Western Kentucky will see a familiar face across the field at Houchens-Smith Stadium on Oct. 1. Former WKU quarterback Jarret Doege has officially been added to Troy's roster, after entering the transfer portal Sunday. The Hilltoppers are scheduled to ho st the Trojans on Oct. 1. "We've added a quarterback in really a unique situation," first-year Troy head coach Jon Sumrall said, according to a Friday article posted to the team's website. "Jarret has played a lot of college football, and there is no sub stitution for that experience. So, bringing him in is about what our quarterback room looks like concerning experience more so than whether we like who we have." Doege is already on campus at Troy, was at the team's practice Thursday and is eligible to p lay this season, according to the team's website. He transferred to WKU during the offseason from West Virginia and was in a competition for the Hilltoppers' starting quarterback spot with West Florida transfer Austin Reed. Doege entered the transf er portal Sunday, and after Thursday's practice WKU head coach Tyson Helton officially announced Reed would be the team's starting quarterback. "Doege did enter the portal. Wish him the best of luck," Helton said. "What a great guy, great competitor, rea lly good quarterback. Hate to lose him, but understand. He's a competitor and I get it. In today's portal world and all those things, I don't blame the guy, but going to miss the guy because he's a good person, good teammate and I wish him the best of lu ck." - BG Daily News

Former Bowling Green quarterback Jarret Doege has entered the transfer portal for the third time. The sixth-year signal-caller - whose next school will be his fourth - put his name in the portal Sunday, less than two weeks before Western Kentucky's seaso n opener. Doege played for the Falcons in 2017 and 2018, throwing 39 touchdowns against 15 interceptions in 19 games. He was the MAC's second-leading passer in 2018, racking up 2,660 yards. Most recently, he quarterbacked West Virginia from 2019 to 2021. He recorded 40 touchdowns and 19 interceptions with the Mountaineers, helping them reach bowl games in his last two seasons in Morgantown. He entered the transfer portal after the 2021 season and committed to Western Kentucky in January. He was named to the Maxwell Award watch list in July, but appears to have lost the Western Kentucky quarterback battle. - Toledo Blade

WKU finished second nationally in scoring offense and total offense in last year's 9-5 season that saw Conference USA East Division and Boca Raton Bowl titles, but several of that team's most productive offensive players are now gone, including quarterba ck Bailey Zappe. The Hilltoppers are in the midst of a quarterback competition, with West Virginia transfer Jarret Doege and West Florida transfer Austin Reed the frontrunners for the starting job. Both have played well since WKU opened fall camp July 29 , according to Helton. "Love them both. They're both doing outstanding. It's a very, very close competition," coach Tyson Helton said. "I thought they both did a great job today. We've got another week. We've got another week and another scrimmage and it 's a close battle. I think everybody on this team loves them both. We can win with both of them, so we've just got to see where it goes." - BG Daily News

West Virginia will finish its season in a bowl game. Sure beats Saturday night inside mostly empty Memorial Stadium in Kansas. Jarret Doege threw for 170 yards and three touchdowns, Leddie Brown ran for 156 yards and another score, and the resilient Moun taineers held off the Jayhawks 34-28 to reach the six-win plateau that qualifies them for the postseason. Winston Wright Jr. had two TD catches and Tony Mathis Jr. added 118 yards rushing for the Mountaineers (6-6, 4-5 Big 12), who also got two picks in the end zone from Josh Chandler-Semedo in beating the Jayhawks for the eighth straight time. Jalon Daniels gave Kansas (2-10, 1-8) a chance with his touchdown run with 1:46 left, but the Jayhawks had no timeouts left and were forced to try an onside kick . The Mountaineers recovered it and ran out the clock. Gavin Potter had a pick-6 for the Jayhawks that made it 21-all in the second half. Suddenly, Texas has just a week left in a stunningly bad season under first-year coach Steve Sarkisian. West Virginia will get one more chance to avoid joining the Longhorns in ending the year in late November. Jared Doege threw three touchdown passes an d Leddie Brown rushed for 158 yards and a score to lead West Virginia to a 31-23 victory over Texas on Saturday, handing the Longhorns their sixth straight loss and eliminating them from bowl consideration. West Virginia (5-6, 3-5 Big 12) snapped a two-g ame losing streak and kept its own postseason hopes alive but needs to win its final game next weekend. "It gets us to five," West Virginia coach Neal Brown said. "It keeps us alive for another week." Texas (4-7, 2-6) couldn't overcome another double-dig it deficit. The Longhorns will finish with a losing record and miss a bowl for the first time since 2016.The losing streak for Texas is its longest since it dropped eight in a row in 1956. "We just haven't broken through yet, and that's the bigges t frustrating part," Sarkisian said. "Every game, it seems like there is a different story to tell of why it didn't happen. I hate it for the guys because they bring it every day." Texas never led but had two chances to potentially tie the score in the f inal three minutes. The Longhorns drove to the West Virginia 30. But on fourth down, Casey Thompson was intercepted by Sean Mahone at the 6. West Virginia then drove to the Texas 36. The Mountaineers went for it on fourth down rather than attempt a long field goal, but Doege threw incomplete into the end zone and Texas got one last chance with 36 seconds left. The Longhorns couldn't get past midfield and Hudson Card's fourth-down pass fell incomplete. Texas was outgained 459 yards to 355, but it was the big play that kept the Longhorns in range. - West Virginia/AP College Football

West Virginia finally put together a solid effort after blowout losses to No. 22 Iowa State the past three seasons. Jarret Doege threw three touchdown passes, Leddie Brown ran for two scores and West Virginia upset the Cyclones 38-31 on Saturday. West Vi rginia (4-4, 2-3 Big 12) came alive on offense after averaging 20 points in its first four conference games. "We wanted to make a statement of how good a football team that we actually are," Doege said. Iowa State (5-3, 3-2) was missing leading tackler M ike Rose because of an undisclosed injury and the league's top defense gave up a season-high 492 yards. The linebacker had started all 45 previous games in his career. The Cyclones had kept their seven previous opponents under 350 yards.Iowa State 's chances of reaching the Big 12 championship game for a second straight season took a huge hit. West Virginia "played a great football game," Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said. "From my standpoint, a lot of credit to coach (Neal) Brown and his kids. We have respect for who they are and what they are." Breece Hall rushed for 167 yards, including a 70-yard TD on Iowa State's third play from scrimmage. But he fumbled reaching for the end zone in a pile of players for the potential tying touchdown with about 6 minutes left and West Virginia's Alonzo Addae recovered. The play held up upon review. - West Virginia/AP College Football

Pick any adjective for "good," and it can be applied to Jarret Doege's play. The redshirt junior quarterback, now entering his third season at WVU, has thrown for 3,405 yards in 21 games as a Mountaineer (243 yards per game) and has a solid 21-7 touchdow n-to-interception ratio, tossing just one pick in every 70 passing attempts. He's been solid, steady, fine, worthy … make your pick. For West Virginia to advance from the lower half of the Big 12 standings and make a run into the top half, though, the Mountaineers need more - and fairly or unfairly, some of the most visible areas where improvement is needed by the team as a whole is at his position. His 2020 completion percentage of 63.9% needs a jump of a few points, with accuracy on deep balls and better placement on shorter routes paramount. And while he's not going to be a dynamic open-field runner, creating some movement in the pocket to avoid rushers and create better throwing lanes would also help in a number of different respects. Make no mistake though. We're not talking about quantum leaps here. Just a few steps of improvement in accuracy, decision-making and pressure avoidance could make WVU's offense much more consistent and steady in 2021, and take it from "good" to something bett er. "My main focus has been moving in the pocket and realizing when to run," Doege said of his summer work. "Maybe just making one little small move in making that throw helps a lot. Throwing on the run and keeping my body out of awkward situations [will help] making throws." - Charleston Gazette-Mail

"He's probably our most improved player in the offseason," West Virginia coach Neal Brown said at Big 12 media days. "He's moving better in the pocket, and he's ready to take the next step." - Toledo Blade

Quarterback Garret Doege is good, it's just that he's been overshadowed by Sam Ehlinger, Purdy and Spencer Rattler. The junior has 1,991 passing yards against Big 12 opponents, second to Rattler's 2,029 yards. He's thrown the fewest interceptions (three) in conference games. He's hooked up with Wright Winston on a 70-yard passing play, and if the Cyclones have a defensive flaw, it's over-the-top passes in the middle of the field. - Des Moines Register

Brown and Sinkfield both finished with care er highs of 123 yards and two rushing TDs in the Mountaineers' season opener. It marked the first time that two West Virginia players went over 100 yards in the same game since the 2017 season. After weeks of competition, West Virginia University football coach Neal Brown finally made the call in the battle to be his starting quarterback. Brown announced during his weekly radio show Thursday that junior Jarret Doege would start under center whe n the Mountaineers open their 2020 season Sept. 12 versus Eastern Kentucky (noon, FS1). Doege emerged as the winner of a two-man race between him and Austin Kendall, the Oklahoma transfer who started the first nine games of 2019. "We had a long quarterba ck battle and we really feel like we have two quarterbacks on our roster that can win Big 12 games right now, which I think is a huge positive," Brown said. "We hoped the competition was going to go through the spring and we would be able to name a start er a little earlier but it didn't work out that way."Doege, a transfer from Bowling Green, started the final three contests for the Mountaineers last season, leading WVU to Big 12 road victories at then-No. 24 Kansas State and at TCU, which was fi ghting for bowl eligibility in that game. Those were sandwiched around a 20-13 home loss to No. 22 Oklahoma State. In four appearances, Doege hit on 79 of 120 passes for 818 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions. He threw for 4,041 yards and 39 scores in two seasons at Bowling Green. - Charleston Gazette-Mail

From the looks of the West Virginia University football team's accountability team leaderboard, quarterback Jarret Doege hasn't missed much of a step since the end of the 2019 season. Doege, who saw his first Mountaineer action in the last four games of 2019 after transferring from Bowling Green, led WVU to wins in two of its last three games. WVU coach Neal Brown named Doege a captain for one of the program's 10 accountability teams, groups of players who keep each other on task throughout the offseaso n. When the football team posted its latest accountability team leader board, Doege's team was No. 1 on the list."He's done a good job and it's encouraging to see that," WVU coach Neal Brown said Thursday. "I think he's taken ownership on that acc ountability team. He's been creative." Accountability team captains are given guidelines on how to lead their groups, but they're given plenty of latitude on how to communicate with their team members and earn points. Doege has excelled in that area, but Brown said he can't rest on his laurels. "It's early, man," Brown said. "These teams go all the way to the first day of fall, so he's got to maintain it. They're all chasing him." Both Doege and fellow quarterback Austin Kendall are chasing each other f or the 2020 starting quarterback spot in Morgantown. - Charleston Gazette-Mail

Jarret Doege threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Esdale with 2:10 left and West Virginia ended coach Neal Brown's first season with a 20-17 win on Friday that kept TCU from getting bowl eligible. The game-winning drive by West Virginia (5-7, 3-6 Big 12) was extended by two huge penalties. There was a pass interference call on a fourth down, and then TCU defensive tackle Ross Blacklock was ejected for targeting for a hit on Doege on a third-and-12 incompletion. That shot came only two plays before t he TD to Esdale, who managed to get his feet just inside the pylon in the front corner of the end zone. TCU (5-7, 3-6) isn't bowl eligible for only the third time in Gary Patterson's 19 full seasons as head coach. The Horned Frogs lost four of thei r last five games. All those losses were by a touchdown or less, including losses to Big 12 co-leaders Baylor and Oklahoma. Doege completed 20 of 35 passes for 158 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. The Bowling Green transfer will maintai n his junior status next season after playing in only four games. Horned Frogs freshman quarterback Max Duggan was 15-of-36 passing for 144 yards with two interceptions as both teams had fewer than 300 total yards on a cool, damp day. TCU had 297 yards, and West Virginia 244. TCU went ahead 17-10 when Jalen Reagor had a 70-yard punt return for a touchdown early in the third quarter. - AP College Football

West Virginia coach Neal Brown was staring down the prospects of a six-game losing streak amid his first season in Morgantown, a streak of futility unmatched by the Mountaineers since 1986. Instead, he walked out of Kansas State with a foundational win f or his vast rebuilding effort. Jarret Doege threw for 234 yards and three scores in place of Austin Kendall, and Hakeem Bailey made the play of the game when he picked off the Wildcats' Skylar Thompson in the closing seconds, allowing the Mountaineers to escape with a 24-20 victory Saturday night. "This is a huge win. It felt like a long time coming," Brown said. "Kind of been knocking on the door. I really felt like we'd be in a position at some point to win a game that maybe we shouldn't have. This is big for our program, big for our players and I'm proud of our guys."The Mountaineers (4-6, 2-5 Big 12) hadn't scored more than 17 points in their last four games, prompting the change at quarterback. Doege, who hadn't started since last November when he was still at Bowling Green, responded by throwing all three of his TD passes on crucial third downs. The biggest? A 50-yard heave on third-and-22 that gave the Mountaineers the lead late. "I was just thinking, "Get through my progression," Doege said, "but I forced out and I saw him wide open and luckily got it off right before I got hit. I didn't know if he caught it until I looked up and saw him in the end zone." The Wildcats (6-4, 3-4) had plenty of chances to answer, but they turned the ball over on downs and then punted before their final drive. - West Virginia/AP College Football
