His 98-yard kick return for a touchdown against Iowa State earned him Special Teams Player of the Week honors. After garnering the 2020 Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Year award, Ebner becomes the third player in conference history to earn consecutive Special Teams Player of the Year honors since the award was added in 2005.   SEPT 27 BIG 12 SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Trestan Ebner, Baylor, RB, Sr.,...Ebner contributed to Baylor's win over ISU with 168 return yards. His day was highlighted by a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the third quarter that helped BU wrestle momentum back from the Cyclones in a back-and-forth contest. In total, Ebner racked up 121 yards on three kickoff returns and 47 more return yards on a pair of punt returns, including a 41-yarder late in the fourth quarter. It set up a 34-yard field goal that proved to be the difference in the 31-29 win. - Big 12 Football

Abram Smith and Tristan Ebner both rushed for more than 100 yards in the first half, and Baylor scored touchdowns on its first seven possessions in a 66-7 victory over Texas Southern on Saturday night. Gerry Bohanon was 16-for-21 passing for 240 yards and three touchdowns and ran for two scores for the Bears (2-0). Baylor outgained Texas Southern 458-52 in the first half and 714-283 overall in matching its win total from last season, when the Bears were 2-7. "I was impressed with the week that went into this," Baylor coach Dave Aranda said after his first nonconference home game with the Bears, who didn't play outside the Big 12 because of the pandemic in his 2020 debut. "I think some of that had to do with just the second week, knowing what's expected. The main piece was, "We're here, we can go there, we can do this. Look what we can become." Smith ran for 126 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries, and Ebner added 125 yards on 10 attempts, the second straight week both eclipsed the century mark. Taye McWilliams came on late and had 102 yards and a touchdown on six carries, giving the Bears three 100-yard rushers for the first time since Sept. 12, 2015, against Lamar.

The Bears' 419 yards rushing were the most they've had in a game since they put up 469 on Oct. 1, 2016, against Iowa State. Tyquan Thornton led Baylor with five catches for 103 yards and two touchdowns, and Ebner added 70 yards and a score on four catches. "Coach challenged me, Tyquan and some of the other receivers on the deep ball this game," Bohanon said. "We didn't connect well on it in the last game, so it was a big emphasis for us this week. We got the job done." - Baylor/AP College Football

  04/14/21 - RB Trestan EbnerrSr/2022, Baylor, 5-11, 209 (DS#42 RB) + More +

Trestan Ebner can't wait. Returning for his fifth season at Baylor, Ebner is looking forward to playing in new offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes' balanced attack. Whether the Bears will be as explosive as BYU's Grimes-guided attack in 2020 remains to be seen. But there's a good chance the running backs will have more room to run in the new wide zone offense. "I feel like it opens up holes, and I can just use my speed to make plays," Ebner said. "It just allows me to make one cut and get up to the second level and make my moves off the safety." There's nowhere to go but up for the Bears' rushing attack after ranking last in the Big 12 and 123 out of 127 NCAA Division I teams with 90.3 yards rushing per game in last year's 2-7 season.

Due in large part to injuries, the Bears didn't have a runner surpass 200 yards, as Craig "Sqwirl" Williams led the Bears with 197 yards. The Bears averaged a paltry 2.7 yards per carry and scored just eight touchdowns on the ground. But Baylor running backs coach Justin "Juice" Johnson likes the progress he's seen in spring drills and believes his group will be much more productive in the fall. "Great energy, great edge," Johnson said. "We're constantly working on cleaning up execution, but everybody's mental space to get there I think is in the right place. We've got great competition there. Everybody's approaching it the right way." - Waco Tribune Herald

Senior running backs John Lovett and Trestan Ebner are staying on the Baylor football team after reports surfaced Sunday night that they're opting out of the 2020 season because they're unhappy with their roles in the Bears' offense. During Monday's media availability, Baylor coach Dave Aranda said he discussed the situation with Lovett and Ebner, and they're sticking with the Bears as they prepare for Saturday's 2:30 p.m. game against TCU at McLane Stadium. "They're both with us and we're expecting them to play," Aranda said. "I think we just had to sit down with them and visit, and they both love our team and their teammates, and we're excited about our next opportunity against TCU."

Both Lovett and Ebner are key figures on Baylor's offense, and are among the team leaders. Before the season, their teammates voted them to wear single-digit jerseys with Ebner wearing No. 1 and Lovett No. 7. Ebner got off to a phenomenal start to open the season in Baylor's 47-14 win over Kansas when he was named Big 12 special teams player of the week after becoming the first player in the history of the league to score on a kickoff return, a run and a catch in the same game. Ebner returned kickoffs for 100 and 83 yards and also ran for a one-yard touchdown and caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Charlie Brewer. But during the last two games, Baylor's offense has struggled and the focus on the running attack has diminished. - Waco Tribune Herald

The Bears played a complete game: Offense, defense and especially the special teams contributed heavily to the blowout. "You could tell with the practices the guys were just ready to play and ready to hit someone," said Baylor running back Trestan Ebner. "I knew we should be ready for the moment. We started a little slow, but I'm thankful for how we finished. Guys picked it up and dominated the game." Ebner seemed to be everywhere as he became the first player in Big 12 history to catch a touchdown pass, run for a touchdown and return a kick for a score in a game.

Lightning struck twice for Ebner as he became the first Baylor player to return two kicks for touchdowns in a game. After taking the second-half kickoff to the house for a 100-yard touchdown, Ebner put his talents on repeat and returned a kickoff for an 83-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. "I would have thought Levi Norwood would have done it first," Ebner said of the former receiver and kick returner from 2011-14 who was honored as a Baylor Legend during the game. "He's just a great player I watched here. I'm just thankful that I was able to put my name in the Baylor record books, and I'm thankful for the chance to play with these great guys." - Waco Tribune Herald

Two of his touchdowns were via kickoff return with one going for 100 yards and the other for 83 yards. Ebner is the first player in the 25-year history of the Big 12 to score three different types of touchdowns in a game. Ebner is the only FBS player in the last 25 seasons (since 1996) to score a rushing TD, a receiving TD and multiple return touchdowns in a game. - Big 12 Football

Baylor senior running back Trestan Ebner enjoyed a big night as he scored four touchdowns while becoming the first player in school history to return two kicks for touchdowns in the Bears' 47-14 victory over Kansas on Saturday. He also became the first player in Big 12 history to score on a kick return, a catch and a run. "I'm just thankful that I was able to put my name in the Baylor record books, and I'm thankful for the chance to play with these great guys," Ebner said. "They try to give me the ball in multiple different ways. I'm just glad we could come out there and execute it." After running for a one-yard touchdown in the first quarter, Ebner grabbed an 18-yard pass from Charlie Brewer for a second-quarter touchdown. His most memorable play was his 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open the second half as he broke away from several Kansas tacklers before sprinting down the right sideline for the score. In the fourth quarter, Ebner found a crease along the right sideline again when he returned a kickoff for an 83-yard touchdown following a Baylor safety. - Waco Tribune Herald

Trestan Ebner returned the second-half kickoff 100 yards before going 83 yards for another touchdown on a free kick after a safety, and Baylor gave new coach Dave Aranda a win in his long-awaited debut, beating Kansas 47-14 on Saturday night. Ebner also had a 1-yard TD run and an 18-yard scoring catch as the Bears won their latest opener in 56 years after non-conference games against Louisiana Tech and Houston were called off for COVID-19 reasons. Aranda, the defensive coordinator for LSU's 15-0 national championship team last season, took over after Matt Rhule was hired by the NFL's Carolina Panthers. It was the Big 12 opener for both teams. Baylor gave up a 79-yard touchdown drive on the first possession under Aranda, but the defense clamped down while the Bears scored 40 consecutive points to hand the Jayhawks their 50th consecutive loss in a true Big 12 road game. The school announced a crowd of 11,667, about 25% of McLane Stadium's capacity. The largest clusters of fans were in the student sections behind the Kansas bench. - AP College Football

With the trajectory Trestan Ebner has been on, next season should be his best. His 29 receptions in 2018 ranked 10th among Power Five running backs, and he rushed 53 times for 250 yards and three touchdowns last season. Ebner helped carry much of Baylor's running back efficiency - along with departing back JaMycal Hasty and senior John Lovett, the trio combined for 1,537 of the team's 2,330 rushing yards (66% of the total). - Dallas Morning News

The Baylor Bears had sputtered just long enough to annoy coach Matt Rhule when running back Trestan Ebner took a pitch, saw most of the Stephen F. Austin defense closing in and took off the other way. Ebner's winding 21-yard run was the first of his three touchdowns, Charlie Brewer threw for 215 yards and three scores in barely more than a half and Baylor handed the Lumberjacks their seventh straight season-opening loss with a 56-17 victory Saturday night. "I didn't like that lull where they scored and we didn't answer it to the level that I think we should," Rhule said.

The third-year coach was referring to Stephen F. Austin getting the ball back after scoring against the Bears for the first time in a series that dates to 1928, although it was only the fifth meeting. Baylor's lead was just 14-7. But after scoring on a 3-yard run for those first SFA points, Trae Self's pass was intercepted by Blake Lynch, who partially blocked a punt on the opening series. Ebner's highlight-reel TD came six plays after Lynch's interception. "I saw a lot of white jerseys," said Ebner, who had 32 yards on two carries and another 40 yards receiving. "It's one of those plays where either you do it and it works or you look really stupid, so I'm really glad it worked." Ebner's other touchdowns were also in the first half on a 16-yard pass from Brewer and an 11-yard run. - AP College Football
