  06/04/22 - Javon SolomonrJr/2024, Troy, 6-1, 246 (DS#13 OLB) + More +

Recently, Troy's very own Jones Medical Supply announced that it had signed name, image and likeness (NIL) deals with Troy football players Scott Taylor Renfroe and Carlton Martial. Jones Medical Supply President Jason Jones is a staunch supporter of Trojan athletics and Jones Medical Supply - which has locations in Troy and Greenville - is already a partner with Troy University as the athletic department's official oxygen supplier. Jones also wanted to support the athletes.

"We're all about partnering with Troy Athletics in any way we can, that's first and foremost," Jones said. "No. 2, if we can help a student-athlete legally we want to be involved with that. "Those are the two biggest things for us and just from a marketing standpoint it works. We just had an interview with a national publication and that led to it being ran in another national publication and now I'm talking to you guys about it. These are things, as a businessman, you couldn't ask for anything better." NIL was passed in 2021 by the NCAA to allow athletes to sign sponsorship deals and make money off their name, image and likeness as college athletes. Athletes all over the country have become spokespeople for brands, sold their likeness for merchandise and many other marketing opportunities. According to HME News - a national health and medical equipment publication - Jones Medical Supply is one of the first durable medical equipment (DME) companies to ink an NIL deal with athletes. - Troy Messenger

  05/24/22 - Peter CostellirSo/2026, Troy, 6-3, 225 (DS#999 QB) + More +

New Troy Trojans quarterback Peter Costelli will arrive on campus in June and the California gunslinger has already set some lofty goals. Costelli was a four-star dual-threat quarterback from California coming out of Mission Viejo High School and will come to the Trojans as one of the highest rated recruits in school history. Before taking his visit to Troy's campus in recent weeks, Costelli said he had never even been to Alabama. "It was good, I got to see the campus and the area around it," Costelli said of his trip. "I liked it a lot. That was my first time in Alabama. It's going to get some getting used to but it's going to be a good change for me. I'm looking forward to it." The 6-foot-3-inch, 212-pounder was considered the "crown jewel" of Utah's 2021 signing class but after redshirting his freshman year there, he decided it was time for a change.

"It just wasn't the right fit for me," Costelli emphasized. "I love the team and everything there but it just wasn't the best fit for me." Costelli was a big signing for Troy after the departure of former Troy quarterback Kyle Toole during spring practices and makes the quarterback competition at Troy going into the summer even more interesting as he, returning starter Gunnar Watson, redshirt freshman Quayde Hawkins and incoming Brantley freshman Tucker Kilcrease all compete at the position. - Troy Messenger

  05/22/22 - Peter CostellirSo/2026, Troy, 6-3, 225 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Ever since the end of spring, Troy football coach Jon Sumrall has said that the Trojans would be adding a quarterback to the roster this offseason and on Wednesday they landed a big one - figuratively and literally - in former Utah gunslinger Peter Costelli. The former four-star recruit and 6-foot-3-inch, 212-pound quarterback announced his commitment to Troy on Twitter on Thursday. Costelli's comes to Troy as one of the top players to ever commit to the program. The California native entered the transfer portal following his freshman season at Utah after being Utah's top signee in the 2021 class. Costelli redshirted in 2021 and will have all four years of eligibility left at Troy.

While Costelli has prototypical size and arm strength of pocket quarterbacks, he was also one of the fastest players on the West Coast during his high school career. He was the 10th rated dual-threat quarterback in the entire country coming out of high school, according to 247 Sports. As a junior, Costelli threw for 1,992 yards and 23 touchdowns along with 354 yards four touchdowns rushing. He didn't play in his senior season in 2020 due to California schools pushing the 2020 season into the spring of 2021. Costelli graduated in January of 2021 and enrolled at Utah immediately following his high school graduation. - Troy Messenger

Washington State dipped into the transfer portal and added to its pool of promising young pass-catchers, signing former Oregon State receiver Zeriah Beason on Wednesday. Beason has three years of eligibility remaining after appearing in 20 games with 13 starts across the past two seasons with the Beavers. The 6-foot, 195-pound native of Duncanville, Texas, had an encouraging start to his collegiate career, recording 148 yards and three touchdowns on 16 catches over five games - all starts - as a freshman in 2020. He had an underwhelming campaign last year and finished as the Beavers' fifth-most productive receiver with 236 yards and a TD on 20 receptions. - Seattle Times

  11/27/21 - Jarret DoegerSr/2023, Troy, 6-1, 199 (DS#39 QB) + More +

West Virginia will finish its season in a bowl game. Sure beats Saturday night inside mostly empty Memorial Stadium in Kansas. Jarret Doege threw for 170 yards and three touchdowns, Leddie Brown ran for 156 yards and another score, and the resilient Mountaineers held off the Jayhawks 34-28 to reach the six-win plateau that qualifies them for the postseason. Winston Wright Jr. had two TD catches and Tony Mathis Jr. added 118 yards rushing for the Mountaineers (6-6, 4-5 Big 12), who also got two picks in the end zone from Josh Chandler-Semedo in beating the Jayhawks for the eighth straight time. Jalon Daniels gave Kansas (2-10, 1-8) a chance with his touchdown run with 1:46 left, but the Jayhawks had no timeouts left and were forced to try an onside kick. The Mountaineers recovered it and ran out the clock. Gavin Potter had a pick-6 for the Jayhawks that made it 21-all in the second half. But the Jayhawks made too many mistakes on the other side of the ball, getting stopped three times on fourth down and finishing 3 of 6 in the red zone. - West Virginia/AP College Football

  11/20/21 - Jarret DoegerSr/2023, Troy, 6-1, 199 (DS#39 QB) + More +

Suddenly, Texas has just a week left in a stunningly bad season under first-year coach Steve Sarkisian. West Virginia will get one more chance to avoid joining the Longhorns in ending the year in late November. Jared Doege threw three touchdown passes and Leddie Brown rushed for 158 yards and a score to lead West Virginia to a 31-23 victory over Texas on Saturday, handing the Longhorns their sixth straight loss and eliminating them from bowl consideration. West Virginia (5-6, 3-5 Big 12) snapped a two-game losing streak and kept its own postseason hopes alive but needs to win its final game next weekend. "It gets us to five," West Virginia coach Neal Brown said. "It keeps us alive for another week." Texas (4-7, 2-6) couldn't overcome another double-digit deficit. The Longhorns will finish with a losing record and miss a bowl for the first time since 2016.

The losing streak for Texas is its longest since it dropped eight in a row in 1956. "We just haven't broken through yet, and that's the biggest frustrating part," Sarkisian said. "Every game, it seems like there is a different story to tell of why it didn't happen. I hate it for the guys because they bring it every day." Texas never led but had two chances to potentially tie the score in the final three minutes. The Longhorns drove to the West Virginia 30. But on fourth down, Casey Thompson was intercepted by Sean Mahone at the 6. West Virginia then drove to the Texas 36. The Mountaineers went for it on fourth down rather than attempt a long field goal, but Doege threw incomplete into the end zone and Texas got one last chance with 36 seconds left. The Longhorns couldn't get past midfield and Hudson Card's fourth-down pass fell incomplete. Texas was outgained 459 yards to 355, but it was the big play that kept the Longhorns in range. - West Virginia/AP College Football

Jamontez Woods scored two touchdowns, KJ Robertson returned an interception for a score, and Troy defeated South Alabama 31-24 on Saturday night. After Desmond Trotter's 4-yard run gave South Alabama a 7-0 lead, Troy (5-4, 3-2 Sun Belt Conference) responded with 31 consecutive points. Bruce Brooks kicked a short field goal, Woods scored on two short runs and Tez Johnson had a 31-yard TD run before Robertson gave the Trojans a 31-7 lead with his interception return. But Trotter connected with Terrion Avery on a short touchdown pass to draw the Jaguars within 31-14 at the half. Trotter and Avery connected again late in the third quarter to make it 31-21. In the fourth quarter, USA (5-4, 2-4) drove inside the 20 with about six minutes left but had to settle for Diego Guajardo's 34-yard field goal. The Jaguars had one more possession; Trotter's fourth-down pass falling incomplete at their own 29. Trotter completed 20 of 32 passes for 138 yards. Avery had a game-high 80 yards rushing on 23 carries to go with his two receiving TDs. - Troy/AP College Football

  10/30/21 - Jarret DoegerSr/2023, Troy, 6-1, 199 (DS#39 QB) + More +

West Virginia finally put together a solid effort after blowout losses to No. 22 Iowa State the past three seasons. Jarret Doege threw three touchdown passes, Leddie Brown ran for two scores and West Virginia upset the Cyclones 38-31 on Saturday. West Virginia (4-4, 2-3 Big 12) came alive on offense after averaging 20 points in its first four conference games. "We wanted to make a statement of how good a football team that we actually are," Doege said. Iowa State (5-3, 3-2) was missing leading tackler Mike Rose because of an undisclosed injury and the league's top defense gave up a season-high 492 yards. The linebacker had started all 45 previous games in his career. The Cyclones had kept their seven previous opponents under 350 yards.

Iowa State's chances of reaching the Big 12 championship game for a second straight season took a huge hit. West Virginia "played a great football game," Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said. "From my standpoint, a lot of credit to coach (Neal) Brown and his kids. We have respect for who they are and what they are." Breece Hall rushed for 167 yards, including a 70-yard TD on Iowa State's third play from scrimmage. But he fumbled reaching for the end zone in a pile of players for the potential tying touchdown with about 6 minutes left and West Virginia's Alonzo Addae recovered. The play held up upon review. - West Virginia/AP College Football
