Ben Bryant threw for 354 yards and three touchdowns, Hassan Beydoun caught 12 passes for 192 yards and two scores, and Eastern Michigan beat Toledo 52-49 on Tuesday night. Eastern Michigan (6-3, 3-2 Mid-American Conference) became bowl eligible for the fourth time in the previous five full seasons, and just the sixth time in program history. Jawon Hamilton scored on a 32-yard run to extend Eastern Michigan's lead to 52-36 with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Toledo got within three points with 2:14 remaining on Micah Kelly's 10-yard touchdown run and forced a three-and-out to get it back with 35 seconds left but time ran out before getting into field-goal range.

Toledo outgained EMU 672-490, but turned it over three times. Toledo entered ranked first in the MAC in scoring defense (18.3) and second in total defense (326.9). Redshirt freshman Dequan Finn was 30 of 45 for 461 yards with three touchdowns and one interception for Toledo (4-5, 2-3). Ben Bryant passed for two touchdowns and ran for a third and Eastern Michigan rolled to a 55-24 win over Bowling Green on Saturday. The Eagles (5-3, 2-2 Mid-American Conference) scored three touchdowns in both the second and third quarters. Bryant had a 31-yard scoring pass to Bryson Cannon and his touchdown run in a second quarter that was highlighted by David Carter's 42-yard punt return for a touchdown. That helped Eastern Michigan take a 24-10 lead at the half.

Bryant connected with Gunnar Oakes for a 37- yard score in the third quarter and Darius Boone ran for a score before running back Samson Evans found Dylan Drummond for a 16-yard score, set up when the Falcons lost a fumble on the kickoff. Backup quarterback Preston Hutchinson had a touchdown pass to Thomas Odukoya in the fourth quarter. Bryant was 20 of 26 for 286 yards. Ryan Hilinski threw for 267 yards and two touchdown passes on Saturday afternoon to boost Northwestern to a 21-7 victory over Rutgers. Hilinski, making his third start since transferring from South Carolina, opened the scoring for the Wildcats (3-3, 1-2 Big Ten) by capping off a 98-yard drive in the first quarter, hitting Malik Washington for a 64-yard touchdown pass. The completion - Hilinski's longest as a Wildcat - helped his team secure its first conference win of the season. "I think one of the biggest things is that we're continuing to have fun," Hilinski said. "This is a game we played when we were 5 years old. I personally play best when I'm having fun and just recognizing that this is a game we've been playing our whole lives." Washington plowed through a downfield defender on his touchdown grab and finished with 84 receiving yards on five catches.

Fellow wideout Stephon Robinson Jr. had 115 yards, taking pressure off a Wildcats rushing attack that struggled to get going throughout the day. Often a key to Northwestern's offensive approach, the ground game combined for just 135 yards on 48 attempts. "Really proud of the squad," Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald said. "The way they bounced back this game and these last couple weeks. I thought they put a ton of work in to get better fundamentally. Ben Bryant's 16-yard pass to Bryson Cannon over the middle was the lone touchdown in a game that saw six field goals provide the bulk of the scoring as Eastern Michigan edged Miami (Ohio) 13-12 in a Mid-American Conference battle on Saturday. The touchdown capped an eight-play, 73-yard drive as Cannon crashed through a pair of defenders to give Eastern Michigan (4-2, 1-1) a 7-6 lead midway through the second quarter. Chad Ryland tacked on field goals of 47 and 33 yards as the Eagles extended their lead to 13-6.

Graham Nicholson, who kicked four field goals for the RedHawks (2-4, 1-1), booted 31 and 44-yarders that cut the gap to 13-12 with 6:29 left to play. Eastern Michigan sealed the one-point win when A.J. Mayer's fourth-down pass was deflected at the line of scrimmage, ending the RedHawks final drive with under two minutes to go. The Eagles took over and wound the clock down to almost zero before punting. Bryant went 21-of-31 passing for 206 yards. Miami outgained the Eagles 385 yards to 257 with Mayer throwing for 259 yards. SEPT 27 MAC WEST DIVISION CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Ben Bryant, Eastern Michigan, Quarterback, Senior, La Grange, Ill. (Lyons Twp.) (Cincinnati),...Senior quarterback Ben Bryant threw for a career-high three touchdowns against Texas State, Sept. 25 as he completed 20-of-33 pass attempts en route to 228 yards through the air. Along with a rushing touchdown, the first-year Eagle accounted for four touchdowns in Eastern's historic, 59-21 win over Texas State. His performance marked the 42nd time in program history that an EMU QB has thrown for three scores. The Eagles' 38-point margin of victory was the largest against a non-conference FBS program under Chris Creighton. Furthermore, the 59-21 triumph ranks as the 37th-largest margin of victory since the program began in 1891. Overall, EMU's 59 points were the most scored against a non-conference FBS foe. The Charlie Batch-lead Eagles of 1995 held the previous standard of 51 in a 45-point victory over UNLV, Sept. 16, 1995. Batch is a MAC Hall of Famer. Furthermore, Bryant led EMU to 33 first downs against Texas State, which ranks third in the EMU record books for a single game. Hull's 216 yards are the seventh-most by an FBS player and the third most by a Big Ten player this season...Scored on a career-long 90-yard run in the first quarter, marking the Wildcats' longest play from scrimmage since Jeremy Ebert's 90-yard touchdown reception vs. Rice on Nov. 12, 2011...Hull's 90-yard touchdown run was just the second 90-plus yard touchdown run by an FBS player this season and the fourth 90-plus yard run in Northwestern history. Ben Bryant threw for three touchdowns and ran for another to lead Eastern Michigan to a 59-21 win over Texas State on Saturday. The Eagles (3-1) used a balanced attack in picking up the win with four passing touchdowns and four on the ground. Eastern Michigan threw for 257 yards and rushed for 247 in outgaining the Bobcats (1-3) 504-300. Bryant's 39-yard run gave Eastern Michigan a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and the Eagles never trailed.

The Bobcats got a 29-yard pass from Brady McBride to Trevis Graham Jr. in the final two minutes of the first half and then another McBride 29-yarder, this one to Javen Banks, to cut the lead to 28-21 early in the third quarter. But the Eagles responded with 31 consecutive points. Samson Evans rushed for two touchdowns for Eastern Michigan as seven different Eagles reached the end zone. Bryant finished 20-of-33 passing for 228 yards and rushed for another 52 yards. Dylan Drummond had a touchdown catch and threw for another off a double-pass play. Evan Hull rushed for 216 yards and a pair of touchdowns Saturday afternoon to lead Northwestern to a 35-6 win over Ohio. Hull bounced off a defender at the line of scrimmage late in the first quarter before sprinting away for a 90-yard score that helped set the Wildcats (2-2) up for their first win over an FBS team this season. The Wildcats' ground game amassed 373 yards to take the pressure off sophomore Ryan Hilinski, who completed just 12 passes for 88 yards in his first start replacing Hunter Johnson.

While its defense struggled to stop the hosts, Ohio (0-4) remained winless after often killing its own drives with a combination of turnovers, costly penalties and sacks. Kurtis Rourke was 20-for-29 for 166 yards with a fumble and an interception. Anthony Tyus III and Jake Arthurs added late touchdown runs and Charlie Kuhbander made a pair of short field goals for Northwestern, which led 17-0 at intermission. Ben Bryant threw for 298 yards and a score, Jawon Hamilton rushed for 122 yards with a touchdown and Eastern Michigan defeated UMass 42-28 on Saturday. Darius Boone Jr. added two short touchdown runs for the Eagles. Hassan Beydoun made six catches for 101 yards. The Eagles (2-1) led 35-14 after Hamilton's 10-yard run early in the fourth quarter. Ben Bryant added a 54-yard TD pass to Zach Westmoreland to make it 42-21 with just over four minutes remaining. David Carter's interception, his second in two weeks, set up a nine-play drive that ended with Samson Evans scoring from 13 yards out for a 21-0 lead before the Minutemen got their first points on Josiah Johnson's 1-yard run that completed an 80-yard drive to trail 21-7 at the break.

Hutchinson and Boone had TD runs to complete a pair of first-quarter Eastern Michigan drives for a 14-0 lead. Brady Olson threw for 288 yards including TD passes of 45 yards to Melvin Hill and a 29-yarder to Johnson along with an interception. Ellis Merriweather rushed for a career-high 142 yards on 23 carries and Carter Scudo ran for a 2-yard TD for UMass. The teams combined for more than 1,000 yards offense. Evan Hull ran for 126 yards and two touchdowns and Northwestern beat Indiana State 24-6 on Saturday. Hull led the way for a Wildcats rushing unit that surpassed last week's 117 total yards against Michigan State at the half and finished with 209. He ran for 51 yards on the team's opening drive and capped it with a 3-yard touchdown run. "When you look at where you're at as a Big Ten team playing against a FCS team, you have to pound the ball," Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald said. "For the most part, when we targeted things right and executed I thought we did a good job." The Wildcats (1-1) never trailed, stopping the Sycamores (1-1) in the first matchup between the two programs.

After throwing for 283 yards against Michigan State, Hunter Johnson finished with 66 yards passing with a touchdown. The senior completed 9 of 16 passes in his second start as the Wildcat starter. Freshman Anthony Tyus III rushed for 71 yards for Northwestern, which outgained Indiana State 275-169 in total yards and 209-91 in rushing. Indiana State's Anthony Thompson passed for 132 yards and a touchdown, completing 21 of 34 passes in his second start for Indiana State after transferring from Northern Illinois. The Wildcats also announced that running back Cam Porter, who led them in rushing as a freshman last fall, will miss the season after suffering a lower-body injury during preseason camp. Porter rushed for 333 yards with five touchdowns in seven games last season. With Porter out, the rushing duties likely will be shared among Bowling Green graduate transfer Andrew Clair, redshirt sophomore Evan Hull and freshman Anthony Tyus III. The versatile Clair rushed for 1,937 yards and 13 touchdowns and caught 44 passes for 330 yards and four scores in 30 games over four seasons at Bowling Green, twice earning third-team All-MAC recognition. At the beginning of each season, Northwestern selects one player to wear the No. 1 jersey. The honor, created in 2011, recognizes "the student-athlete who truly embodies the values and character of the Northwestern football family." A decade later, Greg Newsome II started a new tradition with the No. 2 jersey. Before he was selected 26th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns, the former Wildcats cornerback passed down No. 2 - his own jersey number - to redshirt sophomore defensive back Cameron Mitchell, who wore No. 21 last season and allowed the lowest completion rate in the Big Ten. "He's one of the next guys up, so I wanted to pass the number down to him," Newsome told The Daily in April. "(No.) 2 is gonna be something that we're starting now." On Thursday night Northwestern had two players drafted in the first round for the first time in team history. Northwestern offensive tackle Rashawn Slater, one of 12 players on site in Cleveland for the 2021 NFL draft, was selected 13th overall by the Los Angeles Chargers in Thursday's first round. Cornerback Greg Newsome II watched virtually with his family as he was taken with the 26th overall pick by the Cleveland Browns. Slater, a 6-foot-5, 304-pound left tackle who opted out of the 2020 season, was the first Wildcats player taken in the first round since defensive tackle Luis Castillo in 2005. West Virginia University football has yet another unexpected loss to its starting defensive lineup. On Wednesday afternoon, senior defensive lineman Jeffery Pooler Jr. took to social media to announce his decision to enter the NCAA transfer portal. Pooler took advantage of the NCAA's offered extra year of eligibility after last season, but as it turns out, that extra season won't come with the Mountaineers. Pooler becomes the third starter off of the Mountaineer defense to transfer this offseason, joining spear Tykee Smith and cornerback Dreshun Miller, who have since landed at Georgia and Auburn, respectively. Pooler appeared in 38 games over four seasons with the Mountaineers, making 52 tackles, with 23 of them coming last season. He also set career highs in sacks (three) and tackles for loss (six) in 2020. - Charleston Gazette-Mail
