  07/18/22 - Brandon SandersrSr/2023, Rutgers, 5-11, 205 (DS#999 WR) + More +

The Rutgers wide receiver room has lost a contributor. Senior wideout Brandon Sanders, who spent the 2021 season with the Scarlet Knights and had another year of eligibility available, announced his medical retirement from football Thursday on Instagram. "After many talks with God, my family and support staff, I have decided to medically retire from the game of football," Sanders wrote. "I am forever grateful for everyone who has guided me, taught me and believed in me along my journey these last 17 years." Sanders featured in 10 games -- including three starts -- for Rutgers during the 2021 season.

He was the Scarlet Knights' fourth-leading receiver, catching 16 passes for 183 yards and a touchdown. His best performance came against Delaware, when he caught three passes for 84 yards, including a 62-yard touchdown reception. Sanders spent his first three seasons of college football at Bucknell, hauling in 23 receptions for 264 yards and two touchdowns as a junior during the 2021 spring season, earning All-Patriot League honors for a second straight campaign. Sanders was a force at the FCS level, tallying 125 receptions for 1,310 yards and five touchdowns in 23 games over three seasons. - Star Ledger

  07/01/22 - Noah VedralrSr/2024, Rutgers, 6-1, 200 (DS#999 QB) + More +

"The game is played on 120 yards of grass, and it takes one step (to change a play), which is one of the coolest parts of football," Noah Vedral says, explaining his thinking while reading a defensive end before snapping the ball on a crucial third-down play against Illinois. "There are so many parts of football, and that's one. Look at the space on the screen and we're talking about which foot he's taking his first step with." Whenever he hangs his cleats up for good, Vedral aspires to be a coach leading film sessions just like this, only to a group of actual football players instead. His immediate goal is to coach quarterbacks "at the college level or higher," with the aspirations of eventually becoming a college offensive coordinator and one day running his own program as a head coach.

That journey has no definitive start time. Vedral would "love" to play professionally, which would delay his coaching career, but he will not "chase that to exhaustion" if he does not believe professional football is within the realm of possibility. Whether he receives any opportunities will come down to how the two-year starter does in his final season of college football this fall, a process that begins in August with a training camp battle against hotshot freshman quarterback Gavin Wimsatt, the highest-ranked QB recruit in program history. Less cloudy is how Vedral came to the conclusion he wants to be a coach. It is a natural fit for the member of a football family that includes a legendary high school coach in his native Wahoo, Nebraska, and numerous former players for their home state Huskers, but it was not exactly preordained. While he always planned on being around football after he was done playing, Vedral said he did not know in what capacity until recently. - Star Ledger

  05/26/22 - Adam KorsakrSr/2023, Rutgers, 6-1, 187 (DS#3 P) + More +

Following the successful recruitment of All-American punter Adam Korsak, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights will once again lean on the international pipeline to bolster its special teams units. Latest additions to the Rutgers roster include a place kicker from Derry, Ireland, and another Australian punter, who arrives from the same program as Korsak. Korsak returns for his final season after a record-setting season last fall to mentor Flynn Appleby, a standout from the Australian Football League. Jude McAtamney arrives at Rutgers with two years of eligibility remaining after transferring from Chowan University, a Division 2 program in North Carolina. McAtamney told The Irish News he chasing the American Dream - the one that requires shoulder pads and helmets. - Star Ledger

  05/06/22 - Taj HarrisrSr/2024, Rutgers, 6-1, 180 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Rutgers has to replace Bo Melton, now a Seattle Seahawk, but this position group is arguably deeper than it has been in a while. Syracuse transfer Taj Harris made a big impression in the spring game, finishing with five catches for 49 yards and a touchdown. The Palmyra product made some tough plays and clearly showed that he could be poised to be Rutgers' top receiver. He's a dynamic weapon. Sean Ryan also played well with four catches for 48 yards. Add in Aron Cruickshank, who's recovering from an injury, Shameen Jones, Isaiah Washington, Brandon Sanders and young players like Rashad Rochelle and Max Patterson, and this could be a formidable group with speed and athleticism. - Asbury Park Press

The third-year defensive back was one of the best players on the field. Melton finished with five tackles and one pass break-up. The 6-foot, 190-pound Melton made several nice plays and delivered some hard hits. Melton last season finished with 28 tackles (two for loss) with a team-leading three interceptions in 10 games.   04/26/22 - Taj HarrisrSr/2024, Rutgers, 6-1, 180 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Taj Harris made a strong first impression on the Rutgers fanbase. He caught the opening touchdown of the spring game, an impressive back-shoulder grab on a pass from Noah Vedral. Harris finished with five catches for 49 yards. On the other team, Sean Ryan had the distinction of catching Wimsatt's first pass at a spring game, gaining 26 yards. Ryan finished with four catches for 48 yards. Sixth-year senior Shameen Jones (67 yards on three catches) had a nice day as well. With leading receiver Bo Melton off to the NFL, the trio are in the running to be the Scarlet Knights' top receiver, and each showed flashes of that capability. - Star Ledger

  04/21/22 - Kessawn AbrahamrSr/2024, Rutgers, 5-10, 189 (DS#82 SS) + More +

Kessawn Abraham had a breakout season in 2021. Now the Rutgers cornerback needs to build on it. Abraham was one of the Scarlet Knights' most consistent and dependable players last season, finishing with 44 tackles (three for loss) with nine pass breakups on the way to being named the team's defensive MVP at its season-ending banquet. The Erasmus Hall product made steady improvement in his fourth year in the program. Abraham also made one of the biggest plays of the season in Rutgers' win over Illinois, taking down Illini running back Chase Brown for a four-yard loss on fourth-and-1 with less than two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. That forced a turnover on downs and sealed the Scarlet Knights' 20-14 victory. "I would like to see him really just keep going and continuing on the course that he was," coach Greg Schiano said. "There is going to be increased competition at his position so that is going to challenge him. And Kess is a really good football player. He is a good corner, but he is a good football player. He has a good sense of what's going on. He just needs to continue to improve." - Asbury Park Press

  11/13/21 - Isaih PachecoSr/2022, Rutgers, 5-10, 222 (DS#35 RB) + More +

Rutgers coach Greg Schiano started Saturday without his top three linebackers. Six turnovers and a a nifty trick play later, the Scarlet Knights celebrated a possible program-changing victory. Isaih Pacheco scored twice in the first quarter and Rutgers scored 17 points off turnovers, routing Indiana 38-3 to move within one win of becoming bowl eligible for the first time since 2014. "I'm excited, our guys are fighting," Schiano said. "We want to write that story at the end of the year and now we have a chance. We'll see what we can do." For the Scarlet Knights (5-5, 2-5 Big Ten), this wasn't just another win.

It was their most lopsided victory in conference play since joining the Big Ten - easily surpassing the previous mark of 22 points against Indiana in 2015. Now comes the hard part - beating either No. 23 Penn State or Maryland to finish the job. Rutgers earned some style points, too, when quarterback Noah Vedral threw a backward pass to offensive tackle Raiqwon O'Neal, who caught the ball around the 12-yard line and dove toward the pylon for a 7-yard TD run and a 31-3 lead in the third quarter. - Rutgers/AP College Football
