Justin Fields extended Ohio State football's lead as the most prolific source of first-round NFL Draft talent. Fields became the 85th first-round pick in Buckeyes history when the Chicago Bears traded up to select him with the 11th pick in Thursday's fir st round. Ohio State added a little cushion to its all-time lead over USC (82). Fields was the only Buckeye taken in Thursday's opening round in Cleveland. It was the first year since 2015 without multiple OSU players taken in the first round. The second , third and fourth rounds could be full of them, though. The 2019 draft marked the sixth time at least 10 Buckeyes were selected. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Former Ohio State football quarterback Justin Fields has told NFL teams that he is managing the neurological disorder epilepsy, per a report by NFL Network. According to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, doctors believe Fields will outgrow the condition, a s others in his family have. The report said Fields has managed epilepsy with medication and it does not affect his athletic performance. According to the epilepsy foundation, it is the fourth most common neurological disorder. It affects 3.4 million peo ple in the United States and 65 million worldwide. The condition is associated with uncontrollable seizures, however, those can vary in frequency and intensity from person to person. Fields was not known to have suffered any problems due to the con dition during his Ohio State football career. A year ago at this time, Fields was expected to be the first or second quarterback taken in next week's NFL Draft. Now he has fallen to fifth at the position on some draft boards. It is unknown whether his me dical disclosure has affected any teams' evaluation. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

When Justin Fields transferred from Georgia to Ohio State after his freshman season in 2018, he needed to obtain an NCAA waiver in order to play immediately. By the end of this month, all athletes will be able to transfer once with immediate eligibility at their new school. The NCAA's Division I Council formally made the proposal on Thursday. It must be ratified by the Division I Board of Directors at its April 28 meeting. The NCAA has slowly crept towards greater leniency in transfer rules for the past few years. Thursday's proposal fits into a larger movement that includes a push for Name, Image and Likeness revenue opportunities and broader rights and protections for athletes. In the future, fall and winter athletes will be required to declare their intent to transfer in writing by May 1. For 2021 only, a blanket waiver was granted for a July 1 deadline. Exceptions would apply in cases of head coaching changes or canceled scholarships. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Ryan Day does not know where criticisms of Justin Fields' work ethic and passion for the sport originated. The Ohio State head coach does know - and is adamant in expressing - how different those opinions are from the one he formed over two years of work ing with the 2019 Heisman Trophy finalist. Former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky triggered the controversy earlier this week when he tried to explain on the Pat McAfee Show why Fields' draft stock might be dropping. Orlovsky said unnamed NFL decision-maker s referred to Fields as a "last-in, first-guy-out type of quarterback" and questioned his desire to "go be a great quarterback."Day said Fields dedicated himself so much last offseason that OSU strength coach Mickey Marotti said Fields inspired hi m. "And we get here and the preseason gets canceled, the season gets canceled, and he doesn't opt out and go to the NFL Draft," Day said. "I don't know why people have said what they have. I read stuff on my phone and I don't quite understand any of that stuff. Love for football? I mean, there's a lot of guys that opted out. Are they saying the same things about those guys who didn't want to play? "Not only does he not opt out, he fights to get the season back. He has a petition. He goes on national TV and fights to get the season back. Then he comes out and plays and plays really well." - Cleveland Plain Dealer

A lot of Ohio State football fans were likely inclined to turn off the College Football Playoff national championship game loss to Alabama in the third quarter. Turns out a lot of potential viewers never turned the game on in the first place. According t o Sports Media Watch, Monday night's 52-24 Crimson Tide victory was the lowest for any CFP or BCS national championship game. The game averaged 18.65 million viewers on various ESPN networks, per Nielsen's estimates. The previous low for a national champ ionship was USC's victory over Oklahoma in 2005, which drew 21.42 million viewers. The previous six CFP championship games averaged about 27.6 million viewers. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

In what could potentially be his final game as Ohio State football's starting quarterback, Justin Fields didn't play his best game, but he also didn't play his worst in the 52-24 loss to Alabama in the National Championship. Fields completed 17 of 33 pas ses for 194 yards and only one touchdown while running for another 67 yards. Those aren't the eye-popping stats like the win over Clemson in the Sugar Bowl, but they were decent numbers given the way things played out offensively. - Cleveland Plain Deale r

Two of Fields' receivers, Chris Olave and Garre tt Wilson, were tied for fourth with Indiana quarterback Michael Penix Jr. Wilson received a first-place vote, while Olave garnered two second-place votes. Ohio State coach Ryan Day says he expects Justin Fields to play in the College Football Playoff national championship game against Alabama after the quarterback was banged up during the semifinals. Day declined to detail Fields' injury on Monday during a Zoom news conference. "We don't get into specifics on injuries," Day said. "We give our availability report at the end of the week, and that's always been our policy." Day did say that that Fields told the coach "he felt better waking up in the morning than he expected." Justin Fields threw six touchdown passes to outshine Trevor Lawrence and No. 3 Ohio State avenged last season’s painful College Football Playoff loss to Clemson with a 49-28 victory in the Sugar Bowl semifinal Saturday night. The Buckeyes (7-0) head to the CFP title game for the first time since the inaugural playoff to face No. 1 Alabama on Jan. 11 at Hard Rock Stadium in South Florida. Ohio State beat the Crimson Tide in the semifinals on the way to the 2014 national championship. In a matchup of qu arterback prodigies from Georgia, Fields might have given the Jacksonville Jaguars something to think about what do to with that first pick in the NFL draft. Lawrence is the presumptive No. 1, but Fields outplayed him on this night, going 22 for 28 for 3 85 yards. He set a Sugar Bowl record for TD passes and did it playing more than half the game after taking a vicious shot the side that forced him to miss a play and spend time in the medical tent.Lawrence was 33 for 48 for 400 yards and three tot al touchdowns in what is expected to be the junior’s final college game. His final pass was intercepted, but Clemson (10-2) went 34-2 in his starts and won a national title when he was a freshman. The third meeting between Clemson and Ohio State in the playoff, and fourth bowl matchup since the 2013 season, was a game the Buckeyes had been pointing toward ever since a 29-23 loss to Tigers in the Fiesta Bowl last year. - AP College Football

Citing a rising number of COVID-19 cases in its program, Michigan canceled its annual showdown with Ohio State on Tuesday as college football lurches toward the end of the season without one of its cornerstone rivalry games. The season-ending grudge matc h known as "The Game" won't be played for the first time in 102 years. "The number of positive tests has continued to trend in an upward direction over the last seven days," Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said. “We have not been cleared to par ticipate in practice at this time. Unfortunately, we will not be able to field a team due to COVID-19 positives and the associated quarantining required of close contact individuals. This decision is disappointing for our team and coaches but their healt h and safety is paramount, and it will always come first in our decision-making." The third-ranked Buckeyes played through what coach Ryan Day called a “mini outbreak" last Saturday in a 52-12 win at Michigan State after he was relegated to watching th e game from home. Day is among the coaches and players in the program that tested positive for the coronavirus, leading to Ohio State canceling a game at Illinois. - AP College football

Justin Fields' Ohio State football life is primarily spent in the company of two men. Quarterbacks coach Corey Dennis runs his position group, refining the Heisman Trophy finalist's performance each week in meetings and film study. Head coach Ryan Day, t hough, remains hands-on with Fields' development, occasionally pulling him aside during practices for one-on-one work. Both coaches have been affected by the coronavirus cases that hit the program right before Thanksgiving. Day was confirmed to have test ed positive, and Dennis was among four assistants who did not travel to Saturday's game against Michigan State.Fields kept taking his tests every day, not knowing if he might also have to join his coaches in watching the game from home. "Honestly, I was surprised I didn't get it, but I guess God was looking out for me," Fields said following a 52-12 victory over the Spartans. The absence of Day and Dennis also forced more leadership responsibilities onto Fields' shoulders. He turned to offensive quality control coach Keenan Bailey for support and logistics. Co-offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson oversaw the game plan and called plays Saturday. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Justin Fields threw for two touchdowns and Haskell Garrett scored on an interception to lift No. 3 Ohio State to an easy 52-12 victory over Michigan State on Saturday. The Buckeyes (5-0, 5-0 Big Ten, No. 4 CFP) were able to take the field after a coronav irus-related cancellation the previous weekend. They were without coach Ryan Day and a few other members of the staff. Ohio State also had a list of 23 unavailable players, but none of that seemed to faze the Buckeyes. Fields also ran for two touchdowns, and the Buckeyes led 28-0 at halftime. Now the big question is whether Ohio State's regular-season finale against Michigan next weekend will be played. The Wolverines did not play this weekend for virus-related reasons. The concern for the Buckeyes is t hat they could fall short of the six-game threshold to be eligible for the Big Ten title game. Michigan State (2-4, 2-4) was coming off a win over another undefeated team - Northwestern - but the Spartans were overmatched Saturday. Rocky Lombardi was sha ken up and left the game after being sacked in the second quarter, and by that time, the rout was already on. - Ohio State/AP College Football

Ohio State held on to the fourth spot in the College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday night after having its previous game canceled, landing behind No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 3 Clemson for a second straight week. The selection committee' s top seven teams were unchanged from last week's rankings after the playoff contenders either won comfortably or didn't play because of COVID-19 issues. Texas A&M (6-1) was in fifth and Florida (7-1) sixth.Ohio State (4-0) had to cancel its game at Illinois last week because of a spike in COVID-19 cases in the program. It was the second game of the season the Buckeyes have missed out on. One more cancellation would leave them ineligible for the Big Ten championship game and unable to play more t han six regular-season games. No. 7 Cincinnati (8-0) also had its last game canceled. Ohio State is averaging 45.3 points per game, the best mark in the Big Ten. Its next opponent is the conference's seventh-ranked defense by points allowed. Illinois (2-3) brings that metric and a two-game win streak into its 11 a.m. kickoff on Saturday a t Memorial Stadium with the Buckeyes (4-0). "It'd be mental to me," Illini defensive end Owen Carney said Monday afternoon of his approach to facing the vaunted Ohio State offense. "Hand placement, staying in your gaps, just not trying to go over and bey ond because we're playing Ohio State. It's the little things that got us on this two-game winning streak, and it's the little things that's going to make us successful on the field Saturday."Heading the Buckeyes' seemingly relentless offense is qu arterback Justin Fields. The 6-foot-3, 228-pound junior is a reigning Heisman Trophy finalist and entered the 2020 season as an Associated Press preseason second-team All-American. What has Fields accomplished since receiving the latter accolade? He's me rely completed 90 of his 113 passes - good for a 79.6 percent clip - for 1,208 yards and 13 touchdowns on top of rushing for three more scores. He didn't toss an interception in his first three games, but did throw three in this past Saturday's 42-35 win against then-No. 9 Indiana. "Justin Fields is as good a player as there is in college football," Illinois coach Lovie Smith said. "He so happens to be one of best athletes in college football also, so he can hurt you moving around to buy time to throw t he football. When you have a guy like that leading the offense, it opens up everything." - News Gazette Tribune

Ohio State football announced its full list of champions from Saturday's 42-35 win over Indiana, and the list includes 19 players. While defensive end Jonathon Cooper, tight end Luke Farrell, wide receiver Garrett Wilson and safety Josh Proctor earned pl ayer of the game honors, 15 others were acknowledged as well. For the first time this season, quarterback Justin Fields didn't grade out as a champion after having arguably his worst game as a Buckeye. Fields only completed 18 of his 30 passes for 300 ya rds and two touchdowns along with a season-high 78 yards rushing and a score on 15 carries. But he also matched his career total of interceptions with three and was sacked five times. "I didn't play well at all," Fields said after the game. "I have to im prove. I have to be better. Trailing 35-3 at halftime, Rutgers came out and outscored the Buckeyes 24-14 in the second half. Justin Fields doesn't need the energy of 110,000 people mostly rooting against him in a stadium to put on a show. The Ohio State quarterback is just fine shredding defenses in front of a more intimate gathering. Justin Fields passed for 318 yards and fou r touchdowns, two to Chris Olave, and No. 3 Ohio State beat No. 18 Penn State 38-25 on an eerily quiet Saturday night at what is usually one of the most raucous settings in college football. Jeremy Ruckert also caught a pair of touchdowns, Master Teague II ran for another and the Buckeyes generated 526 yards of offense in their 15th straight Big Ten win and 10th straight on the road against a ranked opponent. Ohio State (2-0) didn't take long to break the game open and hand Penn State (0-2) its first 0- 2 start since 2013. - Ohio State/AP College Football

What's up with Ohio State moving past Notre Dame after the Fighting Irish had their most impressive victory of the season, against Pittsburgh? Remember, the Buckeyes were No. 2 in the preseason and a close second to No. 1 Clemson. When the Big Ten postpo ned its fall season, Ohio State and the rest of the conference's teams became ineligible for inclusion in the rankings. Then the Big Ten decided to play in the fall after all and those teams became eligible again. But some voters decided they would wait until teams played before being considered for inclusion. That held back the Buckeyes and some other Big Ten teams for a few weeks. Now that all the voters are including Ohio State, Wisconsin, Michigan, et al., those teams got an extra boost this week. W isconsin moved up five spots to No. 9, appearing on every ballot for the first time since returning to the rankings three polls ago. No. 13 Michigan also moved up five spots, though the Wolverines got a bounce from an impressive victory at Minnesota. - A P College Football

Justin Fields completed 20 of 21 passes for two touchdowns and ran for another, Master Teague III rushed for a pair of scores and Ohio State rolled over Nebraska 52-17 Saturday on the opening day of the Big Ten's pandemic-delayed season. Fields, a Heisma n Trophy finalist last season, completed his first 12 passes and threw for 276 yards. He ran for another 52 - including a stunning 17-yard third-quarter touchdown scramble around the left side that saw him spin past a defender into the end zone. The Ohio State defense took most of the first half to figure out a way to contain quarterback Adrian Martinez, who marched the Huskers down for a touchdown in the opening 2 minutes of the game. Nebraska (0-1, 0-1 Big Ten) tied the score at 14 in the second quart er, but an Ohio State (1-0, 1-0 Big Ten) field goal, a defensive stop and Teague's second TD run gave the Buckeyes a 24-14 lead at the half. Then came Fields' nifty touchdown run and a 55-yard scoop and score by Buckeyes cornerback Sevyn Banks, and Ohio State had it under control. - Ohio State/AP College Football

The Big Ten Council of Presidents and Chancellors (COP/C) adopted significant medical protocols including daily antigen testing, enhanced cardiac screening and an enhanced data-driven approach when making decisions about practice/competition. The COP/C v oted unanimously to resume the football season starting the weekend of October 23-24, 2020. The decision was based on information presented by the Big Ten Return to Competition Task Force, a working group that was established by the COP/C and Commissione r Kevin Warren to ensure a collaborative and transparent process. The Big Ten will require student-athletes, coaches, trainers and other individuals that are on the field for all practices and games to undergo daily antigen testing. Test results mu st be completed and recorded prior to each practice or game. Student-athletes who test positive for the coronavirus through point of contact (POC) daily testing would require a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test to confirm the result of the POC test. - Big Ten Football

Ohio State's athletic department expects to lose out on $130.3 million in revenues following the cancellation of the fall sports season by the Big Ten Conference. The official projection from the school was included among newly published materials and ag enda items for a board of trustees meeting scheduled for Thursday. The university's operating budget for the current 2021 fiscal year is up for approval. OSU attributed the sharp drop in income for the athletic department to losses of ticket sales, media rights fees and other conference-related revenues distributions stemming from a fall season. - Columbus Dispatch

The NCAA Division I Council has recommended several eligibility adjustments for athletes in football and other fall sports whose seasons have been or still might be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. According to an announcement by the NCAA late Wednesda y, the D1 Council recommended that fall sports athletes get an additional year of eligibility and an additional year in which to complete their eligibility - neither of which will count against roster limits for 2021-22. In order to take effect, the chan ges must be approved by the NCAA Board of Governors when it meets later this week. The Council had already ruled that athletes who opt out of fall sports or have their seasons cut short get an additional year of eligibility - provided that they participa te in 50% or less of their team's games. Those who opt out must also remain on scholarship. - Birmingham News

Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields started a petition requesting that the Big Ten Conference reconsider the decision to cancel the fall sports season and allow football teams to make their own choice as to whether they will play or not during the COVID -19 pandemic. Fields, who is a preseason Heisman favorite, said he and many other players want to have a season and believe that the safety protocols that have been established are sufficient enough to mitigate the spread of the virus and keep players, c oaches and staff safe. Within just four hours the petition has garnered more than 100,000 signatures. - ABC TV5 News Cleveland

A group of Ohio State football players' parents Saturday joined parents of players at Iowa in calling for the Big Ten to overturn its decision not to play this fall because of the pandemic. Meanwhile, Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley said nine Sooners tested positive for COVID-19 after he gave his players a week break from team activities. The Football Parents at Ohio State posted on social media a letter to Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren, calling for the reinstatement of the 10-game schedule the confere nce unveiled six days before it postponed football until spring. "We believe that the protocols put in place by Ohio State Athletics has provided an extremely safe environment for our players to prepare for the season," the letter said. The letter also a sked for the release of all medical data and information the Big Ten used to make its decision, a meeting with Warren for senior players and their parents, and to permit athletes who want to play to sign a COVID-19 liability waiver. - AP College Football

The Big Ten Conference announced the postponement of the 2020-21 fall sports season, including all regular-season contests and Big Ten Championships and Tournaments, due to ongoing health and safety concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. In making it s decision, which was based on multiple factors, the Big Ten Conference relied on the medical advice and counsel of the Big Ten Task Force for Emerging Infectious Diseases and the Big Ten Sports Medicine Committee. "Our primary responsibility is to make the best possible decisions in the interest of our students, faculty and staff," said Morton Schapiro, Chair of the Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors and Northwestern University President."The mental and physical health and welfare of our student-athletes has been at the center of every decision we have made regarding the ability to proceed forward," said Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren. "As time progressed and after hours of discussion with our Big Ten Task Force for Emerging Infectiou s Diseases and the Big Ten Sports Medicine Committee, it became abundantly clear that there was too much uncertainty regarding potential medical risks to allow our student-athletes to compete this fall." - The Big Ten Conference

President Donald Trump joined a U.S. senator and a number of coaches Monday in the push to save the college football season from a pandemic-forced shutdown. There was speculation that two of the five most powerful conferences - the Big Ten and the Pac-12 - might call off their seasons. Farther east, Old Dominion canceled fall sports and became the first school in the Bowl Subdivison to break from its league in doing so; the rest of Conference USA was going forward with plans to play.A Big Ten spo kesman said no votes had been taken by its presidents and chancellors on fall sports as of Monday afternoon and the powerful Southeastern Conference made clear it was not yet ready to shutter its fall season. "Best advice I've received since COVID-19: Be patient. Take time when making decisions. This is all new & you'll gain better information each day," SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey posted on Twitter. ”Can we play? I don't know. We haven't stopped trying." - AP College Football

Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields recognizes the health and financial motivations that might convince college football stars to opt out of the 2020 season due to the coronavirus. However, the returning Heisman Trophy finalist said that line of thinkin g has not applied to him to this point. Asked Tuesday if he had considered opting out, Fields said, "I see where other guys are coming from, but I haven't necessarily thought about it yet." "Growing up as a kid I've always been a competitor," Fields said on a conference call that introduced him and six teammates as 2020 captains. "I love to play football. Growing up in my family, I never really needed anything. My family provided everything I've needed. So getting to the money as fast as I can is not re ally a priority to me. "Getting with my teammates and grinding every day with coach (Mickey Marotti) in workouts, thats' what I'm cherishing the most right now. Working with them and looking forward to the season, I'm trying to stay as optimistic as poss ible right now." - Cleveland Plain Dealer

We are facing uncertain and unprecedented times, and the health, safety and wellness of our student-athletes, coaches, game officials, and others associated with our sports programs and campuses remain our number one priority. To that end, the Big Ten Co nference announced today that if the Conference is able to participate in fall sports (men's and women's cross country, field hockey, football, men's and women's soccer, and women's volleyball) based on medical advice, it will move to Conference-only sch edules in those sports. Details for these sports will be released at a later date, while decisions on sports not listed above will continue to be evaluated.By limiting competition to other Big Ten institutions, the Conference will have the greates t flexibility to adjust its own operations throughout the season and make quick decisions in real-time based on the most current evolving medical advice and the fluid nature of the pandemic. This decision was made following many thoughtful conversations over several months between the Big Ten Council of Presidents and Chancellors, Directors of Athletics, Conference Office staff, and medical experts including the Big Ten Task Force for Emerging Infectious Diseases and the Big Ten Sports Medicine Committe e. - Big Ten Football

Documents regarding the coronavirus that universities, including Ohio State, have required athletes to sign in order to participate in workouts on campus have drawn scrutiny from Congress. Sens. Richard Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat, and Cory Booker , a New Jersey Democrat, introduced legislation Tuesday aimed at prohibiting the waivers called pledges or risk acknowledgment forms by some schools that could be used by schools as a form of liability protection, according to a news release. Referred to as the College Athlete Pandemic Safety Act, the bill also seeks to ban schools from revoking the scholarships of athletes who do not play for health and safety reasons related to COVID-19 and require schools to inform athletes when a player or staff mem ber tests positive for the virus. In a letter addressed to NCAA President Mark Emmert last week, Blumenthal and Booker referenced a "Buckeye Pledge" that Ohio State's athletes were required to sign before returning to campus to work out earlier thi s month. Football players were first to return to the Woody Hayes Athletic Center and Schumaker Complex for voluntary workouts on June 8, followed by men's and women's basketball players, along with athletes from some other fall sports. - Columbus Dispat ch

Ohio State will play Alabama in a home-and-home series in 2027 and 2028, The Dispatch has learned. The Crimson Tide will come to Ohio Stadium on Sept. 18, 2027. Ohio State will go to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to play Sept. 9, 2028, in Bryant-Denny Stadium. Th e visiting team will receive a $1 million payment for both games. If a team backs out of the games, the fee will be $3 million to the other school. Both provisions are unusual for a game involving elite opponents. "The reason why that is that high is the desired execution of this series," Ohio State deputy athletic director Diana Sabau said. "Absolutely, 100 percent, both teams want to make this happen."The series will be the first regular-season games between the schools since they met in the Ki ckoff Classic on Aug. 27, 1986, at the Meadowlands in New Jersey. The teams have never played on each other's campus. Ohio State and Alabama have played four times, all at neutral sites. Alabama won the Kickoff Classic as well as the 1978 Sugar Bowl and 1995 Florida Citrus Bowl. - Columbus Dispatch

Ohio State's plan to re-open its facilities to athletes on June 8 seems like a positive first step on the long road to the return from the COVID-19 shutdown. The NCAA's Division I council reportedly cleared the way for that step Wednesday. Yahoo's Pete T hamel reported the council voted to allow voluntary workouts after the completion of its current moratorium on team activities, which runs through May 31. However, Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith also believes allowing football players to return to campus is the safest option for those players' health. Ohio State athletic facilities have been closed to players since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic."We feel that the facilities we have, with the protocols we can put in place relative to symptom checks and cleanliness and all those types of things - is the best protective environment," Smith said. "A lot of health clubs and workout places, spas and gyms, do an excellent job. Some young people are not in environments with access to those facilities. "We have access to the state-of-the-art equipment, we have medical people, (athletic) trainers, and we want to continue to make sure they're in the safest environment possible. We feel we can provide education, resources - some of them don't have access compared to where they are." Smith said Ohio State will vote for an extension of the Big Ten's team activities band through June 30, but is in favor of allowing voluntary, non-organized workouts. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

After crunching the numbers, Blake Lawrence is certain that Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields could become a rich man before he becomes a richer man in the NFL. It's a moot point, really, because Fields likely will be out of college and playing in the NFL by the time the NCAA institutes name, image and likeness (NIL) rules at the beginning of the 2021-22 academic year. Still, Fields serves as a model for what future famous college athletes can expect to make from endorsements, personal appearances, s ocial media participation and businesses they develop. Lawrence, CEO and co-founder of Opendorse, a Nebraska company that helps athletes calculate their value, estimates that if NIL were operating today Fields could make at least $250,000 annually on soc ial media posts alone, not counting compensation from autograph and memorabilia shows. Lawrence grabbed a calculator during an interview with The Dispatch and quickly determined Fields' market value."At Ohio State, which is one of the top five spo rts sponsorship markets in college athletics, there are high-dollar sponsors who support Ohio State every year," Lawrence said. "And 10 are spending a million or more a year. Those type of sponsors have discretionary income to invest in an annual campaig n with someone like Justin." Fields could expect half of those 10 to hire him to promote their product or business by posting once a quarter via his Instagram and Twitter accounts, which have 391,000 and 131,000 followers. Do the math - $11,000 per spons ored Instagram post and $1,500 per Twitter post, according to Lawrence - and the money would collect without the QB breaking a sweat. - Columbus Dispatch

Seven times in the last 50 years have quarterbacks been the first two picks in the NFL Draft. Bet on it happening again in Cleveland in 2021. It should be the final part of the second chapter of the Justin Fields-Trevor Lawrence quarterback battle, and t he first part of the third chapter. The top two high school recruits in the Class of 2018 after playing high school football just miles apart from each other in Georgia (Chapter 1), Ohio State's Fields and Clemson's Lawrence enter the 2020 college footba ll season as the two clear favorites for the Heisman Trophy, with both their teams among the favorites to win the national title (Chapter 2).They met in the Ohio State-Clemson Fiesta Bowl in a College Football Playoff semifinal last season, and co uld be on track to meet in the playoff again. And then they'll almost certainly share the stage in Cleveland as they embark on their careers as potential NFL franchise quarterbacks (Chapter 3). LSU's Joe Burrow was the No. 1 pick in this 2020 NFL Draft a s an Ohio native and former Buckeye who was picked by an Ohio team in the Cincinnati Bengals. Fields transferred to Ohio State from Georgia and he won't find a home with an Ohio NFL team, but he almost certainly will enter the league as part of this comi ng Ohio draft. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

In recent years, as the debate over amateurism in college athletics has raged on, the question often arises: How much money does a top football player truly generate? A study by researchers at Ohio State University released this week tried to provide an answer, and the figures are robust. According to the study, five-star recruits are worth an average of $650,000 per year to their program. The study, co-authored by Ohio State economics professor Trevon Logan, uses football revenue data from 2002 to 2012 for all Football Bowl Subdivision schools as well as the recruiting database of Rivals.com. It operates on a two-step procedure. Researchers started by inferring the value of high-level recruits on team performance by tracking the rankings of recruits a t one school in a given year and the program's wins and bowl appearance from that season. The second step involved determining the effect these results - wins and bowl appearances - have on total revenue. Absent from the study was any mention of th e value provided by coaches, the people who actually do get paid - in most cases, quite handsomely - on a college football team. Instead of insisting players get paid, the goal of the study seemed to be to evaluate how much a player should be paid compar ed with his teammates, based on the value he brings to his team's success. - Baltimore Sun

Quarterbacks always rocket to the top of the NFL Draft, and Ohio State football's Justin Fields is already considered a contender for the No. 1 overall spot in 2021. Does he need a strong 2020 season to ensure that high first-round status? Does he need a 2020 season at all? Within reason, statistical production is less important than one might think for draft prospects. Fields already possess many of the attributes NFL scouts and general managers covet most. That won't change between now and whenever he walks on stage in Cleveland in April 2021.Physically, the onetime baseball prospect has a prototypical quarterback's frame. If anything he seems even more solid than the 6-3, 228-pound roster listing would suggest. Fields is broad-shouldered and thick. He gets a lot of credit for playing with toughness, and while that's warranted, he also dishes it out as well as he takes it from some opposing defenders. The arm strength is legitimate, but not because NFL evaluators want to see Hail Mary bombs. Fields routinely impressed with his ability to hit tight sideline windows from the far hashes in 2019. He possesses a sophisticated array of throws in an offense where Ryan Day has incorporated pro elements and looks. - Cleveland Plain Dealer
