  06/18/20 - Dillon DoylerSr/2023, Baylor, 6-3, 238 (DS#19 ILB) + More +

Former Iowa linebacker Dillon Doyle has found his new college home in Waco, Texas. Doyle announced his commitment to Baylor via Twitter on Thursday. "I want to thank everyone that has SUPPORTED me throughout my recruitment," Dillon Doyle wrote in his tweet. "Baylor provides a SPECIAL situation to be part of a CULTURE with world-class PEOPLE and COACHES every day, and I CAN'T WAIT to get started."

Doyle is the son of former Hawkeye strength and conditioning coach Chris Doyle who reached a separation agreement earlier this week with the university after Black former football players alleged he fostered a culture of racial bias and bullying. Dillon Doyle announced he was entering the NCAA transfer portal on June 9, three days after Chris Doyle was placed on paid administrative leave by Iowa. A three-star 2018 prospect out of Iowa City West, Doyle logged 23 tackles as a sophomore this past season for the Hawkeyes. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

  06/14/20 - Terrel BernardrSr/2022, Baylor, 6-1, 218 (DS#14 OLB) + More +

Baylor's season opening football game against Ole Miss has been moved from Sept. 5 to Sunday Sept. 6 at NRG Stadium in Houston as part of ESPN's package of Labor Day games. The Bears will be designated the home team for the neutral site game which will match a pair of first-year head coaches at their respective schools: Baylor's Dave Aranda and Mississippi's Lane Kiffin. The kickoff time will be announced at a later date. "ESPN's Sunday game during kickoff weekend has quickly developed into a strong franchise," said Pete Derzis, ESPN senior vice president of programming and ESPN Events. "We look forward to continuing that success as we feature two head coaches in their inaugural games with two great programs. We want to thank the schools and our Texas kickoff team for recognizing this unique opportunity." The game will mark the second meeting between the two schools. Baylor defeated the Rebels, 20-10, in the only previous meeting in 1975. - Waco Tribune Herald

  06/09/20 - Dillon DoylerSr/2023, Baylor, 6-3, 238 (DS#19 ILB) + More +

A three-star 2018 prospect out of Iowa City West, Doyle logged 23 tackles as a sophomore this past season for the Hawkeyes. "I'd like to thank my teammates and others in the community for the overwhelming amount of SUPPORT I've received the last few days," Doyle said in a tweet announcing he was entering the NCAA transfer portal. Since last Friday, black former Hawkeye football players have come forward with allegations of racial discrimination they faced while playing for Iowa, and numerous accounts were centered on Chris Doyle. On Saturday, Iowa placed Doyle on indefinite administrative leave. And on Sunday, head coach Kirk Ferentz told reporters that athletic director Gary Barta would coordinate an independent investigation on Iowa's strength and conditioning program, which Doyle has led since 1999. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

  05/21/20 - Jason SmithrSr/2009, Baylor, 6-5, 309 (DS#1 OT) + More +

Former No. 2 overall NFL draft pick Jason Smith highlights an eight-person induction class to the Baylor Athletics Hall of Fame, which was announced Wednesday. The class spans six different sports and features a quartet of three-time All-Americans in women's tennis star Lenka Broosova, men's tennis standout Lars Poerschke, softball great Brette Reagan, and track and field stalwart Todd Cooper. The class also includes volleyball's Anna Breyfogle and football's Brad Goebel and Andrew Melontree. Smith ranks as one of Baylor's top offensive linemen to pass through Waco. He was recruited as a tight end before moving to tackle after his freshman season. He started 30 straight games over the next three seasons and picked up consensus All-America honors in 2008 for a BU offense that produced the team's most rushing yards in 27 years (2,349). The then-St. Louis Rams selected Smith as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, Baylor's first first-round pick since Daryl Gardener in 1996. He played three years with the Rams and another with the New York Jets before his pro career ended. - Waco Tribune Herald

  05/20/20 - Trestan EbnerrSr/2022, Baylor, 5-11, 209 (DS#42 RB) + More +

With the trajectory Trestan Ebner has been on, next season should be his best. His 29 receptions in 2018 ranked 10th among Power Five running backs, and he rushed 53 times for 250 yards and three touchdowns last season. Ebner helped carry much of Baylor's running back efficiency - along with departing back JaMycal Hasty and senior John Lovett, the trio combined for 1,537 of the team's 2,330 rushing yards (66% of the total). - Dallas Morning News

Denzel Mims moving on to the NFL paves the way for Tyquan Thornton to be the Bears' top receiver next season. He followed behind Mims in 2019 with a second-best 45 receptions and 782 receiving yards. His standout freshman campaign foreshadowed his potential to become one of Baylor's most productive receivers, and his consistent improvement shows he's on track to have his best season yet. - Dallas Morning News

  05/11/20 - *Robert GriffinrJr/2012, Baylor, 6-2, 223 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Before Robert Griffin III was a Heisman Trophy winner, before he was RG3, before he revitalized Baylor football, in fact even before he enrolled at Baylor in early 2008, he was a high school track star. On May 11, 2007, Griffin was a junior at Copperas Cove High School when he burned up the track in the UIL Track and Field State Meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin. Griffin set records in both the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles that day. The future Baylor Bear football star ran the 300 hurdles in 35.33 seconds, setting a state record for all classes and missed tying the national record by .01 of a second. He also set the Class 4A state record in the 110 hurdles at 13.55 seconds. Griffin's next standout track meet would come a little more than a year later when, as a first-semester freshman, he won the Big 12 title in the 400 hurdles with a time of 49.73. - Waco Tribune

  05/06/20 - Gunnar RoyerrSr/2022, Baylor, 6-2, 220 (DS#999 LS) + More +

Ross Matiscik and Gunnar Royer never thought about long snapping as an avenue to the NFL when they were high school seniors trying to figure out where to play college football. Overlooked by FBS schools, their first priorities were proving themselves as defensive players. But after long snapping at Baylor for the last four years, Matiscik will get his shot to play in the NFL for the Jacksonville Jaguars after agreeing to a free agent contract on April 25. Next year, Royer hopes to be in a similar position. Looking to increase his exposure to the NFL, Royer recently signed with Baylor as a graduate transfer after long snapping for Indiana University of Pennsylvania, an NCAA Division II school.

Royer jumped on the radar of FBS schools when he was rated the best graduate transfer long snapper in the country after averaging .65 seconds per snap at a Kohl's Kicking Camp in January at IMG Academy in Florida. Both Baylor special teams coordinator Matt Powledge and head coach Dave Aranda were impressed with what they saw, and offered him a scholarship. "I know I'm good enough to play D-I," Royer said. "Just going through the whole process, the Baylor coaches really created a relationship with me. Instead of calling me one time, they stayed in contact with me and that made the difference." - Waco Tribune Herald

  05/03/20 - Blake LynchrSr/2020, Baylor, 6-2, 225 (DS#50 OLB) + More +

When NFL training camps finally open, Baylor rookie defensive players will be spread all over the country from Seattle to Green Bay to Atlanta and many points in between. Three Baylor defenders were drafted on April 25 as Minnesota took All-America lineman James Lynch in the fourth round, Carolina chose all-Big 12 lineman Bravvion Roy in the sixth round and the Los Angeles Rams grabbed second team all-Big 12 linebacker Clay Johnston in the seventh round. But the real onslaught came in the hour after the NFL Draft ended. There was a signing frenzy as seven more Baylor defensive players agreed to free agent contracts. "I thought that it would happen but to see it happen was crazy," said former Baylor linebacker Blake Lynch. "Coach (Matt) Rhule prepared us for the NFL. I think everybody is going to make a team honestly." Blake Lynch will join James Lynch in Minnesota while linebacker Jordan Williams went to Atlanta, safety Henry Black to Green Bay, safety Chris Miller to Seattle, defensive end James Lockhart to Pittsburgh, cornerback Jameson Houston to Cleveland, and defensive back Grayland Arnold to Philadelphia. - Waco Tribune

  04/27/20 - Sam TecklenburgrSr/2020, Baylor, 6-3, 310 (DS#43 OG) + More +

It wasn't that Sam Tecklenburg ever stopped loving football, but shortly after the end of the 2019 season, he decided he'd had enough. At the time, he said it was the toughest decision of his life, but that he would be hanging up the pads for good. "I was just feeling as burnt out as I ever had," Tecklenburg, the former Baylor OL, told The News on Sunday. "I had given everything I had to that last year ... at the time just wasn't that interested, once that was over." That announcement came in January, but as the months waned on, Tecklenburg started to get the itch to play again. A return was never formalized, though. It wasn't until his ex-head coach Matt Rhule, now the head coach of the Panthers, reached out on Saturday that the plan even went into motion.

As of Sunday afternoon, he was no longer retired. He was preparing to sign an NFL contract with the Carolina Panthers. His change in mindset - the idea of playing football again - was gradual. But the opportunity to actually sign forced Tecklenburg to speed up that decision process. Rhule, who also drafted former Baylor DL Bravvion Roy, called Tecklenburg after the draft ended and offered Tecklenburg a contract. - Dallas Morning News

  04/25/20 - Denzel MimsSr/2020, Baylor, 6-3, 207 (DS#5 WR) + More +

In an NFL Draft loaded with talented wide receivers, Baylor's Denzel Mims was selected by the New York Jets in the second round with the 59th overall pick on Friday night. Mims was the 13th wide receiver drafted after six were selected in Thursday's first round followed by six more earlier in the second round. Mock drafts projected the 6-3, 207-pound Mims to be selected either late in the first round or early in the second round after an all-Big 12 season and a strong performance during the week of the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.

He then turned in great numbers at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis in February as he was clocked at 4.38 seconds in the 40-yard dash and had a 38.5-inch vertical leap. Though he was drafted lower than expected, Mims became the highest Baylor draft pick since 2016 when the Cleveland Browns picked Biletnikoff Award winning receiver Corey Coleman No. 15 overall in the first round and the Miami Dolphins picked cornerback Xavien Howard in the second round with the No. 38 overall pick. Last year, the San Francisco 49ers picked Baylor wide receiver Jalen Hurd in the third round with the No. 67 overall pick. - Waco Tribune Herald

Former Arkansas State defensive end William Bradley-King has signed with Baylor as a graduate transfer and will be immediately eligible in the 2020 season. The 6-4, 248-pound Bradley-King was named first-team all-Sun Belt Conference in 2019 as he collected 49 tackles with 13.5 for loss and 8.5 sacks. He also forced three fumbles and recovered two. As a junior in 2018, he was named second-team all-conference after making 33 tackles with 9.5 for loss and six sacks. He forced two fumbles and recovered one. Bradley-King was an all-state linebacker at Hogan Preparatory Academy in Kansas City in 2015 before signing with Arkansas State. - Waco Tribune Herald

  04/13/20 - Siaki IkarJr/2023, Baylor, 6-3, 347 (DS#8 DT) + More +

Like everyone else who follows college football, LSU director of strength and conditioning Tommy Moffitt is waiting to find out if and when the games will go on after the greatest danger passes from the coronavirus pandemic. Unlike most people, Moffitt's job is to make sure LSU's players are physically ready to train for the 2020 season, whether it can be played on time or begins later than scheduled. "My biggest concern is player safety," Moffitt said Monday night on LSU's in-house radio show, "LSU Sixty." "It's my responsibility to make sure they're in shape before we start any form of training camp. "For me to do my job, I feel I would need at least a month to prepare."

Moffitt said he and his staff meet once a week to discuss projects they're working on. One of the things they've been gaming out are various timelines depending on when the season would start. LSU is currently set to open the season Sept. 5 in Tiger Stadium against UTSA. "We need possible scenarios from June to August," Moffitt said. "I'm getting my staff and myself ready for whatever happens." Like the rest of the campus, LSU's athletic facilities are closed to its student-athletes except for some dining and medical support. Moffitt said he and his staff are in constant contact with the football players, whether they are still in Baton Rouge or back in their hometowns, having crafted training plans to help them work out on their own. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  04/07/20 - Clay JohnstonrSr/2020, Baylor, 6-1, 227 (DS#21 ILB) + More +

Though his college career was over, Johnston still wanted a shot to play in the NFL. Following surgery by renowned physician Dr. James Andrews a week after his injury, Johnston has been rehabbing his knee for the last six months and is getting closer to 100 percent. "I can run max speed right now and I'm about 90 to 95 percent in being able to change directions," Johnston said. "The doctor told me I won't be cleared until the first preseason game. But everything has gone great. I'm quarantined at home and my dad has helped a lot with my rehab and movement and lifting."

Due to coronavirus shelter-in-place restrictions, Johnston has stayed home in China Spring to rehab and work out. He has been joined by his father, who is bringing 24 years of NFL experience as a strength and conditioning coach to Rhule's Carolina Panthers' staff. "Dad has been extremely valuable," Clay said. "He took over the rehab process and the training and knows what I need to do to come back from this ACL injury. He's been a huge blessing and I'll always be thankful for him. He does the same workout as me. At 64, he's a lion." Johnston hopes a team will select him during the NFL Draft April 23-25, but he'll be happy to go the free agent route if necessary. Though his only physical activity at February's NFL Combine was the bench press, he met with numerous NFL teams during the week in Indianapolis. - Waco Tribune
