The term "one-and-done" has long been part of college basketball lingo, but it has taken on a different meaning for modern college football. The loosening of the NCAA's transfer portal rules last year made it easier for underclassmen to transfer and play immediately, then enter the NFL draft after one successful season. That was the case when Jameson Williams transferred to Alabama for the 2021 season after two years mostly in the background at Ohio State. Williams flourished in his starting role for the Tide and became a first-round pick in last April's NFL draft, beginning a trend that should continue this year.

Running back Jahmyr Gibbs declared Monday for the 2023 NFL draft after one season at Alabama. The junior's decision came a little more than a year after he transferred from Georgia Tech, where he was a key piece of the Yellow Jackets' offense but felt his skills could be better showcased in Tuscaloosa. Williams was picked No. 12 overall in last year's draft despite an ACL injury, and Gibbs said Monday he has heard feedback placing him in the No. 20-25 overall range of this spring's draft. The decision was not as obvious as the two others announced by Alabama juniors Monday - by quarterback Bryce Young and outside linebacker Will Anderson - but expectations still leaned heavily in favor of Gibbs entering the draft early, with two years of eligibility remaining. "I kind of knew for a little bit," he said. "If we had that sort of year we wanted, then, yeah." - Birmingham News

Each Alabama football player, and any player on any team, has his reasons for playing or not playing in a bowl game. "I think I was always going to play," Gibbs said Tuesday. "Since I've never been in (a bowl game), I wanted the experience." Bowls, even if not playoff games, have been a given at Alabama during coach Nick Saban's tenure. Gibbs transferred to UA ahead of 2022 from Georgia Tech, which hasn't made a bowl game since 2018. So he has a different outlook on postseason games. "I'm very excited," Gibbs said. "I've never been to one, so yeah I'm very excited." This season, Gibbs rushed for 850 yards on 136 carries for seven touchdowns. He also caught 42 passes for 378 yards and three more scores. - Montgomery Advertiser

The praise has been nearly universal surrounding new Alabama back Jahmyr Gibbs. Since transferring from Georgia Tech, it's clear he's the frontrunner to succeed Brian Robinson as the first option from the backfield. It's the versatility that's made him such an interesting piece of the retooled puzzle for Bryce Young and the Crimson Tide offense surrounding him. That should make his choice of NFL influences fairly predictable.

Meeting with reporters in Tuscaloosa for the first time Friday, Gibbs said he likes to model his game after Carolina Panther running back Christian McCaffrey and Aaron Jones of the Green Bay Packers. "That's what the NFL likes," Gibbs said. McCaffrey has a rushing attempt-to-reception ratio of 781:357 since entering the league in 2017. Jones isn't as balanced at 822:183 while Gibbs was 232:60 in his two years with the Yellow Jackets. Robinson, now with the Washington Commanders, caught 35 passes while running the ball 271 times last year with Bill O'Brien calling the plays and Young distributing the ball. Alabama defenders have been complimentary since spring practice and now into August. "He's shifty. He got me yesterday in practice in team run," Alabama defensive lineman DJ Dale said. "I thought I had him to break down. He made me stop my feet. He stopped and kept going and he was gone. He was a very dynamic piece to our offense and I'm glad we got him." - Birmingham News

Deploying a two-back set every so often might be exactly what the Alabama offense needs. Here are a few reasons why. Jahmyr Gibbs' versatility When a running back has scary speed and the ability to catch and run like Gibbs, any offensive coordinator would be wise to find mismatches for him. Linebacker Henry To'oTo'o said he has never guarded a back like Gibbs before. Will Anderson Jr. said Gibbs is like a little wide receiver. "Trying to run with him," Anderson said, "It's different." Gibbs offers a variety of options, from catching the ball out of the backfield and being valuable in the screen game to running between the tackles and working on the perimeter. He finished with 143 carries for 746 yards and four rushing touchdowns to go with 36 receptions for 470 yards and two receiving touchdowns in 2021. - Montgomery Advertiser

Alabama placed 10 players on the 2022 Media Days preseason All-SEC first team, as voted on by members of the media this week in Atlanta. Earning first-team honors on offense for the Crimson Tide were quarterback Bryce Young, running back Jahmyr Gibbs, wide receiver Jermaine Burton and offensive lineman Emil Ekiyor. Linebackers Will Anderson and Henry To'oTo'o and defensive backs Jordan Battle and Eli Ricks were named to the first-team defense. Gibbs actually made the first team twice, also earning a nod as an "all-purpose" back. He was joined among the first-team specialists by Alabama kicker Will Reichard. Georgia was second behind Alabama with six first-team selections. Auburn had two first-team picks, running back Tank Bigsby and defensive lineman Derick Hall. - Birmingham News

Perhaps it's the Jameson Williams effect or maybe Jahmyr Gibbs is just that explosive. But the preseason chatter surrounding this transfer from Georgia Tech would indicate Alabama is expecting a breakout season from the speedy running back. And the Williams comparisons could extend to the big-play capability Gibbs brings not just to the running game but the passing game as well. Gibbs caught 60 passes in his two seasons with the Yellow Jackets that netted 773 yards with five touchdowns. Crimson Tide linebacker Will Anderson flashed a smile when asked about Gibbs on Tuesday. "He's like a little wide receiver sometimes," Anderson said. "When we have to take the wheel routes with him, you really have to get on your horse because he has wheels and he can run. He's dangerous out of the backfield but I love it. It's fun to watch."

The 5-foot-11, 200-pound junior from Dalton, Georgia averaged 5.2 yards a carry playing for a Georgia Tech program that went 6-16 in his two seasons there. Stepping into a primary role this spring, Gibbs was the A-Day MVP thanks mostly to a 75-yard touchdown run. Alabama safety Jordan Battle wasn't on the field for that sample of Gibbs' open-field speed. The secondary veteran, however, is well-acquainted with Gibbs as locker mates who recently traveled together. Their on-field meetings will benefit both down the line. But who wins more? "I think it's 50/50," Battle said. "I stood him up a couple of times. He got me a couple of times but that's the thing about Alabama. You're going to compete every day. You're going to be that competitor every day. You're going to make a play. You're going to miss a play. That's how you learn how to not miss that play in the game." - Birmingham News

Alabama added four players on offense from the transfer portal, and Bryce Young is developing chemistry with the fresh faces. New transfers include offensive lineman Tyler Steen, running back Jahmyr Gibbs and wide receivers Tyler Harrell and Jermaine Burton. Young said he is particularly excited about the addition of Gibbs, who earned three spots on the 2021 All-ACC team with Georgia Tech, to the running back mix. "(Gibbs) is super explosive, super dynamic, and he's really smart," Young said. "He understands the offense really well, even in the short time that he's been here." Young is also working with Burton, who caught 26 catches for 497 yards and five touchdowns for Georgia last season. "It's been a lot of timing that we developed," Young said. "A lot of chemistry (and) work that's going on, (and) it's only going to improve, so I'm really excited." - Montgomery Advertiser

Throughout Alabama football fall practices in 2021, Jameson Williams was seldom discussed without mention of his speed. The Ohio State transfer showed why immediately in the first game. He took a pass 94 yards for a touchdown against Miami. Williams went on to display that elite athleticism throughout the season en route to putting himself in position to be a first round NFL Draft pick at the end of April, even coming off of an ACL tear. His remarkable season, which included an Alabama-record four touchdowns of 70-plus yards, all started with that Miami moment. Jahmyr Gibbs had his own version of that Saturday, and the season hasn't even started yet.

Against a defense that had limited the starting Alabama offense throughout the A-Day game, the Georgia Tech transfer turned on the jets and scampered for a 75-yard rushing touchdown. Making his debut for UA, Gibbs showed exactly why the Crimson Tide added him via the transfer portal this offseason. He brings next-level athleticism that Alabama showed late in the 2021 season it needs for the offense to be able to beat the best defenses in the country. "He's really good at pressing the holes, but he has a great burst to get to top speed quickly in setting up blocks," Alabama coach Nick Saban said. "Very good running back. Very good receiver. Good third-down back. Very good addition." - Montgomery Advertiser

Georgia Tech running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who finished third in the nation in all-purpose yards, announced plans on Monday to enter the transfer portal. Gibbs made the announcement on his Twitter account. "After a long and hard process and talks with my family, I have decided to enter the transfer portal," Gibbs wrote, adding "I have loved my time here at Georgia Tech." Gibbs said he has made "life long friends" with teammates and coaches, including running backs coach Tashard Choice. “Thank y'all for believing in me and showing me nothing but love through the good and bad times." Gibbs also thanked Georgia Tech fans for their support. Gibbs made the announcement two days after Georgia Tech completed a 3-9 season with a 45-0 loss to No. 1 Georgia. Gibbs ran for only 1 yard on two carries before suffering an undisclosed injury that prevented him from returning in the second half. - AP College Football

Georgia Tech running back Jahmyr Gibbs has put on weight and added strength since the end of last season. The gains aren't lost on offensive coordinator Dave Patenaude. "He's got (trapezius muscles) and he's got a chest and he's got triceps and he's got muscles (where) he never thought he had muscles," Patenaude said Monday following the team's third preseason practice. "So we're not afraid to roll him inside the (offensive) tackles at all. Because he's learning how to run with his pads down and pound the ball."

Saturday, Gibbs said he added about 10 pounds from his playing weight last year, putting him now at 201 pounds after playing last season between 190 and 193 pounds. He can bench press 225 pounds 16 times, up from 11. As Patenaude mentioned, the added strength and weight make Gibbs a more viable ball carrier on the inside, which adds to his ability as a threat on the perimeter. A year ago, Gibbs proved himself one of the top running backs in the ACC, finishing fourth in the league in all-purpose yards at 138.3 yards per game. "He's gotten bigger," quarterback Jeff Sims said. "It's really helpful because he can run up between gaps now, and it's dangerous." - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Georgia Tech running back Jahmyr Gibbs was his team's lone selection to the preseason All-ACC team, which was announced Tuesday. Gibbs was named to two spots on the team, as an all-purpose back and a return specialist. Gibbs' 968 all-purpose yards last year as a freshman (460 rushing, 303 receiving and 205 on kickoff returns) were 13th in the ACC. He compiled the total in seven games, while every player ahead of him played either 11 or 12 games. His 138.3 all-purpose yards per-game average ranked fourth in the conference. Gibbs also was named last week to the watch list for the Doak Walker Award, given to the nation's top running back, along with teammate Jordan Mason. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Following Tuesday's spring-practice workout, Smith reported he was at 202 pounds when he weighed himself Monday, up from his playing weight last season of about 182. Gibbs said he was 203 pounds, up from about 192 during the season. "I'm stronger," Gibbs said. "I'm pretty sure I got faster." Presumably, the race to add muscle mass will stop at some point before offensive tackle Jordan Williams is invited into the Gibbs/Smith weigh-in challenge, but it's nonetheless an illustration of the sort of competition that fuels the running backs overseen by position coach Tashard Choice. Gibbs calls it a "friendly competitive vibe," but it's competition all the same. "That's honestly what it is," Smith said. "I mean, we love each other and everything, but at the end of the day, we're all fighting for reps."

Tech has no position more stocked than running back. As a freshman, Gibbs ranked fourth in the ACC in all-purpose yards per game (138.3). Mason, an All-ACC pick in 2019, has run for 90-plus yards nine times in his career. Of players with double-digit carries, Smith led the team with a 6.9 yards-per-carry average, boosted by six runs of 20 yards or more out of 43 carries. It shouldn't be forgotten that Griffin was the No. 2 running-back prospect in Georgia in the 2019 class (247Sports Composite) and has run for 354 yards in two seasons, hardly a shabby total. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

The status of Georgia Tech running back Jahmyr Gibbs remained uncertain Tuesday following what appeared to be a hamstring injury suffered in the Yellow Jackets' win over Duke on Saturday. Asked if either Gibbs or running back Jordan Mason would be available to play Saturday against N.C. State in Raleigh, N.C., coach Geoff Collins sidestepped the question at his weekly news conference. "Jahmyr's a really good player," Collins said with a slight grin. "I'm sure you guys have watched that, as a running back, and catching the ball out of the backfield. He's really good. J.P. Mason, it was really good to see him fully healthy and toting the ball. Really proud of him."

As a practice, Collins does not address injuries unless it is to announce that a player is out for the season. Mason, who has been sharing carries with Gibbs, also came out of the game in the fourth quarter after he was tackled awkwardly and did not return. Dontae Smith finished the game, rushing for 60 yards and two touchdowns on five carries. Mason likewise was effective, with 105 yards on 21 carries. Gibbs left the game in the second quarter after falling untouched at the end of a 42-yard catch-and-run pass reception. Gibbs was on pace for what could have been the most productive game of his career, with 91 rushing yards and 48 receiving yards in less than a half of play. - Atlanta Journal Constitution
