Jashaud Stewart is Arkansas coach Sam Pittman's kind of player. A former 3-star prospect from Jonesboro, Stewart has positioned himself for significant snaps this season by doing one key thing: Play hard. Some defensive linemen excel on account of their sheer size or speed, or a combination of both. Stewart, who stands 6-2 and 243 pounds, is not the biggest or strongest player on the Razorbacks' defensive front. Arkansas State transfer Terry Hampton throws up the most weight in the group, and LSU transfer Landon Jackson checks in at an imposing 6-7.

No player in first-year defensive line coach Deke Adams' room, though, has the motor of Stewart. It is his calling card and ticket for more opportunity in his third year on campus. "I'm going to be honest, nobody can really match Jashaud Stewart's effort," offensive lineman Ty'Kieast Crawford said Wednesday. "Like, it's hard. I like the way he plays. He's strong. You can tell he is. "Once he gets into your chest you might want to make sure you get your hands on him because if you don't, he's already going to be by you." - Northwest Arkansas Times

Memphis football got a boost to its secondary Saturday with former Kentucky safety Joel Williams committing to the Tigers. Williams announced his decision on Twitter, and it comes after he entered the transfer portal on Aug. 8. He has three years of eligibility remaining and arrives as Memphis begins the fall semester Monday. Williams signed with Kentucky in 2020 and played in 16 games with five tackles over the past two seasons. He was a four-star recruit from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. If Williams is eligible to play immediately, he comes to Memphis as the team begins its final week of preseason practice.   South Alabama will play the 2022 football season without one of its most-experienced and respected defensive players. Safety Keith Gallmon is out for the season with a torn pectoral (chest) muscle suffered in the Jaguars' Aug. 13 scrimmage, head coach Kane Wommack said Saturday. Gallmon, a Mobile native and a three-year starter, was a first-team All-Sun Belt Conference pick in the preseason. "Unfortunately, we've lost Keith Gallmon for the season," Wommack said. "He's got a torn pectoral muscle that we're going to need to get fixed. If he's going to come back at full capacity, it's going to require season-ending surgery. … I hate to lose him, hate it for a guy that means so much to this program."

The 5-foot-9, 203-pound Gallmon, who played his high school ball at Mobile Christian, has started 35 consecutive games for the Jaguars and has played in 46 of a possible 47 games during his college career. He totaled a team-best 59 tackles in 2021, in addition to 2.5 tackles for loss, two pass breakups and an interception. At the end of spring practice, Gallmon was awarded the honorary No. 5 jersey for the Jaguars' Sept. 3 season-opener vs. Nicholls State. A different South Alabama player is chosen by the coaching staff each week during the season to wear the 5 jersey, given in remembrance of late Jaguars running back Anthony Mostella. - Birmingham News

The University of Hawaii at Manoa is moving forward to expand the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex that would increase its capacity to 17,000 fans. The plan is to have it ready for the 2023 football season. UH was able to expand what was once the practice field into a 9,300 stadium last year after the state abruptly shut down Aloha Stadium, leaving the Rainbow Warriors without a home field. Athletics Director David Matlin plans to ask the UH Board of Regents to approve a plan that would expand seating capacity to 17,000 fans. One of the main reasons is that UH runs the risk of not qualifying as an FBS or Division One program.

UH cites the NCAA rule that stated, "Once every two years on a rolling basis, the institution shall average at least 15,000 in actual or paid attendance for all home football games." Construction will be done from January to August next year, so it should be finished in time for the next football season. Former Gov. Neil Abercrombie is all for it and said it should have been done sooner. "It's gonna cost more because we didn't do what we should've done in the first place. Of course, it's gonna cost more, inflation, whether we can get supplies and all the rest of that stuff," said Abercrombie. The total cost is $30 million. UH said it will use money from unused existing funds. - Khon2.com

Moving to 2022, Charlotte must replace all three starting linebackers from a season ago, with Martin, Tyler Murray and Justin Whisenhunt moving on from the program. While there's a feeling of uncertainty with so many new faces, Healy feels confident in Boykins' abilities, labeling him as the "dude" of the linebacker corps and praising his work ethic throughout the offseason. Linebackers coach Adam Braithwaite echoed those comments, posing a challenge to the redshirt junior during the offseason. "He said, 'What do you want to be," Derek Boykins said, quoting Braithwaite. "You can be an All-American or you can be on the bench. It's up to you."

Boykins' work ethic both on the field and in the weight room has caught the attention of the staff and fellow players, but taking that next step to be a leader has been an entirely new experience - one he's needed his new teammates for. The 49ers added Wake Forest transfer Chase Monroe and freshman Reid Williford to join the returning group of Boykins, Burden, Prince Bemah and B.J. Turner, who combined for less than 400 total defensive snaps last season. "It's been hard. Personally, I'm not a vocal dude, so I've had to step out of my comfort box and elaborate on some stuff," Boykins said about the new leadership role. "Having Chase (Monroe) in the room has helped me a lot because he's a pro. But I think I'm finally stepping up to be who I need to be." - Charlotte Observer

One of the largest recruits ever to be recruited by Nick Saban is still pretty large, but not quite as large as he was. Freshman defensive lineman Jaheim Oatis has lost 74 pounds in advance of his first season in Tuscaloosa, tweeting days before fall camp started that he weighed 342 pounds after previously tipping the scales at 416. The Columbia, Mississippi native had been listed at 370 pounds by Alabama, or 27 pounds heavier than the next-heaviest player in defensive lineman Tim Keenan at 343 pounds. And at 6-foot-5, Oatis is tied with a couple of others as the tallest among his position group.

"A lot of big guys, they would complain about being that big and having to lose that type of weight," outside linebacker Will Anderson said Monday. "But he came here, head down, worked hard, lost the weight." There might have been a time in the past when a defensive lineman weighing 370 pounds -- or even 400 -- had a place in college football as an immovable run-stuffer. But the proliferation of spread-passing attacks has shifted the role of defensive lineman from clogging the line of scrimmage to more often providing disruption to the pocket as pass rushers. And despite his still-impressive size, Oatis could provide some of that for Alabama. "Believe it or not, I think Jaheim has got a lot more wiggle than you guys think he's got," defensive coordinator Pete Golding said Sunday. "So he's a guy internally [on the offensive line] that if you leave one guy on him, good luck." - Birmingham News

Less than a week into preseason practice, Kentucky football's defensive secondary has lost another possible contributor. Junior Joel Williams, who ended spring practice as one of the top candidates to replace injured Vito Tisdale at nickel back, will transfer out of the program, a UK spokeswoman confirmed Monday. Williams appeared in seven games last season mostly on special teams. He totaled two tackles. A former four-star recruit in the class of 2020, the Baton Rouge, Louisiana, native enrolled early at Kentucky then played in nine of 10 games as a freshman.

He was one of six players who missed time early last season during an investigation into a fight involving football players and members of a UK fraternity at an off-campus party, but burglary charges against Williams and his teammates were later dropped, clearing them to return to the team. When Tisdale suffered what is expected to be a season-ending knee injury in spring practice, Williams was one of the first players mentioned by Coach Mark Stoops as a candidate to take on a larger role. "He's doing a really good job at that position," Stoops said. "When you're asking me about the versatility, we don't have somebody who can do (what Tisdale did) but as far as playing that spot, Joel has done a nice job with the nickel, medium position. So yes, we're going to count on him a lot, and we've got to bring some others along." - Herald Leader

Eric Kiesau noticed a change in Tar'Varish Dawson Jr.'s demeanor about midway through last season. Kiesau, now entering his first season as Auburn's offensive coordinator, said Dawson "might be the most improved young player on offense" this offseason. He put together a strong spring, which he capped with three receptions for 28 yards and a 7-yard carry during the A-Day spring game while leading the Tigers in targets and receptions. During SEC Media Days last month, Harsin described Dawson as a "completely different player" than he was a year ago and identified him as someone who has the kind of big-play potential that Auburn desperately needs at the wide receiver position. "He has good hands, and he can track the ball," Kiesau said. "Like I said, I'm excited. And we have to be creative with how we use him. Really. We do. But we'll find ways."

The Tigers are replacing two of their top-three receivers from last season, with Kobe Hudson now at UCF and Demetris Robertson's eligibility exhausted. Outside of fifth-year senior Shedrick Jackson, who was the team's second-leading receiver in 2021, Auburn doesn't have much experience or proven playmakers at the position heading into the season. That's where Dawson will have his opportunity, along with a slew of other returners and newcomers in the room. Expectations appear to be mounting for Dawson, though, especially after some of the potential he flashed when he first arrived on campus last year. Dawson, rated as the nation's No. 22 athlete coming out of high school, made a fast impression a year ago during fall camp with his speed and big-play ability. - Birmingham News

After losing its starting quarterback and virtually all pass catchers from the 2021 season, there is a lot of uncertainty as to what Western Michigan's offense will look like under first-year coordinator Jeff Thorne. And with that uncertainty comes skepticism about how the Broncos will fare in head coach Tim Lester's sixth season at the helm. Jack Salopek, last year's backup quarterback, exited spring ball with a slight edge over dual-threat signal caller Mareyohn Hrabowski and Alabama transfer Stone Hollenbach, and the redshirt freshman out of Pennsylvania took nearly all of the first-team reps on Thursday, continuing his trajectory for the starting job in Week 1.

"He had a great spring, great summer, and I've told everybody, the race just began today, but he's in the poll position," Lester said. "He got the most reps with the 1s. The back-shoulder one he threw down the sideline was impressive. I thought he made good decisions, but we have to watch the film." WMU football. Salopek, 6-1, 185, showed enough zip to deliver a strike across the field on an out route, good placement on a seam route to tight end Austin Hence and good touch on a back-shoulder fade to Wisconsin transfer A.J. Abbott, who made a sliding catch between defenders against a WMU zone. - Kalamazoo Gazette
