  11/06/20 - JJ PeguesrSr/2025, Mississippi, 6-3, 309 (DS#36 DT) + More +

Bigsby may get the most playing time out of the freshmen, but Pegues is one of the most talked about freshmen. The 300-pound tight end has demonstrated a dangerous and unique set of skills. He can bury defenders with his blocks, out run them when he rushes the ball and catch balls in the receiving game. Against LSU, he had three catches for 29 yards. This season, he has four catches for 33 yards and four rushes for 16 yards. - Birmingham News

  11/05/20 - Spencer SandersrSr/2024, Mississippi, 6-1, 209 (DS#32 QB) + More +

After reviewing the game tape, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy was not as bothered by quarterback Spencer Sanders' three turnovers as he was immediately following Saturday's 41-34 loss to Texas. Sanders fumbled twice and threw an interception, all of which led to Texas points in the overtime defeat. "The interception, he threw the ball behind the receiver and the Texas guy was in good position," Gundy said Monday in his weekly Zoom teleconference. "The ball exchange issue, he needs to have a better grip on the ball. That's his responsibility on the one we dropped in the first quarter. That's reps. "The strip right before halftime, he was in the pocket for almost five seconds and the guy came from behind. Little better feel for the game. Nobody's open, pull it down, take off and run."

Sanders has turned the ball over five times in the last two games, reigniting the feel of his freshman season last fall, when turnover issues plagued the young quarterback through the middle of the season. But Gundy isn't as concerned about this year's issues. "It was almost like a perfect storm," Gundy said. "We had some issues to correct with Spencer last year. What happened Saturday was not what we dealt with with him last year. Just had a little bit of a perfect storm. Hopefully, we can get some of that corrected before the next game. I'm not as concerned about it as what I was after the game, just based on seeing what transpired." - Daily Oklahoman

After a combined total of just 354 passing yards vs. Arkansas and Auburn, Corral got back on track in a big way during a 54-21 win over Vanderbilt. The redshirt sophomore broke Eli Manning's school record with 19 straight completions, tied Manning's school record with six touchdown passes and was named the Walter Camp national offensive player of the week. In only three quarters of work, Corral was 31 of 34 with 412 passing yards and the six touchdown passes. - Birmingham News

  11/04/20 - *Elijah MooreJr/2021, Mississippi, 5-10, 178 (DS#5 WR) + More +

Wide receiver Elijah Moore didn't have Ole Miss records on his mind. He wanted to set Lane Kiffin records. Moore went into halftime of Ole Miss' 54-21 win over Vanderbilt with 12 catches for 223 yards and three touchdowns. That's not a misprint. The junior outgained Vanderbilt by 29 yards on his own in the first two quarters. So coming out of halftime, Moore knew he was poised to slice through the school record books. But his sights were less on Ole Miss' history, and more on the award-winning receivers in his head coach's past. "He asked me at the start of the third quarter 'What's the most you've ever had from a wide receiver?" Kiffin said. "I think he wanted to break the record I'd been around. I told him I think [former USC receiver] Marqise Lee against Arizona had 340 in a game we actually lost. He thought he was really good. He had 220 at the half so he had a long ways to go."

Moore didn't get to Lee's 345-yard mark to break the Kiffin record. But he broke or matched a slew of Ole Miss records. He caught 14 passes for 238 yards and three touchdowns. The performance broke the Ole Miss single-game record for receiving yards and matched the school records for receiving touchdowns and receptions. And he did all that despite making his last catch with more than 10 minutes remaining in the third quarter. "Records are meant to be broken," Moore said. "But the overall goal is just to win. So as long as we got that through, that's the most important thing." - The Clarion Ledger

  10/31/20 - *Elijah MooreJr/2021, Mississippi, 5-10, 178 (DS#5 WR) + More +

It was a record Saturday for Mississippi quarterback Matt Corral and wide receiver Elijah Moore. Corral threw for 412 yards and six touchdowns, Moore had 14 catches for 238 yards and the Rebels beat Vanderbilt 54-21 to snap a three-game losing streak. It was the second consecutive win for Ole Miss (2-4, 2-4 Southeastern Conference) over Vanderbilt (0-4, 0-4). The Rebels won 31-6 last season. Vanderbilt had not played since Oct. 10 and had several players dealing with COVID-19. Corral completed 19 consecutive passes, breaking Eli Manning's program record of 18 straight against Murray State in his debut his sophomore season. Corral's six touchdown passes also tied Manning's record for touchdown passes in a game set against Arkansas in 2001. Corral set the school record for touchdown passes in regulation since five of Manning's passes came in overtime. - Mississippi/AP College Football

  10/25/20 - JJ PeguesrSr/2025, Mississippi, 6-3, 309 (DS#36 DT) + More +

He is beauty, and he is grace. He is - Auburn's 300-pound freshman tight end. J.J. Pegues is the Tigers' super-sized skill player who has quickly become somewhat of a sensation in the college football Twittersphere. The 6-foot-2, 300-pound tight end has done a little bit of a lot so far in his first season on the Plains, serving as Auburn's Wildcat quarterback, lining up as an end-of-line blocking tight end, splitting out wide, playing on special teams and, yes, even attempting a pass. "You know, I haven't (seen anything like him)," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said. "Of course, I haven't coached many 300-pound skill guys, either. He's got a special skillset. We knew that when we recruited him."

Pegues is a tight end with a lineman's size, the athleticism and fluidity of a wide receiver, and the versatility of a modern running back. It's a rare combination to witness, the kind of size and skillset that would normally garner recognition from the Piesman Trophy - an award that has recognized "linemen who do un-linemen-like things" since 2015 - and you'd be hard-pressed to come up with an adequate player comparison for Auburn's 300-pound unicorn of a player. "I really don't know who it would be, to be honest, because I've never seen an athlete his size that can move on a football field like he does - and that can do as many different things on the field as he can do," said Chris Cutcliffe, who coached Pegues at Oxford (Miss.) High. - Birmingham News

  10/23/20 - Spencer SandersrSr/2024, Mississippi, 6-1, 209 (DS#32 QB) + More +

Spencer Sanders and Shane Illingworth have been splitting time with the first team at practice for several days now, but Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy isn't committing to a starter for Saturday's game against No. 17 Iowa State. "If I knew, I wouldn't tell you," Gundy said with a wry smile on Monday morning. "We might play both. "I'm not sure right now. We continue to get 'em quality work. Spencer's healthy and then, obviously, Shane's played pretty good. I'm just glad to have a couple guys that can play. I've had some years around here where I was down to my third-team guy in the middle of the season. So we're just thankful that we've got a couple guys that we trust that can get out there and play." The sixth-ranked Cowboys host Iowa State at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Boone Pickens Stadium. Sanders has been recovering from an injured ankle and hasn't played since the second series of the season opener against Tulsa. - Daily Oklahoman

  10/22/20 - *Matt CorralrJr/2022, Mississippi, 6-2, 215 (DS#4 QB) + More +

In a game that Ole Miss had many opportunities to win, the Rebels managed to get stopped repeatedly at the goal line and lose to Arkansas 33-21. The offense was shut down by Hudson Clark, an Arkansas walk-on who recorded three interceptions. Corral threw six interceptions, and two of them were pick sixes. Corral is also the first Southeastern Conference (SEC) quarterback in 14 years to throw six interceptions in one game. "This game can be really humbling, and you've got to be careful with reading all your stuff during the week with how great you are because (this game) will bring you right back down." UM head coach Lane Kiffin said in a press conference on Saturday. "Once you start playing well, people study you."

It does not take long to see what cost the Rebels the win. Some may say this loss can be placed on Corral and Lane Kiffin, who opted to keep him in after multiple interceptions. "I've said it before: I believe you don't pull quarterbacks quick. I think people do that, and it affects confidence and rhythm," Kiffin said. "I know that most people probably would've done that today, but it's the same guy that, the last three weeks, people have been saying is one of the best in the country. I've said to John (Rhys Plumlee) that it would be the same if the roles were reversed." With that statement, Kiffin said that Plumlee would be a top quarterback in that nation if he were the starter. Many fans are asking, "Why not put in Plumlee?" This question will loom into next week and possibly all season. - Daily Mississippian

Mississippi quarterback Matt Corral entered Saturday's game against Arkansas with just one interception. He left with six more. The Razorbacks scored 24 points off seven Ole Miss turnovers and won a second Southeastern Conference game for the first time since 2016, beating the Rebels, 33-21. The Arkansas (2-2, 2-2) defense flustered Corral, who entered the game second in the SEC in passing efficiency and yards passing. The Razorback took advantage early, pitching a 20-0 shutout behind three Ole Miss giveaways at halftime. - AP College Football

The revived defense of the Arkansas Razorbacks has seen strong combinations of offensive fronts, tailbacks, wideouts, tight ends and quarterback so far in games against No. 4 Georgia, No. 16 Mississippi State and No. 13 Auburn. But the Razorbacks haven't seen anything like the assembly of skill talent and solid offensive linemen they'll face on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. against Ole Miss. Sophomore quarterback Matt Corral has advanced to next-level status in his first season under the tutelage of Coach Lane Kiffin and coordinator Jeff Lebby. Corral leads the nation with 407 total yards per game and the Rebels are second in the FBS with 573 yards per game and 11th with 41.7 points per game. "The guy's playing incredible," University of Arkansas Coach Sam Pittman said. "He's such a gifted athlete and he can throw any pass. He can throw a dart. He can throw a touch pass. He certainly can get away from pressure. The guy's a winner." The Rebels haven't been playing chopped liver either. Their games have been against Florida, Kentucky and traditional defensive stalwart Alabama. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  10/15/20 - Troy BrownrSr/2023, Mississippi, 6-1, 223 (DS#33 OLB) + More +

Plenty of talent and experience return to Akey's defense, including junior linebacker Troy Brown, who enjoyed a breakout year in 2019, earning First Team All-MAC honors. Brown is on the watch list for both the Bronko Nagurski and Chuck Bednarik awards. "He's a play-making son-of-a-gun," Akey said of Brown, who moved to linebacker from the secondary before last season. "He's got a great football awareness to him. He's gained comfort in knowing how to work within the package and how to make things happen. … he makes big things happen. He's getting stronger so he's helped himself physically but also mentally." - Central Michigan Football

Ole Miss' 647 total yards are the most any team has ever gained against a Nick Saban coached Alabama team. In fact, it's the most yardage a team has gained against any Alabama team. Ever. But Corral isn't willing to rest on that success. "When you make mistakes, you can't make many of them," Corral said about playing against Alabama. "And when they make mistakes, you need to capitalize on them. We didn't do that tonight." Unfortunately, it's hard to win football games when you give up 723 yards and nine touchdowns on 11 drives. Realistically, Alabama should've scored a 10th touchdown if not for a lost fumble inside the 2-yard line. To Kiffin, it's hard to describe this game without using the word "waste." "It's a really disappointing game with the outcome," Kiffin said. "You have the No. 1 team in the country on the ropes. You have a chance to beat them at home here and we don't get it done...So it's kind of a shame that we weren't able to pull it off." - The Clarion Ledger

After the game, Alabama coach Nick Saban questioned whether Kiffin - a former Alabama offensive coordinator under Saban - knew the signals, which, he added, was not unusual. Linebacker Dylan Moses hinted at the signals being an issue, and "it didn't help that coach Kiffin was our coach for like three years and knows the ins and outs of our defense." "FYI, when u go as fast as we do we call our play first," Kiffin tweeted. "Stealing signals wouldn't help us at all because we are snapping the ball why they were still trying to just line up." He also tweeted for Alabama to go win the College Football Playoff national championship. When it comes to the Crimson Tide, Kiffin continues to attract attention.

Prior to the start of Saturday's game, Kiffin took to Twitter to let fans know his pregame suit work was in honor of the Paul "Bear" Bryant. In the week prior leading up to the game, he revealed he is in a group text with three SEC coaches, all of whom are former assistants under Saban: Tennessee's Jeremy Pruitt, Georgia' Kirby Smart and South Carolina's Will Muschamp. When told by Paul Finebaum that Saban is the connection among the coaches, Kiffin quipped, "Yeah, we all have the same father." On Saturday night, Kiffin's offense put up more yards against an Alabama defense than has ever been done before and scored more points against the Crimson Tide than any unranked team has ever. Matt Corral passed for 365 yards for Ole Miss (1-2) and the Rebels put up 647 yards on the Tide. The teams combined for an SEC-record 1,370 yards. - Birmingham News
