Brock Purdy threw for 307 yards and two touchdowns and the Iowa State defense made a late stand in the closing minutes as the Cyclones knocked off No. 8 Oklahoma State 24-21 on Saturday. Breece Hall scored the go-ahead touchdown with 5:29 left, then the Cyclones' defense forced a three-and-out and stopped the Cowboys on fourth down with 1:09 left. Purdy kneeled twice in victory formation, and fans stormed the field at Jack Trice Stadium as the clock ran out to celebrate Iowa State's first win over a top-10 opponent since 2018. "It was super fun," Cyclones receiver Xavier Hutchinson said of the postgame scene. "It wasn't necessarily why you play the game, but it was (one of) the pros to playing the game." It was the seventh straight Oklahoma State-Iowa State game decided by seven points or less.

Purdy completed 27 of 33 passes, and Hutchinson had a career-best 12 passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns for the Cyclones (5-2, 3-1 Big 12). "I'm just so happy for our team," Purdy said. "It felt good to finish it the right way." Spencer Sanders went 15 for 24 passing for Oklahoma State (6-1, 3-1), finishing with 225 yards and three touchdowns. Iowa State led 17-14 in the fourth quarter and was driving to extended its lead until Malcolm Rodriguez and Jarrick Bernard-Converse stuffed Purdy on a fourth-and-2 run at the Cowboys' 42. Four plays later, Tay Martin caught a 25-yard touchdown pass to put the Cowboys up 21-17. Purdy then led the Cyclones on an 85-yard drive that Hall finished with his short TD run. Hall extended to 19 his Big 12 record for consecutive games with a rushing touchdown. "The character of this game is what we've talked about," Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said. "It's not always going to be pretty. It's not always going to be easy." - Iowa State/AP College Football

Brock Purdy threw four touchdown passes in the first quarter as Iowa State rolled past Big 12 Conference rival Kansas 59-7 on Saturday night. The 28 points was the most ever scored by the Cyclones in an opening period, helping coach Matt Campbell's team improve its record to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the Big 12. And it was the most total points Iowa State has scored in its long-running series with the Jayhawks. Kansas (1-4, 0-2) has not won a conference road game since beating Iowa State 35-33 on Oct. 4, 2008, a string of 55 straight defeats.

Purdy finished 17 of 22 passing for 245 yards, with no interceptions. He now owns a 13-1 home record against Big 12 opponents. Breece Hall added 123 rushing yards on 17 carries and scored two touchdowns. Hall has scored a touchdown in 17 consecutive games, the nation's longest-active streak. Purdy completed his first six attempts, throwing touchdowns to four different receivers. The first came on a 36-yard strike to Xavier Hutchinson. Charlie Kolar caught a 6-yard scoring toss while Joe Scates and Jirehl Brock caught touchdown passes of 44 and 7 yards. Hutchinson finished with seven receptions for 96 yards. - Iowa State/AP College Football

After two lackluster offensive performances in its first two games, No. 14 Iowa State flew into Las Vegas with a sense of urgency. The Cyclones are flying back to Ames, Iowa, with some pep back in their step. Brock Purdy completed 21 of 24 pass attempts for 288 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 14 Iowa State over UNLV 48-3 Saturday night. Purdy, who also rushed for 33 yards, finished with a 229.6 quarterback rating, the third-highest of his career.

It was a major turnaround for Purdy from last week when he was benched during a 27-13 loss to in-state rival Iowa after completing 13 of 27 passes, throwing three interceptions and turning in a career-low 68.9 passer rating. "Coming off last week it was rough, just the way we played, our mindset and everything," Purdy said. "My mindset, big game last week, it hurt. There was no joy, no excitement, no sense of urgency. "Just to get on the road, get away, come out here and just play football with the guys was our main mission and goal. Still some stuff we've got to clean up, but it was a good confidence booster, for sure." Iowa State (2-1) finished with 486 yards of offense and 7.59 yards per play, scoring on eight of its 11 possessions, including six touchdowns. Breece Hall, who rushed for 69 yards in each of Iowa State's first two games, rushed for 70 of his 101 yards in the first quarter to lead the Cyclones' rushing attack. Hall scored two touchdowns. - Iowa State/AP College Football

The most experienced quarterbacks in the Big 12 have already been sidelined this season for very different reasons. Skylar Thompson was off to good start in his sixth year in Kansas State's program before a knee injury that will keep him out indefinitely. Fourth-year Iowa State starter Brock Purdy was benched in the fourth quarter of the biggest home game in program history, though coach Matt Campbell has since reiterated his "great trust" in the quarterback. First-year Texas coach Steve Sarkisian is already shuffling starters, replacing inconsistent redshirt freshman Hudson Card with junior Casey Thompson. All of that is through only two games this season and the unexpected changes at the game's most important position stretch beyond the Big 12. - AP College Football

Iowa State coach Matt Campbell has agreed to a new eight-year contract through 2028 after leading the Cyclones to the Big 12 championship game and a New Year's Six bowl. The school did not release terms of the contract Monday. The Cyclones are coming off their most successful season in school history. They were 9-3 overall and first in the Big 12 at 8-1. They lost to Oklahoma in the conference championship game, then beat Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl and were No. 9 in the final Associated Press Top 25. Iowa State also agreed to provide Campbell a total of $3 million for staff salary increases over the next three years. - AP College Football

Breece Hall ran for 136 yards and two touchdowns, Brock Purdy accounted for two scores and No. 12 Iowa State grinded out a 34-17 victory over No. Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl on Saturday. The Cyclones (9-3, CFP 10) used their ball-control offense to dominate the time of possession and keep Oregon's offense off the field for long stretches to win their first New Year's Six bowl. Hall, an AP All-American, had 34 carries and his ninth 100-yard game this season.

Purdy, who went to high school in nearby Gilbert, threw for 156 yards and a touchdown on 20-of-29 passing, adding a touchdown on the ground. Iowa State had a time of possession advantage of more than 25 minutes. Oregon (4-3, CFP 25) alternated between Tyler Shough and Anthony Brown at quarterback, but couldn't sustain anything on offense and was plagued by numerous mistakes. The Ducks lost two fumbles, an interception and a pooch kick. They also turned it over when a punt hit a blocker’s helmet and had a touchdown wiped out by a penalty. The Cyclones had been building toward this moment. - AP College Football

Brock Purdy went into the locker room a month ago against Baylor after an erratic half of football in which he looked like a quarterback engulfed in chaos. He came back out as the picture of precision. The Iowa State signal-caller has been brilliant since that three-interception first half against the Bears, leading the Cyclones to a perfect finish of the regular season, including Saturday's 42-6 victory over West Virginia at Jack Trice Stadium. The junior now leads his team to its first-ever Big 12 championship game with the Cyclones (8-2, 8-1) finishing the regular season atop the league standings. "To finally be able to get to the game we all dream of playing in is sweet. It's special," Purdy, who was 20 of 23 for 247 yards and three touchdowns, said. "I feel like I'm in a good spot. I trust my teammates. I trust my coaches. I trust in myself and my game.

"Whatever we've got going right now, we're going to keep doing it, keep getting better and see if we can get it done in the Big 12 championship." In the 14 quarters since that Baylor first half, Purdy is 70 of 91 (76.9%) with 10 touchdowns, 903 yards and no interceptions. "He's been incredible," Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said. "We've played like he's played down the stretch. "Maybe one of the great leaders of all-time in the history of this school. He has played as close to what he's capable of playing in every game down the stretch. It's been really fun to watch him. He's the difference. He's really special." - Des Moines Register

2020 DAVEY O'BRIEN AWARD SEMIFINALIST: Brock Purdy, Iowa State, Jr.,...Purdy has continued his assault on the Iowa State record book in his third season as the Cyclone signal-caller, owning or sharing 25 school records in his career (game, season, career). Purdy is the winningest quarterback in school history with 22 overall wins and 19 victories vs. conference opponents. He has an all-time record of 12-1 vs. Big 12 foes in Jack Trice Stadium. The Gilbert, Ariz., native had another fantastic season directing the Cyclone offense to one its most prolific campaigns in school history. Purdy's 66.2 percent completion rate is the third-best season total in school history.

Purdy ranks third in the Big 12 in passing efficiency (145.6), the fourth-best total in school history, and his 17 touchdown passes is third-best in the Big 12. He's tossed a TD pass in nine-straight games, tying for the fourth-best streak in school history. Purdy is 70-of-91 (76.9 pct.) for 903 yards and 10 touchdowns and zero interceptions in his last 14 quarters, helping the Cyclones to a first-place finish in the Big 12 regular-season standings and a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game for the first time in school history. - Iowa State Football

Brock Purdy threw for 247 yards and three touchdowns, and No. 12 Iowa State dominated on defense in a 42-6 rout of West Virginia on Saturday to secure its first appearance in the Big 12 championship game. The Cyclones (8-2, 8-1, No. 9 CFP) were assured a spot in the conference title game Dec. 19 when TCU finished its win over Oklahoma State about the same time as kickoff against the Mountaineers (5-4, 4-4).

Iowa State scored touchdowns on its first three possessions and finished with 483 total yards against the Big 12's top defense while holding West Virginia to 263. Purdy completed 20 of 23 passes and Breece Hall ran 22 times for 97 yards and caught three passes for 56 yards and a TD. West Virginia didn't score until Tyler Sumpter made a 32-yard field goal with 12 minutes left. Reaching the championship game marks another milestone for fifth-year coach Matt Campbell, who took over a program that has not won a football conference title since it was the 1912 co-champion with Nebraska in the old Missouri Valley Conference. - Iowa State/AP College Football

Brock Purdy passed for 236 yards and three touchdowns and No. 17 Iowa State beat Kansas State 45-0 on Saturday for its most lopsided win over the Wildcats in 77 years. Iowa State (6-2) improved to 6-1 in the Big 12, matching the school record for conference wins. The Cyclones hadn't had such a wide winning margin against the Wildcats since they beat them 48-0 in 1943. It was their biggest win over a Big 12 opponent since beating Kansas 45-0 three years ago. Kansas State (4-4, 4-3), which won 11 of the previous 12 meetings, started to unravel after failing to score on an early first-and-goal from the 3.

Purdy completed 10 of his first 12 passes for 156 yards to six receivers and all three of his touchdowns. Breece Hall was Iowa State's leading rusher with 135 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. Hall ran for touchdowns of 33 and 21 yards as the Cyclones pushed the lead to 35-0 before half. Kansas State sputtered with quarterback Will Howard, who completed just three of his first 9 attempts and was replaced after throwing an interception late in the second quarter. Purdy, who finished 16 for 20, also ran seven times for 59 yards. Iowa State outgained the Wildcats 539-149. The Wildcats were missing starting linebackers Justin Hughes and Elijah Sullivan for undisclosed reasons. - Iowa State/AP College Football

Brock Purdy threw three touchdown passes in the second half after throwing three interceptions in the first, and No. 17 Iowa State came from behind to beat Baylor 38-31 Saturday night. The Cyclones (5-2) are 5-1 in conference play for the first time in the program's 128-year history and are first in the Big 12 by a half-game. Breece Hall went over 100 yards rushing for the seventh straight game, finishing with 133 and two touchdowns. He also caught a TD pass. The Cyclones won for the first time since 2012 when committing four turnovers. Baylor scored its first 24 points off Iowa State turnovers, the last coming when Greg Eisworth muffed a punt. Iowa State linebacker Mike Rose sealed the victory when he intercepted Charlie Brewer's pass in the end zone with 57 seconds left. Purdy was intercepted on Iowa State's first two possessions, and Baylor (1-4, 1-4 Big 12) turned them into points.   Brock Purdy first burst on to the scene for Iowa State in leading the Cyclones to victory as a backup against Oklahoma State in Stillwater back in 2018. Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy's admiration for the Iowa State signal-caller has only grown since. "I think they've got a future NFL quarterback," Gundy said Monday. Purdy is coming off his best game of the year, throwing for 302 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 42 yards in a win over Texas Tech. For the season, Purdy is completing 62.4% of his passes and has thrown for 912 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. Gundy's praise for the Cyclones wasn't limited to just Purdy, though. "I think Iowa State is a really good football team," Gundy said. "I think they're well-coached. - Des Moines Register

Brock Purdy was very good. The dandy quarterback made one statement after another throughout this game. He ran with authority, both on designed plays and on scrambles. His passing was as sharp as I've seen it - especially the one he threw that gave the Cyclones a 28-7 lead in the third quarter. With All-American tight end Charlie Kolar lined up on the right side of the line, Purdy dropped back in the pocket as Kolar broke behind the defenders trying to stop him. Purdy has a strong and accurate arm, but that wasn't what this play needed. He lofted a pass beautifully over the defender, that Kolar caught in stride. Touchdown Cyclones, and here's something else I observed on that play: Campbell leaped high to congratulate Purdy as the quarterback jaunted to the sidelines. Campbell did it with such authority, that his headset flew wildly off his head. Purdy completed 32 of 43 passes for 302 yards and two touchdowns. - Des Moines Register

With an offense that did just about whatever it wanted and a defense that was dominant deep into the game, No. 24 Iowa State put away Texas Tech to get out to its best start in Big 12 play in 18 years. Brock Purdy passed for 302 yards and two touchdowns, Breece Hall rushed for 135 yards and two scores, and the Cyclones won 31-15 Saturday for their fifth straight win over the Red Raiders. Iowa State remained tied with Kansas State atop the Big 12 standings and have won three straight to open conference play for the first time since 2002 and only the second time since 1950. It was Iowa State's most complete performance this season, but coach Matt Campbell said there is plenty to clean up before the Cyclones (3-1, 3-0 Big 12) head to No. 10 Oklahoma State after an open date this week. - AP College/Auburn Football

The stats just haven't been there for Brock Purdy. The yardage has been mediocre, the touchdown tally few. The completion percentage, inconsistent. The Iowa State quarterback certainly hasn't been bad - far from it - but he hasn't exactly been great, either. For a player with so much preseason expectation - whether it be a dark horse Heisman candidacy or his place on NFL mock drafts - the numbers haven't been all too impressive. Which maybe doesn't matter a whole lot.

"I'm not a big believer in numbers as it relates to how good a quarterback is," said Sage Rosenfels, one the best quarterbacks in Cyclone history who spent more than a decade in the NFL. "I've been impressed with how Brock's played the first couple games. A lot is asked of him on that football team, not only throwing the ball but also running the ball, and occasionally he makes a big mistake, but when you ask your quarterback to do everything, he is going to make mistakes on occasion. "That's the way the position is."

He was 16 of 35 (45.7 percent) for 145 yards and an interception against Louisiana, which defeated the Cyclones 31-14 in the season opener and shut down the Iowa State offense in the second half. "I don't think he played great in the first game," Rosenfels said, "but, honestly, I don't think he played bad in the first game. There were times there was nobody open. There were times he had pressure. There were times his receiver dropped balls. "So overall, I thought he played pretty dang well in the first game, even if all the numbers didn't end up that way." - Des Moines Register

For the first time since Gary Patterson became head coach of the Horned Frogs (2001), TCU lost its home opener. TCU kept the game close, but was unable to complete its comeback, falling to Iowa State, 37-34. Even though Iowa State came away with the win, there was one mistake made by Iowa State QB Brock Purdy that got people talking. At the beginning of the third quarter, the TCU pass rush got to Purdy and on his way to the ground he attempted to throw the ball away. However, rather than sailing harmlessly out of bounds, the ball landed in the hands of TCU's La'Kendrick Van Zandt who ran the ball in for six. - Dallas Morning News

The offense doesn't work without a high-level Purdy: An early-season loss is nothing new under fifth-year coach Matt Campbell, who is now 6-11 in the season's first month at Iowa State, but this is one that will sting for a team that believes it can compete for a Big 12 title. The Cyclones get two weeks off before their next game, but if Saturday is the baseline, the Cyclones have a way to go. The biggest issue for the Cyclones was an offense that had no punch. It starts with quarterback Purdy, who the Cyclones need to be great but was pretty bad against Louisiana. Iowa State isn't going to win games where he goes 16-35 for 145 yards and an interception. He was without one of his favorite targets and the wide receivers dropped balls, but Purdy was off all day. He's too important to the Cyclones to have that happen. - Des Moines Register

Overrated? Well, you can certainly say that for now, if you want. Iowa State, ranked 25th for now but not for long, played poorly from start to finish during Saturday's 31-14 loss against Louisiana at Jack Trice Stadium. Quarterback Brock Purdy wasn't good. The offensive line was worse. The Cyclones' defense was the best unit on the field, but even that wasn't exactly what anyone would call solid. And those special teams? Insert a crazy, head-shaking emoji here. That aspect of the team has been something else for a while. And on Saturday, before family, cheerleaders and the band inside the stadium - it lived up to that unfortunate reputation. In the first half, it was Louisiana's Chris Smith outrunning everyone during a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to die the game. In the second, it was Eric Garror doing it on an 83-yard punt return into the end zone to give the Ragin' Cajuns a two-score game. One long return is unacceptable on its own. But two in the same game just about cements an 0-1 record.

How bad was this one, special teams aside? Purdy entered the game having thrown 70 passes in a row without an interception, but that streak ended. He overthrew receivers. Receivers dropped passes. I can only recall once when he went deep, when he overthrew Landen Akers around the Louisiana 20-yard line in the third quarter. That's not usually Purdy, but on this occasion, it was. And that topping-off-the-tank touchdown by Louisiana with 10 seconds left? A fitting end to a horrible Iowa State football afternoon. - Des Moines Register

Brock Purdy would wake up every morning, gather with his father and brother and open up the Bible. After two seasons of the intense competition, scrutiny and physical demands of being Iowa State's quarterback, Purdy realized that the pressures had built inside him to a level that was not helpful, and now, when a Florida spring break vacation became a COVID-19 pandemic exile from his home and campus, Purdy set about finding both a reset and a perspective to help bear that burden in the future. So he turned to his faith and his family, pondering questions bigger than how to read a disguised coverage or the best way to dissect a defense.

"I'm a man of faith, so my father, my brother and I every single morning would just read the Word, talk about our faith, understand what our purpose is here in life," Purdy said during a teleconference on Thursday. "Especially with everything going on, for me to be able to step back and understand life's not all about football and sports." Purdy came to Ames as a well-regarded recruit but was third on the depth chart in 2019 before injury and ineffectiveness at the quarterback position put him on the field against Oklahoma State that October. Since then, he's thrown for 5,695 yards and 43 touchdowns while completing 66.3 percent of his passes and throwing just 14 interceptions to become a Heisman Trophy contender and first-round NFL draft prospect. - Des Moines Register

Football is about wins, and Purdy needs eight as a starter to become the school's winningest quarterback. When that happens, he'll be at the summit of Iowa State's quarterback Mount Rushmore. Statistics are just one form of measuring. Winning is the ultimate. In this case, Purdy could be the all-time winner before his senior season. "You're going now into your junior year, and I think this is a great time to watch a guy like Brock begin to really flourish," coach Matt Campbell said. "He's ahead of the curve for what he's done - and for what he's had to do for us."

Ahead of the curve? Purdy already owns or shares 21 Iowa State game, season and career records. Career records easily within reach this season include touchdown passes (he needs four) and rushing touchdowns (needs five.) That would bring his impressive number of career marks to five - with a senior season still to go. "He has that mentality of taking the program and moving forward, and it was like he had it as soon as he stepped on campus. It was weird," former lineman Bryce Meeker said last month. "He can lead better than probably anybody I've ever met. It's unique." - Des Moines Register

After losing hugely productive running back David Montgomery and wide receiver Hakeem Butler to the NFL after the 2018 season, the big question for Iowa State's offense was whether quarterback Brock Purdy's success would carry over. He showed last season not only that it would, but that he should be a darkhorse Heisman contender. He completed 65 percent of his passes for nearly 4,000 yards along with 27 touchdowns against nine interceptions. The Cyclones faltered down the stretch of the season but Purdy - with a true freshman running back and without truly dynamic options on the outside - kept them in Big 12 contention throughout much of the season. If the Cyclones are going to build on the success of the first four years of coach Matt Campbell's tenure, it's likely going to include significant contributions from Purdy, who has emerged as a potential first-round NFL draft pick. - News Gazette Tribune

Iowa State football coach Matt Campbell has high hopes for Brock Purdy, Breece Hall and Charlie Kolar Des Moines Register When college athletics emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic, it could be an entirely new world. From the logistical issues of social distancing to the financial impacts of a stressed economy, college athletics hasn't seen upheaval on this scale in generations. There are also more granular changes afoot, developments that would otherwise be the leading headlines in any normal spring. "Put it on the pile of challenges right now," Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard said in a phone interview with the Ames Tribune earlier this week. "There are two ways of looking at it: You probably couldn't pick a worse time to put that challenge into the mix, but then you might not have been able to find a better time, because if we're dealing with new stuff, might as well deal with it all at the same time."

The NCAA is poised to pass legislation that will allow student-athletes to profit off their name, image and likeness for the first time. That means endorsements like appearances, social media posts and sponsorships. How that legislation is shaped remains to be seen. There have been a number of proposals that would curb the opportunities or levels of financial compensation student athletes-could receive. That conversation will be robust over the next months as the NCAA makes decisions. "If it's truly market-based," Pollard said, "then let the market determine it." - Ames Tribune

Iowa State and coach Matt Campbell have agreed on a one-year contract extension through 2025. The Cyclones announced Tuesday that Campbell has been locked up for the next six seasons, ending speculation he would be a candidate for any number of job openings. Terms were not disclosed. Iowa State, picked third in the Big 12 preseason poll, finished the regular season at 7-5 -- though three of those losses came to ranked opponents by just four combined points. "I greatly appreciate Dr. (Wendy) Wintersteen's and (Iowa State athletic director) Jamie's (Pollard) proactive approach to extending my contract," Campbell said.

"My staff and I will be on the road this week actively recruiting the next class of Cyclones and it is important for recruits and their families to understand my commitment to Iowa State." Iowa State and Campbell agreed to a six-year, $22.5 million contract in 2017 and extended that deal by a year last December. Campbell has led the Cyclones to three straight winning seasons for the first time in over four decades, prompting rumors that he might be poised to leave Ames for a more prestigious program. The speculation could potentially hurt recruiting, with the first signing day of this cycle coming in two weeks. - AP College Football

Brock Purdy threw for 372 yards and four TDs and Iowa State rallied to beat Kansas 41-31 on Saturday and clinch its third straight winning season. La'Michael Pettway had 96 yards receiving and two touchdowns for the Cyclones (7-4, 5-3 Big 12), who've now complied three consecutive winning years just twice in the modern era. Iowa State, under coach Earle Bruce, won eight games each in 1976, 1977 and 1978 before Bruce bolted for Ohio State. But the Cyclones nearly blew it against the league's last-place team as a 24-point favorite.

Kansas (3-8, 1-7) scored two touchdowns in just 77 seconds late in the third quarter, the second coming after Purdy threw an interception, to jump ahead 24-21. Purdy responded with a 24-yard TD pass to Hall and a five-yard touchdown run with 5:10 left to put Iowa State back on top 34-31. After stopping Kansas on fourth down at the Iowa State 37, Purdy found Sean Shaw on 4th and goal from the four to seal the win with 1:09 to go.   Connor Assalley kicked a 36-yard field goal as time expired and Iowa State knocked off 22nd-ranked Texas 23-21 on Saturday to snap a two-game losing streak. Brock Purdy had 354 yards passing and two TDs for the Cyclones (6-4, 4-3 Big 12). They beat the Longhorns (6-4, 4-3) for just the third time in 17 tries despite blowing a 13-point lead. Brayden Narveson missed an apparent 42-yard field goal with 2:12 to go, but Texas was called for being offside and Iowa State was awarded a first down by inches.

The Cyclones - who have lost twice by a point in 2019 -- elected to play for the field goal. Assalley rewarded coach Matt Campbell's faith in him by knocking the winner down the middle. Sam Ehlinger gave Texas a 21-20 lead with a brilliant 7-yard TD pass to Malcom Epps on fourth down with 5:37 to go. But the Cyclones stuffed the Longhorns on their next possession, and Purdy took Iowa State 63 yards in three minutes to set up Assalley's kick.   Brock Purdy and the Iowa State Cyclones have been on quite a roll since late in the game that got away in their other trip to Texas. Purdy threw for 378 yards and three touchdowns, freshman Breece Hall ran 75 yards for the first of his two scores and Iowa State took a big lead early in a 34-24 victory against Texas Tech on Saturday. Purdy had 277 yards and all three of his scoring tosses for a 20-0 lead early in the second quarter, with two TDs to tight end Charlie Kolar, as the Cyclones (5-2, 3-1 Big 12) won their third straight game since losing at Baylor.

Iowa State was down 20-0 in that trip to Waco when Purdy engineered three fourth-quarter touchdowns for a one-point lead before the Bears drove to a field goal and a 23-21 win. The Cyclones responded with comfortable wins over TCU (49-24) and West Virginia (38-14). "We lost our way a little bit in terms of the joy of playing football early in the season," coach Matt Campbell said. "Somewhere along down 20-0 in Waco, we found our joy of playing football again. We'll have to keep plugging away, and that's hard." The Red Raiders (3-4, 1-3) extended their longest losing streak in the series with Iowa State to four, dropping their second in a row this season since beating Oklahoma State for the best victory so far under first-year coach Matt Wells. Purdy was 15 of 17 and had the ball again in the second quarter with the 20-point lead when he threw three straight incompletions.   Brock Purdy threw for 247 yards and a pair of TDs and Iowa State overwhelmed TCU 49-24 on Saturday for its first Big 12 win of the season. Purdy also ran for 102 yards and two touchdowns for the Cyclones (3-2, 1-1), who beat the Horned Frogs for just the third time in 11 tries. TCU (3-2, 1-1), down 35-10 after three quarters, got a touchdown run from Darius Anderson and a 22-yard TD grab by Jalen Reagor to make it a 35-24 game with nine minutes left. But Purdy's fourth TD of the day, a 9-yard run, put the Cyclones ahead by 18 with 6:27 left. Purdy finished with at least 300 combined yards for the fourth straight game.

Eyioma Uwazurike's 1-yard scoop and score on a fumble put the Cyclones ahead 14-3 early in the second quarter. Purdy then made it 21-3 on a 25-yard touchdown pass to Charlie Kolar, and his 10-yard TD run put Iowa State up 28-3 early in the third quarter. Freshman Max Duggan got TCU within 28-10 on a short TD pass to Reagor. Iowa State answered by going 75 yards in just five plays, and Johnnie Lang's 3-yard touchdown run pushed the Cyclones back ahead by 25. Duggan was 17 of 25 passing for 219 yards and two TDs for TCU.
