Momentum. Drive times opportunity. Heart times hard work. Those are some of the staple phrases in Nebraska's national television spot. Such narration could also be used to describe Northwestern junior quarterback Ryan Hilinski's performance against the Cornhuskers on Saturday. "I was just excited to go out there and play with the guys because man, we've been through a lot this offseason and we're just excited to get out there and play football again," Hilinski said. "Show the people who the Wildcats are and they don't forget again." Hilinski, who didn't find out he was the starter until right before kickoff, was a man on a mission in Dublin.

His offseason preparation and confidence both internally and in offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian's playbook was evident early in the game. He started out a perfect 8-for-8 before an incomplete pass around three minutes into the second quarter. His next pass? A 41-yard touchdown throw to senior wideout Raymond Niro III. The highlight was a much-needed boost for NU after opening the 75-yard drive down 14-3 and on the backfoot against the Cornhuskers. "At the end of the day it was (about) playing within myself, playing within the offense," Hilinski said of his early start. "Coach Bajakian called a great game. That opening script we had was great and made me feel really calm." - The Daily Northwestern

Compared to Northwestern's offensive presence last season, the Wildcats had a strong presence offensively on the field. The group appeared solid, pushing past Nebraska's defensive line and rushing to the flat side and grab yards. Junior running backs Evan Hull and Cam Porter led the group combining for a total of 213 yards. With Porter's return to the field after an ACL injury ending his 2021 season short, the dynamic duo's presence on the field will be a key component to the Cats' offensive success. - The Daily Northwestern

Ryan Hilinski threw for 313 yards and two touchdowns to help Northwestern rally for a 31-28 victory over Nebraska in Saturday's season opener in Ireland. Northwestern handed the Cornhuskers their seventh consecutive loss going back to last season and added more pressure on embattled coach Scott Frost, who took the blame for a failed onside kick that changed the momentum of the game in the third quarter. The Wildcats (1-0, 1-0 Big Ten) finished with 527 yards and gained a measure of revenge after their humiliating 56-7 loss to the Huskers last October. Nebraska hasn't won since then.

Nebraska (0-1, 0-1 Big Ten) was looking for a bounce-back season with a revamped offense following a 3-9 season, but the team and its many fans who made the trip are headed home bitterly disappointed. Quarterback Casey Thompson had a big game in his Huskers debut, throwing for 355 yards, but a fourth-quarter mistake was costly. Cameron Mitchell intercepted Thompson's pass and returned it almost 40 yards. Six plays later, Evan Hull ran it in from the 4 to give the Wildcats a 31-28 lead. Hull finished with 22 carries for 119 yards. Xander Mueller picked off a pass that bounced off receiver Wyatt Liewer's hands with 1:27 to play and the Wildcats sealed the win. - Northwestern/AP College Football

Perhaps the most NFL-ready player on the field, Northwestern left tackle Peter Skoronski is a returning all-Big Ten selection. Skoronski is one of four starters back along the Wildcats' offensive line, with right guard being the only position in flux. Garrett Nelson, Ochaun Mathis and Caleb Tannor all have their sights set on a big year filled with sacks and tackles for losses. Whichever group wins out in this battle will make life tough for the opposition. - Omaha World Herald

For all the struggles Northwestern's passing offense went through last season, they would have multiplied tenfold if Peter Skoronski hadn't excelled as a blindside protector. That statement should hold true this year. The 'Cats don't have a proven quarterback, and the receiving core has to compensate for the loss of Stephon Robinson Jr. That leaves Skoronski - a projected All-American and NFL first-round draft pick - as Northwestern's most talented player contributing to its aerial attack. The star left tackle's impact only starts there. With Cam Porter now healthy, the running back room will be more explosive than it was in 2021. Skoronski's prowess as a lead blocker on the outside could help the 'Cats break off more big plays and move the chains with greater efficiency. He is the only lineman on the team versatile enough to substantially benefit every play. - InsideNU.com

Cam Mitchell made a significant jump in playing time in 2021 compared to his previous two years at Northwestern. Tasked with filling the gap in pass coverage left by now-Cleveland Brown Greg Newsome II, Mitchell finished the season with 37 solo tackles and six assisted with five passes defended. And, as his recent appearance at Big Ten Media days would suggest, expectations for the junior this season are even higher.

With the loss of Brandon Joseph in the secondary who settled in with the second most solo tackles and four passes defended in 2021, the pressure is on the entire Sky Team, corners and safeties, to find a way to improve from last season with a new identity. Now, with two coaches between the group, Matt MacPherson for DBs and Ryan Smith for corners specifically, it feels like there is a shift beginning in Jim O'Neil's defense with Cam Mitchell, A.J. Hampton and Coco Azema leading the way. - InsideNU.com

Sophomore quarterback Evan Prater and senior quarterback Ben Bryant are expected to battle through fall camp for the opportunity to replace Ridder as the Bearcats' starter when they open the season Sept. 3 at Arkansas (3:30 p.m. on ESPN). Fickell said he will do everything he can over the next five weeks to put both Prater and Bryant in the best position to succeed. "It will be as much of a battle as it can possibly be," Fickell said. "You can't go live. You can't put quarterbacks live. It's just not something you do now. But knowing we've got five returning starters up front on the offensive line and a defensive line that's going to be the anchors to what it is that we do, we'll have an opportunity to really challenge the rest. Challenge the quarterbacks, challenge the back end of our defense, because there's a lot of new guys. It's not that it's going to be different, but I think we can try to script it and put those guys in some positions where hopefully we can do a better job of truly evaluating them and what they can do for the entire team." - Cincinnati Enquirer

2022 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD CANDIDATE: Evan Hull (Sr.), Northwestern,...In an attempt at accuracy in accounting, Northwestern listed running back Evan Hull (5-11, 210) with 2019 as his "First Year" and 2020 as his "redshirt first year," then 2021 as a redshirt sophomore and calls this season his junior year.   Cincinnati Bearcats coach Luke Fickell has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2022 Dodd Trophy, presented annually to the nation's top college football coach. The Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Peach Bowl on Tuesday announced the list that includes 20 FBS coaches. The Dodd Trophy celebrates the head coach of a team that enjoys success on the field, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity - the three pillars of legendary coach Bobby Dodd's coaching philosophy.

Fickell, who is entering his sixth season at the helm of the Cincinnati program, won the 2021 Dodd Trophy after leading the Bearcats to a 13-1 record, a second straight American Athletic Conference championship and a spot in the College Football Playoff. Fickell received the trophy before Cincinnati's spring game in April. The 48-year-old coach collected seven other national coach of the year honors last season, including The Home Depot National Coach of the Year, Paul "Bear" Bryant Coach of the Year, the Stallings Award, the Eddie Robinson Award, as well as accolades from the American Football Coaches Association, Walter Camp Foundation and Sporting News. - Cincinnati Enquirer
