In an NFL Draft loaded with talented wide receivers, Baylor's Denzel Mims was selected by the New York Jets in the second round with the 59th overall pick on Friday night. Mims was the 13th wide receiver drafted after six were selected in Thursday's firs t round followed by six more earlier in the second round. Mock drafts projected the 6-3, 207-pound Mims to be selected either late in the first round or early in the second round after an all-Big 12 season and a strong performance during the week of the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.He then turned in great numbers at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis in February as he was clocked at 4.38 seconds in the 40-yard dash and had a 38.5-inch vertical leap. Though he was drafted lower than expected, Mims became the highest Baylor draft pick since 2016 when the Cleveland Browns picked Biletnikoff Award winning receiver Corey Coleman No. 15 overall in the first round and the Miami Dolphins picked cornerback Xavien Howard in the second round with the N o. 38 overall pick. Last year, the San Francisco 49ers picked Baylor wide receiver Jalen Hurd in the third round with the No. 67 overall pick. - Waco Tribune Herald

Denzel Mims made a leaping 4-yard touchdown catch in the third overtime for Baylor, capping another comeback victory that kept the Bears undefeated. Charlie Brewer also threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Mims on fourth down in the second overtime to exten d the game. Brewer had a 3-yard scoring run in the first overtime. The Bears (9-0, 6-0 Big 12) finally won on Grayland Arnold's interception of Max Duggan's fourth-down pass in the end zone. Baylor forced overtime when John Mayers kicked a 51-yard field goal with 36 seconds left in regulation. The ball just cleared the crossbar to tie it at 9. TCU (4-5, 2-4) led 9-0 after Jonathan Song made two field goals at the end of the first half. - Baylor/AP College Football

Denzel Mims was a little slow getting up after a play when he saw Baylor's call for the next snap. The senior receiver quickly waved off another player heading on to the field to take his place. "I didn't want to seem soft and seem out of shape. So, I wa s like man, let me get up. Even though I'm hurt, let me get up," he said. "What play it was, I was like oh yeah, yeah, I want this, so I'm going to stay in."Mims then caught the second of his three touchdowns before Grayland Arnold's 73-yard punt return for a score in Baylor's 63-14 win over UTSA on Saturday. Charlie Brewer completed 12 of 16 passes for 163 yards and the three TDs to Mims while playing only the first half, when the Bears (2-0) built a 35-0 lead. Brewer also had a 5-yard touchdown run on a blistering hot day. The temperature at kickoff was 99 degrees. - AP College Football

2019 PRESEASON BILETNIKOFF AWARD WATCH LIST: Denzel Mims, Baylor,...This is the third-straight season Mims has been named to the watch list, as he was added midseason during the 2017 season and was on the preseason watch list in 2018. The Bears had two o n the watch list last season as Jalen Hurd was also added to the list midseason. The Daingerfield, Texas, native, is coming off a 2018 campaign where he appeared in 12 games, starting 10 of them.He finished the regular season ranked 13thin the con ference with 66.2 yards per game, 12thwith 4.6 receptions per game and collected 794 yards receiving on 55 receptions for a team-leading eight touchdowns.
