  10/25/20 - ILB Jon RhattiganSr/2021, Army

Army got exactly what it needed heading into a midseason bye week and huge football clash with Air Force looming in two weeks. Still utilizing two inexperienced quarterbacks, Army (6-1) did not turn the ball over and posted seven scoring drives in a 49-3 victory over Mercer (0-2) before roughly 4,000 cadets at Michie Stadium. The defense posted three takeaways and held a foe under 20 points for the sixth time, all wins. The last time Army's defense held four foes to single-digit scoring was 1968. "I think overall our team played great today," said senior linebacker Jon Rhattigan, who had seven tackles and a 50-yard interception return.

It was Army's sixth consecutive home win dating back to last season and 11th in a row over a Football Championship Subdivision team. "If we hadn't won or if we played particularly poorly and still won, there would be a lot of frustration," head coach Jeff Monken said. "It's just nice to win and feel like we played pretty well, put it behind us and move on to the next one." The next game is the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy matchup with Air Force on Nov. 7 at Michie Stadium. Army must win (and beat Navy on Dec. 12, also at West Point) in order to reclaim the trophy last won in 2017 and 2018. The Falcons already beat Navy and can take home the trophy for the first time since 2016 with a win over the Black Knights. - Times Herald-Record
