  10/29/20 - *Jaylen WaddleJr/2021, Alabama, 5-10, 180 (DS#3 WR) + More +

When Tua Tagovailoa suffered a season-ending hip fracture last November, the severity of the injury immediately raised questions about whether he would declare for the NFL draft, how far he might fall in the draft and if how he would be financially protected. It does not appear similar questions will follow Jaylen Waddle's fractured ankle that will end his season and, likely, his Alabama career. Nick Saban said Monday that Waddle's surgery was "very, very successful" and his long-term prognosis is "very good." Saban compared the surgery to the one performed on former Alabama running backs Derrick Henry in 2013 and Kenyan Drake in 2014, both of whom returned to continue onto their successful playing careers.

Waddle's injury is not likely to cause much change to his draft stock, assuming he leaves Alabama early to enter the 2021 draft. Two high-ranking NFL personnel executives told AL.com this week they do not expect Waddle's placement in the draft to be impacted, barring an unforeseen complication in his recovery. Both considered Waddle to be a first-round pick, with one executive expecting to see him taken within the first 15 or 20 selections. That evaluation has not changed much since the summer, when Waddle was viewed as a player who could have opted out of the 2020 season and still been taken high in the draft. Waddle's most desirable trait, his speed, has been on film for years and has long placed him on the NFL's radar. - Birmingham News

Mac Jones still threw for 387 yards, completed his first 11 passes and finished 25-for-31. Najee Harris caught six passes out of the backfield for 61 yards while Metchie continued his breakout season. His seven-catch, 151-yard afternoon marked his second triple-digit performance as a favorite Jones downfield option. The Canadian averages 23.8 yards per catch with 21 receptions in his first season starting. "He's a strong receiver he's got good quickness he's got really strong hands," Saban said. "I think he's a smart guy. He really plays the game well, pays attention to detail runs good routes. And he's fast. And he's quick out of a break."

Metchie said word of Waddle's injury reached the sideline a few drives into the game but they had to dial in on the job at hand. "I think we did good," Metchie said. "It's part of the sport. Guys get banged up and it's the next-man-up mentality in fighting through it as a unit and as a team." Waddle is no small presence to replace. He had 100-yard performances in each of the four games played before Saturday with an explosive burst that made him among the most enticing draft-eligible players of the 2020 season. His 557 receiving yards still lead the team despite not catching a ball Saturday. - Birmingham News

  10/28/20 - Najee HarrisSr/2021, Alabama, 6-1, 232 (DS#1 RB) + More +

Alabama running back Najee Harris has a rushing touchdown in 12 straight games; the only SEC players to have longer streaks in the last 15 years are Tim Tebow and Derrick Henry, according to ESPN Stats & Info. Harris scored his third touchdown of the game late in the third quarter against Tennessee to give Alabama a 42-10 lead; it was his 34th career rushing touchdown at UA. It elevates him to a tie for sixth in school history and increases his likelihood of joining Henry and Mark Ingram with the record, if not breaking it. Harris was boosted by five touchdowns against Ole Miss, a performance that jumped him from outside the top 10 to tied for eighth with Eddie Lacy. - Montgomery Advertiser

  10/28/20 - Charlie ScottrSr/2022, Alabama, 6-1, 195 (DS#999 P) + More +

A graduate transfer with a familiar last name made his Alabama debut Saturday in Knoxville. Charlie Scott, the brother of former Alabama star JK Scott, got his first start as the punter against Tennessee. The former Air Force specialist was called upon just twice as the Crimson Tide offense remained hot in a 48-17 win over the Vols. The younger Scott replaced freshman Sam Johnson who punted 10 times for a 35.4-yard average in the first four games. The two Scott punts in Knoxville came on short fields and both ended with fair catches inside the 20. "Well I thought Charlie did a good job. Charlie punts the ball high. He's a little more consistent the last couple of weeks. He got here late. He wasn't here all summer he wasn't here for part of camp. So he's just sort of getting back into his rhythm, but I thought he did a nice job for us." The first punt, a 41-yarder, was caught at the Alabama 9-yard line while his second traveled 28 yards to the 18. Saban likes the speed with which Scott punts the ball. "We just weren't getting the kind of consistency in performance that we needed," Saban said. "Now there's a lot of things that go with punting. And it's how fast you get it off. It's how much hang time you have, and can you put it in the right spots where I have the best opportunity to cover. And I think we got that done tonight." - Birmingham News

  10/27/20 - *Mac JonesrJr/2021, Alabama, 6-3, 217 (DS#3 QB) + More +

UA's passing attack is losing the SEC's previous leader in receiving yards, Jaylen Waddle, to his season-ending ankle injury, but replaced him capably with Slade Bolden, who caught six passes for 94 yards. Jones enters the game as the national leader in yards per attempt and completion percentage among those with more than one game and one of just 13 quarterbacks with at least 12 touchdown passes this season. He is also looking into his toughest challenge to date. "Mac's shown a lot of maturity in the way that he's played so far this year," UA coach Nick Saban said. "I think the more experience he gets, the more confidence that he has. We left some plays on the field, I think, on third down in the game that we certainly need to improve on and work on because that's been something that's been a really positive thing for us. But Mac's been able to stay steady. He stays in a good place, keeps his eyes in the right place, keeps making good choices and decisions. I think that's when he's most productive, and he's done that on a very consistent basis all year long." - Montgomery Advertiser

  10/27/20 - *Jaylen WaddleJr/2021, Alabama, 5-10, 180 (DS#3 WR) + More +

Nick Saban confirmed Monday that wide receiver Jaylen Waddle underwent surgery Saturday night in Birmingham after fracturing his ankle earlier that day on the opening kickoff of a game at Tennessee. Saban called the surgery "very, very successful" and said Waddle's long-term prognosis is "very good." Added Saban: "He's been in the hospital since. He's been pretty groggy. He was going to come and see me today, but he just got back and I'm probably gonna talk to him later today or tomorrow." Although Saban told CBS at halftime of the game that Waddle is out for the season, but said after the game that Waddle would "probably" be out for the season if he needed surgery. On Monday, Saban did not specifically rule out Waddle's return or leave the door open for him to come back this season. "It's a difficult timetable to know when a guy can come back from something like this," Saban said.

"That's something that's going to be ongoing. Probably six to eight weeks before he can even start real heavy rehab, then relative to your position, how fast you can come back after that is really, really up in the air." Saban compared the surgery to the one former Alabama running backs Derrick Henry and Kenyan Drake underwent before continuing their playing careers. Without Waddle, Alabama's top trio at wide receiver is expected to be DeVonta Smith, John Metchie and Slade Bolden. "You can't replace a guy like Jaylen Waddle in terms of what his ability is," Saban said Monday. "It's no different than losing Allen Iverson if you're a guy who scores 30, 40 points a game. He's that kind of impact player." - Birmingham News

No. 2 Alabama lost wide receiver Jaylen Waddle for the rest of the season on the opening kickoff. That was about the only thing that didn't go the Crimson Tide's way Saturday. Mac Jones threw for 387 yards and ran for a touchdown, and Najee Harris ran for three more TDs as Alabama routed Tennessee 48-17 for the 14th straight win in this rivalry. The Crimson Tide (5-0) outgained Tennessee 587-302. But playing the Vols proved costly for Alabama a second straight season. A year ago, Tua Tagovailoa hurt an ankle in the second quarter and missed the next game against Arkansas. On Saturday, Waddle rolled his right ankle as he was tackled on the opening kickoff. He was taken by cart to the locker room, and coach Nick Saban said at halftime that Waddle will be out the rest of the year and that the junior likely will need surgery. Tennessee (2-3) forced Alabama to punt on its opening drive. That was as close as the Vols would get in losing their seventh straight in this series in Neyland Stadium. Jones got the Tide moving on the second drive, distributing the ball to different receivers on the first four plays. Harris appeared to fumble on his first carry on the drive but was ruled down before the ball came out, which was upheld on review. Harris scored on the next play. Jones capped the next drive with a 1-yard plunge and a 14-0 lead. Alabama led 28-10 at halftime. - AP College/Alabama Football

Alabama coach Nick Saban said junior wide receiver Jaylen Waddle is out for the rest of the season after breaking his right ankle on the opening kickoff Saturday against Tennessee. "It's a shame because the guy's a great player," Saban told CBS at halftime. "It's exciting for college football to see a guy playing like that. I hate it that he gets hurt on a play like that. You're not supposed to bring the ball out when you're that deep in the end zone, but he's a great player, so you've got to let him use his judgment." Waddle took the opening kickoff and got out to the Alabama 15 when tackled by Kenneth George Jr. Waddle's right foot got caught between the grass and George's body and turned.

Waddle has been one of the nation's top punt returners the past two years and has seldom had the ball kicked his way this year. He had 733 yards on punt returns in his career, ranking sixth in Alabama history. Waddle currently leads all Crimson Tide returners averaging 19.3 yards per punt return in his career, nearly six years better than second place. Waddle opened this season with at least 120 yards receiving in each of the first four games and led Alabama with 557 yards on just 25 catches. Waddle was averaging 22.3 yards per catch and had four touchdowns. - AP College Football

  10/23/20 - DeVonta SmithSr/2021, Alabama, 6-0, 170 (DS#2 WR) + More +

If we're talking math, 50% chances aren't always worth taking on the football field. Throw it up and see what happens? Nah. Alabama receivers aren't thinking about a coin toss when Mac Jones fires one deep through four games. DeVonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle and John Metchie are the main targets in those moments with Smith winning his share of jump balls. "We expect him to make those type of plays," Waddle said. "We don't consider them 50-50 balls when Smitty's the one after it." Smith caught back-of-the-end zone touchdowns in two of the last three weeks on plays that required equal parts concentration, footwork and strength. Both were well defended, he just played it better.

Waddle is known for his ability to climb the ladder and snag some tough passes, too. He started the year with a jump ball at Missouri the led to an early touchdown. What's his take on an acceptable percentage if 50-50 isn't right? "Well for one, our position coach, if you touch it when it's thrown to you, we expect you to catch it," Waddle said. "That's just our mentality in that room. Smitty's just one of the best at it, if not the best, at those types of balls." His fourth-quarter dagger on a 13-yard pass from Jones was just the latest example of connecting the high-point catch with careful footwork. Smith's 38 catches rank second in the SEC behind only Ole Miss' Elijah Moore' 42. He had 13 catches at Ole Miss and 11 against Georgia including the nifty fourth-quarter touchdown. - Birmingham News

Alabama redshirt junior quarterback Mac Jones leads the nation in passing efficiency and is coming off three consecutive 400-yard performances entering this week's game at Tennessee. Kentucky completed more than 81% of its passes during last Saturday's 34-7 humbling of Tennessee inside Neyland Stadium, averaging 8.2 yards per completion. The Volunteers will face the nation's top statistical quarterback this week when No. 2 Alabama arrives along with Mac Jones. The 6-foot-3, 214-pound redshirt junior from Jacksonville, Florida, is completing 78.3% of his passes this season, with many of his attempts not nearly as conservative as what the Wildcats displayed.

Jones is averaging a whopping 16.9 yards per completion, with his 12 touchdown tosses averaging an eye-popping 37.3 yards. "Mac was the scout-team quarterback when I was the defensive coordinator there," Tennessee third-year head coach Jeremy Pruitt said this week. "When you look at how much he's improved in four years, it's really interesting. When he was a scout-team quarterback compared to four years later - it just shows you over time when you're in the same system you can continue to develop. He's really done a nice job doing that. "He came in last year and played well, and he's playing at a really high level right now with a lot of confidence." - Chattanooga Times Free Press

Alabama's win over Georgia was the most-watched college football game of the 2020 season to date and the most-watched program on Saturday on any network, according to a release from CBS Sports. CBS said 9.611 million people watched the Crimson Tide beat Georgia 41-24. It was a 3% increase from what CBS called a comparable event, Notre Dame's game at Georgia last year. The game also earned the highest-rated non-NFL sporting event since the return to live sports in May, earning a 5.3/13 HH rating share. - Montgomery Advertiser

There is no such thing as a foregone conclusion in the wild world of college football, particularly this season in the world of COVID-19 where the unpredictable is predictable. Perceptions could change when the Big Ten and other conferences finally kick off starting this weekend. But for the moment, There's an air of inevitability developing around the notion that Clemson and Alabama are unstoppable forces again destined to square off for the national title and that the Heisman winner will be the quarterback of one of those programs. Clemson's Trevor Lawrence continues to hold the lead in the weekly USA TODAY Network Heisman survey. He tossed five more TD passes last week as the Tigers routed Georgia Tech, though he did throw his first interception of the season. He has 15 scoring passes thus far in 2020 and a total of 1,544 yards.

Alabama's Mac Jones was every bit as impressive in the Crimson Tide's win against Georgia in a top-five showdown. He moved 14 points closer to Lawrence in the survey and added three first-place votes to last week's total. Jones' first pass was picked off, as well, on his first attempt of the game, but he bounced back to add four TDs to his ledger, bringing his season total to 12 with 1,518 yards. Jones' teammate, running back Najee Harris, is also on the radar in fifth place with the most points among non-quarterbacks. - Montgomery Advertiser
