  08/12/19 - Joshua McMillonrSr/2021, Alabama, 6-3, 236 (DS#26 ILB) + More +

One of Alabama's first-team linebackers is likely out for the year due to an injury suffered during the Crimson Tide's scrimmage on Saturday. Redshirt senior inside linebacker Josh McMillon sustained a knee injury during the scrimmage that's likely a season-ending injury, according to sources. It seems like there's a small chance McMillon could return late in the season, per sources. It's a blow to an inside linebacker group that was already a question mark. - AL.com

The 6-foot-7 specimen of a defensive lineman had early first-round draft projections assuming an early exit after the 2018 season. Last fall just didn't yield the results expected after a breakout sophomore season. It was Quinnen Williams who came from nowhere to dominate the defensive front en route to the No. 3 overall pick in the draft. So, he's back for that fourth Tuscaloosa preseason after opting against the draft in January.

With it, Davis is the unquestioned veteran leader on a defensive line that lost starters Williams and Isaiah Buggs. "Sometimes it feels weird," Davis said. "Feels like you're the oldest. The thing is, sometimes I feel like I'm old but to them, they think I'm young. So, I've got to keep myself feeling young and play young to keep myself just moving better. I don't really like to feel old." "Just I feel like it wasn't me last year," Davis said. "I feel like this is my chance to prove myself to everybody like my team that I can do it and I can be that role model, that leader I was supposed to have been. That's about it." - Birmingham News

The NCAA will move forward without the use of standardized player availability reports this college football season. The organization's Board of Governors made the decision on Wednesday, stating that player availability reporting "is not a viable option at this time." It was part of a larger discussion centered on the impact of legalized sports gambling and its impact on amateur athletics and the NCAA. The availability reports would have been a similar concept as injury reports used by professional leagues like the NFL or NBA.

The group also reaffirmed its support of current legislation that forbids coaches and athletes from wagering on sporting events or providing information to others who are involved in sports wagering. "The ad hoc committee gathered thorough feedback from conference commissioners, athletics administrators, athletic trainers and student-athletes across all three divisions about potential player availability reporting," said Michael Drake, chair of the Board of Governors following the group's meeting Tuesday in Indianapolis. "The membership has significant concerns about the purpose, parameters, enforcement and effectiveness of a player availability reporting model." - Orlando Sentinel

Tracking/Logging/Cross checking CFB Player injuries, especially important for the yearly Draft pool is a full-time job within many other categories of information gathering. It's VERY vital information for Team Scouting Director's and Area Scouts gather it up best they can until the end of season reports, which the NCAA does help. By then though, it's more vital to the Draft process and the gambling issues they claim play no part, really. There are still folks who help track it pretty well (Injury Portal style) including the teams, but the information is very fluid.

The Tua Tagovailoa-Steve Sarkisian connection goes back to a different time in a much different place than Tuscaloosa. Then head coach at USC, the current Alabama offensive coordinator was in Hawaii watching a young high school talent whizzing the football around with his left arm. Meeting with reporters at Alabama's annual media day, Sarkisian recalled the first time he saw the 2018 Heisman runner-up. "I'll never forget," Sarkisian said Saturday, "he was in high school, the 10th grade, and it was a really windy, windy day in Hawaii, and he was cutting the wind. I mean it was extremely accurate, not only stood out to me and still does to this day."

Over the next few years, that kid became one of the most explosive passers in college football. And after recruiting him to Los Angeles, Sarkisian now gets a shot at leading Tagovailoa deep in SEC country. The progress is evident while the strong-armed throws remain. "Now after watching him play college football, studying the tape, being attentive in spring ball, he's a very instinctive player," Sarkisian said. "He has a natural feel for passing the football and the passing game. Just on that note, I think those two things stand out to me - his ability to stay accurate regardless of the elements and his quick release, and then the instincts he plays with." - Birmingham News

  08/04/19 - Landon DickersonrSr/2021, Alabama, 6-6, 333 (DS#2 C) + More +

Up until the final hours before Alabama begins preseason practice, the Crimson Tide's roster was being amended. The latest addition to the roll is offensive lineman Landon Dickerson, the graduate transfer from Florida State. Dickerson, a guard and tackle, committed to Alabama in June and will wear the same number he donned during his run with the Seminoles — 69. Once a major prospect, Dickerson became the first true freshman offensive lineman to start a home opener for Florida State since 1982. He then suffered a torn ACL in 2016 and missed all but six games the next two years as his body repeatedly betrayed him. - AL.com

So are former Crimson Tide All-American linebacker Barry Krauss, who was a first-round NFL draft pick in 1979, and Mike Bernier, who was Alabama's punter the final eight games of last season. With Carter and Amos graduating, the Tide will have six players on this year's team who have already graduated. - Birmingham News

The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced the names of forty "players to watch" for its 2019 Player of the Year award, the nation's fourth-oldest individual college football accolade. Ten players on the 2019 watch list, including the 2018 Player of the Year Tua Tagovailoa (Alabama) have previously earned Walter Camp All-America honors. Tagovailoa was a First Team All-American last season along with his teammate, wide receiver Jordy Jeudy, and Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor.

Defensive back Grant Delpit (LSU) was also a First Team All-America honoree last season. There are 30 offensive players (16 quarterbacks, seven running backs and seven receivers/tight ends) on the preseason watch list along with 10 from the defensive side of the ball. In all, 35 schools and 11 conferences (including independents) are represented on the list with Alabama having four players on the list. Defending national champion Clemson has three players on the watch list, while Oregon has two. - The Walter Camp Football Foundation
