Wisconsin teammates John Torchio and Braelon Allen created a couple of truly memorable moments in an otherwise forgettable season-opening matchup. Allen had a 96-yard touchdown scamper for the longest run from scrimmage in program history and Torchio had the school's longest interception return as the 18th-ranked Badgers trounced Championship Subdivision program Illinois State 38-0 on Saturday night. The two record-setting touchdowns showcased Wisconsin's big-play ability across its roster. "You guys saw it tonight," said Allen, who rushed for 148 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries. "Not even just on the offense. We had the longest interception return for a touchdown as well. I think both sides of the ball have explosive playmakers." Torchio opened the scoring with a 100-yard interception return late in the first quarter after Illinois State had reached the red zone.

According to outside linebacker Nick Herbig, Torchio predicted the interception before the ball was snapped. "I'm getting lined up, and Torch says, ‘Hey, Herbie, I'm about to pick this one," said Herbig, who had two of Wisconsin's four sacks. "I'm like, ‘All right.' So I'm pass rushing, and I turn around and sure enough, there's Torch with the ball in his hand. He's called the ‘Jewelry Thief' for a reason." Torchio broke the record previously held by Joe Ferguson, who scored on a 99-yard interception return in a 59-10 victory over Utah State in 2017. Wisconsin's longest run from scrimmage before Allen's breakaway was James White's 93-yard burst in a 51-3 triumph over Indiana in 2013. - Wisconsin/AP College Football

Wisconsin's quarterback depth has taken a hit heading into the 18th-ranked Badgers' season opener. Backup quarterback Chase Wolf has injured his right leg and is out for an indefinite length of time. That leaves starter Graham Mertz as the only available Wisconsin quarterback who has taken a snap in a college game. Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst said the injury happened last week and indicated he doesn't know how much time Wolf will miss. The Badgers open their season Saturday by hosting Football Championship Subdivision program Illinois State. "Just offering up all my prayers to him," Mertz said Monday. "He's in surgery probably here in a little bit. Obviously, you never want to see your buddy go down." Wisconsin's remaining quarterbacks behind Mertz are redshirt freshman Deacon Hill and true freshmen Myles Burkett and Marshall Howe. Burkett was on campus for spring practice. "I couldn't sit here right now and tell you who's further ahead or not," Chryst said. - AP College Football

It'll be year No. 2 for QB1 at SMU. Senior Tanner Mordecai, the incumbent at SMU, was announced as the starting quarterback for the Mustangs by head coach Rhett Lashlee after practice on Friday. Mordecai beat out freshman Preston Stone for the second-straight season. Lashlee said he expects Stone, a former All-American at Parish Episcopal, to play this year. "We feel like that's just the best thing for our team and for those guys to give them, and us, the best chance to be ready to go in three weeks," Lashlee said after announcing the decision. "It's been a really good unifying moment for our team, and I like I told them yesterday, Tanner has earned that opportunity. I think the guys believe in him. Preston has earned the opportunity to play [as well]." Stone, like he often is, was the last player to leave the practice field on Tuesday.

Lashlee had just announced that Mordecai would be the starter, but Lashlee also preached then importance of all his players being ready to play, including his quarterbacks. "He's still going to get plenty of reps. The reality of it is he's one play away," Lashlee said about Stone. "You've got to get him ready, and he's still young. He's a redshirt freshman and it speaks a lot of what his teammates think about him and his ability to be in this situation for us to say, 'Hey, he's going to play. He's going to help us win." But when it comes to the leading role, that's Mordecai's job. Mordecai waited a while to be a starting quarterback. He was a four-star recruit out of Waco Midway and headed to Oklahoma. He played in 12 games for the Sooners, including a stint in place of starter Spencer Rattler in the 2020 Cotton Bowl. Mordecai then transferred to SMU where he won the starting job. - Dallas Morning News

Wisconsin's first day in full pads is set for Tuesday, the sixth practice of preseason camp. That means Paul Chryst and his staff should get a better feel for the team's personnel, particularly the linemen. The lack of full-contact work hasn't prevented Chryst from feeling optimistic about tailback Chez Mellusi, who missed the final four games last season after suffering a torn ACL in his left knee. "The way I was thinking about it was: If he can just clear some hurdles each practice," Chryst said after practice Monday morning.

"He had one - it sounds simple - but in a team setting got a handoff and (got) through it. He got hit a little bit. That was good to see. "Then he had another one where he kind of got banged to the ground. And he got back up. You don't want to take it for granted. Those are hurdles that he's got to go through." Mellusi had one run Monday in which he cut hard and accelerated toward the sideline. The move appeared natural and he appeared comfortable after the play. "He has been able to get probably as much (work) you want him to get," Chryst said. "You want him to be in a situation where he is wanting more. You don't want to be coasting at the end of the week. "He has been getting good work, honestly a little bit more than I anticipated." - Journal Sentinel

Dean Engram's versatility allowed him to develop into a consistent contributor for Wisconsin in two phases last season - defense and special teams. Engram served as UW's third cornerback and primary punt returner and rotated in on other special teams units as needed. The redshirt junior appears capable of doing the same in 2022, with a twist. Engram has made a smooth transition from cornerback to wide receiver, a move made in the spring, appears headed to returning punts again this season and could be one of the gunners on punt coverage. "Anything I can do to help this team is what my role is," Engram said after practice Tuesday. "If I'm going down as a ‘sky' gunner, get it down. If I've got to make a big (tackle) on a returner, go get it. On offense? Go get it. "Any phase of the game, I want to be dedicated and committed to helping this team." - Journal Sentinel

Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst is determined to avoid overworking several key players who are returning to the practice field this week in camp. "We've got to be smart on volume initially," he said. Perhaps the No. 1 player to monitor is tailback Chez Mellusi, who suffered a torn anterior ligament in his left knee last season at Rutgers. "You'd be crazy to have Chez just go 100 miles an hour right away," Chryst said.

UW is scheduled to hold its first practice Wednesday and the workload of Mellusi and fellow tailback Isaac Guerendo will be worth monitoring. "I feel great," Mellusi said Tuesday during the team's annual media day. "I'm full-go. I'm not limited. "We're going to see how it progresses throughout camp. They're going to watch my load. But I'm in a good spot and I'm just excited to play football." Guerendo sounded the same optimistic chord. "I'm full-go, 100 percent for Day 1," he said. "The mentality I have built is whatever opportunities I get, just take advantage of those. If anybody knows, it is me, that opportunities can be taken away like that." Mellusi broke the 100-yard mark in four of the nine games he played last season and finished with 815 yards, an average of 4.7 yards per carry, and five touchdowns. - Journal Sentinel

Wisconsin offensive line coach Bob Bostad hasn't forgotten the 2009 season when Wisconsin, because of injuries and illness, had to use three centers. That memory, as well as the recent departure of Cormac Sampson, led Bostad to make an intriguing move before UW opened preseason camp Wednesday. Tanor Bortolini, who has played center, guard and tackle and is arguably UW's most versatile offensive lineman, is working as the No. 2 center behind Joe Tippmann. "You've got to have guys at that spot," Bostad said of the critical center position. "You just don't plug (someone) in there. We have to build depth and quality there. He is going to be quality there. I can see that. We need to continue to do that with the loss of (Cormac). We are really in a race now." So, at least for now, Bortolini will back up Tippmann rather than vie to start at one of the guard spots. - Journal Sentinal
