  11/24/20 - *Mac JonesrJr/2021, Alabama, 6-3, 217 (DS#3 QB) + More +

For the 13th straight year, Alabama opened as a favorite to win the Iron Bowl. And the spread for this Saturday's game is one of the widest of the Nick Saban era as the unbeaten Crimson Tide welcomes Auburn to Tuscaloosa. Alabama is a 25-point favorite over Kentucky, according to the opening line released by Circa Sports in Las Vegas. The average spread in the 13 years Alabama's been a favorite is 13.3 points. Alabama was favored by 25.5 points two years ago when Tua Tagovailoa and Co., won 52-21. The biggest spread of the Saban era was 34 points in 2012 when Alabama finished the Gene Chizik era with a 49-0 pounding. - Birmingham News

  11/24/20 - *Mac JonesrJr/2021, Alabama, 6-3, 217 (DS#3 QB) + More +

In case the sting of Mac Jones flipping his commitment from Kentucky to Alabama as a four-star recruit was not enough, he made sure Kentucky fans could feel that pain again with his performance Saturday. Jones, one of the leading contenders for the Heisman Trophy, completed 16 of 24 passes for 230 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. There were plenty of completions to wide-open receivers, but Jones also made a handful of the type of throws into tight coverage that have been missing from the Kentucky passing game for most of the last decade. We will never know if Jones would have developed into the same caliber of quarterback had he stuck with his Kentucky commitment, but the performance offered a telling example of the type of talent still lacking in Kentucky's quarterback room. For all of Terry Wilson's success at UK, he has not been able to elevate the Wildcat passing game. - Courier Journal

Alabama is now a unanimous No. 1 in The Associated Press college football poll, and Northwestern moved up to No. 11 on Sunday for its best ranking in 24 years. For the second straight week, the top eight teams in the poll held their spots. The Crimson Tide received all 62 first-place votes after beating Kentucky 63-3, making Alabama the first unanimous No. 1 this season and the first team to do it in the regular season since 2018. Notre Dame was No. 2, followed by Ohio State, Clemson and Texas A&M. Florida was No. 6, and No. 7 Cincinnati and No. 8 BYU also held their spots.

The rest of the top 10 was No. 9 Miami and Oregon. Northwestern moved up eight spots after beating Wisconsin 17-7 to improve to 5-0. The Badgers slipped eight spots to 18th. The Wildcats were last ranked this highly in 1996. The year after their surprising run to the Rose Bowl, coach Gary Barnett's team reached a high of No. 10. No. 12 Indiana dropped three spots after putting a scare into Ohio State in the Big Ten's other top-25 matchup Saturday. The Buckeyes beat the Hoosiers 42-35 after leading 35-7. - AP College Football

This is the 80th time in the history of the AP poll, which dates back to 1936, there has been a unanimous No. 1. It was a rare occurrence in the early days of the poll, when college football was more regional. From 1936-66, only twice was there a unanimous No. 1. Southern California was a unanimous No. 1 twice during the 1967 season, but not until the 1990s did the unanimous No. 1 become a common occurrence. From 1992, when Alabama finished the season by getting all the first-place votes in the poll, to last season when LSU did the same, the AP Top 25 had a unanimous No. 1 on 67 occasions. The unanimous No. 1 for Alabama is its 22nd overall, most of any school, and its 21st since 2012. - AP College Football

  11/21/20 - DeVonta SmithSr/2021, Alabama, 6-0, 170 (DS#2 WR) + More +

DeVonta Smith caught nine passes for 144 yards and set the Southeastern Conference career record with two more touchdowns in No. 1 Alabama's 63-3 victory over short-handed Kentucky on Saturday. Mac Jones passed for 230 yards and two touchdowns and Najee Harris ran for a pair of scores for the Crimson Tide (7-0 SEC), both in less than three quarters. A slow start turned into a breezy return from a three-week layoff after LSU was forced to call off last week's scheduled game because of COVID-19 troubles. The outmanned Wildcats (3-5) were missing a number of key players because of injuries or coronavirus protocol. They were competitive early on the stat sheet, but it didn't hold up particularly long on the scoreboard.

Smith broke Amari Cooper's SEC and Alabama record with his 32nd touchdown catch, a 10-yarder from Jones in the second quarter. He added an 18-yarder from freshman backup Bryce Young. Jones completed 16 of 24 passes but also was intercepted at the goal line in a rare mistake. Harris had a 42-yard touchdown run and gained 83 yards on 13 carries. Kentucky quarterback Terry Wilson passed for just 120 yards and was benched after throwing an interception that Jordan Battle returned 45 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. Joey Gatewood and Beau Allen couldn't get anything going, either. The Wildcats gained 121 yards in the first quarter and 60 the rest of the way. - Alabama/AP College Football

DeVonta Smith's next receiving touchdown will break Amari Cooper's school and SEC career record of 31; Cooper shares the SEC record with former Florida receiver Chris Doering. The touchdown would also give Smith nine for the season, which would move him into a tie for eighth in single-season school history; Smith's 2019 season, with 14 touchdowns, is tied for second. - Montgomery Advertiser

  11/20/20 - *Jaylen WaddleJr/2021, Alabama, 5-10, 180 (DS#3 WR) + More +

The outlook for injured Alabama star Jaylen Waddle continues to be very good, enough so that Nick Saban confirmed Thursday night that it's possible the preseason All-American wide receiver could return later in the season. The update from Saban came after Waddle got his cast removed earlier in the day, 26 days after he suffered a significant ankle injury vs. Tennessee that was originally labeled as a season-ending injury. "We're very encouraged," Saban said during his weekly radio show. "Everybody thinks he's doing really, really well. He's had a great attitude about it and he's going to work hard and he told me that he wants to try to come back and play, but we're certainly not going to let that happen until he's fully 100 percent healthy." Waddle, a potential 2021 early first-round draft pick, had 24 catches for 557 yards and four touchdowns in the Crimson Tide's first four games before getting hurt on the opening kickoff against Tennessee. - Birmingham News

  11/08/20 - Phidarian MathisrSr/2022, Alabama, 6-4, 310 (DS#7 DT) + More +

Asked about fourth-year junior defensive lineman Phidarian Mathis, Saban said Wednesday, "I think Phil has played really well, he's got his weight down his quickness is better. That's the thing that I think has helped him the most. I think he's playing with a lot more initial quickness, moving better, rushing better, the guy's got a really really good motor. He plays hard all the time and his production has increased with those improvements. I'm really pleased with him; I think he sets a really good example for the young guys so we're pleased with that as well." - Birmingham News

  11/02/20 - Najee HarrisSr/2021, Alabama, 6-1, 232 (DS#1 RB) + More +

Najee Harris may not have scored, but in running for 119 yards, he ran for more than three of the four teams Mississippi State faced prior to Saturday. DeVonta Smith's 203 receiving yards was his highest mark over his last nine games; it was also more than MSU gained as a team. Alabama became the Harris and Smith show in its 41-0 thrashing of the Bulldogs on Saturday. The two carried the load on 38 of UA's 73 plays, a number that could have been higher if not for three possessions taken almost entirely by backup players trying to run out the final minutes. "It seemed like every time he was getting the ball he was running for 10 yards and running it across the field," quarterback Mac Jones said of Harris. Five of Harris' 21 carries (23.8%) went for 10 yards or more, an increase from the season to date with 17 such carries on 103 attempts (16.5%). Harris also added six catches for 36 yards, second on the team in both categories to Smith. - Montgomery Advertiser

  10/31/20 - DeVonta SmithSr/2021, Alabama, 6-0, 170 (DS#2 WR) + More +

Alabama still has DeVonta Smith, another playmaking wide receiver who's awfully hard to defend. Mac Jones threw four touchdown passes to Smith and the wideout had 203 yards receiving as the second-ranked Crimson Tide began life without Jaylen Waddle with a 41-0 victory over Mississippi State on Saturday night without. The Crimson Tide (6-0) had a dominant defensive performance, handing new Bulldogs coach Mike Leach the first shutout of his college career. It was Alabama's first shutout since a 24-0 victory over Mississippi State on Nov. 10, 2018. Smith caught first-quarter touchdowns passes of 35 and 53 yards to help send the Bulldogs (1-4) to their fourth straight loss. Smith took over the starring receiving role in the absence of Waddle, lost to a likely season-ending ankle injury. He made 11 catches and moved into a tie with Amari Cooper for the most career receiving touchdowns with No. 31 early in the fourth. Smith also vaulted over Jerry Jeudy and Calvin Ridley into No. 3 on Alabama's career receiving yards list with 2,868. - Alabama/AP College Football

  10/29/20 - Slade BoldenrJr/2022, Alabama, 5-11, 189 (DS#36 WR) + More +

"Slade's really quick. A lot of guys like Slade become very effective slot kind of players because they're quick out of a break," UA coach Nick Saban said. "They've got good initial quickness, really good hands, very smart and heady in terms of their instincts and their ability to make quick decisions. That's something that fit well for him. I know he played quarterback, he played all over the place in high school. But he's done a good job. He did a good job in the game, and he's one the guys that I was referring to when I said a lot of the guys had to step up." The early returns on that decision are not enough to act on - he had four catches last year, spending most of his time as a Wildcat quarterback - and had no receptions entering the Tennessee game. His six catches for 94 yards against the Volunteers began to validate the decision.

"That's where he belongs. He's a tough matchup for a safety, he's so quick," Hunt said. Few, if any, are able to do exactly what Waddle did: double as the best kick returner in the country and the SEC's leading receiver. Saban is not placing expectations on Bolden relative to what Waddle did before him, but such expectations may not bother him. "I hate what happened to Waddle, but Slade Bolden is going to fill in fine for Alabama," Hunt said. "They're going to fall in love with Slade Bolden: his charisma, personality and work ethic, it's unmatched." - Montgomery Advertiser
