 Johnny Langan, Rutgers, Player News

Tight end Johnny Langan threw and caught a touchdown pass as Rutgers rolled to a 66-7 rout of Wagner on Saturday. Highly-touted recruit Gavin Wimsatt made his first career start at quarterback, but Rutgers coach Greg Schiano continued to jockey the position between the redshirt freshman and third-year sophomore Evan Simon. Veteran signal caller Noah Vedral remained out with an upper-body injury. "They both did some really good things. I think there's some things that we've really got to get better, fast, because time is our enemy right now," Schiano said. "Now we have two tapes to teach from, two game tapes, and we'll do a lot of things with cut ups and putting those games together and showing them." After Wagner opened the game with a 31-yard pass play, Rutgers' defense tightened and stopped the Seahawks on fourth-and-4. Rutgers proceeded to go down the field on an 11-play, 62-yard drive spanning 4:27, capped by a Kyle Monangai 2-yard touchdown run to take an early lead. Simon later threw a 40-yard touchdown pass, Wimsatt added a 41-yarder and Langan, a former quarterback, connected with Isaiah Washington on a 43-yard touchdown pass as the Scarlet Knights (2-0) scored on their first four possessions. - Rutgers/AP College Football

Bo Melton and Isaih Pacheco, who led Rutgers in receiving and rushing, respectively, for each of the past three seasons, were both selected in the seventh round of the NFL Draft this April. Can the Scarlet Knights replace their production? There are some strong candidates on the outside. Taj Harris was one of the best receivers in the ACC at Syracuse, while Sean Ryan flashed his potential at West Virginia. Aron Cruickshank, who is on pace to recover from his torn ACL in time to participate in the season opener, and Joshua Youngblood are two of the most dynamic athletes in the Big Ten. Shameen Jones, who finished second behind Melton in receiving yards in the last two seasons, has a chance to break through. And if no receivers can fill the void, there is always do-it-all offensive weapon Johnny Langan. - Star Ledger

What's next for Johnny Langan? The Bergen Catholic product has had a wild ride since joining the Scarlet Knights after transferring to Boston College. From the starting quarterback in 2019 to now a full-time tight end, Langan has continuously flashed his versatility within the offense. Langan is a good pass catcher, a solid blocker and physical runner. He's developed into a consistent, reliable and formidable all-around tight end. He showed a lot of that growth last season, capped off by an impressive performance in the Gator Bowl that earned him team MVP honors. Now it'll be interesting to see what "Johnny Offense" can bring in 2022. One thing is clear: He's become a real weapon for Rutgers and a go-to option for whoever's at quarterback. - Asbury Park Press

Johnny Langan is still listed as a quarterback on the training-camp roster distributed by Rutgers officials Wednesday. But the junior out of Bergen Catholic could've been listed the way some recruits are pegged when they arrive without a clearly defined position: as an athlete. "He's a quarterback but he's also a multi-positional player," Schiano said. "So he can line up at wideout, he can line up at tight end, he can line up at running back. In different packages he'll line up in different spots. That's a good weapon to have."

Take the opening day of Rutgers' camp for example: Langan took repetitions with the tight ends and, unlike the five other quarterbacks on the roster, he didn't wear a green (non-contact) jersey. "He's 'Johnny Offense," Scarlet Knights quarterback Noah Vedral said. "He's a really big tool for us so we want to use him. His role is as diverse as ever." After starting the final eight games at quarterback for Rutgers in 2019, Langan emerged as a jack-of-all-trades performer last season in offensive coordinator Sean Gleeson's scheme. In addition to throwing for 92 yards and two touchdowns on 10-for-13 passing, Langan rushed for a team-high four touchdowns and his 201 rushing yards were second-best on the team. And he tallied 10 receiving yards on two receptions. - Star Ledger

After what interim coach Nunzio Campanile referred to as another training camp these last four weeks while he installed a new offense following the ouster of coach Chris Ash, Rutgers' offense was finally clicking. Rutgers quarterback Johnny Langan had a career day, completing 15 of 21 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns, and adding 21 rushes for 118 yards and a touchdown to lead Rutgers past Liberty 44-34 on Saturday. "It is what I imagined - I thought it would come a little quicker than that." Campanile said of his offense with a wry smile. "In all honesty I think I learned pretty quickly there are some matchups and stuff that weren't exactly easy for us, and some of the stuff we dealt with the first week probably set us back a little. This is what I would envision us being, and hopefully it is something that we can build off."

Isaih Pacheco ran for 107 yards and a score for the Scarlet Knights (2-6). It was the fourth time in his career he topped 100 yards. Langan had a 51-yard pitch-and-catch to Isaiah Washington for Washington's first career touchdown and Rutgers' first lead of the game at 28-21 with 12 minutes left in the third quarter. It was also Rutgers' first lead since they were leading Boston College 10-7 in an eventual 30-16 loss five games ago. On the ensuing possession, a false start by right tackle Sam Isaacson on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line forced Liberty to kick the field goal to make it 28-24 with 6:53 left in the third quarter. However, with Rutgers' offense humming for the first time since the season-opening win against UMass, Liberty's defense was unable to make the stops needed. - Rutgers/AP College Football

Johnny Langan is out - for now. The Rutgers transfer quarterback has been ruled ineligible to play this season by the NCAA, head coach Chris Ash said Wednesday as the Scarlet Knights reported to training camp. But Langan is currently appealing the decision, Ash said. There is no timeframe on when a decision on the appeal may be made. Langan is a former Bergen Catholic star who transferred in this past winter after redshirting at Boston College. He was projected to be the No. 3 quarterback on the Scarlet Knights' depth chart behind incumbent starter Artur Sitkowski and graduate transfer addition McLane Carter. If Langan's appeal is denied, true freshman Cole Snyder will likely be the third quarterback. - Star Ledger
