  08/06/22 - Johnny LanganrSr/2024, Rutgers, 6-3, 232 (DS#5 FB) + More +

Bo Melton and Isaih Pacheco, who led Rutgers in receiving and rushing, respectively, for each of the past three seasons, were both selected in the seventh round of the NFL Draft this April. Can the Scarlet Knights replace their production? There are some strong candidates on the outside. Taj Harris was one of the best receivers in the ACC at Syracuse, while Sean Ryan flashed his potential at West Virginia. Aron Cruickshank, who is on pace to recover from his torn ACL in time to participate in the season opener, and Joshua Youngblood are two of the most dynamic athletes in the Big Ten. Shameen Jones, who finished second behind Melton in receiving yards in the last two seasons, has a chance to break through. And if no receivers can fill the void, there is always do-it-all offensive weapon Johnny Langan. - Star Ledger

  08/05/22 - Jahzion HarrisJr/2025, Rutgers, 6-4, 205 (DS#999 OLB) + More +

Rutgers just added a playmaker off the edge to a up-and-coming group of talented defensive linemen in Piscataway when former four-star Texas A&M edge Jahzion Harris, originally from Erasmus Hall in Brooklyn, N.Y., announced that he will transfer to Rutgers joining five other ex-E-Hall players on the banks. And here's what the highly-rated four-star, who is eligible to play this fall, will add to Rutgers' defense. Harris is 6-foot-5 with a large wingspan, and he's really agile, explosive and pops off the film like Moses Walker, who also played at E-Hall and now plays at Rutgers, did. Harris can dip his shoulder and turn the corner quickly and subtly, showcasing bend.

He also has a quick hesitation move that he uses to free himself up, along with a swipe and wrong shoulder, dip-and-rip move. Plus, he's versatile and can stack-and-shed and use his length to keep the hands of linemen off his frame, flashing the fight it takes to win battles inside. He sometimes plays tall and must and add bulk, but has really good balance and a calmness to his game, yet good reactionary quickness and he can change direction and run. Watching Harris at a high school prospect camp years back (I think it may have been Nike camp), I remember his lightning quick first-step, and long, sleek athletic frame. He reminds me some class of 2021 Timber Creek-turned-IMG edge Jihaad Campbell, who now plays at Alabama, and is league-bound. - Star Ledger

  08/03/22 - Aron CruickshankrSr/2023, Rutgers, 5-09, 165 (DS#120 WR) + More +

2022 PRESEASON PAUL HORNUNG AWARD WATCH LIST: Aron Cruickshank, Rutgers,...Cruickshank enters 2022 with 3,129 career all-purpose yards (2,194 kickoff return, 523 receiving yards, 245 rushing yards, 167 punt return yards) in 43 games. He was also on the Paul Hornung Award watch list last season. Cruickshank recorded 153 yards on eight punt returns in 2021, including a 62-yard touchdown versus Delaware. The performance helped earn Big Ten Co-Special Teams Player of the Week.

Cruickshank added 55 yards on two punt returns versus Temple. He ripped off a season-best 57-yard kickoff return against the Owls as well. Overall, the New York native finished second on the Scarlet Knights with 743 all-purpose yards (316 kickoff return, 244 receiving, 153 punt return, 30 rushing) in seven games played. That included receiving touchdowns versus Ohio State and Michigan State. Cruickshank owns five career kick return touchdowns (four kickoff, one punt) and was named the Big Ten Rodgers-Dwight Return Specialist of the Year and honorable mention All-America (Phil Steele) in 2020. - Rutgers Football

  08/03/22 - Jahzion HarrisJr/2025, Rutgers, 6-4, 205 (DS#999 OLB) + More +

Rutgers is bringing in a big-time transfer with a familiar background. The Scarlet Knights have landed Texas A&M defensive line transfer Jahzion Harris, a person with knowledge of the situation told NJ Advance Media. A four-star recruit in the class of 2021, the 6-foot-4, 220-pound edge rusher has four years of eligibility remaining after redshirting his freshman season in College Station last fall. Despite a late entrance into the transfer portal - he went in on Thursday, July 28, which is nearly three months after the May 1 deadline for players to transfer and be eligible for the following season - Harris is expected to be immediately eligible for the 2022 season, the person said. Harris will supplement one of the strongest units on Rutgers' roster and will help fill the void left when top edge rusher Mohamed Toure suffered a season-ending knee injury in the spring. - Star Ledger

  08/03/22 - Aaron LewisrSr/2025, Rutgers, 6-4, 255 (DS#87 DE) + More +

A Rutgers pass rush that was far from ferocious last season - it ranked 11th in the Big Ten and 94th nationally in sacks (23/1.8 per game) and 92nd nationally and ninth in the Big Ten in tackles for loss (64/4.9 per game) - faces an uphill battle for improvement. Due to a combination of injury (Mohamed Toure) and graduation (Olakunle Fatukasi and Julius Turner), the Scarlet Knights will be without their three leading sackers from that unit who accounted for nearly half (9.5 sacks; 41.3%) of that production. Rutgers have some intriguing players who can replace that production. Lewis, who was tied with Turner for third on the team with 2.5 sacks last season, is near the top of that list.

The former four-star recruit out of Williamstown, who transferred to the Scarlet Knights months after enrolling at Michigan, flashed his immense potential throughout his first two years in Piscataway. With veterans Mayan Ahanatu and Ifeanyi Maijeh and budding star Kyonte Hamilton stuffing the interior of the line, Lewis will have an opportunity for a breakout season. "I think Aaron Lewis is going to have a tremendous year," head coach Greg Schiano said at Big Ten Media Days. "He's practiced and played at a different level. I think he and (defensive line coach) Marquise Watson have a tremendous relationship and Marquise has really accelerated his growth. I'm excited. He's matured. You see him growing up right in front of your eyes. He's really talented but I think he's stepped it up." - Star Ledger

Greg Schiano said wide receiver/returner Aron Cruickshank is looking "like his old self" after recovering from surgery to repair a knee injury in the Scarlet Knights' game against Wisconsin last season. "I'm very optimistic," Schiano said. "He's one of our most explosive players." Cruickshank still will be eased into training camp, Schiano said. Regardless, Cruickshank's return would be huge for Rutgers' offense and special teams. - Asbury Park Press

Avery Young, the 6-0, 195-pound safety from Coatesville, Pennsylvania has played in - and started nearly every game - since his arrival. That's more than 3,000 snaps by Schiano's estimation and 42 career starts since 2018. With one year of eligibility remaining, Young returns after making 81 tackles last season, good for the second most on the team. He enters the season as a Third Team All-Big Ten selection and one of the veteran leaders in a secondary that should be one of the strengths of first-year coordinator Joe Harasymiak's defense. - Star Ledger

  08/01/22 - Adam KorsakrSr/2023, Rutgers, 6-1, 187 (DS#3 P) + More +

No disrespect to Iowa's Tory Taylor, but Rutgers' Adam Korsak goes into the season as the Big Ten's most popular and decorated punter. Hawkeye fans may remember Korsak's remarkable punting exhibition in a 30-0 Iowa win over Rutgers at Kinnick Stadium in 2019 - a clinic of downed balls inside the 5-yard line and a 47.6-yard average on 10 punts. This past season, Korsak's remarkable leg led to Rutgers setting an NCAA record for net punting average, at 45.34 yards per attempt. He has gone an amazing 129 straight punts without a touchback. Like Taylor, Korsak grew up in Australia kicking balls to friends because that's how you pass and score in Australian rules football - by kicking. That's where the amazing control on punts comes from. "So how you might have grown up throwing a baseball or football, we grow up punting the ball 20 yards back and forth with our friends or our dad or whoever," Korsak said. "So it's built into us, it's very natural." Korsak and Taylor are good friends. They met at Prokick, an Australian academy that trains American punters.

Taylor sent a question through a reporter to ask Korsak who has the second-best hair among Big Ten punters. "So Jesse Mirco (of Ohio State) is first and Tory's third then," Korsak said with an Aussie accent and a winning smile. "What I would say, Tory. I wake up and this is my hair. I hide the grays, but I don't go out and get a perm. You can tell him that." Jokes aside, Korsak and Taylor respect each other greatly and will see each other this year when Iowa travels to Rutgers on Sept. 24. Taylor is no slouch himself, of course - first-team all-Big Ten punter in 2020 and averaged 46.1 yards per punt last season. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

  07/30/22 - Reggie SuttonrSr/2025, Rutgers, 6-3, 308 (DS#999 OG) + More +

Rutgers may be without its top offensive lineman for longer than expected. After suffering a devastating knee injury in practice last fall, senior Reggie Sutton will be a "long shot" to play in 2022, coach Greg Schiano said Wednesday during the Big Ten's media event at Lucas Oil Stadium. "I can't predict the future, but he's going to be a long shot for this year," Schiano said. "Hopefully he can come back for 2023." The injury occurred Sept. 22, three days before the Scarlet Knights played at eventual Big Ten champion Michigan. The Maryland native, who has one year of eligibility remaining, had started 12 straight games at the time and settled in at right guard as Rutgers' top performer in the trenches. Schiano called it a "terrible" knee injury, adding he "tore every three-letter ligament". - Star Ledger

  07/29/22 - Drew SingletonrSr/2022, Rutgers, 6-1, 232 (DS#69 OLB) + More +

Rutgers is seeking a huge boost in a beat-up position group in what could be a test case for the future of college football. Linebacker Drew Singleton, who planned to forgo his final year of eligibility to pursue a professional career this offseason, is pursuing a waiver to return to Piscataway for the 2022 season, Scarlet Knights head coach Greg Schiano said Wednesday at Big Ten Media Days. The former Paramus Catholic star's initial application for reinstatement was denied by the NCAA, which was expected, Schiano said. Singleton and Rutgers are appealing the decision. There is no definitive timeline on when they'll hear back. "What was the grand total of what he took? He took training expenses from an agent. And you're not going to let this guy (come back)?" Schiano said. "Here's a guy that wants to come back, provide for his family, he wants to get his master's. He has an opportunity to do that. He's an inner-city Newark kid. And we're going to deny him that right? I hope not. I hope that cooler minds prevail and he's granted this year. He paid the money back immediately. When he decided he was going to come back, he paid the money back." Singleton planned to forgo his final year of eligibility following the 2021 season.

After Rutgers' regular season ended with a 5-7 record and no bowl bid, he began the process of preparing for the NFL Draft, signing with an agent. Then the Scarlet Knights received a last-second bid to the Gator Bowl. While other NFL prospects like Bo Melton and Isaih Pacheco understandably decided to forgo the game to avoid risking injury, Singleton elected to play in the game with just eight days notice. He went on to hurt his ankle in the game, significantly impacting his draft prep, which he "began in a (walking) boot." - Star Ledger

  07/29/22 - Noah VedralrSr/2024, Rutgers, 6-1, 200 (DS#999 QB) + More +

With training camp starting next week, Rutgers coach Greg Schiano said he's treating this year's quarterback competition like a job interview. All three candidates - Noah Vedral, Gavin Wimsatt and Evan Simon - could land the job when the Scarlet Knights open the season Sept. 3 at Boston College, Schiano said Wednesday at the Big Ten's media day event. "The one thing I've learned about quarterback competitions is you have to let it happen," Schiano said. "It's the same thing as interviewing. Early in my career, I made the mistake of hiring people sometimes because I predetermined this was the best guy. (In that case), don't interview all the rest of them because you're wasting everybody's time. We're going through the process."

Schiano did not rule out the possibility of playing multiple quarterbacks like Rutgers deployed last year in the Gator Bowl. "I understand if you have a guy is clearly above the rest of them, you roll it," Schiano said. "But more than one guy can play, absolutely." Last season, Vedral started all 13 games and passed for 1,823 yards and threw seven touchdowns and seven interceptions. The Wahoo, Nebraska returns for a sixth year of eligibility and has appeared in 35 games at three schools - Rutgers, Nebraska and Central Florida. At times, the Rutgers offense struggled under Vedral's direction, and the Scarlet Knights ended up ranked in the bottom two of the Big Ten in scoring and passing yards per game. - Star Ledger

  07/29/22 - Johnny LanganrSr/2024, Rutgers, 6-3, 232 (DS#5 FB) + More +

What's next for Johnny Langan? The Bergen Catholic product has had a wild ride since joining the Scarlet Knights after transferring to Boston College. From the starting quarterback in 2019 to now a full-time tight end, Langan has continuously flashed his versatility within the offense. Langan is a good pass catcher, a solid blocker and physical runner. He's developed into a consistent, reliable and formidable all-around tight end. He showed a lot of that growth last season, capped off by an impressive performance in the Gator Bowl that earned him team MVP honors. Now it'll be interesting to see what "Johnny Offense" can bring in 2022. One thing is clear: He's become a real weapon for Rutgers and a go-to option for whoever's at quarterback. - Asbury Park Press

  07/28/22 - Adam KorsakrSr/2023, Rutgers, 6-1, 187 (DS#3 P) + More +

2022 PRESEASON RAY GUY WATCHLIST: Adam Korsak - Rutgers,...Named Second Team All-America in 2021 by the Associated Press, FWAA, Phil Steele and Walter Camp, Korsak helped the Scarlet Knights to a net punting average of 45.25 yards to set a new NCAA record. He became the first Scarlet Knight to place in the top-three for a national on-field award since 2007. Opponents had a return of less than four yards 69-of-72 attempts, with 65 times recording a zero or negative return.

In addition, Korsak pinned 38 inside the 20 with 16 settling at the 10 or closer and four times stopping a punt at the 1-yard line. He boomed 19 at least 50 yards on the way to setting a new program record with a 45.8 average, recording zero touchbacks. The two-time team captain has posted 124 consecutive attempts without a touchback dating back to 2019 and was voted First Team All-Big Ten in the coaches' vote. Korsak additionally holds the Rutgers records for career punting yards (12,021), career punts (274) and longest punt (79 yards). - Rutgers Football
