  07/29/22 - QB Noah VedralrSr/2024, Rutgers

With training camp starting next week, Rutgers coach Greg Schiano said he's treating this year's quarterback competition like a job interview. All three candidates - Noah Vedral, Gavin Wimsatt and Evan Simon - could land the job when the Scarlet Knights open the season Sept. 3 at Boston College, Schiano said Wednesday at the Big Ten's media day event. "The one thing I've learned about quarterback competitions is you have to let it happen," Schiano said. "It's the same thing as interviewing. Early in my career, I made the mistake of hiring people sometimes because I predetermined this was the best guy. (In that case), don't interview all the rest of them because you're wasting everybody's time. We're going through the process."

Schiano did not rule out the possibility of playing multiple quarterbacks like Rutgers deployed last year in the Gator Bowl. "I understand if you have a guy is clearly above the rest of them, you roll it," Schiano said. "But more than one guy can play, absolutely." Last season, Vedral started all 13 games and passed for 1,823 yards and threw seven touchdowns and seven interceptions. The Wahoo, Nebraska returns for a sixth year of eligibility and has appeared in 35 games at three schools - Rutgers, Nebraska and Central Florida. At times, the Rutgers offense struggled under Vedral's direction, and the Scarlet Knights ended up ranked in the bottom two of the Big Ten in scoring and passing yards per game. - Star Ledger
