In eight days, the University of Hawaii football team will open training camp with an open competition at quarterback. Head coach Timmy Chang and offensive coordinator Ian Shoemaker will wait until at least two weeks of practices before setting a depth chart at the signal-calling position. The Rainbow Warriors are seeking a replacement for Chevan Cordeiro, a two-time captain who transferred to San Jose State after the 2021 season. The Warriors listed six quarterbacks on their tentative training camp roster: Brayden Schager, Cammon Cooper, Joey Yellen, Jake Farrell, Connor Apo and Armani Edden. Chad Owens Jr., whose father was a standout UH slotback who enjoyed a lengthy pro career, appears to be moving to receiver.

As a true freshman in 2021, Schager was 2-1 as a starter in place of an injured Cordeiro. He directed the first series in the spring game in April. Cooper transferred from Washington State in January. Yellen joined the Warriors this summer after transferring from Pittsburgh, where he was the top understudy to Kenny Pickett, a 2022 NFL first-round pick. "Joey and Cam have a chance to compete (for the starter's job)," Chang said of the extended evaluation period. "We've got to give them that shot." - Honolulu Advertiser

Ty Washington won't need a phasing-in period for any of the multiple uses of the tight end at Arkansas. The polished 6-2, 240-pounder did it all at Lee County (Ga.) as a three-year starter. "I played everywhere," Washington said. "I was split out. Outside, inside, hand in the ground, as a fullback, behind the line. It didn't really matter. I played every way that they needed me." When the Kendal Briles offense is in full flow, the tight end is all over the place, as an in-line blocker, a split-out pass catcher or a motioning H-back lead blocker. "It's the same thing here really, just everywhere," Washington said. "It hasn't changed. That makes it easier on me, not just having to learn just one position, hand down or something. I know everything about the playbook and knowing all the things I have to do, from slot, hand in the ground, fullback, tight end. That makes it easier."

Washington played prep ball at a Class 6A school that led the state of Georgia with 40 graduates on college football rosters in 2019. Coach Dean Fabrizio felt the impact of Washington's loss while going through spring drills with the Trojans. "What Tyrus does, and we're really feeling that now, was he fills the role of three guys," Fabrizio said. "He's got the ability to put his hand in the ground next to a tackle and down block and double team people. He's got the ability to line up in the backfield and kick people out or isolate on people. And he's got the ball skills to split out wide and catch the ball, too. "So he really creates a big personnel advantage for an offensive coach...There's a lot of guys who run out there and catch balls. A lot of guys can put their hand on the ground and block. There ain't a lot who can do both." - Northwest Arkansas Times

Indiana coach Tom Allen has been hosting players at his house by position group this summer and posting group photos on his Twitter account. On Thursday night, he hosted the wide receivers, which led to him formally confirming former Lawrence North star Donaven McCulley has joined that position group after starting four games at quarterback for IU last season. The move was initially reported in June when IU play-by-play man Don Fischer said McCulley would move during a radio interview.

Allen told IndyStar the decision to move was actually McCulley's idea. The 6-5, 210-pounder has had an interest in the position for years, Allen said, and believed it would be his quickest path to playing time this season with there being extensive competition at quarterback, with the addition of Missouri transfer Connor Bazelak and return of a healthy Jack Tuttle. Allen said he was thrilled with the move, as McCulley's length, athleticism and skill set gives him the opportunity to make an immediate impact. The Hoosiers lost their two starting outside wide receivers in Ty Fryfogle and Miles Marshall. McCulley is expected to compete for those spots along with North Carolina transfer Emery Simmons and junior college transfer Cam Camper among others. - Indianapolis Star/News

Nevada historically has relied on an effective passing game, but last year's starting quarterback, Carson Strong, now is an undrafted free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles. Oklahoma State transfer Shane Illingworth is the most likely replacement. How effective will Illingworth be for the Wolf Pack? The ex-Oklahoma State backup was a four-star recruit coming out of high school and had plenty of Power Five offers. He didn't see the field much in Stillwater, Okla., aside from a start against Missouri State when the usual starter was in COVID-19 protocols. He'll have a tall task with an inexperienced offense around him. - The Gazette

With a little over a month to go before the start of training camp, the Arizona football roster is all but set. The Wildcats are expected to have 54 new players - nearly half their projected roster of 112-113 - when they open camp Aug. 3, UA coach Jedd Fisch said. All those players have joined the program since early signing day in December. Arizona also has taken advantage of changes to how scholarships can be allocated. Linebackers Ammon Allen and Dante Smith have received scholarships. Fisch added that he expects "no surprises" in terms of the roster between now and August. - Arizona Star News

The offseason prior to Kaleb Brown's arrival with Ohio State football included some medical attention. The incoming freshman receiver from Chicago said on Instagram that he underwent an operation to repair loose cartilage in a knee. Brown said he the surgery took place Wednesday morning. "Smooth surgery this morning & a slight recovery for a few weeks," Brown wrote. The post no longer appears on his account, but Bucknuts posted a screen grab from Brown's Instagram story. The 5-11, 195-pound Brown missed most of his senior season at St. Rita High School with a knee injury. The No. 79 prospect and No. 13 receiver per the 247 Sports database is part of a four-man incoming class of receivers, along with Kyion Grayes, Kaleb Burton and Kojo Antwi. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Demarkcus Bowman is verified fast. The former Florida Gators running back posted sub-4.5-second speed in the 40-yard dash in the past and finished in 2nd place in the 2019 Florida 4A 100-meter event with a time of 11.01 - less than a second off Olympic qualifying time. That's why, three years since the state track meet, Bowman's speed is an impactful addition to UCF's running back room. He joins a running back room that features fifth-year senior Isaiah Bowser, junior Johnny Richardson, redshirt juniors Mark-Antony Richards and RJ Harvey, redshirt senior Trillion Coles and freshman Jordan McDonald.

With Bowser and Coles out of eligibility following this season, Bowman will have an opportunity to compete for the starting job as the Knights transition to the Big 12 Conference in 2023. Because he's transferred once before, UCF's inaugural year in the Power Five league coincides with when Bowman could first see the field in Orlando, unless he applies for a waiver from the NCAA for this season. What's most intriguing about Bowman is his potential. The 5-foot-9, 192-pound speedster has barely had the chance to use his elite speed in college. At Clemson as a freshman in 2020, Bowman only appeared in two games before deciding to enter the NCAA transfer portal for the first time in October that year. - Orlando Sentinel

Former Florida Gators running back Demarkcus Bowman is transferring to UCF, he announced on social media Monday. "Orlando vs. everybody," Bowman wrote on Twitter, tagging UCF coach Gus Malzahn among others in his announcement. Bowman is the second ex-Gator to head to the Orlando school this offseason joining tight end Kemore Gamble. This past season in Gainesville, Bowman saw action in five games, four of which he served as a reserve running back while rushing 14 times for 81 yards.

Prior to Florida, Bowman spent his freshman season at Clemson in 2020. Taking a redshirt, the 5-foot-9, 192-pound running back appeared in two games before transferring to Florida. Because he's transferred once before, Bowman will have to sit a season at UCF before seeing the field, unless he receives a waiver from the NCAA. UCF is his third school in two years. Regardless, the redshirt sophomore will have at least four years of eligibility remaining thanks to an extra year granted to athletes from the NCAA due to the COVID-19 pandemic. - Orlando Sentinel

The Gators' backfield took a hit Friday with Demarkcus Bowman's decision to transfer from the Florida football program, a source confirmed to The Gainesville Sun. Bowman is the fourth UF player to exit the program within the last week, following the departures of Mordecai McDaniel, Fenley Graham and Chris Thomas Jr. Bowman seemingly confirmed his imminent departure on social media, saying "I love the Ville", followed by a sad face emoji, on his Twitter account.

It's not Bowman's first time seeking out a new college destination. A former standout at Lakeland High, Bowman initially signed with Clemson University as a five-star prospect before opting to transfer after the 2020 season. During his first season with the program, Bowman found himself behind Dameon Pierce, Malik Davis and Nay'Quan Wright on Florida's depth chart, resulting in just four appearances during the 2021 campaign. He finished the season with just 14 carries for 81 yards, though Bowman was expected to compete for a larger role during coach Billy Napier's inaugural season with the program. - Gainesville Sun

After being forced by injuries into starting at quarterback as a true freshman, Indiana sophomore and former Lawrence North star Donaven McCulley may be making a position change. IU play-by-play announcer Don Fischer appeared on Indiana Sports Talk on 107.5 FM The Fan last week and was asked about the quarterback position. Fischer said the Hoosiers had decided to move McCulley to receiver. An IU spokesman said Friday the program would have no comment and would neither confirm nor deny that McCulley had been moved.

He is still listed as a quarterback on IU's roster. "They've taken Donaven McCulley out of the quarterback role and they moved him to wide receiver," Fischer said on the radio show. "I think you're going to see some spectacular things out of this kid before he's done at Indiana. He's a terrific athlete. He's 6-5. He can really, really run. That's one thing he did last year when he was called upon to play at quarterback." Without addressing McCulley's status specifically, IU coach Tom Allen said in an interview with the Herald-Times and IndyStar in May the quarterback competition had been narrowed to two men - Missouri transfer Connor Bazelak and fifth-year senior Jack Tuttle. - Indianapolis Star/News

The spring game for SMU wasn't exactly a spring game. Still, it did give a look at a potential depth chart heading into summer. Of course, the "starters" and "backups" from the final spring showcase aren't written in stone for a Week 1 projection, but the defensive back groupings might've been the most interesting we saw. Specifically, the outside corners. Ar'mani Johnson and Sam Westfall, two seniors, got the starting nod, while Jahari Rogers and Bryce McMorris, the starters as freshmen a season ago, ran with the second team. This simply could be an ode to seniority by new SMU corners coach Rickey Hunley Jr., and a sign that starting jobs must be earned, or it could be the way the new regime sees things early on.

Considering last season, that would be interesting. Rogers, a highly-touted transfer from Florida, and McMorris, a true freshman playing corner for the first time, got a lot of experience a season ago as young starters. There were a lot of learning lessons, too. SMU's passing defense ranked 124th in the country, allowing an average of 278 yards per game and nearly 14 yards per completion. It was a glaring weakness for the Mustangs, and in losses against Houston, Cincinnati and Memphis, it was exposed. - Dallas Morning News

In its continuing efforts to mine the transfer market, Georgia Tech added a defensive player with some versatility coming from UCLA. Christian Burkhalter, who could be a fit at either linebacker or defensive end, announced his commitment to Tech on Wednesday via social media. From Mobile, Ala., Burkhalter was a 2021 signee with UCLA. He did not see game action in his lone season with the Bruins and entered the transfer portal in late April, just before the deadline for fall- and winter-sports athletes to be able to transfer and be eligible to compete in the 2022-23 academic year. Burkhalter was rated a three-star prospect and a top-500 prospect nationally (247Sports Composite). - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Tuesday was reporting day for summer football workouts at South Alabama, and the Jaguars added seven Division I transfers. Among the newcomers is defensive end Nathan Rawlins-Kibonge, an Oklahoma transfer with four seasons of eligibility remaining. Rawlins-Kibonge, originally from Portland, Ore., was rated a four-star prospect in the 2021 recruiting class. The 6-foot-6, 256-pound Rawlins-Kibonge did not see any game action at Oklahoma last season before entering the NCAA transfer portal at the end of April. He was a two-sport star at Jefferson High School in Portland, where he also excelled in basketball.

Also officially joining the Jaguars, but not previously announced publicly, are offensive tackle PJ Mixon (Jacksonville State) and kicker Jacob Meeks (Texas Tech). Mixon, originally from Montgomery, and Meeks both have one season of eligibility remaining. Rawlins-Kibonge, Mixon and Meeks join a group that also includes running backs Omni Wells (Mississippi State) and Marco Lee (Virginia Tech), offensive guard James Robinson (Tennessee) and safety Marvin Martin (Kansas State). All are expected to enroll in summer school classes and begin practice when the Jaguars open fall camp in early August. - Birmingham News

Jason Brooks was playing video games with a friend one day in high school when the friend, for no real reason, started calling Brooks by a different name. Queso. The name made Brooks laugh, so he added it to his Twitter handle. Soon, other friends picked up on it. Then his football coaches at Dobie High in Houston started calling him Queso, too. And it was official. Brooks had a new nickname.

Years later, he still answers to Queso. Still has cheese emojis on his Twitter handle. And in a little over a week, Queso comes to Stillwater. Brooks, a 6-foot-4, 295-pound offensive lineman, committed to the Oklahoma State football program in March, and he reports to campus on June 6 as one of three incoming players via the transfer portal. He and the others - offensive lineman Casey Collier and running back Deondre Jackson - will arrive next month looking to add depth at positions in need of extra bodies for the fall. - Daily Oklahoman

Marshall football head coach Charles Huff continues to utilize the transfer portal for one of the key areas of need on the offensive side of the ball, adding a second former Power Five lineman to the mix Thursday. Tim Lawson, who spent the last two seasons with the Louisville Cardinals, announced his commitment to the Thundering Herd on social media Thursday morning. Lawson adds to a running list of transfer portal pickups for Marshall and is the second offensive lineman to transfer from a Power Five program after ex-Rutgers big man Cedrice Paillant, who committed in mid-April.

For Lawson, the decision was easy, but multiple factors played in to his decision, including good first impressions by the coaching staff, Marshall's proven ability to produce NFL-caliber offensive linemen and familiarity with the offensive scheme. Listed at 6-foot-6 and weighing 305 pounds, Lawson adds a good deal of size to the offensive line and said he believes his experience at Louisville will translate well in Huntington. "I'm used to the game now. I'm used to college football," Lawson said. "I had my times where I seen how fast the game moves, and pretty much the same way how the offense is here, they pretty much run there at Marshall." A native of Fort Washington, Maryland, Lawson committed to Louisville after graduating from the National Christian Academy and spent two seasons with the Cardinals without appearing in any games. - Charleston Gazette
