  05/05/21 - Jon RhattiganSr/2021, Army, 6-0, 236 (DS#29 ILB) + More +

Over the course of one year, Jon Rhattigan went from being an unheralded backup linebacker for Army to the team's most valuable player and an undrafted free agent for the NFL's Seattle Seahawks. Rhattigan, from Naperville, Illinois, was signed by the Seahawks following the conclusion of the NFL Draft on Saturday evening. A February SB Nation report had Rhattigan in discussions with the Seahawks, Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles prior to the draft. Rhattigan's ability to train with the Seahawks will have to be approved by The Pentagon. Changes in recent years have allowed service academy graduates to train and play with pro teams, putting a pause on their required commitments to the active military. - Times Herald-Record

  12/21/20 - Sandon McCoySr/2021, Army, 5-10, 215 (DS#10 FB) + More +

After two straight emotion-packed weekends, Army coach Jeff Monken and his Black Knights had more drama on Monday - but with a happy ending. The Black Knights shut out archrival Navy at Michie Stadium just over a week ago and finished an undefeated eight-game home season on Saturday by beating Air Force to win the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy. But the good feelings from that accomplishment took a big hit Sunday night when Monken had to tell his players their bowl game was canceled. The letdown didn't last long. The Liberty Bowl extended an invitation Monday night and Army is slated to play West Virginia on Dec. 31 in Memphis, Tennessee, filling the spot left by Tennessee's withdrawal because of COVID-19 test results. - AP College Football

  12/19/20 - Jakobi BuchananrSr/2024, Army, 6-0, 255 (DS#999 FB) + More +

Jakobi Buchanan scored on a 1-yard run with 73 seconds left, and Army rallied past Air Force 10-7 on Saturday to win the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy for the ninth time. With time winding in the fourth quarter, Army drove 80 yards to the Air Force 1 and Buchanan delivered. Arik Smith's interception on a deflected pass sealed it for the Black Knights. Quinn Maretzki kicked a 24-yard field goal early in the second quarter for Army's other points.

The Falcons beat Army 17-13 at home last year, stopping the Black Knights on fourth down at the goal line to escape. Haaziq Daniels found Kyle Patterson for a 10-yard touchdown in the final seconds of the third quarter to give Air Force a 7-3 lead. The Falcons (3-3) began the season with a dominant 40-7 win over Navy and were poised to capture their record 21st CIC. But after falling behind, Army's Jabari Moore stopped the Falcons' attempt to seal it with an interception at the goal line to set up the winning drive for the Black Knights, who have won nine straight at home. - AP College Football

  12/12/20 - Tyhier TylerrSr/2023, Army, 5-08, 183 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Tyhier Tyler scored on a 4-yard run early in the fourth quarter, the Army defense stoned Navy with a goal-line stand in the third, and the Black Knights beat their archrival 15-0 on Saturday at fog-shrouded Michie Stadium. It was the first meeting between the teams at West Point since 1943. The game was moved to Michie Stadium from its customary site in Philadelphia because COVID-19 regulations in Pennsylvania would not have allowed the Corps of Cadets and Brigade of Midshipmen to attend. The Black Knights (8-2) posted their first shutout in the series since a 27-0 victory in 1969 and have won four of five against Navy (3-7). They had lost all three games played previously at West Point to the Midshipmen, including 13-0 in 1943 during World War II. Navy still leads the series 61-53-7. - AP College Football

Amadeo West, a senior defensive end on the Army West Point football team, was named a semifinalist for the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year. He is one of 20 semifinalists for the award. The award, presented by Albertsons and Tom Thumb, is the first college football honor to focus primarily on a player's leadership, both on and off the field. Leadership is a term synonymous with Jason Witten, who, in addition to becoming one of the best tight ends in the history of the sport, has served as one of football's most prominent role models during his 16-year pro career. - Army Football

  10/25/20 - Jon RhattiganSr/2021, Army, 6-0, 236 (DS#29 ILB) + More +

Army got exactly what it needed heading into a midseason bye week and huge football clash with Air Force looming in two weeks. Still utilizing two inexperienced quarterbacks, Army (6-1) did not turn the ball over and posted seven scoring drives in a 49-3 victory over Mercer (0-2) before roughly 4,000 cadets at Michie Stadium. The defense posted three takeaways and held a foe under 20 points for the sixth time, all wins. The last time Army's defense held four foes to single-digit scoring was 1968. "I think overall our team played great today," said senior linebacker Jon Rhattigan, who had seven tackles and a 50-yard interception return.

It was Army's sixth consecutive home win dating back to last season and 11th in a row over a Football Championship Subdivision team. "If we hadn't won or if we played particularly poorly and still won, there would be a lot of frustration," head coach Jeff Monken said. "It's just nice to win and feel like we played pretty well, put it behind us and move on to the next one." The next game is the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy matchup with Air Force on Nov. 7 at Michie Stadium. Army must win (and beat Navy on Dec. 12, also at West Point) in order to reclaim the trophy last won in 2017 and 2018. The Falcons already beat Navy and can take home the trophy for the first time since 2016 with a win over the Black Knights. - Times Herald-Record

  10/24/20 - Sandon McCoySr/2021, Army, 5-10, 215 (DS#10 FB) + More +

Army has accepted a bid to play in the Independence Bowl, becoming the first team in the country to gain a spot in the postseason. West Point announced the bid after the Black Knights beat Mercer on Saturday to improve to 6-1. Army is slated to face a Pac-12 Conference foe in the Shreveport, Louisiana bowl game. The Black Knights are 3-0 in three previous bowl appearances under seventh-year head coach Jeff Monken. "We deeply appreciate the role they play in our national landscape and will roll out the red carpet for them for their trip to Shreveport," Independence Bowl Chairman Frank Auer said in a statement. The Pac-12 begins its truncated season on Nov. 7. The date of the Independence Bowl will be announced later. Army has made one previous Independence Bowl appearance, a 32-29 loss to the Auburn Tigers in 1996. The Black Knights are off to their best start since they began that season with nine straight wins. - AP College Football
