Army is getting an early look at its quarterback future, though certainly not in the circumstances the team wants. With its top three signal callers on the disabled list, head coach Jeff Monken called on two replacements to run the offense against Texas San Antonio on Saturday: freshman Cade Ballard and sophomore Tyhier Tyler. Monken told both players earlier in the week to expect to split duties. Ballard was given the starting nod. His only Army varsity appearance was a final-play call in the season-opening win over Middle Tennessee. He had been running the scout team as recently as last weekend.

But Ballard brought an impressive resume into his first college start. He was a two-time state MVP and two-time state champion for Greeneville, Tenn. His high school record was 30-0, he passed for 12,062 yards and had a hand in 183 touchdowns. You can now make him 31-0. "So he's now 31-0 as a starter, which is incredible," Monken said. "He is just a winner. He's a tough kid and really handled the team and the ball so well." Ballard led Army's opening drive to a score, made easy by Anthony Adkins' 66-yard touchdown rumble, the longest run play of the season for the Black Knights and for Adkins' career. - Times Herald-Record

Anthony Adkins had a career-best 66-yard touchdown run and finished with 101 yards to lead Army to a 28-16 victory over UTSA on Saturday. Adkins had just eight carries and scored in the first quarter. Army (5-1) then added a touchdown run per quarter each from Jakobi Buchanan, Tyhier Tyler, and freshman quarterback Cade Ballard. Tyler led the Black Knights with 19 carries and had 95 yards rushing. Tyler's 37-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter stretched the lead to 21-10. Buchanan had 10 carries for 40 yards and a 5-yard score. Ballard carried the ball three times and had his first career touchdown run, a 5-yarder in the fourth. - AP College Football

Junior punter Zach Harding was named to the watch list for the Ray Guy Award, it was announced today by the Augusta Sports Council. The Ray Guy Award, which is named for college football's premier punter, honors the nation's best collegiate punter. Harding, a Phil Steele Preseason All-Independent First Team selection, currently ranks fifth nationally with a 47.5 yards-per-punt average. After the Black Knights didn't attempt a punt in the first game of the season vs. Middle Tennessee, he has punted 15 times for a total of 713 total yards (47.5 ypp), with a long of 60 at Cincinnati. He has put three inside the 20-yard line so far on the season and has seven of 50 yards or longer. As a sophomore in 2019 he appeared in nine games, averaging a program-record 48.2 yards per punt as he pinned opponents inside the 20 yard line seven times and had eight points of 50+ yards. For his career he has appeared in 13 games and has punted 36 times for 1,725 yards, an average of 47.9 yards per punt. He has seen 10 of his punts downed inside the 20 and 15 of 50 yards or longer. - Army Football

Sophomore Jemel Jones ran for a score and threw for another and Army defeated The Citadel 14-9 on Saturday for the Black Knights' sixth straight home win. Jones finished a 14-play, 62-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown run near the end of the third quarter for a 14-3 lead. Just before halftime, he threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Reikan Donaldson for a 7-3 Black Knights (4-1) advantage with 2:57 before halftime. On the Bulldogs' (0-4) following drive, Brandon Rainey completed a 50-yard pass to Raleigh Webb to put the ball at Army's 29-yard line. On the following play, however, Cedrick Cunningham Jr. intercepted Rainey at the 3-yard line to end the threat. The Bulldogs tried to make a game of it when Jay Smith picked off Jones and returned the ball 18 yards to Army's 2-yard line. Sophomore quarterback Jemel Jones was named an honorable mention selection for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Trophy Player of the Week award after his performance on Saturday vs. Abilene Christian. The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Trophy, which is given to the best offensive player from the state of Texas, honors a top athletic performance from a student-athlete out of Texas weekly. Jones, a native of The Colony, Texas, was outstanding after starting quarterback Christian Anderson went down with an injury, leading the team to a 55-23 victory over ACU. A product of The Colony High School, he led the team in rushing yards with 138 yards on 14 carries, scoring a team-high two touchdowns. He also added 52 yards passing on a 4-for-7 performance. Army quarterback Jemel Jones had 14 carries for a career-high 138 yards rushing and two touchdowns and added a 33-yard TD pass as the Black Knights cruised to a 55-23 win over Abilene Christian on Saturday. Jones was 4-of-7 passing for 52 yards. Freshman Tyrell Robinson added a season-high 126 yards rushing on seven carries for Army (3-1) and Anthony Adkins ran for 70 yards and two scores. The Black Knights bounced back after a 24-10 loss at No. 14 Cincinnati on Sept. 26 and won their fifth consecutive home game. Abilene Christian (0-2) was stopped on fourth down on each of its first two drives and went three-and-out on its third before Army recovered an onside kick and Jakobi Buchanan's 3-yard TD run made it 23-0 with 10:15 left in the second quarter. - AP College Football

Sophomore fullback Jakobi Buchanan has been deemed "the human wrecking ball," but the big man showed patience and solid foot skills on his long touchdown runs of 25 and 40 yards on Saturday. In both cases, Buchanan was briefly held up at the line of scrimmage before finding his way through holes for his big runs. "We just practice, practice and practice," Buchanan said. "Sometimes the hole is not going to be there right away. But just the way the line moves and...the blocks come together, you know, the hole is eventually going to be there...You just have to wait for the hole." - Times Herald-Record

Christian Anderson and Jakobi Buchanan ran for two touchdowns apiece and Army beat Louisiana-Monroe 37-7 on Saturday. Sandon McCoy, who scored three touchdowns in a season-opening 42-0 victory over Middle Tennessee State last weekend, added the 14th of his career with a 2-yard dive for a 14-0 first-quarter lead. Anderson scored on a 5-yard keeper for the game's first score. He added a 6-yarder for a 24-7 third-quarter lead. Buchanan scored on a 25-yard run in the third quarter and added a 40-yarder in the fourth quarter. The Warhawks' lone TD came on Colby Suits' 6-yard pass to Malik Jackson with 2:12 left in the first half before Landon Salyers made it a 17-7 halftime lead with a 40-yard field with two seconds left. The Black Knights (1-1) rushed for 436 yards, led by Buchanan with 106 yards on 11 carries. Anderson had 95 on 21 carries. Suits thew for 148 yards and a score. Following a career performance against Middle Tennessee State last Saturday, Cedrick Cunningham Jr. was selected as the Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week by the Maxwell Football Club on Thursday, Sept. 10. The award recognizes the nation's top defensive player. Cunningham registered seven tackles, two of which went for a loss of yardage. His two stops behind the line of scrimmage against the Blue Raiders doubled his career output entering the game. He also notched his first career forced fumble and sack in Army's 42-0 home-opening win over Middle Tennessee State. The Cassatt, S.C., native was a crucial part of the defensive unit that pitched Army's first shutout at Michie Stadium since the 2011 season. Sandon McCoy ran for three first-half touchdowns and Army opened its season with a 42-0 victory over Middle Tennessee on Saturday. McCoy scored on runs of 1, 2 and 4 yards, twice finishing drives that began after Blue Raiders turnovers. Quarterback Christian Anderson added a 24-yard run up the middle in the third quarter and Anthony Adkins' 22-yard run completed a 99-yard drive for the Black Knights' final score in the fourth quarter. Army's longest touchdown came on a 43-yard interception return by Jon Rhattigan. Army's triple-option offense rushed for 340 yards on an average of 5.5 yards per carry on 62 attempts. The shutout was the first since a 21-0 win at Air Force in 2017 and the largest shutout win over an FBS team since a 47-0 victory over Wake Forest in 1963. - AP College Football

2020 WUERFFEL TROPHY PRESEASON WATCH LIST: Joe Stephenson, Army, senior, linebacker,...Stephenson volunteers for the In My Bag Tour Foundation. At its last event, he helped serve over 500 students and 200 teachers in the Danville, Va., and Philadelphia areas with pre-packaged book bags and gifts of appreciation. The foundation raised over $10,000 in a three-month span in 2019. As a community liaison, Stephenson assists with volunteer communications and event logistics. At the Academy, Stephenson is a Dean's List student and a member of the Christian Athlete Society while currently serving as both the Military Development Officer and the Diversity Officer for his company. The Brodnax, Va., native is a senior linebacker with 25 games under his belt. Stephenson has totaled 19 tackles in his career including eight solo stops. Army West Point football players Cole Christiansen, Elijah Riley and Connor Slomka each received offers as undrafted free agents from National Football League teams on Saturday night. Christiansen received an offer from the Los Angeles Chargers, Riley's came from the Philadelphia Eagles while the Jacksonville Jaguars extended one to Slomka. The trio are the first to receive offers under the NFL undrafted free agent program since the secretary of defense endorsed a policy in November making it possible for exceptionally talented athletes who have graduated from a military service academy to pursue employment as professional sports athletes following graduation.

Once approved, they will be permitted to delay their commissioning and subsequent service obligation to pursue employment as professional sports athletes. "We are extremely proud of Cole, Elijah and Connor," Mike Buddie, Army West Point Director of Athletics, said. "They have all earned this opportunity through their hard work and determination while representing the Corps of Cadets on the gridiron. After spending 47 months training to serve our country, I am thrilled for them to have this opportunity to continue their playing careers, and am convinced this will only make them better officers when that time comes." - Pointer View

Senior quarterback Kelvin Hopkins Jr. rushed for 208 yards and a touchdown, Connor Slomka scored thrice on short runs, and Army's triple option overwhelmed VMI 47-6 on Saturday at Michie Stadium. Kell Walker added a touchdown on a 59-yard scamper off a pretty pitch to the outside from Hopkins midway through the third quarter as Army (5-6) won its second straight after snapping a four-game losing streak last week against UMass. It was Army's second win this season over a team from the Championship Subdivision. VMI (4-7) was coming off a 60-21 loss to No. 9 Furman, failing to score in the second half. The Keydets were blanked again after intermission as Army outscored VMI 19-0 in the third to take control. The Black Knights finished with 594 yards rushing, 37 yards shy of matching the school record set against Colgate of the FCS in 1989. The Keydets stayed close until Walker's score, which capped a 10-play drive that started at the Army 1. Not even a 31-point victory was enough to put a smile on Army coach Jeff Monken's face. Army rushed for six touchdowns and a season-high 403 yards on Saturday, but had to overcome some sloppy play that included two lost fumbles and seven penalties to beat struggling Morgan State 52-21. The Bears, who compete in the Championship Subdivision, haven't won a nonconference road game since a 28-3 win over Bowie State five years ago, but they led the Black Knights 14-7 early in the game before fading. "I didn't think that was up to our standards," Monken said. "That's as much to do with me as any individual player. Good enough to win the game, not good enough against everyone else we play. We've got to do better."

Artice Hobbs IV scored twice and Connor Slomka rushed for a career-high 110 yards and another score to pace the Army ground game. But Morgan State (0-3), which started the season with two bad road losses - 46-3 to Bowling Green and 63-12 to FCS power James Madison -under new coach Tyrone Wheatley, stunned Army with two straight scores in the first quarter after the Black Knights had gained a 7-0 lead on a 9-yard run by Hobbs. DeAndre Harris hit Manasseh Bailey with a 69-yard touchdown pass down the middle on a third-and-14 play to tie the game with 5:32 left in the first. Four plays later, Army quarterback Jabari Laws was blindsided and fumbled and Malachi Washington recovered for the Bears. Army moved on quickly from an emotional loss, even if the sting of failing to pull off a monumental upset still lingers. The Black Knights set several milestones on offense in rolling past the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners 31-13 Saturday at the Alamodome. Army's triple-option offense continued to confound after nearly upsetting then seventh-ranked Michigan on Sept. 7 before falling 24-21 in double overtime in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Senior defensive back Elijah Riley said the Black Knights moved on from that loss, but not everyone was able to forget so easily. "I'm glad they forgot about it right away," Army coach Jeff Monkey said. "I didn't forget about that; I don't know if I'll ever forget about that. So, good for them. Losses like that are going to linger. They're hard, they are hard to overcome. When you've got the No. 7 team beat in their stadium, it's going to linger and it's hard to come back from." Aiding Army's recovery was a late switch at quarterback against UTSA. Jabari Laws started in place of an injured Kevin Hokins Jr. and the Black Knights responded with their most prolific output of the season.
