Despite his consistent high level of production, questions have persisted about Alabama linebacker Henry To'o To'o's relative athleticism as an inside linebacker. While he brings to mind the hard-nosed tacklers of yore, To'o To'o has yet to consistently flash the coverage ability that modern football dictates from its linebackers. He took a step in the right direction with Alabama last season, though, and could easily continue to build on that. If he can pair his production with improved coverage ability, he could be one of the more complete linebacker prospects in the 2023 crop. - Rollbamaroll.com

Replacing Dylan Moses with the top tackler on last year's Tennessee defense isn't a terrible trade off. Just Wednesday, ESPN ranked the top 50 newcomers nationally and To'o To'o was No. 1 ahead of new Georgia tight end Arik Gilbert (formerly of LSU) and No. 3 Bryce Young, the Alabama starting quarterback. And if Alabama were to lose him to anybody on the original recruiting trail, Tennessee was strangely a good spot. The fact he played for former Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt smoothed the path when learning the Tide's plan. "I think his familiarity with the system helped with the transition playing for Jeremy at Tennessee," Saban said Wednesday. "It's a very similar or same defense, probably. I never asked them what they did at Tennessee but just watching them on film, there are a lot of similarities."

Saban called To'o To'o a "very bright guy" who picked up the defense quickly and plays instinctively. Still, he's not crowning anyone the starter at his position. Saban noted two-year Alabama starter Christian Harris is playing well along with top 2020 reserve Jaylen Moody. "So," he said, "there's a lot of competition at that position." To'o To'o started 22 of the 23 games he played with the Vols, netting a team-highs with 76 total tackles and 10 for loss as a sophomore. He made just two stops against Alabama last October in Neyland Stadium after making one stop in the 2019 game in Bryant-Denny. - Birmingham News

Alabama's roster is filled with talent across the board, but the linebacking group might take the crown for most talent. The departure of Moses leaves the spot next to him open. To'o To'o, a transfer from Tennessee this offseason, will be competing for that spot. But he sounds to have already made a strong impression the way coach Nick Saban talked about him at SEC Media Days. The veteran coach called To'o To'o one of the best defensive players in the conference while he was with the Vols. Saban added that his new linebacker can be a quarterback type guy on defense. That doesn't sound like the description of a guy who's going to spend most of his time on the sideline. - Montgomery Advertiser

New Alabama linebacker Henry To'o To'o checks a few uncommon transfer boxes. He's an intraconference transfer from Tennessee, a rarity in the SEC in the past. He's also someone who had an offer from the Crimson Tide in high school, decided to play somewhere else, then transferred to Alabama during college. There aren't many of those either, in part because coach Nick Saban doesn't whiff much in recruiting. To'o To'o is a bit of a unicorn right now, but with new transfer rules, this type of transfer might become less of a unicorn and more of a quarter horse.

The NCAA's new one-time transfer waiver that allows a player to switch schools without sitting out a year has already interrupted the status quo. The SEC agreeing to follow suit will also contribute to changes in trends. Alabama has already taken part in those changes, adding players such as To'o To'o and Ohio State receiver Jameson Williams this offseason. Both had offers from Alabama in high school, and both will be immediately eligible. The rules have changed, but to understand what To'o To'o, Williams and any other future transfers to Tuscaloosa will go through, a look to the past provides a few insights for the future. - Montgomery Advertiser

The SEC will allow immediate eligibility for intra-conference transfers, the league office announced Thursday. The change in policy takes effect immediately, and follows a recent NCAA rule change allowing for a one-time transfer waiver for Division I athletes in all sports. The SEC still had a rule requiring all athletes transferring from one league school to another to sit out a year prior to Thursday's vote of presidents and chancellors. "This is an important measure to further support student-athletes throughout the Southeastern Conference," SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said. "While maintaining the expectation that coaches and others avoid improper recruiting, this change will ensure that student-athletes who enroll at an SEC member institution will enjoy the flexibility afforded to other student-athletes across the nation."

Thursday's policy change affects a number of high-profile SEC-to-SEC transfers, including linebacker Henry To'o To'o (Tennessee to Alabama), safety Donovan Kaufman (Vanderbilt to Auburn) and quarterback TJ Finley (LSU to Auburn) in football and basketball players Desi Sills (Arkansas to Auburn) and K.D. Johnson (Georgia to Auburn). To'o To'o, Finley, Kaufman, Johnson, and Sills, among others, will now be eligible to play at their new schools during the 2021-22 school year. - Birmingham News

Henry To'o To'o improved his chances of smoking a cigar. To'o To'o changed sides in the Third Saturday in October rivalry when the former Tennessee football linebacker committed to Alabama on Saturday. He'll have three years of eligibility remaining. As an undergraduate transfer, an SEC intraconference bylaw requires To'o To'o to sit out a season unless he gains a waiver from the conference. However, SEC leaders are expected to review that bylaw in the coming weeks and could vote to alter or remove it to allow intraconference transfers immediate eligibility. That means To'o To'o has a chance to line up across from his former team when the Vols play at Alabama on Oct. 23.

But even if To'o To'o gains immediate eligibility, will he be a starter for Alabama? To'o To'o was one of UT's top defensive players, leading the Vols with 76 tackles last season. Alabama returns starting inside linebacker Christian Harris. The other starting inside linebacker spot is up for grabs, with veteran reserve Jaylen Moody and four-star early enrollee Deontae Lawson among the top contenders. Lawson signed as a top-100 recruit. Additionally, the competition includes Shane Lee, a Freshman All-America selection in 2019. To'o To'o is at a disadvantage having not participated in spring practice. - Montgomery Advertiser

Former Tennessee linebacker Henry To'o To'o announced Saturday he is transferring to Alabama. "I thank you for everything Heavenly Father," To'o To'o wrote on Instagram. "ROLL TIDE" One of the top linebacker prospects in the 2019 class, To'o To'o played two seasons at Tennessee. He entered the transfer portal in January. To'o To'o has the potential to play immediately at Alabama after the NCAA approved a one-time transfer waiver last month. However, the SEC still must change its intraconference transfer rule to allow To'o To'o to play this season.

Several other major conferences have eliminated their rules prohibiting players from participating immediately after transferring within the conference. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said this week the conference is expected to make a decision by the "end of May, early June" on its rule. To'o To'o, an all-freshman SEC selection in 2019 who played at De La Salle High School in California, becomes a potential starter in Alabama's defense alongside fellow junior Christian Harris in a spot occupied last season by Dylan Moses. Coach Nick Saban said this spring that senior Jaylen Moody had "taken advantage" of his chance to start, but now it appears Moody and To'o To'o will be competing for the same job. - Birmingham News

Tennessee's leading tackler Henry To'o To'o is heading to rival Alabama. The junior linebacker announced Saturday on social media that he was transferring to the defending national champions. To'o To'o would likely be a candidate to replace starting inside linebacker Dylan Moses. A new NCAA policy allows players to transfer once and be eligible to play immediately. However, the Southeastern Conference currently requires intraconference transfers to sit out a season. To'o To'o had 148 tackles over his first two seasons with the Volunteers, leading the team with 76 tackles and 10 stops for a loss as a sophomore. To'o To'o was a Top 50 recruit and the third-rated outside linebacker in 2019, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. - AP College Football

Could former Tennessee linebacker Henry To'o To'o continue Ohio State football's streak of bringing in immediate-impact transfers? The NCAA's long-await transfer reform could make that possible - with an assist from the even-slower-to-act Southeastern Conference. In each of the past two seasons, the Buckeyes struck gold with a graduate transfer - offensive lineman Jonah Jackson in 2019 and running back Trey Sermon in 2020. Justin Fields needed the NCAA's previous eligibility loophole - a waiver application - to make his immediate impact in 2019. The landscape officially changed Wednesday. The Division I Board of Governors ratified legislation granting immediate eligibility for first-time transfers. (Those transferring for a second time can still use the waiver process.) That development, while not unexpected, comes at a crucial moment for Ohio State. To'o To'o has previously been linked to Alabama and Ohio State as his most likely destinations. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Former Tennessee linebacker Henry To'o To'o is strongly considering transferring to a rival school, according to his father. Iese To'o To'o told BamaOnLine, a 247Sports affiliate, that his son is "heavily leaning towards Alabama." To'o To'o entered the NCAA transfer portal on Jan. 20, two days after Tennessee fired coach Jeremy Pruitt. He's enrolled in classes at UT while eyeing his next move. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound To'o To'o was a two-year starting inside linebacker at Tennessee. Because the 2020 season did not count against an athlete's eligibility, To'o To'o will remain a sophomore next season. He made 148 tackles during his Vols career, including a team-high 76 in 2020. - Montgomery Advertiser

Tennessee has fired football coach Jeremy Pruitt, two assistants and seven members of the Volunteers' recruiting and support staff for cause after an internal investigation found what the university chancellor called "serious violations of NCAA rules." Chancellor Donde Plowman said Pruitt was responsible for overseeing the program. Tennessee has been conducting an internal investigation since at least the middle of November into allegations of recruiting violations. Also fired Monday were assistant football coaches Brian Niedermeyer and Shelton Felton, four members of the on-campus football recruiting staff, the director and assistant director of football player personnel and a football analyst/quality control coach. The chancellor said the potential NCAA issues involved Level I and II violations with a number of people and incidents. NCAA investigators became more actively involved within the past 10 days. - AP College Football

When linebacker Henry To'o To'o signed with Tennessee in February 2019, it answered the question of where the top-50 national prospect would play college football. Nobody knew then that the question would eventually become whether he would play football. To'o To'o hails from California prep powerhouse De La Salle in Concord, which is 30 miles from San Francisco and 22 miles from Oakland. It's right in the heart of Pac-12 Conference country, with Stanford University in Palo Alto an hour away and with the University of California in Berkeley less than a half-hour drive.

The Pac-12 announced earlier this month that it was following the Big Ten's lead and would be cancelling all fall semester sports due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Big Ten and Pac-12 are attempting to play football in the spring. "A lot of people in the Pac-12 who I know are pretty bummed, to be honest with you," To'o To'o said. "I have a lot of family in the Pac-12, and being able to talk to them, they also wanted a season and they also wanted to play. That wasn't their call to make." As the Volunteers and the rest of the Southeastern Conference programs progress through their second week of preseason camp, those SEC players from outside the league's 11-state footprint realize how fortunate they have it. Those within the SEC footprint, of course, are beginning to recognize it as well. - Chattanooga Times Free Press

Tennessee football linebacker Henry To'o To'o has a dream career in mind. It doesn't have anything to do with the sport that he plays. The first guest on "The Slice," a new podcast hosted by VFL Films' Kasey Funderburg that will feature different players from the football program, To'o To'o revealed that, without football, he would want to be a musician. There's just one hurdle he'd have to clear: He can't sing. "I want to be a musician, I want to be a singer," To'o To'o said. "But I can't sing. That's a dream of mine, I want to be able to sing and play piano and play guitar."

To'o To'o said that a lot of his family, both on his mom's and dad's side, can sing well, and at family gatherings he tends to feel left out. He also said that he never wanted to take singing or piano lessons, as it takes too much time. His rationale for having such a lofty dream is simple. "A lot of people love people who can sing," To'o To'o said. "Everybody loves you. Who doesn't love somebody that can sing?" - Knoxville News Sentinel
