  08/27/21 - Jarret DoegerSr/2023, Troy, 6-1, 199 (DS#39 QB) + More +

Pick any adjective for "good," and it can be applied to Jarret Doege's play. The redshirt junior quarterback, now entering his third season at WVU, has thrown for 3,405 yards in 21 games as a Mountaineer (243 yards per game) and has a solid 21-7 touchdown-to-interception ratio, tossing just one pick in every 70 passing attempts. He's been solid, steady, fine, worthy … make your pick. For West Virginia to advance from the lower half of the Big 12 standings and make a run into the top half, though, the Mountaineers need more - and fairly or unfairly, some of the most visible areas where improvement is needed by the team as a whole is at his position.

His 2020 completion percentage of 63.9% needs a jump of a few points, with accuracy on deep balls and better placement on shorter routes paramount. And while he's not going to be a dynamic open-field runner, creating some movement in the pocket to avoid rushers and create better throwing lanes would also help in a number of different respects. Make no mistake though. We're not talking about quantum leaps here. Just a few steps of improvement in accuracy, decision-making and pressure avoidance could make WVU's offense much more consistent and steady in 2021, and take it from "good" to something better. "My main focus has been moving in the pocket and realizing when to run," Doege said of his summer work. "Maybe just making one little small move in making that throw helps a lot. Throwing on the run and keeping my body out of awkward situations [will help] making throws." - Charleston Gazette-Mail

  08/20/21 - B.J. SmithrSr/2022, Troy, 5-08, 199 (DS#101 RB) + More +

Troy running back B.J. Smith is back on the practice field preparing for his sixth season with the Trojans. When the NCAA granted its student athletes an extra year of eligibility due to the effects of COVID-19, Smith took little to time to decide to take the NCAA up on its offer. Smith arrived in Troy prior to the start of the 2016 season. After a stellar career with some injuries mixed in, Smith is eager to have one more year with the Trojans. "I missed the last the three or four games (last season)," Smith said. "Politicallly, whenever you can get a degree paid for that's kind of like a slap in the face if you don't stay for it." Fans coming out to a game this season will notice that Smith will be dawning a new number. No longer number 26, Smith will now wear number three. "I kind of felt like it was time for a change," Smith said. "Changing and switching things up. I felt like going back to 2015 and high school. That was my number in high school." - Troy Messenger

  08/19/21 - Jarret DoegerSr/2023, Troy, 6-1, 199 (DS#39 QB) + More +

The West Virginia football team has built its offense around former Bowling Green State University quarterback Jarret Doege. Doege is set for his third season with the Mountaineers after leaving Bowling Green in May of 2019. Last season, Doege passed for 2,587 yards with 14 touchdowns and four interceptions in 10 games. His 258.7 passing yards per game ranked second in the Big 12 behind Oklahoma's Spencer Rattler, while his completion percentage (63) ranked third. "He's probably our most improved player in the offseason," West Virginia coach Neal Brown said at Big 12 media days. "He's moving better in the pocket, and he's ready to take the next step." - Toledo Blade

  05/26/21 - Jordan AnthonyrJr/2023, Troy, 6-0, 245 (DS#999 ILB) + More +

It took nearly 18 months, but Jordan Anthony has found a new home. The former Michigan linebacker announced Monday night that he has verbally committed to Troy University, a Sun Belt school in southern Alabama. Anthony first entered his name into the NCAA's popular transfer portal in December 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic swept the United States. He had accumulated enough credits to graduate from Michigan last July, making him eligible to transfer to another school and play immediately.

Yet, it took more than a year to find a landing spot. The 6-foot, 245-pound linebacker played three seasons at Michigan, appearing in 16 games as a rotational linebacker and on special teams. A former four-star recruit and top-100 prospect, Anthony came to Michigan from IMG Academy, one of the premier prep schools for athletes in the country. He amassed an impressive 79 tackles (five for a loss), 1/2 sack and three pass defended as a senior, even earning five-star status from recruiting service Rivals. - Ann Arbor News
