The Wildcats also announced that running back Cam Porter, who led them in rushing as a freshman last fall, will miss the season after suffering a lower-body injury during preseason camp. Porter rushed for 333 yards with five touchdowns in seven games last season. With Porter out, the rushing duties likely will be shared among Bowling Green graduate transfer Andrew Clair, redshirt sophomore Evan Hull and freshman Anthony Tyus III. The versatile Clair rushed for 1,937 yards and 13 touchdowns and caught 44 passes for 330 yards and four scores in 30 games over four seasons at Bowling Green, twice earning third-team All-MAC recognition. Hull has 495 rushing yards and six touchdowns in 13 games over the last two seasons. - Chicago Tribune

With each day, Yanni Karlaftis feels better. He's regaining his quickness. His confidence grows with each repetition. His comfort level increases as he learns the playbook. It's been a long process for the West Lafayette graduate to finally participate in a practice. Any practice. He's made it through four at Purdue and the next step is to play for the Boilermakers during the upcoming season. "It's actually been fun to play some football," Karlaftis said. Karlaftis hasn't played in a game since last year's season opener between the Red Devils and Lafayette Jeff. A hamstring injury sidelined the star linebacker for the rest of the 2020 season and it carried over to Purdue where Karlaftis didn't compete in spring practice.

He enrolled in January with the idea spring practice would be the beginning of his college career, teaming with his older brother, George, a defensive end who may be entering his last season before heading to the NFL. Instead, the younger Karlaftis spent most of his time in the training room rehabilitating his hamstring, which was in bad shape, and working with strength and conditioning coaches. It wasn't until summer conditioning that Karlaftis was returned to being a football player. "I knew my hamstring was really bad," Karlaftis said. "I've never been injured too much before like that. Getting it back took so long. I didn't think I would be out too much of my high school season. That, along with spring ball, and however long I've been here. "Every day I feel better. Every day I feel fast. It's really nice." - Journal and Courier

Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney said sophomore cornerback Fred Davis will have to deal with "lots of consequences...for a long, long time" after being charged with reckless driving following an accident that left a mail carrier seriously injured. Davis was arrested, then released, on Sunday after police said probable cause was found to charge him in the incident. Swinney spoke Friday for the first time about what happened. "We had one incredibly unfortunate situation with Fred Davis last month," Swinney said. "I'm thankful to the good Lord and all those people, the responders that were on the scene there that what was an incredibly serious situation didn't become tragic." Reports indicated that on the afternoon of July 21, Davis was going 115 mph in a 55 mph zone in a black Dodge Charger going southbound on Highway 123 before Highway 93.

He left 290 feet of skid marks before colliding with a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier truck at 70 mph, Clemson police said. The truck was still in motion at the time of the crash. The USPS driver, who was found hanging upside down partially outside of the truck and still buckled, was transported to Greenville Memorial Hospital, police said. Davis gave responding police officers a written statement before complaining of a leg injury, according to police. He was then transported to Oconee Medical Center. "This is not of his character," Swinney said. "I'm incredibly disappointed in his decision-making. It's that simple. Just a poor decision. He's going to deal with lots of consequences." - The State

A Clemson football player slammed on brakes before he crashed into the back of a mail carrier at 70 mph. That detail and more are in a supplemental report regarding Clemson sophomore cornerback Fred Davis's car wreck that was released by Clemson police on Monday morning. According to the report, Davis was driving a 2021 Dodge Charger with a temporary Alabama plate at 115 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone going southbound on Highway 123 before Highway 93 on the afternoon of July 21. He left 290 feet of skid marks and lost 45 mph, hitting the USPS mail carrier truck, which was still in motion, at 70 mph. "Further time and distance studies were conducted and it was determined that at the traveling speed of 115MPH Davis closed a distance of approximately 833 feet in five seconds," the report stated.

On Sunday, Davis turned himself in to Clemson police to face a misdemeanor charge of reckless driving. He was booked and released. "Had Davis been operating his vehicle in a safe manner this collision would not have occurred," the report concludes, noting Davis had plenty of space to stop safely if he had been driving within the speed limit. Clemson athletics told The State on Sunday that Davis remains with the team and will be subject to "internal discipline for misdemeanor charges" in line with the Clemson Student-Athlete Handbook. - The State

Clemson cornerback Fred Davis II was arrested and charged with misdemeanor reckless driving for going 60 mph over the posted speed limit in July, leading to an accident. The Clemson Police Department said in a release Sunday that Davis was traveling at 115 mph before colliding with a mail truck and injuring the driver on July 21. Davis turned himself in Sunday and has been released on bail. Clemson police said the mail carrier sustained severe injuries in the wreck and "will require months or longer for recovery." Davis was not injured in the accident. The school said Davis remains with the program and will be subject to internal discipline, per the Clemson Student-Athlete Handbook. Davis, from Jacksonville, Florida, played in 11 games as a freshman in 2020. The 6-foot defensive back had 13 tackles and broke up two passes, both coming in Clemson's win over Notre Dame in the ACC Championship game a year ago. - AP College Football

At the beginning of each season, Northwestern selects one player to wear the No. 1 jersey. The honor, created in 2011, recognizes "the student-athlete who truly embodies the values and character of the Northwestern football family." A decade later, Greg Newsome II started a new tradition with the No. 2 jersey. Before he was selected 26th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns, the former Wildcats cornerback passed down No. 2 - his own jersey number - to redshirt sophomore defensive back Cameron Mitchell, who wore No. 21 last season and allowed the lowest completion rate in the Big Ten. "He's one of the next guys up, so I wanted to pass the number down to him," Newsome told The Daily in April. "(No.) 2 is gonna be something that we're starting now." Earning the No. 2 jersey is a new honor for the best returning secondaries in the country. - The Daily Northwestern

On Thursday night Northwestern had two players drafted in the first round for the first time in team history. Northwestern offensive tackle Rashawn Slater, one of 12 players on site in Cleveland for the 2021 NFL draft, was selected 13th overall by the Los Angeles Chargers in Thursday's first round. Cornerback Greg Newsome II watched virtually with his family as he was taken with the 26th overall pick by the Cleveland Browns. Slater, a 6-foot-5, 304-pound left tackle who opted out of the 2020 season, was the first Wildcats player taken in the first round since defensive tackle Luis Castillo in 2005. His selection ended the third-longest active first-round drought among Power Five programs. - Chicago Tribune

West Virginia University football has yet another unexpected loss to its starting defensive lineup. On Wednesday afternoon, senior defensive lineman Jeffery Pooler Jr. took to social media to announce his decision to enter the NCAA transfer portal. Pooler took advantage of the NCAA's offered extra year of eligibility after last season, but as it turns out, that extra season won't come with the Mountaineers. Pooler becomes the third starter off of the Mountaineer defense to transfer this offseason, joining spear Tykee Smith and cornerback Dreshun Miller, who have since landed at Georgia and Auburn, respectively. Pooler appeared in 38 games over four seasons with the Mountaineers, making 52 tackles, with 23 of them coming last season. He also set career highs in sacks (three) and tackles for loss (six) in 2020. - Charleston Gazette-Mail

Another day, another West Virginia player says goodbye. This time it's in football as defensive end Jeffery Pooler, an experienced player, a third starter from the defense, announced on Twitter that he is entering the transfer portal. The way that's going there may wind up with more players across the country in the portal than not, last year's cycle having included almost 2,000 players. Pooler was expected to share the position with Taijh Alston, who missed most of the past two seasons with injuries but who now is healthy and played well in the spring game. Still, Pooler hurts the depth on the offensive line, which is one of the most potent units the Mountaineers have with Dante Stills at tackle and Akheem Mesidor at nose guard, backed up by Jordan Jefferson. Pooler had 26 tackles last year, 5.5 for a loss, with 2.5 sacks and three pass deflections. - Charleston Gazette-Mail

One of the top kicking prospects in the 2020 recruiting class has made plans to leave the Michigan State football program. Jack Olsen entered the NCAA transfer portal Sunday, less than 24 hours after the Spartans held their final spring practice. Olsen, who was on scholarship, has joined the exodus of players out of East Lansing that began last fall. Nineteen members of the team have entered the portal since November as head coach Mel Tucker has overhauled the roster by securing the commitments of 14 players from other college programs. - Lansing State Journal

Increasing the tight end's role in Arizona's offense was one of many promises on Jedd Fisch's checklist when he accepted the head coaching job, which was evident after hiring a full-time tight ends coach, Jordan Paopao, and allowing program icon Rob Gronkowski to coach in the UA's spring game. Lines, a 6-foot-5-inch, 245-pound former three-star prospect, played his freshman season with the Rebels and reunites with his position coach in Paopao, who recently coached at UNLV. - Arizona Star News

Northwestern added valuable depth to its running back room Monday, receiving a commitment from graduate transfer running back Andrew Clair, formerly of Bowling Green. "2021 will be full of accomplishments and new beginnings," Clair said in announcing his decision via Twitter early Monday afternoon. "See you in Evanston in the fall." Clair leaves the Falcons after a successful four-year career in which he rushed for 1,937 yards and 13 touchdowns in 30 games. He accomplished these feats despite BGSU going 8-33 in his four years with the program, a litany of injuries, and an unthinkable personal tragedy in the loss of his 25-year-old sister, Tanisha Watson, to COVID-19 in the fall of 2020. - The Daily Northwestern
