Ole Miss football might've just won its biggest recruiting battle of 2020. Speaking to media members on Wednesday, Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin recounted a conversation he had with quarterback Matt Corral. Corral told Kiffin he is "1,000%" committed to coming back for his redshirt junior season in 2021, forgoing the NFL Draft for at least one more season. That news is huge for Ole Miss, obviously. Corral has played at a record-setting pace in 2020 and will likely enter next season as a preseason All-SEC honoree, if not preseason All-America candidate. Kiffin said Corral told him he feels he needs another year in college to refine his skills, and if Corral does manage to improve from 2020 to 2021, that could mean a huge season for the Ole Miss offense. - The Clarion Ledger

Matt Corral threw for two touchdowns as Ole Miss raced to a 14-0 first quarter lead and held off a late Mississippi State surge Saturday to defeat the Bulldogs 31-24 in the Egg Bowl rivalry. Ole Miss (4-4, 4-4 Southeastern Conference) snapped a two-game losing streak in the rivalry, erasing last year’s painful one-point loss after Elijah Moore drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the end zone, pushing back a PAT that failed in the final seconds. Saturday, Moore responded with 12 receptions for 139 yards, including four catches to convert on third and fourth downs. Moore entered the game leading the nation in receptions (10.6 per game) and yardage (159.3).

Corral was 24 of 36 passing for 385 yards with touchdowns of 81 yards to Braylon Sanders and 48 yards to Dontario Drummond as Ole Miss built a 21-7 second quarter lead and never trailed. Snoop Conner and Jerrion Ealy added touchdown runs of 1 and 8 yards, respectively. Freshman Will Rogers threw three touchdown passes for Mississippi State (2-6, 2-6) including 6 and 11 yards to Malik Heath. Rogers finished 45 for 61 passing for 440 yards and pulled the Bulldogs within 24-21 on a 7-yard strike to Austin Williams. Rogers directed Mississippi State to an opportunity on the final play from the Ole Miss 36-yard line, lofting a pass to the end zone that was knocked down by A.J. Finley. - Ole Miss/AP College Football

The Biletnikoff Award is given annually to the most outstanding wide receiver in college football. In 2012, Kiffin coached USC's Marqise Lee to the trophy. In 2014, Kiffin coached Alabama's Amari Cooper to the award. Kiffin sees Moore differently than his star receivers of yesteryear. "Elijah's quickness is different," Kiffin said. "He's smaller than those guys. But we've just never had somebody this quick. Those guys are more prototypical outside receivers. He's a slot. He looks a lot like [Carolina Panthers legend] Steve Smith." Moore erupted for 10 catches and 227 yards in Ole Miss' season-opening loss to Florida, his first game under Kiffin's tutelage.

After the game, Kiffin shared a bold prediction he made to Moore during their first meeting. He told Moore he was going to shatter Ole Miss' single-season receiving records. "I don't just want to be another name here," Moore said. "Everyone thinks that's OK. That's the world we live in. Everyone's like 'Oh, I'm at the school' or 'Oh I got here' and that's it. No. You want to leave here and people will be like 'Oh my God, Elijah Moore went here." Kiffin thinks of Moore like a great basketball player. If you have someone like LeBron James or Michael Jordan on your team, he touches the ball every possession. So why shouldn't Moore do the same for the Ole Miss offense? Anyway, wide receivers are underused. Kiffin laments about how silly it is that Julio Jones never caught more than 78 passes in a season at Alabama. If running backs can touch the ball 25 times a game, receivers can handle half that workload. - The Clarion Ledger

In another historic game, Corral managed to break the Ole Miss single-game passing record, posting 513 yards and passing Shea Patterson's 489-yard performance in 2017. Corral completed 28 out of 32 passes and four touchdowns in the showdown against the Gamecocks on Saturday. "He actually has more total yards per game than anyone in the conference including (Florida's Kyle) Trask," UM head coach Lane Kiffin said in a press conference. "That's pretty impressive, and just a sophomore. He made some plays that have some Mahomes-type of arm angles in the game, which we don't teach." Currently, Corral holds 533 total yards, the second-most in Ole Miss history. Archie Manning still sits on the top with 540 total yards. In addition, the California native has had five games this season in which he passed for over 300 yards, tying him for the third-best in Ole Miss football history. Corral is also tied for fifth on the single-season record list with 22 passing touchdowns. - Daily Mississippian

Corral and Moore have put together back-to-back games so impressive, with stats so eye-popping, that hyperbole doesn't even work anymore. Corral has completed 59 of his last 66 pass attempts, good for an 89.4% completion percentage. He has 925 yards and 10 touchdowns with no interceptions in that span. Phrased another way, Corral has three more touchdowns than incompletions in the last two games. Moore has been Corral's favorite target. The junior has 27 catches for 463 yards and five touchdowns in that same time span. That includes Saturday night, when he caught 13 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns. But the 91-yard score was much more impressive than numbers on a stat sheet. South Carolina cornerback Jaycee Horn is one of the best in the country. He'd been lined up against Moore all day. Ole Miss was so concerned about Horn's potential to lock down Moore, the game plan actually called for Moore to line up out of position at running back just to confuse defenses - where Moore ran six times and gained 45 yards moonlighting as a running back. - The Clarion Ledger

The current Ole Miss receiver most likely to follow after Metcalf and Brown is junior Elijah Moore. A native Floridian rather than Mississippian, Moore has put up video game numbers for Ole Miss this season. Moore leads all Power 5 receivers in receptions (61), receiving yards (829), catches per game (10.1) and yards per game (138.2). He's on pace to break Brown's Ole Miss single-season receiving records in a pandemic-shortened season and could break the NCAA record for catches per game. Moore was a freshman when Metcalf and Brown were juniors. He's taking the lessons he learned from them and translating those lessons to the receivers younger than him. "I just feel like it's the competitive aspect whenever you get on the field," Moore said. "Even after practice with these guys, we're really competing every day. Day-in and day-out it's a competition. Competing against the best is going to bring out the best in you."

Recruiting rankings seem to indicate Metcalf and Brown weren't outliers. Six of the 11 highest rated Mississippi high school players in the 247Sports composite rankings for the Class of 2021 are receivers. Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin says he doesn't use Brown and Metcalf directly as recruiting tools. He likes to sell recruits on players he coached, not players from previous regimes at his new school. That said, he said he knows having Brown and Metcalf as examples of in-state recruits turning Ole Miss tenures into ascendant NFL careers will help attract the best prospects Mississippi has to offer. "Maybe there's a little bit more when you're recruiting an in-state player," Kiffin said. "Here's a great player that stayed home. It just gives them an example of 'Hey, you don't have to go to Georgia or Alabama or LSU. You can stay right here.' It's been done before." - The Clarion Ledger

A week after a three-turnover game, the OSU quarterback was the steadying force on offense. Even though he wasn't great throwing the ball - 14-of-23 for 108 yards - he was clearly mindful of not throwing it to the other team. A couple of times, he opted to throw it away instead of trying to make a tough play. Those were smart decisions. He also held on to the football, whether he was running or moving around in the backfield. Not once did he put it on the ground. Turnovers would've been killer with Tylan Wallace, Chuba Hubbard and LD Brown hobbled, but Sanders steered clear of disaster Saturday. - Daily Oklahoman
