had him, he was only like 5-11, 6-foot, 165 pounds. … You can't tell Henry that he's not 6-4, 220." Listen to Maryland coach Michael Locksley, who was Ruggs' wide receivers coach and assistant offensive coordinator for Nick Saban at Alabama. "He's got a little of Steve Smith toughness, Hines Ward … to me, that type of mentality," Locksley told The Post. "Receivers get high ankle sprains, and some of those guys are done for three, four games. He tapes it up and comes back in. He's gonna play. He loves to play." So Henry Ruggs III is much more than another Tyreek Hill - with none of the accompanying baggage - much more than a former track star who blazed a 4.27 40 at the combine.

What would Rogers tell NFL GMs about Henry Ruggs III? "Ultimate competitor," Rogers said. "You don't have to worry about him off the field." What would Locksley tell NFL GMs about Henry Ruggs III? "I think everybody knows the deep-play threat that he has," Locksley said, "but what you typically see in receivers, and they get that tag as prima donnas - this guy is a workhorse, he plays injured, he plays through pain, he plays very physical without the football … student of the game, a guy that can play all the different positions, learns really well. Unlike most of the receivers that you see nowadays with the flamboyantness, he's kind of your old-school, old-fashioned, let-his-game-do-his talking." A jet for the Jets, perhaps. - NY Post

The stars came out at night inside Lucas Oil Stadium, especially Henry Ruggs III who came up short in his quest to set a record but still clocked the fastest 40-yard dash at the NFL scouting combine. A 4.27-second time in the 40 is nothing to scoff at, but Ruggs had hoped to run faster. The 5-foot-11, 188-pound speedster from Alabama fell short of the record 4.22-second time that Bengals wide receiver set during a blazing 2017 run. Ruggs said he had previously run the 40 in 4.25 seconds and felt he could top that in Indianapolis. He was initially clocked at 4.28 on his first of two runs but the official time was recorded at 4.27 seconds. His second time was 4.31. Ruggs did back up his other boast this week, when he said he was the fastest guy at the NFL scouting combine. - AP College Football
