Veteran Clemson safety Lannden Zanders has made the "incredibly difficult decision" to retire from football after an injury-plagued career. Zanders, a fourth-year player who was expected to compete for reserve snaps at safety in 2022, cited three shoulder injuries over the past year as his main reasoning for stepping away from "the game I love" in a Wednesday Twitter post. "While I've worked hard with our trainers and doctors to return to the field, I just do not believe I am physically able to be the kind of player I have always prided myself on being," Zanders wrote.

A 6-foot-1 safety and former three-star 2019 recruit from North Carolina's Crest High School, Zanders played in 25 games with 10 starts over three seasons at Clemson. The 21-year-old safety finished his career with 57 tackles, five tackles for loss, four pass breakups and three sacks across 511 defensive snaps. After appearing in 14 games as a true freshman in 2019, Zanders played the entire 2020 season with a torn labrum in his shoulder and suffered another season-ending shoulder injury in Clemson's 2021 season opener against Georgia. "Though I am disappointed I will not play football again, I leave the game with no regrets," Zanders wrote. "I am proud I got to play beside so many great teammates and for so many great coaches." - The State

One-time Clemson starting safety Lannden Zanders is giving up football because of continuing problems with his injured right shoulder. Zanders has had three surgeries to repair and rehab a torn labrum. He was cleared to compete at the Tigers' fall camp, which opens Friday. However, Zanders said on social media Wednesday he felt he was not "physically able" to be the player he had been and made the choice to step away from the game. Zanders started nine games for Clemson in 2020, then sustained a season-ending shoulder injury in the Tigers' 10-3 loss to eventual national champion Georgia in last year's opening game. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound fourth-year junior from Shelby, North Carolina, has had three surgeries to try and fix the injury. He leaves the program with 57 tackles, three sacks and four pass breakups in 25 games, 10 of them as a starter. - AP College Football

After watching spring practice, Memphis offensive coordinator Tim Cramsey said that running back Andarius Coffey is a player under the radar to keep an eye on. Said Cramsey: "You don't look at him as a 200-pound kid but we dropped him in the slot and told him to run routes so he's done a good job there. He's a piece you can move around, he's a guy you can give the ball in space and he's a little more electric than some of the guys in that room." Andarius, listed as 6-0, 181, was out injured last season and played sparingly as a freshman in 2020. Andarius played quarterback at Winona High School in Mississippi and was expected to try defensive back in college. He threw for 3,471 career yards and 39 touchdowns while rushing for 3,399 yards and 48 touchdown as a senior. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

A new era of Hawaii football will officially be ushered in on Aug. 27 when the Rainbow Warriors take on the Commodores at Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex as Timmy Chang makes his head coaching debut. In the 31 days between the start of camp and the start of the season, Chang will make one of his first big decisions at the helm of the program: Picking a starting quarterback. With two-year starter Chevan Cordeiro now at San Jose State, the 'Bows have a void under center and have whittled the competition down to five: Brayden Schager, Cammon Cooper, Armani Edden, Jake Farrell and Joey Yellen.

Yellen, the lone player in the group who didn't participate in spring ball, joined UH in the summer after transferring from Pittsburgh, where he spent the 2021 season as a backup with first-round NFL Draft pick Kenny Pickett. "It's exciting. It's certainly different from some of the camps I've gone through in my past years but it's exciting," Yellen said. "I think we've got a good thing going in the right direction, just gotta keep putting some good days together and get ready for Vanderbilt." Despite the late start, Yellen remains squarely in the race, taking multiple reps with the first-team offense on Wednesday. "I'm confident. If you asked any quarterback here, they should say that, right? If you're not, what are you doing? You gotta be confident, you gotta feel like you're the right guy for the job, and I think everyone should feel that way," Yellen said. "I think there's always gonna be room for improvement on the first day, but I thought we have a lot of young guys around, I'm new, it was just a lot of new things for everybody. I think that kind of showed at some parts but I thought it was a good first day. I think we're headed in the right direction." - Khon2.com

Mel Tucker has his Michigan State football team trending upward. The Spartans went 11-2 and won the Peach Bowl over Pittsburgh last season after going 2-5 in Tucker's debut season. Tucker and his coaching staff will be asking a former University of Wisconsin running back to be a key contributor on offense this season as they try to replace Kenneth Walker III, last season's Doak Walker Award and Big Ten running back of the year winner.

Jalen Berger, a four-star recruit in the Badgers' 2020 class, transferred to Michigan State after he was dismissed from UW's team in October. He's competing with another transfer, Jarek Broussard, for the Spartans' starting role. "He's a very talented young man," Tucker said about Berger. "He really bought in right away to our culture and what we're about. He's really started to bond with teammates, he's really opened up. "I'm glad we got him." Tucker said one of Berger's best traits is his versatility, capable of being a runner and receiver out of the backfield. Berger was UW's leading rusher during the COVID-shortened 2020 season, but he then fell on the depth chart entering the 2021 season. - Wisconsin State Journal

Auburn's wide receiver corps will be one of the more intriguing groups to watch in fall camp, given what the Tigers lost from last year's roster, what they bring back and what they've added to the room. Shedrick Jackson may be the most proven of the bunch, given his years of experience and that he's the team's leading returning receiver, but last year was his first truly impactful season on the Plains. The Tigers also bring back Ja'Varrius Johnson, who started a handful of games last season but has seen his first few years hampered by injuries, as well as Malcolm Johnson Jr., who also earned a handful of starts in 2021 and has shown glimpses of being a downfield playmaker but just doesn't have a lot of in-game experience.

Auburn also returns a handful of other players from last season, including Tar'Varish Dawson Jr., who earned a starting job in fall camp a year ago but never saw the field after a preseason setback. He has been a different player this offseason, according to Harsin, and could carve out a role in the passing game this fall if he continues his upward trajectory. Ze'Vian Capers is another returning option who has progressed and could emerge as that bigger, longer target Auburn has lacked in the passing game. - Birmingham News
