Under general manager Mike Mayock, the Las Vegas Raiders have marched to the beat of their own drummer in the NFL Draft. The selection of Clemson defensive end Clelin Ferrell with the fourth choice in the 2019 draft came under immediate fire, and second-guessing came with the addition of Ohio State cornerback Damon Arnette at No. 19 last year, too. After Mayock chose Alabama offensive tackle Alex Leatherwood with the 17th choice in the NFL Draft on Thursday night, he said he "knew it would be controversial. Completely understand that." "When we made the pick, we had the TVs on," Mayock said, "and, obviously, I forget which group it was, but they were saying, 'They could have had him in the second round and blah, blah, blah,' so I understand that the fan base is going to listen to that and the fan base is going to question it."

The Detroit Lions made the first pick of an offensive tackle on Thursday night by choosing Oregon's Penei Sewell at No. 7. Northwestern's Rashawn Slater went next at No. 13 to the Los Angeles Chargers. The Raiders took Leatherwood over Virginia Tech's Christian Darrisaw, who went to the Minnesota Vikings at No. 23, as well as Oklahoma State's Teven Jenkins, whom nfl.com rated as a better pro prospect than Leatherwood. Leatherwood said he didn't buy into the second-round tag placed on him by so many talent evaluators and mock drafters. "By no means was I surprised," Leatherwood said about being the 17th selection. "I'm not the type of dude to fall into the media hype, the mock drafts and all that good stuff, so I just did what I could do well, you know what I mean? Did the best that I could do and trusted the process, and it all went great. - Birmingham News

The Reese's Senior Bowl has added a big in-state name to the roster for 2021. Alabama offensive tackle Alex Leatherwood has accepted an invitation to play in the Senior Bowl, which takes place Jan. 30 at Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile. Game officials made the announcement via Twitter on Thursday: The 6-foot-6, 312-pound Leatherwood, a Pensacola native, was a first-team All-American and won the Outland Trophy as the top offensive lineman in the country in 2020. A starter at left tackle in 2019 and 2020 after starting at right guard in 2018, he is projected as a likely first-round pick in April's NFL draft. - Birmingham News

Alabama's offensive line was announced Monday as the winner of the 2020 Joe Moore Award. The award is given by the Foundation for Teamwork to the nation's best offensive line. Notre Dame and Texas A&M's lines were the other finalists. It is named for Joe Moore, the longtime Notre Dame, Temple and Pittsburgh offensive line coach who died in 2003.

It is the second time Alabama's offensive line, coached by Kyle Flood, has been honored with the award. It was the inaugural recipient in 2015, and now is the first school to win it twice. Left tackle Alex Leatherwood and center Landon Dickerson have been named to the first teams of four official All-America lists and need only first-team recognition on the Walter Camp list to be considered unanimous All-Americans. - Birmingham News

2020 OUTLAND TROPHY SEMIFINALIST: Alex Leatherwood, OT, Alabama (6-6, 312, Sr., Pensacola, Fla.): At times the Crimson Tide offense is so fast and fluid you can miss watching the guys up front that make it so. Leatherwood has been a standout in protection as well as blocking, allowing quarterback Mac Jones to rank in the top 10 nationally of nearly every passing statistic. The Crimson Tide has scored 35 or more points in 22 consecutive games, the longest streak in major-college football history. Four of Alabama's five previous Outland winners have been offensive tackles - Cam Robinson (2016), Barrett Jones (2011), Andre Smith (2008) and Chris Samuels (1999) - as well as five of the Tide's last seven finalists. - Greater Omaha Sports Committee

The SEC announced on Tuesday that it has canceled its spring meetings that were scheduled for the last week of May in Destin, Florida. Concerns over the spread of coronavirus forced the decision, the conference said. The league will "determine alternate methods for holding meetings important to conference operations and explore opportunities to recognize award winners who [were to be] honored at the event," it said in a release. Held in Destin each year since 1985, the meetings produce rule changes for upcoming seasons. Top school officials, athletic administrators as well as football and basketball coaches are in attendance annually. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said during a conference call earlier this month that planning for SEC football media days in Atlanta this July was "full steam ahead" despite the coronavirus outbreak. - Birmingham News

The Southeastern Conference announced its annual football media days will take place July 13-16, returning to the College Football Hall of Fame and Omni Atlanta Hotel at CNN Center, which also hosted the event in 2018. Florida head coach Dan Mullen and select players will be there on Monday, July 13. A more detailed daily schedule with full television information, rotational breakdown and student-athletes attending will be available prior to the event in early July. The SEC Network and ESPN will once again be on site to bring the four-day event to a national audience.
