Eastern Michigan (6-3, 3-2 Mid-American Conference) became bowl eligible for the fourth time in the previous five full seasons, and just the sixth time in program history. Jawon Hamilton scored on a 32-yard run to extend Eastern Michigan's lead to 52-36 with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter.   Ben Bryant passed for two touchdowns and ran for a third and Eastern Michigan rolled to a 55-24 win over Bowling Green on Saturday. The Eagles (5-3, 2-2 Mid-American Conference) scored three touchdowns in both the second and third quarters. Bryant had a 31-yard scoring pass to Bryson Cannon and his touchdown run in a second quarter that was highlighted by David Carter's 42-yard punt return for a touchdown. That helped Eastern Michigan take a 24-10 lead at the half.

Bryant connected with Gunnar Oakes for a 37- yard score in the third quarter and Darius Boone ran for a score before running back Samson Evans found Dylan Drummond for a 16-yard score, set up when the Falcons lost a fumble on the kickoff.   10/16/21 - Ryan HilinskirSr/2025, Northwestern, 6-3, 225 (DS#45 QB) + More +

Ryan Hilinski threw for 267 yards and two touchdown passes on Saturday afternoon to boost Northwestern to a 21-7 victory over Rutgers. Hilinski, making his third start since transferring from South Carolina, opened the scoring for the Wildcats (3-3, 1-2 Big Ten) by capping off a 98-yard drive in the first quarter, hitting Malik Washington for a 64-yard touchdown pass. The completion - Hilinski's longest as a Wildcat - helped his team secure its first conference win of the season. "I think one of the biggest things is that we're continuing to have fun," Hilinski said. "This is a game we played when we were 5 years old. I personally play best when I'm having fun and just recognizing that this is a game we've been playing our whole lives." Washington plowed through a downfield defender on his touchdown grab and finished with 84 receiving yards on five catches.

Fellow wideout Stephon Robinson Jr. had 115 yards, taking pressure off a Wildcats rushing attack that struggled to get going throughout the day. Often a key to Northwestern's offensive approach, the ground game combined for just 135 yards on 48 attempts. "Really proud of the squad," Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald said. "The way they bounced back this game and these last couple weeks. I thought they put a ton of work in to get better fundamentally. We were able to carry our preparation over into the game." - Northwestern/AP College Football

  10/10/21 - Ben BryantrSr/2024, Northwestern, 6-4, 218 (DS#22 QB) + More +

Ben Bryant's 16-yard pass to Bryson Cannon over the middle was the lone touchdown in a game that saw six field goals provide the bulk of the scoring as Eastern Michigan edged Miami (Ohio) 13-12 in a Mid-American Conference battle on Saturday. The touchdown capped an eight-play, 73-yard drive as Cannon crashed through a pair of defenders to give Eastern Michigan (4-2, 1-1) a 7-6 lead midway through the second quarter. Chad Ryland tacked on field goals of 47 and 33 yards as the Eagles extended their lead to 13-6.

Graham Nicholson, who kicked four field goals for the RedHawks (2-4, 1-1), booted 31 and 44-yarders that cut the gap to 13-12 with 6:29 left to play. Eastern Michigan sealed the one-point win when A.J. Mayer's fourth-down pass was deflected at the line of scrimmage, ending the RedHawks final drive with under two minutes to go. The Eagles took over and wound the clock down to almost zero before punting. Bryant went 21-of-31 passing for 206 yards. Miami outgained the Eagles 385 yards to 257 with Mayer throwing for 259 yards. Jack Sorenson had 123 yards on seven catches for the RedHawks. - Eastern Michigan/AP College Football

Ben Bryant threw for three touchdowns and ran for another to lead Eastern Michigan to a 59-21 win over Texas State on Saturday. The Eagles (3-1) used a balanced attack in picking up the win with four passing touchdowns and four on the ground. Eastern Michigan threw for 257 yards and rushed for 247 in outgaining the Bobcats (1-3) 504-300. But the Eagles responded with 31 consecutive points. Samson Evans rushed for two touchdowns for Eastern Michigan as seven different Eagles reached the end zone.   Evan Hull rushed for 216 yards and a pair of touchdowns Saturday afternoon to lead Northwestern to a 35-6 win over Ohio. Hull bounced off a defender at the line of scrimmage late in the first quarter before sprinting away for a 90-yard score that helped set the Wildcats (2-2) up for their first win over an FBS team this season. The Wildcats' ground game amassed 373 yards to take the pressure off sophomore Ryan Hilinski, who completed just 12 passes for 88 yards in his first start replacing Hunter Johnson.

While its defense struggled to stop the hosts, Ohio (0-4) remained winless after often killing its own drives with a combination of turnovers, costly penalties and sacks. Kurtis Rourke was 20-for-29 for 166 yards with a fumble and an interception. Anthony Tyus III and Jake Arthurs added late touchdown runs and Charlie Kuhbander made a pair of short field goals for Northwestern, which led 17-0 at intermission. The Wildcats (1-1) never trailed, stopping the Sycamores (1-1) in the first matchup between the two programs.

With each day, Yanni Karlaftis feels better. He's regaining his quickness. His confidence grows with each repetition. His comfort level increases as he learns the playbook. It's been a long process for the West Lafayette graduate to finally participate in a practice. Any practice. He's made it through four at Purdue and the next step is to play for the Boilermakers during the upcoming season. "It's actually been fun to play some football," Karlaftis said. Karlaftis hasn't played in a game since last year's season opener between the Red Devils and Lafayette Jeff. A hamstring injury sidelined the star linebacker for the rest of the 2020 season and it carried over to Purdue where Karlaftis didn't compete in spring practice.

He enrolled in January with the idea spring practice would be the beginning of his college career, teaming with his older brother, George, a defensive end who may be entering his last season before heading to the NFL. Instead, the younger Karlaftis spent most of his time in the training room rehabilitating his hamstring, which was in bad shape, and working with strength and conditioning coaches. It wasn't until summer conditioning that Karlaftis was returned to being a football player. "I knew my hamstring was really bad," Karlaftis said. "I've never been injured too much before like that. Getting it back took so long. I didn't think I would be out too much of my high school season. That, along with spring ball, and however long I've been here. "Every day I feel better. Every day I feel fast. It's really nice." - Journal and Courier

  08/09/21 - Fred Davis IIrSr/2026, Northwestern, 6-0, 197 (DS#58 CB) + More +

Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney said sophomore cornerback Fred Davis will have to deal with "lots of consequences...for a long, long time" after being charged with reckless driving following an accident that left a mail carrier seriously injured. Davis was arrested, then released, on Sunday after police said probable cause was found to charge him in the incident. Swinney spoke Friday for the first time about what happened. "We had one incredibly unfortunate situation with Fred Davis last month," Swinney said. "I'm thankful to the good Lord and all those people, the responders that were on the scene there that what was an incredibly serious situation didn't become tragic." Reports indicated that on the afternoon of July 21, Davis was going 115 mph in a 55 mph zone in a black Dodge Charger going southbound on Highway 123 before Highway 93.

He left 290 feet of skid marks before colliding with a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier truck at 70 mph, Clemson police said. The truck was still in motion at the time of the crash. The USPS driver, who was found hanging upside down partially outside of the truck and still buckled, was transported to Greenville Memorial Hospital, police said. Davis gave responding police officers a written statement before complaining of a leg injury, according to police. He was then transported to Oconee Medical Center. "This is not of his character," Swinney said. "I'm incredibly disappointed in his decision-making. It's that simple. Just a poor decision. He's going to deal with lots of consequences." - The State

  08/03/21 - Fred Davis IIrSr/2026, Northwestern, 6-0, 197 (DS#58 CB) + More +

A Clemson football player slammed on brakes before he crashed into the back of a mail carrier at 70 mph. That detail and more are in a supplemental report regarding Clemson sophomore cornerback Fred Davis's car wreck that was released by Clemson police on Monday morning. According to the report, Davis was driving a 2021 Dodge Charger with a temporary Alabama plate at 115 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone going southbound on Highway 123 before Highway 93 on the afternoon of July 21. He left 290 feet of skid marks and lost 45 mph, hitting the USPS mail carrier truck, which was still in motion, at 70 mph. "Further time and distance studies were conducted and it was determined that at the traveling speed of 115MPH Davis closed a distance of approximately 833 feet in five seconds," the report stated.

On Sunday, Davis turned himself in to Clemson police to face a misdemeanor charge of reckless driving. He was booked and released. "Had Davis been operating his vehicle in a safe manner this collision would not have occurred," the report concludes, noting Davis had plenty of space to stop safely if he had been driving within the speed limit. Clemson athletics told The State on Sunday that Davis remains with the team and will be subject to "internal discipline for misdemeanor charges" in line with the Clemson Student-Athlete Handbook. - The State
